Local CCTV storage vs Cloud CCTV storage: Which is better?

  • Traditionally, video surveillance footage has always been stored locally. Local storage simply means anything that is ‘on-site’, such as an NVR, DVR or a NAS drive. However, in recent years ‘cloud-based’ technology has taken off, and we’re seeing more and more companies move services to the cloud.
So what’s the better option for your video surveillance footage? Local storage or cloud?
    Local storage
When considering storage options for video surveillance systems, local storage has habitually been the ‘go to’ preference for both businesses and security installers. Whilst local storage options such as NVRs and DVRs can record and store video pretty reliably, they’re not without their flaws.
Local recorders are vulnerable to malicious damage and theft, and if your recorder were to malfunction, you’re not usually notified until it’s too late - by which point you’ve already lost your footage.
In order to access local storage you often have to physically be on-site. This comes at the cost of accessibility, which can be a problem for large companies with multiple sites, or those companies who are in remote locations and need to access their footage quickly.
    Cloud storage
An alternative to local storage is storing your footage offsite, in the cloud. Storing your footage in the cloud, or adding cloud-backup to your recorder, means you can access your video from anywhere and add sophisticated features to a legacy security system.
Cloud opens up a greater opportunity for collaboration, as you can view all your cameras in one place, provide access to additional people and control their permissions.
As well as this, cloud video surveillance is more bandwidth friendly than you might think. Videoloft’s cloud platform has been tested and optimised for real world networks, meaning it will use as little bandwidth as possible.
With all these benefits you’d think cloud would be the obvious choice, but due to historical concerns around things like price and bandwidth usage it hasn’t been the default. At Videoloft, we’re seeing cloud get adopted more and more as these things become less of a barrier.
How to get cloud storage for your video surveillance system
Whether you’re looking to record straight to the cloud, or add cloud backup to your local recorder, we can help.
Videoloft is compatible with hundreds of leading camera brands, including Hikvision, Dahua, Axis and Lorex and can completely remove the need for a local recorder - simplifying the installation, saving space on-site and removing the risk of your local recorder being damaged or tampered with.
Some companies prefer a hybrid approach to video storage - keeping their local recorder and adding cloud-backup so that they can enjoy all the benefits of cloud, including remote viewing and centralised footage, whilst maintaining their local storage. Videoloft can add cloud-backup and remote viewing to any compatible recorder, and it takes just minutes to set up.
How to set up remote viewing for local storage
To set up Videoloft for your security system you’ll need a Videoloft Cloud Adapter. Our Cloud Adapter comes in 8, 16 and 80 channel versions and it just needs to be on the same local network as your NVR or DVR.
Once you have the Cloud Adapter on the same network, you can complete the set up using the Videoloft app - it takes just minutes to do!
