There's a church and school in a N Cal city, it has a beautiful little rose garden with a gazebo, walking path, a few trees, it's dedicated to a young girl who died of cancer..I ran into the girls mother there one day, she was watering, and I was telling her how nice it was, well she tells me when the girl was ill she was in a Bay Area hospital and Ronnie Lott was visiting that hospital and got to know the girl...Anyway when she passed, he paid for the whole memorial garden and everything in it....Nobody knows that...

I was flying between LA and Oakland back when Ronnie Lott was a Raider. He happened to be on the flight. In his street clothes he looked as if he was made of steel. Very impressive. He and his incredibly beautiful wife?, (I think), spent the entire flight in the aisle visiting with a young disabled fan. No one bothered them. No one tried to get in the middle of it. It was just so cool to see them simply hanging out with this kid. Pure class.

On a team of the decade that gets remembered for the offense, Ronnie Lott was every bit as dominate and good at defensive back as Joe Montana, Rice, Craig, Taylor, Cross, and Clark were at their offensive positions.

Ronnie was the most dangerous and feared safety, but also played as cornerback, and linebacker when needed. He was known as the Swiss Army man. Dude delivered vicious freight train hits that took offensive players out of the game both physically and psychologically. Look at all those hits. All high impact, all CLEAN. All this fuss from knuckle dragging fans about the NFL becoming 'soft', like anything below their sternums doesn't look like jello. And when he laid a blow, he laid it viciously and CLEANLY. As a Raider fan, I didn't get to appreciate how great he was until I watched him up close elevate an otherwise mediocre Raiders team in 1991. Earned a well deserved All Pro leading the league in interceptions. But more than that, he LED. That winning attitude he brought from San Francisco permeated that defense...one of the last times the Raiders allowed less than 300 points in a season. He could do it all defensively on the football field.

I remember like it was yesterday, how nervous I would get watching any NFL team pass the ball in a 49ers game because of Ronnie Lott. He would put the kind of hit on a receiver that sent a message. Not just to a receiver, or a team, but to everybody. Ronnie Lott’s HIT WAS HIS TACKLE. He could rearrange your ribcage or back without trying, and that’s when he WASN’T playing for the interception which he always was.
He was without a doubt, the SCARIEST DB in NFL history. The entire country would hold their breath watching their favorite receivers try to catch a pass - cuz here he comes from an unseen angle at top speed with his head down & shoulder squaring up… you just hoped your guy would get back up after a hit like that. And that look in his eyes… that sh*t could make your blood turn cold…
Ronnie Lott is the defensive player who made receiver stats like “catch %” or “yards after completion” a significant consideration.

if you caught a pass in Ronnie's part of the field, there was a price to pay for that. the next a pass was thrown to you there, you had to think about whether you wanted to pay that price again.

I'ts arguable he's the best defensive player of all time. What most people forget about Lott is that he came into the damn league as a corner, and moved to safety.
The guy could drape over anyone in coverage and rock you so damn hard you'd see stars.

There were a handful of DBs in Lott's Era that contributed to the NFL's decision to treat wide receivers as Hindu cows. Lott was one of a handful of DBs who could hit as hard or harder than linebackers and run as fast as the receivers. He was one of the most feared defenders in the league. The fact that he was on the field was already a distraction to the receivers. Receivers had to have their heads on a swivel if they still wanted to have their head when the game ended.

What a great player. Ronnie Lott was the total package. He played the run well, and unlike so many of these defensive backs today, if a pass hit him in the hands, HE CAUGHT IT.
Montana was a quiet dude. You can see from that last cut when the yeam was gathered after winning the Superbowl, who the leader was on those great 49er teams. It was Ronnie Lott.
If im making a team from whomever I want to choose in NFL history, Ronnie Lott is my SS.

1:22 perfection. I remember that game raiders were good in those days. Superbowl in 80 and 83. That play is 4th and one. And the runner is strong as hell a short 225 pound powerhouse (hawthorne or hawkins if i remember correctly.) Great call by the raiders! The play is going great too, the guards are hustling to make the blocks plunkett makes perfect handoff the back is going fullsteam. Unfortunately... Ronnie Lott is playing CB on that side of the line.

the play at the 2:00 mark really epitomizes that 81 team that won the first superbowl. so many times a guy was hit and another guy scooped up the reward. or a ball was hit and another guy intercepted it. That secondary is comparable to few and what was even more amazing is they were only Rookies (except Hicks the S who became All-Pro because of the three new rookies.) I don't think that will ever happen again in Football. I say with all my heart I have never seen a more exciting secondary than that one over the teams next four years or so.
