I don't think you understand Sikh traditions, but from the society Sikhs came from, having a haircut was a ritual or religious manipulation, depending on what you followed. Keeping hair actually is one of the things that allowed Sikhs to be free from some of the backwards traditions and culture that was taking place just a few centuries ago.

So we the Sikhs believe that whatever happens in this world, happens by the will of god. And it is applicable to accidents too. So yeah, if you accidentally rip out a strand of your hair, with no intention whatsoever of doing the same, then it poses no problem. I understand the whole idea of identity crisis and stuff. But here’s the thing don’t jokingly state the fact that you were not stopped for random checks at the airport and don’t talk about being mocked. That kinda gives the essence that it wasn’t your thoughts but rather you were influenced by others and scared of mockery after all . You were weak, there’s nothing to be proud in being weak.
Even I was mocked in school days almost every day. My college crush rejected me just cos I was a Sikh ( she even said that she’d date me if I cut my hair). But here’s the thing don’t let others shape your personality or there will never be a true you. I followed Sikhism coz I relate to it.
If you don’t, I completely understand. But it would be better if you stated the true reason rather than the stating the benefits of cutting your hair.
If it was your sole decision I respect it. But your examples imply the opposite.

I agree that every person has a right to live the life they want just as they follow religion to the degree that they are comfortable with. Now answering this topic, indeed it is a personal choice but Sikhs keep their hair in acceptance to the eternal one god, accepting that the way god made us is perfect and by doing so; we to god, are showing detachment from the world and it’s temporary pleasures. People often doubt religion but never doubt society and it’s norms. In fact, in Holy scriptures as the bibles, there are often verses regarding keeping gods commandments. Specifically,
    Numbers 6:5
“All the days of his vow of separation, no razor shall touch his head. Until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the Lord, he shall be holy. He shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long.”
    And Namely,
    JOHN 14:15-17
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocatep to help you and be with you forever.17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
Keeping hair covered isn’t just within Sikhi but the Muslims, Jewish, and Catholic cover their head. It’s a sign of respect for the ever existing beautiful god that is around us.Sadly we grow up in a society where everything is questioned but never society itself. I’m sorry if this offends as anyone as it was not my intention and only to educate those who don’t know why. May God Bless you all. God loves you all

I don't agree with all the points made here, but I agree that keeping Kesh should be a personal choice and not define being a Sikh. If you're a Sikh at heart, cutting your hair doesn't change that. And if you're not a Sikh at heart, keeping uncut hair isn't going to change that. I'm also struggling with my identity because hair plays a big part in how I see myself, and long hair is just not who I am. It's not about fashion or people's opinions. I constantly have headaches, can't maintain my hair, it's unmanageable and frizzy, it causes unnecessary stress, and I hate the feeling of hair on my neck. I constantly have it up in a bun, and the weight outs stress on my neck and head and is really detrimental to me. My hair keeps getting stuck in things, I keep sitting on it, I can't eat with it open, I can't look how I want to. I just wish there wasn't such a stigma in the Sikh community. Please be more accepting of people's personal choices if they're not harmful to anyone.

i would say, a person who is a sikh and know about his history and have respect for it will not talk or think about cutting his/her hair just based on what other people say or having an identity that stands out. It will be disrespect towards all Guru Sahib's and Shaheed's who live their life to demonstarte what Sikhi is. If you want a haircut you can have a haircut, you are free to do it. But if, you say Sikhi is what you have inside your heart and hair doesn't matter then you don't know the history of Sikhi that you should be told by your parents and grandparents.

In today's world what needed is connecting with people and freeing them from their sorrows, although evry religion has its own values and customs what we are forgetting is why these religions were made in the first place, today's religion is Humanity and trust me Sikhi is nothing but humanity that excluded all the rituals that either harm nature or exploit people..... where as the issue goes for cutting your hair I think this should he your own personal taste and views, society would say a thousand words but if you don't love yourself the way you are yess change it because if you love yourself i believe you would love others too and it would give you more clarity what you want to be..... also keeping your hair is kind of a responsibility because you carry not just the faith with you but also the pride of our sikh warriors..... always being ready to help, always being ready to fight against oppression..... be strong and yess its totally ok to follow your dreams and passion..... we only have one life so yess live free......

We cut our and many sikhs cut their hairs because they have no significance nowadays whatsoever. Gone are those days where people kept long hairs, back in those days we had a simple life didn't have huge competition and didn't have to go to work. But nowadays everyone has work everyone has a fast paced life and vice versa. And in this day and age we can't take care of our long hair. It gets hard to clean and then we get head lice. Just take a look for once where this world has reached nowadays. We have reached cloud 9, we have reached planet moon and mars. But you muppets still have the old 17 th century outdated belief. There's no such pride in having kesh nowadays. Look where the world has reached and where you have still remained.
