  • Airbus has enjoyed a successful period in the market recently, and the A320 and A330 have become extremely popular in the airline industry. But these jetliners do feature one intriguing quirk. Passengers on the A320 and A330 can expect to hear a barking noise emanating from the plane at some point during their flight! So what is the cause of this unusual barking dog sound?

    Hi there, ex A320 engineering technical instructor here. A few little facts that weren't really mentioned. The hydraulic systems on the A320 are Green, Yellow and Blue. The PTU is connected between the Green and Yellow Hydraulic Systems and also operates when there is a 500psi differential between the Green and Yellow System. e.g green system drops from 3000psi to 2400psi and yellow is 3000psi the PTU operates. You may also here the PTU when raising the landing gear. This is due to when the valves open on the Green side of the system to pressurize the landing gear actuators there is a drop in pressure as the hydraulic lines need to be pressurized from the valve to the landing gear actuator. The pressure drop is sensed and the PTU operates to increase the green system to 3000psi. once at there is less that a 500psi differential the PTU stops operating.

      @ShaolinCheems 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does this occur during the other phases of flight too such as when the pilot is maneuvering and configuring the airplane for a landing which would involve the application of pressure on ailerons and other control surfaces? That activity would set off some actuators too which would require the expenditure of hydraulic fluids, isn't it? Is it possible that during such times we just don't hear the PTU because its sound is drowned in the drone of the jet engines? I am curious to know. Thanks.

    Yeah, I have heard it before, it was on a Qatar Airways A319-112 A7-CJA and A7-CJB, first time I heard it, I was like what in the world, I asked the technical staff onboard who told me about the PTU. It was just before pushback tug would push the aircraft from the ramp to the parking area on the airport's outskirts and vise versa when the aircraft was towed back before departure. The pilots also operated the PTU as the aircraft shuts down at the gate though I never heard it in flight. I was working as an Airport Service Agent for QR in SEZ at the time and part of the job was to secure the aircraft. Also got the chance to hear the same thing when they started operating the A330.

    Hear it all the time.pretty much guessed that it was hydrolic stuff, but did not know about the PTU. Love making others on the flight feel unconfortable by saying : This noise is not normal.... there must be a problems with the engines... I hope they do not decide to take off anyway... Sometimes they take the risk... ( watch the old lady sitting on the other seat change color...) :D

      @@CaliforniaFly strange. I've flown A320 and it was OK. 737-800 was a real sardine can, SUPER uncomfortable. Now, the Embraer 190.. that one is really spacious. But like everything, I suppose it all comes down to whatever the airline decides.

    Heard the noise many times on Airbus, the crazy thing is I knew exactly what it was from the sound of it.
    It sounds exactly like what it is - a pump operating momentarily to top up pressure. Logic tells you that it would be the hydraulics since these are in high demand during takeoff.

    have only flown twice on 320's, but noticed a large number of noises coming from under the floor. I figured they were all related to control surface actuators on the wing as i was sitting right above it. With all the work that went into designing those aircraft, you'd figure that the engineers would consider it something passengers would rather not be hearing and design the controls differently. One constant noise sounded a bit like landing gear doors banging. Plane had a nice comfortable interior, but the noises were not at all comforting. And I'm used to flying on 737's and some turboprops!

    NEO's still seem to do this. It seems Airbus was very nostalgic about the year 1986 when they started building the A320 and who could blame them - it was one of the best years out there.

    The A-320 PTU....know it well. I test it every single day. Have worked for Triumph Aerospace for 20 years, spent the last 18 testing the PTU for Airbus. It's a finicky pump/motor....but we are the only supplier for Airbus. If you hear it barking, it's doing it's job. I do music stuff on the side, hence my user name. Cool video!

  • @anjanravisrinivasan1131
    @anjanravisrinivasan1131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    And this is a good reason why we inform the cabin crew if we are performing a single engine taxi, as the PTU sound can be mistaken by passengers as a fault, which might cause panic/anxiety. The cabin crew, armed with this information, can inform the passengers this is normal.

  • @andrecarlos985

    It's the power transfer unit. Simply put it's a hydraulic unit consisting of a fixed flow pump connected mechanically to a variable flow pump that interconnect two of the three hydraulic systems. At the first engine start this unit provides hydraulic pressure to the units that are fed by the other engine hydraulic pump. Cargos doors actuation inhibit the power transfer unit from operating, unless the electrical pump is activated by the flight crew.
    The primary function of this unit is to provide hydraulic power in case of an engine out (as the engine driven pump will be inoperative too) as this unit is bidirectional any engine out on any engine will not result in an inoperative hydraulic system, assuring full control of flight surfaces and landing gear extension.

    Yeah actually went to Raleigh to Orlando and heard this noise after landing and before take off.It was slow both times I flew but it was quite annoying as it goes on for like almost 5 minutes or sometimes 10.Cool to know that its just hydraulics doing their magic.
