To see Dawkins make it in HOF and on this list brings tears to my eyes. My absolute favorite player who played for my favorite pro and college team. Both he and I go through chronic depression and suicidal ideation. It just goes to show how you can have impact on someone you never even met. Hearing him talk to Quentin Mikel just fills your heart up with pride because he sounds like a dad/coach/preacher all in one. You know he believes in it when he tell him to be what he knows he is. It's 100% possible to love football and also want to take steps to reduce the number of Mike Webster and Andre Waters outcomes. You don't have more claim to loving or knowing more about football just because for some weird reason your enjoyment of the sport is increased by brain injuries. The sport is, I agree, fundamentally violent and you can't legislate all the risk out of the game. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to reduce the head injuries that steal so much from so many later in life in a way that goes way beyond the purely physical risk all athletes accept. Why is that so scary to you? Why are you actively advocating for a return to a knowingly more dangerous time that will absolutely result in more tragic outcomes (Kevin Turner, Junior Seau, the list goes on)? You're essentially saying that these guys' lives are less important to you than the enjoyment you get out of seeing a receiver on a crossing pattern get vaporized. And that's not even considering all the guys that suffer the same issues but aren't making a pro or even college career. What happens in the NFL generally trickles down all the way to Pop Warner and the vast majority of guys- myself included- who played as kids won't play a down at the college level let alone see a penny from a professional contract. But some of those guys will still have accumulated 10+ years of hits that, under the old rules (which my playing years certainly all fell under as an over 40 guy), were not protecting the players in the same way we know now is possible while still keeping football entertaining for fans and players. I find it so weird- such an indictment of our society- that there's a vocal group actively opposing reasonable player safety measures. What kind of value system is that?
Ed Reed is the #1 safety of all time in my opinion he could do it all ballhawk, stop the run, get you 6,shut down a offensive player, man was the ultimate football player
Brian Dawkins is a top 5 free safety. He's the most complete safety ever. 3rd in sacks for safeties 20th in most tackles ever 13th in forced fumbles ever
How tf is Ed Reed 3rd on this list? He could literally do EVERYTHING you wanted in a safety and more. Best ball hawk, can cover man to man, plays the middle of the field extremely well, great tackler, extremely high football IQ and can lay the hat! Ronnie Lott deserves the #1 spot on this list, he was the engine to that defense and he literally gave it all. No other safety is crazy and willing to lose a body part like Ronnie Lott did when he opted to have his pinky finger amputated instead of missing playing time. He's the man for that alone.
@@RGsmokinthathunnitHMNdawgpound Its your opinion but when someone like Ronnie Lott is willing to lose his pinky finger and was one of the reasons they had 4 Super Bowl Trophies in the 1980's, nobody can top that and he was the best in his era. You can't top a hard-hitting safety like Ronnie Lott who's willing to lose a body part to keep playing.
@@RGsmokinthathunnitHMNdawgpound Yeah but when Ronnie Lott put a hit on someone, they think twice about going over the middle and he was the heart and soul of those defenses of the 49ers for those years.

Paul Krause getting 81 interceptions in the Dead Ball Era is easily one of the most impressive records in NFL history. Even in today's game with passing at an all-time high, nobody came close to sniff that record except for Rod Woodson (71).
Well now the quarterbacks are accurate as hell. Back then considering that there wasn’t a whole lot of throwing, the quarterbacks were probably less accurate, making it easier for interceptions. Still an incredible accomplishment.

It is absolutely criminal that Donnie Shell isn't in the Hall of Fame. Fourteen seasons, 51 interceptions, 5 Pro Bowls, 3x All-Pro and 4 Super Bowl rings and he has only been nominated to Canton once. Not only did Donnie Shell pass cover, he also hit people. Go ask Earl Campbell if Donnie Shell still keeps him up at night.
Actually I think the defense of the 1976 Steelers were at their finest. Remember that this team started out 1-4 and lost Terry Bradshaw to injury in week five and had to depend on the ground game and a stout defense that shut out their opponents 5 times in the final 9 games to win the division. Had Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier not been injured for the playoffs that year, they could have easily beat the Raiders and won their third Super Bowl in a row. Arguably one of the best teams NOT to win a Super Bowl.
People that say Sean was overrated obviously never watched him play. I got to see him play live and his highlights show how great he was on his way to being
Its not Reagan dude was a monster. Even Ed Reed says he was special. He was better than most people think. He was the complete safety that was dominant
Now that I would agree with. He played his first four years at corner then switched between strong safety and free safety. But as far as safeties alone? Even Lott himself said Reed is the best.
"One less finger..." Kenny Easley ended his safety career with one less kidney than he started with. And the one he had left was someone else's. All thanks to the copious amounts of ibuprofen the team provided him to take. He sued the Seahawks and settled out of court.
@1-800-Wavy Missing finger is referencing Lott and and the kidney was referring to Easley. The two have been compared to one another since the late 70's
Not quite the same bc they were drafted so far apart but Dawkins and Sean Taylor could have similar for a few years. But like I said not really the same as TP and Reed.
0:00 Brian Dawkins. 3:10 Donnie Shell. 6:10 Kenny Easely. 9:31 Steve Atwater. 13:01 Emlen Tunnell. 15:44 Ken Houston. 18:51 Troy Polamalu. 22:52 Ed Reed. 26:52 Paul Krause. 30:10 Ronnie Lott.
In 8 seasons he played a combined number of games, 48, equal to 3 seasons. His numbers and accolades make a case to be in the hall of fame, despite the short career. Not to forget, he should’ve added another hall of fame credential, as Super bowl MVP, over Manning, who had a sub par game, hell playoffs, altogether.
Ronnie Lott made me say "wow" more times when he hit players then any other safety I watched and when it came to coverage Ed Reed was the one having me say "wow". I'd say Ronnie was the best hitter and Reed best pass coverage. I'd have them as my 1 and 2 with Lott taking the top because his physicality was so feared that some guys dropped the ball even without being touched because they were worried about the hit coming if they thought he was in the area lol.
People forget about Bob Sanders. Yea he didn’t play a lot because of injuries all the time but when he did play an entire season healthy he won defensive player of the year playing in the same era as Ed reed, polamalu, Dawkins, and Sean Taylor. He literally gave the colts a defense by himself and won the super bowl with a int, and forced fumble. Imagine if he played 10 years healthy
this is awesome! from wikipedia: "EMLEN Tunnell enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. From August 1943 to July 1944, he served on the USS Etamin, a cargo ship that was manned by Coast Guard personnel and stationed in the South West Pacific Area.[9] In April 1944, while unloading explosives and gasoline at Aitape in Papua New Guinea, the Etamin was struck by a torpedo dropped from a Japanese airplane; Tunnell saved a fellow crew member who was set afire in the blast, beat out the flames with his hands, sustained burns to his own hands, and carried the shipmate to safety.[14][20] He was next stationed at San Francisco and Alameda from August 1944 to October 1945.[9] In the fall of 1944, Tunnell played at the halfback position for the San Francisco Coast Guard Pilots football team.[21] On November 11, 1944, he led the Pilots to a 13-0 victory over Amos Alonzo Stagg's Pacific Tigers football team, throwing 22 yards for a touchdowns and returning an interception 75 yards for another touchdown.[22] At the end of the 1944 season, he was named to the All-Pacific Coast service football team.[23] He also played basketball for the San Francisco Coast Guard, scoring 13 points in a December 1944 game against the California Golden Bears.[24] In March 1946, while stationed at Naval Station Argentia in Newfoundland, Tunnell rescued a shipmate who fell from the USS Tampa. Tunnell jumped into the 32-degree water and saved his drowning shipmate. In 2011, Tunnell was posthumously awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal for his heroism in rescuing his shipmates on the Etamin and Tampa.[20] On December 12, 2017, the Coast Guard announced that it planned to name its 45th Sentinel class cutter the USCGC Emlen Tunnell.[25]"
Thank you Jose Roberto, for this great article from Wikipedia! The only war hero on this list. Emlen really did revolutionized the safety position. Hard to believe he had 79 ints in an era where they ran the more than pass.

Totally agree Ronnie Lott the best ever safety. That one hit on Icky Woods changed the game, how many defensive players can do that? And if you watch that hit, it will be legal even today like most of his hits.
Paul Krause played the position like an MIT professor (that's a compliment) he perfectly knew the ankles and how much distance he could cover for an interception.
Better than Ronnie Lott now I don't think so no way. And I mean guy has 81 career interceptions that records never going to be broken so he got to give him some love so I had read his right where he belongs at 3 in my opinion

Its funny to think %50 of these tackles would be penalized nowadays. Its sad.
I was thinking the same thing. Rather than changing the game they should better compensate them.
alex formosa so true.
Sad that we want former players to remember their children's names when they're older? I like big hits and think certain rules have gone too far, but people nostalgic for the old days of brain-melting headshots are bad people.

Even in today's game with passing at an all-time high, nobody came close to sniff that record except for Rod Woodson (71).

ED reed and Troy had mvp linebackers and never the best player on their defenses to be fair ..
No doubt that if Pittsburgh had won the championship in 1976, it would be their greatest season during the dynasty.
Even as a Dallas fan I loved watching Dawkins do his thang on the field. Absolutely a freak of nature!

"One less finger..." Kenny Easley ended his safety career with one less kidney than he started with. And the one he had left was someone else's. All thanks to the copious amounts of ibuprofen the team provided him to take. He sued the Seahawks and settled out of court.
Remember Easley and Lott coming out of UCLA and USC. Big question was 'who do you take?'

"EMLEN Tunnell enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. From August 1943 to July 1944, he served on the USS Etamin, a cargo ship that was manned by Coast Guard personnel and stationed in the South West Pacific Area.[9] In April 1944, while unloading explosives and gasoline at Aitape in Papua New Guinea, the Etamin was struck by a torpedo dropped from a Japanese airplane; Tunnell saved a fellow crew member who was set afire in the blast, beat out the flames with his hands, sustained burns to his own hands, and carried the shipmate to safety.[14][20] He was next stationed at San Francisco and Alameda from August 1944 to October 1945.[9]
In the fall of 1944, Tunnell played at the halfback position for the San Francisco Coast Guard Pilots football team.[21] On November 11, 1944, he led the Pilots to a 13-0 victory over Amos Alonzo Stagg's Pacific Tigers football team, throwing 22 yards for a touchdowns and returning an interception 75 yards for another touchdown.[22] At the end of the 1944 season, he was named to the All-Pacific Coast service football team.[23] He also played basketball for the San Francisco Coast Guard, scoring 13 points in a December 1944 game against the California Golden Bears.[24]
In March 1946, while stationed at Naval Station Argentia in Newfoundland, Tunnell rescued a shipmate who fell from the USS Tampa. Tunnell jumped into the 32-degree water and saved his drowning shipmate. In 2011, Tunnell was posthumously awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal for his heroism in rescuing his shipmates on the Etamin and Tampa.[20]
On December 12, 2017, the Coast Guard announced that it planned to name its 45th Sentinel class cutter the USCGC Emlen Tunnell.[25]"
