Thank a little back story since you talked about Cooling Military Aircraft. My wife Dad, did a NEW plane delivery for Boeing. The Russians did the opposite. They had huge blanket covers for Aircraft to HEAT them. Anyway the Russian were interested in Boeing to show them a complete SHUT down of Aircraft and being able to START them off just Battery. My Wife's Dad flies into a very cold part of Russia. There was ICE on the inside of the makeshift Hotel that stayed in.
Boeing had to demonstrate to the Russian that a Boing plane could complete SHUT down and Start again. My wife's Dad said it was below Zero in the cockpit ( that had Artic gear on) started the Boing plane and took off. Just thought it was interesting you talked about Cooling the Aircraft before take off.

Make sure both primary and aux tank valves are open the aux tank is the valve closest to the blue line yall were referencing (in video around 1:16:50) brown handle valve is aux tank. Allow both tanks to fill completely and you cant use the main valve for starting need to hook the 2 small lines you have put together back on the soleniod and supply 12v to the soleniod or fix the start button. spray with either should pop right off. Keep up the good work maybe one day yall can say you're a mechanic lol

Disengage the a/c compressor. I think the big lever is in the wrong position. It appears that the engine is trying to turn the a/c pump at the same time as starting the engine.

I work on these in the air force. You need 150 psi to start most likely... We use portable air compressors. Make sure your fuel filters are primed all the way to the top and both valves are open on the tank. Also might need to open up valve covers and see if you got anything weird going on in there..

    • @big_stretch17
      @big_stretch17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also, another thing I remembered. Holding the engine hold button the bottom right one make sure it sends the governor fully out and springs back when you let go. That's putting the engine in full rack position at starting.

When I was in the Air Force, we used very similar units for cooling systems while we were doing function checks. I'm going to guess this was used for a larger plane, like a B-52, B-1, or something similar. Could it have been used for what you suggested? Absolutely. Thank you for your service.

Hank on that governor box on top is a solenoid that is air actuated. You can't bypass that because it is part of the safety kill switch to shut it down if it overheats, low oil pressure, or stops charging while it runs. You won't have any smoke out of the exhaust until you have fuel to the injectors. The air solenoid on top of the governor will hold it in the OFF position, hence holding the buttons for 15 seconds. That way the oil pressure comes up and the volts... then you can release it because it will be operating on its own. Can't wait to meet you sometime

Hank, you may perform a short cut by getting a larger volume air compressor and plumb it directly to the starter. Just make sure to use an air valve so you can "cut" the air once it starts. Get an air line quick release or a union and and plumb it direct into the blue (supply line to starter)line. Volume is the key on this project, you want that starter pinion to release once it starts and not get hung up on the fly wheel if the little bit of air being supplied is just enough to keep it engaged once the ol Detroit kicks over.

Hey! That 20 amp "fuse" is actually a circuit breaker!! Push it IN to turn on. This is a standard aircraft type breaker, and it works as a switch also; pull it out to turn the circuit off. You may have destroyed it when you pulled on it with pliers. Try shorting out the two screws on the back of it. The engine is indeed a 6V92T or TT turbocharged engine, probably around 350 HP and 1700--1800 RPM, although in some situations, it can be run at 2300. I had one in my bus motorhome, and it was excellent. The air cylinders on the governor are most likely for a fast idle setup. In that application, it sets the engine to a predetermined RPM, which is governed at that speed. The long cyl is for speed setting (screws in where the buffer screw was) and one on top of the governor blocks the throttle when in fast idle mode. In normal configuration, the starter is on the right hand side of the engine, as seen from the fan end.
I'm glad you came across one I had experience with. By the way, R134a is the current gas for mobile equipment.

When a Detroit is right they will start very quickly. I had a 12V/71 in my boat I would just bump the starter button, like you bump a key while typing, an a second later the engine would roar to life. I have an 8V/71 in my bus conversion and it is the same.

The R model Macks used by the Australian Army up until recently were all air start, and they where built in the mid/late 80's. That starter is going to need the tank to be charged to somewhere around 120PSI. That compressor should have an regulator on it that can be turned up to 110PSI (there will be a safety valve) or so. It should be able to charge the air system, It might just take a little time to fill is all.

By bypassing the control air to the starter and shutting off valve on top the side air tank you are preventing the front tank @9:19 to fill up thus having a small volume of air. I would suggest that you remove that union on the control air line and install a quarter turn valve instead that will act as your "starter switch", then that will allow you to have those big 1" valves open.

Rule number one of starting a 2-Stroke Detroit Diesel is to remove the valve covers and check the fuel rack to ensure that “The Rack” / “Injectors” are not frozen/stuck. If you have injectors stuck shut it will never start and if you have injectors stuck open the damn thing can run away from you. Additionally you need to ensure the blower flap is not tripped and the air cutoff flap works properly additionally on a startup of a Detroit that has been sitting it is a good idea to pull the air filters or hose between the air filters and the blower so that a board can be placed over it to choke the engine down while you are shutting the fuel valves off because rarely have I ever seen a board over the engine air inlet choke an engine out. With regards to the Air Starter you need to fill the air tanks to 120 pounds of air, all accessories need to be disengage ( i.e the A/C compressor clutch needs to be disengage) the fuel filters need to be full. This is a DDEC (Electronic controlled) engine so it you need to have battery voltage to run the ECU. It has been nearly 30 years since I fooled with air starter on DD and then it was a pair of early 80’s 8v71’s in a boat that was rigged up to spin the air starter off a CO2 bottle or the air storage tank on the boat on the port engine and start the start board engine from the port engine or it’s air starter. If you believe you do not have enough air try getting a CO2 or Nitrogen bottle with a regulator like is used to run air tools or a truck/piece of equipment with air brakes because that is what normally fills the air tank on trucks that used air starters. If you can’t figure this out I would suggest trying to contact Ole2Stroker or the BusGreaseMonkey

    G'day guys.
I live in a rural district and have an older Stihl FS90 which does a great job on most stuff including blackberries.
Now I also have an FSA130 battery operated unit which is at least as good and I bought the big backpack battery which can keep it running for up to five hours or so on low power.
It is nearly silent, doesn't create smelly toxic exhaust and starts at the mere squeeze of the trigger every, time which is great for older blokes like me.
It has variable power output and other than initial outlay is as cheap as it gets to run, doesn't need to be winterized and is almost as easy as drinking a soda to replace the line.
I also have a battery operated Stihl lawn mower and chain saw which are 'the bees knees' too.
They can all use the same battery and are equally easy to use and inexpensive to operate!
I know it reads like an advert but I assure you it is not, I am merely enthusiastic about Stihl gear because it is so good and was pleased to see you bought Stihl.

Not sure if that vertical tank you are charging is actually the air starter tank, The lines look too small. Usually there are two tanks on these systems with a check valve in the line between them

I'm curious about that blue handle is for on the control panel. Seen these handles many times on air and water systems. Definitely a volume problem, but anyway looks like fun.

Since that system has sat dormant for several years maybe a bit of air tool oil should be added to the air line going to the starter to loosen and lube thing up?

use a aircompressor designed for filling scuba tanks. these can reach about 120 psi. it will take some time but it'l work.

Interesting video and lots of great comments below. BUT, how about Googling the make and model number for an operation or service manual. There is really good chance you could RTFM, Read the Fine Manual. Well, some folks use a different word for the 'F'.
Anything military has to have a set of manuals. You could have wiring diagrams and step by step instructions.

The starter tank needs to be aired up and it should turn it over if you've got the air valve open from the tank. When I started the truck with unsuspecting people standing around it would startle most of them because it sounded like a giant air gun

run 12v to the air start solenoid (hotwire it) done. power to fuel cut off solenoid should help
not picking on you, sharing experience. All a solenoid needs is power, remove power when not needed

You need to pull off the valve covers and make sure you don't have any stuck injectors. If you do you'll have a run-away when it starts!

I would think hearing the air rush out of that air starter that the blades unit are stuck back with standing. I would pop the air line off the starter and drop some air gun oil in it and give some very low air pressure to blow the oil deep into the motor then leave stand while compressor fills the tank up. I would think it would fit you then

    • @michaelrauff734

I was thinking the same thing. My buddy had an air lug nut gun that wouldn't perform any useful work, turns out he never oiled it for the 20 years he owned it and said it was always a junk tool. I dumped a bit of oil in the tool and let it rip a few time and oh what a nasty rust slime that came out. But it did work correctly after some oil to lube up the internals.

    • @WidowUK
      @WidowUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@michaelrauff734 it sounds very much like the air starter is gummed up with sticky old oil, by putting some fresh oil in the air in pipe will save you having to pull it apart. Once you pull them apart there never right unless you rebuild them with new parts. But there seems to be a lot of air going in and no power and lots of air rushing out to me. It’s more than likely it’s all stuck up inside the thick old oil does not allow the blades to pop out and reseal so the air forces them back as it rushes past them. A good shot of atf or similar thin oil would help free it up or if you have at hand some air tool oil that would also work well.

You're talking CFM to run one of them. Air starters you need about 300 CFM at about 90 psi. I've been around some older Cummins engines that were like that so you guys were right. You just need something like one of them. Big industrial type units that runs an air hammer

I believe the second tank at the front of the machine needs to be filled with air too, I think that'a what the other valve is for and if the panel was working it would dump air from both tanks and get the engine cranked over

Yepy thoughts exactly both valves need to be thrown. Need to put a valve on solinoid line y'all by passed close it then throw both the valves on blue line. Then use smaller line to throw the "bendex".

you need to talk to mel gibson, he got that tanker in the desert to start up straight away....
when your air drill slows down, you squirt wd40 down the air hose, + it speeds up, you gunna need a big tin for that one...
if all else fails, i bet you can get an electric starter to fit in place
keep up the good work chaps
