Few people understand how difficult it is to simply explain complex subjects to a non-technical audience. You do a magnificent job sir. 5/5. You understand your material and target audience, and consistently maintain your discussions at that level. For those that are not professional trainers; it is VERY difficult to train technical subjects without level jumps and slipping into using technical jargon without explanations. I commend you sir for a great channel with interesting and educational content.

I finally know what the Bus whine on approach is - thank you. I work at an airfield over which eastbound aircraft fly on approach to Boston. They typically are at 9500 or so according to FR24 so a bit higher then you mention. I finally identified the Airbus as the noise maker after repeated tracking of individual flights. Had now idea what that noise was.
I don’t get it either. One of the biggest benefits I have from working at an airport is that if my supervisors or managers have been stupid and I’m now cranky, I can just go outside to the pedestrian areas of the airfield and just watch the planes takeoff and land. It isn’t long before I’m soothed back into a good mood.

Two years late but if you want to know the insane levels of effort we ground handlers put into helping make the aircraft safe I’m happy to answer or explain. And if I don’t know the answer, give me a couple days and I can just ask some of the engineers and pilots. They’re used to my curiosity by now.
Here's one I heard recently. From the emergency exit door, right at rotation and touch down, a loud whistling sound that rose in pitch, ending with a pop. I thought maybe it had to do with cabin air pressure and a leak in the exit door seal. I told the attendant when I disembarked.
Ive heard that one before, it whistles higher and higher until it stops, I assumed that it was just the door getting seated with internal pressure until it finally seals.
Oh my friend you’re not crazy. I work in ground handling at my local airport and I always know what kind of aircraft is taking off without looking. I only realised I’d subconsciously learnt this when I spooked my entire team when the 787-800 landed but I had no way to see it from my position and remarked. “Oh the Dreamliner is down.” (The common name of the 787.)
I love that the FlyByWire team for the A320NX mod in MSFS2020 added a lot of these sounds. Even the ground crew call horn works. It's by far my favorite jet to fly because of all the improvements they did with it.

Exactly my thoughts on it, reminds me a bit of the sound of huge capacitors charging up on something like a big pulse laser or a railgun or coilgun! The high pitched sound of that power building gives me goosebumps every time! About a month ago on my commute home from work I had the good luck to pass Cleveland's airport right as a jet (even though the highway is right next to the airport and they fly right over as they land, there are ofc way less flights these days) flew directly over me to land! My windows were down and it made that incredibly powerful noise, so now I know it was an Airbus!

The ghostly howl from the underwing apertures on the A320 are very clear when that plane comes over my house at 10,000ft and 350mph (thanks Plane Finder and Flightradar24). I’ll miss that sound
Yeh same it comes over about 3,500 - 5,000 ft I used to hear it a lot especially when I was younger , but not really anymore as hardly any flights and EasyJet don’t fly to Newcastle much anymore
I love how you guys cross pollinate each other. I am a huge fan of this channel, Capt Joe, Dutch pilot girl, Juan the Blancolirio guy, the 74 gear guy, and Alex the A380 guy. As a whole you guys do so much for the aviation community. This comment is like saying you are putting a GE90 on the new 777x and saying the GE90 sounds better on the 777x. The a320 has the same engines as the 737.
Came here to learn about the PTU barking sound, but also was pleasantly surprised to see the sound I hear so often (14:07) explained. I live under one of the final approach paths for MAN about 15nm away, so I hear it pretty much daily, depending on the wind directions.

When I hear that howling noise I take a look in Flightradar24 and it's always a British airways Airbus 319/32x. Approaching GOT from London. But I thought it was the engines, so thanks for explaining it is the holes.
This was awesome to watch/listen to. The 737 and A320 are the only commercial jets that come into Queenstown (despite it being an intl airport...yay mountains and mad terrain), and I live not far from the end of the runway, and this clarifies how I can tell who/what's taking off or landing far more clearly than my educated guessing!
On the last point about the high pitched sound that the A320’s vents make, I think it’s similar to the whistle P-51 Mustangs make when they’re doing acrobatics. Apparently, the whistling comes from air moving over the gun ports during certain angles of attack.
I remember watching the CaptainJoe video on the "bark" sound and instantly thought of this at the start. I love how you linked to his video & provided links to everyone else's videos in the video description. You're obviously such a smart guy already but it's nice that you also spread the credit out to everyone else as well. Last time when I was flying to Oslo from Budapest, the plane was almost empty, so the cabin was really quiet. I was sitting in the 6th row, I could hear when the pilot disconnected the autopilot before landing :D

I live in Asunción, were lots of A320 from LATAM, Avianca and recently JetSmart operates, you can hear that whinning noise at certain speeds, not only on approach but on take-off also and i always been curious about that particular noise on A320's but no on 737 or others. I first tought it was the V2500 engine, then they operated the CFM's an got that noise too, i thought it was the Wingfences, then they brought the Sharklets but still making that lovely nice sound, but my anwser finally came with this video. I love that sound, i love your channel.
When I hear a flight above me, then I check flightradar24. Most often it is comercial aircraft about to land at EKCH 22 L. I did not notice if Airbus or Boeing. Thanks for video. Now I will notice companies not careing about noise when landing close to populated areas.

I used to fly for work alot in the 90's and 2000's. Most of the flights were MD80's. I always wondered what the sound was during landing from below that sounded like a pump or something. It was like a mediumlow pitch siren sound.
Suggestion on what would probably be several videos (if you haven't covered this already): aside from simply getting off and back to the ground safely, the most important aspect of flight is navigation: Where are you? Where do you want to go? How do you get there? A video or several on navigation would be fantastic.
I am a bit of a nervous flyer, so your videos are really great for me to understand what is going on! I used to be really afraid of flying when I was a kid (afraid of heights combined with travel sickness), but once I got on a 'testflight' for firsttime flyers it has been a lot better. (Little cityhopper going from Amsterdam to Zurich and back). Yeah sure, I still get nauseous when hit with bad turbulence and if I am not able to see an horizon when the plane takes a turn... but at least I can sit back and be comfortable most of the time.
I live on an approach path, so I constantly hear the noise of planes passing overhead. It used to make my stomach turn when I was much younger, as I used to have a fear that it would “fall from the sky” and into my house. 💀 Now, I’m much more informed and I love to hear and see the plane! I even now check my flight radar for it.

Most interesting thing I've seen on the internet this month.. I've heard that sound so many times from my back yard when planes line up for 33R at Toronto. I was guessing it was flaps coming down. And the pump noise always reminds me of a cordless drill running out of battery.
LOL, re-watched this video after you mentioned it in your most recent Mentour Now video, and literally had an A320 go over the final approach path above my house right after you finished explaining it! XD Nobody around here has bothered doing the upgrade it doesn't seem like.
I'll give you a story, not sure if its normal or not. Happened on an easyjet a320: we were taxiing towards takeoff, an the lights randomly blinked 2 times...all of them, it just became pitch black for a moment. People looked at each other, noone said anything, I was not really worried as well, as a frequent easyjet flyer I trust them. But that was still an eerie feeling, never seen that happen before or since.

I live by the BAE VOR near MKE and hear #3 a lot. I've only flown in an Airbus once and when I heard #2 on takeoff, I was really surprised. Like a car horn until throttle back.
I'm a 737 lover but everytime I board a320, I always amazed with barking dog sounds also, I really love its screaming CFM on take-off and can notice a320 miles away by its howling sound during approach. A320 is unique by it self, and every type of similar aircraft somehow like having its own personality that need to be handled differently (i.e. IAE and CFM a320 or screaming JT8D on Jurassics 737) 😊 Note: in my homeland, Jurassics are still flying in military service as of 2020 so when it comes to my hometown for maintenence, I can hear the thunder before the lightning 😉

Finally someone tells me what is it the howling noise of the A320s on long final to PMC above my home in Frutillar, Chile! Thanks, Peter, very good topics in this video. As a former prívate pilot single land, mainly of very old planes, such as my PA22 and my flying club's M20J, I relied a lot on my ear to catch anormalities and outside of the envelope things. It was vital when once I lost airspeed indicator on take off and botching the take off was not a option then so I had to keep going and fly a long pattern and land without airspeed indicator, keeping adequate airspeed just by the noise (later the A&P mech found a dead bee embeded within the pitot tube). And when flying as a pax on commercial jets, I am always listening to all sounds and knowing from most what is actually happening. But today You taught me several new things!
I love the bark of the A320s blue line electric hydraulic pump to ptu unit. Nothing to worry about, and If you bark right back at it, it will stop. The barking is usually due to moving flaps, slats and the baggage hold doors being open or closed. Those doors are hydraulically open and shut.
Petter, I have one little issue, as you talked about the PTU. You used an old Hydraulics Chart for the A320, and most people won't even understand, why I'm so triggered. Airbus decided to move NWS from HYD G to HYD Y, to keep it operational, if you need to gravity extend the gear. Seems after all too many A320 had to be towed off the RWYs after such a maneuver to justify a recertification. And you were right, you had one thing in your video, which really surprised me, which actually was the fuel tank pressure valves and the blowing over a bottle whistle-effect. Great video, good work, and for not having a type rating on an A320 really well prepared and explained.

I always thought the barking sound was the pilot testing the rudder. Oh well, you learn something new every day! I also live in the approach path of Manchester, and I like the howling sound, didn't realise it was only the a320 until today. 🙂

Last time when I was flying to Oslo from Budapest, the plane was almost empty, so the cabin was really quiet. I was sitting in the 6th row, I could hear when the pilot disconnected the autopilot before landing :D
You can hear it very clearly on an Airbus from the first few rows not so much in a boeing !

@@uzaiyaro That is part of the engine start procedure engine fire test 1 and 2 it's normal procedure though the alarm can sound scary for nervous flyers !

I live in Asunción, were lots of A320 from LATAM, Avianca and recently JetSmart operates, you can hear that whinning noise at certain speeds, not only on approach but on take-off also and i always been curious about that particular noise on A320's but no on 737 or others. I first tought it was the V2500 engine, then they operated the CFM's an got that noise too, i thought it was the Wingfences, then they brought the Sharklets but still making that lovely nice sound, but my anwser finally came with this video. I love that sound, i love your channel.
When I hear a flight above me, then I check flightradar24. Most often it is comercial aircraft about to land at EKCH 22 L.
I did not notice if Airbus or Boeing.
Thanks for video. Now I will notice companies not careing about noise when landing close to populated areas.

I love the A320 howl. Heard it a lot as a kid when staying at my grandparents house, and haven't heard it much since.
I used to fly for work alot in the 90's and 2000's. Most of the flights were MD80's. I always wondered what the sound was during landing from below that sounded like a pump or something. It was like a mediumlow pitch siren sound.
I have heard that barking sound and I thought it was the flaps.

Suggestion on what would probably be several videos (if you haven't covered this already): aside from simply getting off and back to the ground safely, the most important aspect of flight is navigation: Where are you? Where do you want to go? How do you get there? A video or several on navigation would be fantastic.

I am a bit of a nervous flyer, so your videos are really great for me to understand what is going on! I used to be really afraid of flying when I was a kid (afraid of heights combined with travel sickness), but once I got on a 'testflight' for firsttime flyers it has been a lot better. (Little cityhopper going from Amsterdam to Zurich and back). Yeah sure, I still get nauseous when hit with bad turbulence and if I am not able to see an horizon when the plane takes a turn... but at least I can sit back and be comfortable most of the time.
I live on an approach path, so I constantly hear the noise of planes passing overhead. It used to make my stomach turn when I was much younger, as I used to have a fear that it would “fall from the sky” and into my house. 💀 Now, I’m much more informed and I love to hear and see the plane! I even now check my flight radar for it.
The 'barking' sound was something that i was a bit curious about, thanks for the education!

Living close to Biggin Hill I frequently hear that howl but never knew what it was. I always associated it with the engines.
I am not a nervous flyer, turbulence tends to put me to sleep. But I have always wondered what that barking noise was, so thanks!
The Airbus high whine on approach is the sound of my childhood living under an approach path
Most interesting thing I've seen on the internet this month.. I've heard that sound so many times from my back yard when planes line up for 33R at Toronto. I was guessing it was flaps coming down.
And the pump noise always reminds me of a cordless drill running out of battery.

LOL, re-watched this video after you mentioned it in your most recent Mentour Now video, and literally had an A320 go over the final approach path above my house right after you finished explaining it! XD Nobody around here has bothered doing the upgrade it doesn't seem like.
I'll give you a story, not sure if its normal or not. Happened on an easyjet a320: we were taxiing towards takeoff, an the lights randomly blinked 2 times...all of them, it just became pitch black for a moment. People looked at each other, noone said anything, I was not really worried as well, as a frequent easyjet flyer I trust them. But that was still an eerie feeling, never seen that happen before or since.

The coolest thing I ever saw while flying was seeing the shadow of denser air on top of a wing.
I live by the BAE VOR near MKE and hear #3 a lot. I've only flown in an Airbus once and when I heard #2 on takeoff, I was really surprised. Like a car horn until throttle back.

I'm a 737 lover but everytime I board a320, I always amazed with barking dog sounds also, I really love its screaming CFM on take-off and can notice a320 miles away by its howling sound during approach. A320 is unique by it self, and every type of similar aircraft somehow like having its own personality that need to be handled differently (i.e. IAE and CFM a320 or screaming JT8D on Jurassics 737) 😊
Note: in my homeland, Jurassics are still flying in military service as of 2020 so when it comes to my hometown for maintenence, I can hear the thunder before the lightning 😉

Finally someone tells me what is it the howling noise of the A320s on long final to PMC above my home in Frutillar, Chile! Thanks, Peter, very good topics in this video.
As a former prívate pilot single land, mainly of very old planes, such as my PA22 and my flying club's M20J, I relied a lot on my ear to catch anormalities and outside of the envelope things. It was vital when once I lost airspeed indicator on take off and botching the take off was not a option then so I had to keep going and fly a long pattern and land without airspeed indicator, keeping adequate airspeed just by the noise (later the A&P mech found a dead bee embeded within the pitot tube).
And when flying as a pax on commercial jets, I am always listening to all sounds and knowing from most what is actually happening. But today You taught me several new things!
I love the bark of the A320s blue line electric hydraulic pump to ptu unit. Nothing to worry about, and If you bark right back at it, it will stop. The barking is usually due to moving flaps, slats and the baggage hold doors being open or closed. Those doors are hydraulically open and shut.
Petter, I have one little issue, as you talked about the PTU. You used an old Hydraulics Chart for the A320, and most people won't even understand, why I'm so triggered. Airbus decided to move NWS from HYD G to HYD Y, to keep it operational, if you need to gravity extend the gear. Seems after all too many A320 had to be towed off the RWYs after such a maneuver to justify a recertification.
And you were right, you had one thing in your video, which really surprised me, which actually was the fuel tank pressure valves and the blowing over a bottle whistle-effect. Great video, good work, and for not having a type rating on an A320 really well prepared and explained.
I absolutely love the screaming GE TF39's on take off. I'm just glad I don't live around anywhere they would be. I love sleep a little more..
