I’m Really Not a Fan of the Yellow Pearl. Just traded my 2018 for 2021 Crosstrek Outdoor. I really liked my 2018 but the 2021 with the 2.5 liter just make the Trek Perfect.

Two months ago I traded in my 2016 Special edition Crosstrek for this new Crosstrek. Absolutely love this car. Two days ago I was hit by another car while driving through an intersection. My car then hit a wall and flipped over, honestly the smoothest/softest crash I've ever been in. Not a scratch on me... Nothing. After I was helped out of my car by rescue i stood up, looked at my car and couldn't believe how bad it looked considering how easy the crash on me was being inside. Yesterday (day after the accident) I was at the dealership ordering another one. My new, new Crosstrek will be my 8th Subaru, it's all I'll drive.

I like the fact that the aftermarket support for the Crosstrek is getting better. I can get skids, rockers, winchmounts, hitches, a rear diff-locker, AT/MT tires, roof boxes, hitch racks, a turbo kit, intake spacers, exhausts, high-flow airfilters, LED fogs, etc.

It really is a great vehicle for many drivers especially commuters. Small to drive yet good cargo, good handling, great fuel economy for a CUV, best AWD on the market for poor driving conditions, enough ground clearance to feel like you're sitting high and enough to prevent damage on curbs, pot holes, road debris, etc. Pair all of that with a starting price in the low 20's and it's a great package.

I bought the 2013 XV a few months after they first arrived in Canada. Wife still loves it in 2021 and doesn't want to trade it for a newer model.
Off road abilities are real but it's no Jeep Wrangler. The main source of great off roading comes down to tires too. Without proper grip from them, the wheels will likely spin a bit more. All Terrain tires for off roading are mandatory in real mud and help in winter driving a lot more than winter tires do.
The pieces inside are cheap to look at but they last and don't break. This car has utility and lasts. You want fancy, look elsewhere. You want reliability, look here.
I drive a 2017 Durango GT with All Terrain tires and live in Ontario Canada (where this video is filmed). My truck is AWD which is different than the Symmetrical AWD. While both can handle this terrain, the XV feels more nimble and more like the Imprezza ralley car it dreams (but misses) to be.

I think the choice of a old-school halogen headlight housing was really smart from a functionality standpoint. What most people don't realize about LED headlight housings is that the whole thing is custom made to house the LED system. There are custom lights, heat pipes and fan systems, and that cooling is designed to _try_ and get as much life out of the LEDs as possible, but eventually they will die. When they do, you can't just replace the bulb - you have to replace the whole housing, and costs for them are insane. With an old-school halogen housing, you can just replace the bulb (and you _can_ get LEDs for them). If someone were doing more back-country things with this car at night, that makes dealing with burnt out bulb something that takes a minute or two and for very little cost. Subaru was clearly thinking about function over form.

Honestly for 29k USD the sport(outdoor canada) is a really good well rounded model. Gets great mpg for awd gasoline car, superior space and features, its litterally one of the cheapest small crossovers to insure. I have tested almost every crossover and these are super cheap to insure. They are very easy to work on because of the clearance. Has pretty much the best ride for the price. It is a little noisy but that is because of all the window which i wont complain about because then you can see all the bad drivers easier. The fb25 engine is pretty much the perfect size for this car. Enough power to get you going without sacrificing economy(the 2.0 is trash) i will say this though. It needs a proper plug in version that gets 38+mpg. Its sad the 2021 sienna can get 36mpg but a much smaller crosstrek isnt even coming close.

    • @RKmndo
      @RKmndo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I can average 40+MPG with a 2016 2.slo/CVT Crosstrek on my 50mile commute, with a best tank of 46+MPG. I have a high-flow cotton airfilter, and I set the cruise near the 55-65MPH speed limit. Even after swapping the stock 225/55R17 Geolandar A/Ss to 225/60R17 AT Trails, I can average 40+MPG at 55MPG.

I have taken it on some winter storm road trips and drove it through 1 foot fresh snow { in the middle of no where being a naive off roader} and didnt get stuck. also the car is so extremely fun to drive. turning radius is tiny, traction is geat, acceleration of the bigger engine is nice. I planning on getting a truck cuz im tall and want to carry a lot of stuff and sleep in it but wow the crosstrek is so fun and capable like a rally racer it almost makes me want to hange my mind. and its a hell of a lot cheaper lol

i own a 2013 and love it, appart for a little lack of power. So i was glad when they added the 2.5, it should give it just the little edge it was missing (i am not looking for a race car).
BIG PROBLEM though, please put a 6 speed MT in it!!!! It is a deal breaker for me because i HATE CVTs. if i have to go for an automatic wich seems more and more like my destiny if i want to keep driving any 4wd, i think i will go for a RAV4 instead.
But i would miss the off road capacity and the absolute fun of offroading with a good old stick shift.

Until I can get affordable replacements from the shelf at any autoparts store, I'd prefer to stick with incandescent OEM headlights and incandescent-compatible OEM taillights. I don't have any trouble seeing with halogen headlights. Unlit roads are what highbeams and/or auxiliary driving lights are for. Auxiliary fogs are for inclement weather. Use LEDs in those auxiliary lights if you need an LED fix.
Change your wiper blades regularly, and top up your washer fluid. Set the brightness on your GPS to night mode, and turn your dash lights down a bit. Eat your veggies too.
The popular obsession these days with LED headlights for cars is silly, IMO. I can understand wanting low-wattage LED lights on something like a dualsport moto with low stator output, but car alternators put out plenty of juice to power halogens. Halogens also generally melt snow/ice better.

I have a legacy 3.6 with 107k miles and a outback 2.5 61k miles. Both leak oil already. The legacy from the timing chain and the outback(has the same engine as this crosstrek) has a leak on the passenger side cam carrier. Btw these are both a couple thousand dollar repairs. They dont leak much but it is still annoying to have to keep checking the oil litterally every week. My 16 year old toyota doesnt lose a drop in 5k miles yet my 60k mile outback i have to put in a quart every 4k miles. A little bull imo. I wont by a subaru again. Especially with the constant interior tech issues as well. Like auto window switches keep messing up, the headlights get moisture in them which shorts out bulbs incredibly fast and the infotainments glitch where they go black every once in awhile. I have heard the crosstrek is the most reliable subaru cause its made in Japan but still. Subarus have kind of been a little annoying. I love the legacy but it had 12 recalls.... and the outback is falling apart right after the warranty. Btw i am religious about the maintenance and they still are having issues.

@@Hallowsaw Thanks Shawn, most of these reviews of new SHINY vehicles fails to tell people what they need to know, how good is the car past 3 years!!. Most people seem to lease every three years which and thus they never really see quality or reliability issues. Thanks for your input!! Would rather have halogens. They produce heat which will alleviate any glazing issues of the headlights that can occur during sleet/freezing rain conditions.
    LEDs do not.
Also for those who want to keep the vehicle long term it is much cheaper to replace a halogen bulb once the vehicle is out of warranty.
Not to mention if things go south with the steering responsive headlight it is quite pricey to replace.
If you want brighter, whiter light there are more than enough aftermarket bulbs out there to get ya where ya wanna be.
On a side note for those who whine about the lack of rear vents one should look under the front seats.
Subaru has been doing this since the 80s.
The power supply for the rear passengers is in the armrest console hence why the cutout to run charging cables to the rear.
They do this because if they put them in the rear stack they are subject to dirt, grime, and getting kicked while something is plugged into them all of which could cause a malfunction.
Kids don't always pay attention to where their feet are.

I'm not usually critical of online reviews, but this one particularly annoys me. Why so judgemental that people won't take their luxury 4wd's offroad, or if this is about as much mud as people will expose their cars too? People buy whatever cars they can afford and if part of that means they want to offroad it, they will. If not, then no. Also rallying success does not equate to obstacles traction control, they're very different.

In theory yes, but in reality a low amount of people take their luxury off-roading... unless we’re talking about Dubai.

Cabin Noise, offer a sound dampening package, people would definitely pay an extra $1,000 to silence the cabin
There is nothing "wrong" with the transmission but the droning is super annoying and I feel like its bottlenecking the engine.

Agree Andrew, previous years were a tad noisy. Crosstrek changed its platform in 2018. I bought a 2019 6 speed manual Crosstrek Sport (Canadian) & found it quieter, but it revs high on the highway at 100 km/hr, even in 6th gear. My wife bought a 2021 Crosstrek Limited & it is even quieter again. The new 2.5L revs so low on the highway. Nice quiet & smooth ride. They must have upgraded the insulation in 2021.
