    Subaru owes you a commission check. I bought this car because of this video. You can't test drive off-road and I don't trust anyone at the dealership to help with these questions. I got stuck on a hill like this in Death Valley in my previous truck. This thing is amazing. Took it off the lot with 6.3 miles on it! Your comment about taking your wife's car off-road with 97 miles was priceless!

      @@PD-bt1ko It will never be a serious offroad rig because of the CUV platform and the fragility of plastic bumper covers, exposed rockers, and AWD. It can still be WAY more capable as an overlander than even this video shows though.
      Imagine if he disconnected the anti-swaybar(s), aired down some siped 75R15 ATs/MTs, added some underside armor, then installed a winch and a rear diff-locker. Most of these changes don't even have to be expensive.

    As a fellow Washingtonian; I'm happy to see a review with this model out in the woods! Both of my current vehicles are equipped with 4WD and lifted because I spend entirely more time in the woods than pavement. I'd like to see how she does in some snow or mud tho.. 🤔

    • @clappedoutsubieshoopties2216
      @clappedoutsubieshoopties2216 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just depends on the depth and condition of the snow and how the Subaru is equipped. I've been able to plow through fresh snow half way up my wheels on mud terrains. But not having a low gear makes it tough in some cases.

    never ever thought I would buy a Subaru but I did. Got a 2020 Forester..... made in Japan with 85% Japanese parts.... really only had this car for a few weeks and it is amazing. Also the dealership we bought it from (Subaru of Grapevine Texas) has been ..well it is best said...whatever you have heard BAD about a dealership these guys have been 100% the opposite. No pressure, presented the cars we thought we would like, let us look and drive them, they suggested items and if we were not interested the suggestion was dropped without comment. Very, very personalized service, even to point of providing personalized instruction on how to use all the features..... and this was a $30k car not a $150k were one would expect ass kissing service. We will buy another Subaru.

    Subaru is finally on the right path with the Crosstrek. I think another 20 HP and an additional couple inches of suspension lift would really be a game changer. But, like Subaru basically said for nearly a decade, we sell so many Crosstreks that we don't care what a small segment of customers want. Hopefully the leaked "Wilderness" models coming out in a couple years will be beefed up off roaders. We'll have to wait and see.

    One minor point; you mentioned it gave up 1 mpg on the highway to the 2 liter. I think it's the other way around; 34 mpg on the 2.5 vs 33 on the 2 liter. But the 2 liter wins in the combined because of a slightly superior in-town performance, so the smaller engine ends up a better option for predominantly city driving.

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good catch. 2.5 is down 1 MPG combined, but the highway is +1 over 2.0. Either way I think it's close enough that it shouldn't be a deciding factor. Impressed that Subaru managed to get such good MPG out of that 2.5.

    Of all the Subaru models out there, I like the Crosstrek the most. Its like one of those scratching lotto tickets you can buy for a dollar. You know your not going to win but its fun, cheap and disposable.
    I remember my first ride in my first subaru. The new car smell was unlike any other car I had before. That was partly because I forgot to take off the parking brake, but once my rims stopt glowing orange from the heat, It was still good to go and the burned rubber/forged steel smell went away after a couple of months.
    Mine also got a special coating to protect the paint. I think its called the fukushima packedge and they only offered it the year I bought my car, what a luck.

    What pissed me off about the OG Crosstrek is that Subaru knew *damn well* the 2.5 would fit. The same ( or basically same, for the most part ) platform gets a 2.0T stuffed into it in the WRX and a 2.5T in the WRX STI.
    They did this, keeping the crosstrek with a 2litre, because they didn't want to eat the outback's lunch. Subaru knew that if they had a 2.5 Option, and it was *cheaper* than an outback and nicer inside, they'd loose sales to the Crosstrek.
    So they made it a very, very, bad hybrid, and acted like that was what people wanted.
    Basically, nobody wanted the hybrid, it wasn't "better", it was just more expensive and got similar fuel economy, with added complexity. Even back then people wanted the 2.5.
    This isn't even to bother digging into the question of WHY DID THE XV SHIP WITH A 5 SPEED IN 2013?
    They've started to listen to their consumers ( The Offroad version of the XV, and Outback, for instance ) and, lo and behold, THEY'RE MOVING MORE METAL.
    Subaru needs to take less than, y'know, most of a decade, to figure out what it's customers want.

      @@baetsimpson I've driven the 6MT, and the whole point of a manual transmission is driving enjoyment, but the Crosstrek was so numb on feeling, so difficult to be smooth in likely because of driveline issues due to constant AWD, and gates so smooshy with a lifeless clutch and lackluster acceleration that there was nothing fun about it. Had to hard pass. If this at least had a DCT I could maybe see going with it now that it has a better engine, but CVTs are also just no fun.

      @@baetsimpson Try them out first, I hated the CVT in the Crosstrek. Then go drive a Corolla CVT, its sooooo much better because it has a real 1st gear for launching, and then the CVT takes over. Basically go to a stop sign, and just floor it in the CVT Crosstrek, it feels a donkey is struggling on ice to pull you forward and its actually accelerating better from 30mph showing that its just the typical problem of CVT gearing. You can only get so wide a range on a CVT, so to get the rpm's low on the highway they geared it tall so its like starting a manual transmission in 2nd gear with lots of clutch slip. And again manual transmissions are NOT universally fun, only GOOD manual transmissions are fun. Drive a 2016 Colorado for example with the manual, they are horrible, I'd take an automatic on that car any day. This is coming from someone that has only ever owned manual transmission cars from SRT4, to Focus ST, to Abarth, to Corvette.

This is what makes Subaru different, remember the Baja xt? Yeah, they’re a little crazy over there. And we love it. I love the car I just got and have no regrets the 2020 are everything you could want. Honestly if you’re thinking about going Subaru now is the time. Their new 2020 models are priced well and out compete most similar models in poor road conditions. Subaru has stepped up their interior game as well. The new cross trek sport and adding turbos back to outback gives me some hope for Subaru where I was starting to loose it. ( forester x trim) yeah you know that orange line car...

      The other thing I would add is that the Crosstrek functions well not just for soft roading or overlanding but also as a daily commuter. It's very comfortable, easy to operate, and great on gas. While a Jeep may get into more difficult terrain (although I suspect the Crosstrek would go about 85-90% of the places a Jeep could) it makes for a terrible daily use vehicle. Harsh ride, poor handling, heavy and sad fuel economy, not to mention questionable build quality.

      @@MNsaint I even wrote a massive letter to Subaru of America to express my outrage, shown below:
      I was very excited when I heard rumors the Crosstrek was going to receive an upgraded higher-output powerplant option. Although I enjoy the fuel economy of the FB20 engine in my 2014 XV Crosstrek, there are times that I more than wish, but actually needed a little more power.
      However, I was quite disappointed to find out that the new Crosstrek Sport, equipped with the FB25, cannot be had with the 6-speed manual transmission. While I do understand that Subaru drivers such as myself who actually do purchase manual transmission vehicles are now considered an extremely tiny minority of Subaru buyers, I would like to remind the company that it was devout enthusiasts such as myself that helped influence many friends and family members that would eventually become future Subaru drivers and/or owners.
      Make no mistake, that I am being quite genuine here. My 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek with the 5MT is a car I continue to drive, and as of this email being sent, is in service for the brake safety switch recall and major maintenance service. I even went forward with the warranty service of the excessive oil consumption issue years ago, which showed me back then that Subaru was quite dedicated to retaining customer trust for mistakes that were made.
      Again, I must reiterate I understand that with increasingly-stringent regulation on both emissions standards as well as fuel-efficiency requirements, manual transmissions are increasingly more-difficult to provide to customers, especially considering the separate testing needed. And in fact, the Crosstrek PHEV is a direct answer to one of the letters I wrote years ago to SOA, which will help positively contribute to the Subaru lineup's average fuel economy.
      However, Subaru is the final car manufacturer to provide a manual transmission with all-wheel drive on an SUV-like unibody platform. I am aware the FB20 will continue to offer the 6-speed manual transmission, but I cannot help but feel betrayed that the FB25 does not have a 6MT available. The days of a high-output turbocharged boxer engine paired to the high-riding ground clearance of the SUV-like models with the pure driving enjoyment of a manual transmission on a new Subaru vehicle are no-more. But, I truly think that this is a great opportunity to leave off the end of this generation Crosstrek's lifecycle with a 6MT paired to the Sport's higher-output FB25 engine in the spirit of those discontinued vehicles' spirits.

      @@go0b3rtron7 Hi, price MSRP in Canada is $29,995 which is called the Crosstrek Outdoor in Canada. The new 2.5 182 HP and 176lbs torque is so much better than the base 152hp. Now I just need to decide on the colour. Hahaha. Can't wait to get it!

    Awesome review! I just drove this version today and LOVED it! Shocked compared to the previous Subaru I drove two years ago with the 2.0 engine. What a difference. I will say, my Type A cringed to see you had over 110,000 unread emails!!!!! LOL. I was very impressed with the CVT too. My only dislike with the seats were the thigh support. You can’t raise the front of the seat, which I like to do since I tend to sit a little closer than most people with my alligator arms and needing extra leg support having had a hip replaced. But, they were still adequate for me and not a deal breaker....I’m comparing it to the new KIA Seltos, but this has the edge so far. Seltos is a first year model, and no adaptive cruise!! Completely agree with the ooomph over 60mph. I tested the passing power from 65-70 and found it great. And my normal daily driver is a Tesla Model 3 with the performance upgrade. I loved the paddles! The normally aspirated engine is refreshing compared to many engines today with turbo. Can’t imagine how this car would perform with good off-road or snow tires in the winter!!!

    Lack of LED headlights at $28k is unforgivable when you can have them standard in a base Corolla.

    Great detailed review; love how you can do a ‘real’ off-Road test with a new vehicle. Also, great explanations on all the systems without getting overly technical.

    Thank you!! I like the fact you are using same off road section to do an even test. That is a nice little vehicle!!
