Villenueve’s Dune Part One tells Paul’s “heroes journey” following Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth of 1. Call to Adventure - Paul’s dreams of Chani, 2. Rejecting the Call - Refusing to become heir to Duke Leto Atreides, 3. Supernatural Aid - Bene Jeserit test, 4. First Threshold - Arriving to Arrakis, 5. Belly of the Whale - Learning the ways of the Freman. The important thing about Villenueve’s Dune Part Two and the rest of Frank Herbert’s first Dune book is that it cuts Paul’s heroes journey short, so he appears as a hero but truthfully he has gone astray from his real purpose. The second book and third film, Dune Messiah, is about Paul accomplishing his real purpose.
The first 3 books are quite linked, maybe Villeneuve will do book 2 and book 3 together in the next movie, as the TV miniserie 2003 ''Children of Dune'' did. The books 4, 5 and 6 are quite far in the future from the first 3 books : 3500 years and 5000 years after Dune 1,2,3.

Shadout Mapes failed to blood the Crysknife before sheathing it. Totally invalidates the movie...🙃 "This is a stupid ambush...they don't even have a fighting chance...." Er, that's the point. The military definition of an ambush is "premeditated murder." I think the second movie does a better job of clarifying the stakes in the second half than Herbert did himself.

Also, movie I’d like to recommend is Primer. It’s from 2004. It’s really excellent sci-fi.

I think Messiah is a good ending point, a solid Paul trilogy
