    • @ShadowriverUB
      @ShadowriverUB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And how they gonna do that? You gonna introduce yet another tax which will burden smaller companies even more? It a lot easier to deal with segregated materials then deal it on individual manufacture level.

    • @Ryukachoo
      @Ryukachoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A progressive tax based on volume of batteries sold which feeds into recycling company tax breaks could work, it's kinda roundabout but still workable.
      Smaller companies wouldn't feel it but very large companies could take the hit and factor it into pricing

    Came here from the cell phone video. Could you please do another video on this? And consumer e waste in general? Things must have changed in the last 4 years, but I am worried there is just that much more being thrown away. One factor you could look into is the losing of all of this e waste along with less offices being occupied and so many more people working from home. A close friend is currently clearing an 11 story building of offices and the waste is beyond comprehension. Everything from brand new in the box electronics to several year old desks and chairs are being thrown away in mass. I have seen that on small scale for businesses, but never that scale.

You are even handed and do thorough research and you neither praised nor trashed tesla; you just presented your findings and raised your concerns, then enumerated the likely positive, useful outcomes for the next phases of battery recycling and environmentally friendly possibilities. Thank you!

  • @GunarsRodins
    @GunarsRodins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually i believe that those standardized form-factor batteries are easy to dismantle and separate. Reversed process or bullet manufacturing. A) Cut both heads (sizes are standardized) B) push piston and wet + roll of lithium film will be pushed out. C: Put 2 needles and roll out the film D: then pass with precise gravity powered calibrated load one side of film over
    grater to remove powder E: turn arround film and do it again (probably assisting with ultrasonic). E: Liquid (electrolyte) must be collected and chemically separated in high purity components F: wet powder is to dry off and recycle - make again fine grain powder with proper size nanostructure for next batteries.
    I see more problems with already burnt batteries, or pouch batteries that got moisture inside (puffed).

    In France, we have a "polluter-payer" law, which basically means that if a store sells light bulbs, batteries, electronics, appliances, they have to implement a solution to recycle them as well. That means that any customer or not can just drop its light bulbs at the store that will take care of it afterwards. I guess we could extend this to a lot more products like food that is not good to eat so they can compost it or sell it to farmers for animals

As I write this there are 1.5 million Kilometer batteries for cars. so the life has been extended to about 30 years and they are constantly trying to extend even that. That being said there is still a lot of money in recycling the batteries and that demand will only grow.

    In The Netherlands it is also normal to not throw batteries/electronic devices in the trash. All grocery stores have boxes where you can leave your old batteries in, and old electronics can be returned to companies that sell electronics. I assumed this was similar for the rest of the world, but I am wrong apparently.

    We already use many biological solutions to many problems. I would be so bold to say that it is maybe our most advanced technology.
    Different micro organisms and their macromolecules are microscopic machines that can perform different Work and solve different problems. They are wonderful :)

      @@varshard0 strains used for production or whatever are specialised for that, and said strains would have no chance of competing outside of the comfy environment that is optimized for them. Our crude modifications would have to compete with organism perfectly tuned to nature through billions of years of evolution. In Nature there is not any, and i mean any room for waste of energy. There Will basicly be a selection pressure against having genes that are not useful in Nature or is wasteful of energy/ressources.
      Besides that, if we need to - we can, and in some cases already do make them die automatically outside the intended environment :)

    During the consumption of Goal, useful products are received such as heat and Co2 which can be used for further growing of energy and food crops. Coal is a finite resource but there are so many steps in it's consumption we should be using, first we have to de-vilify Co2 and start using it and producing it with purpose.

    I'm almost hooked on these videos, really interesting stuff and never biased which is quite rare these days, nice one.
    The governments all over the World definitely need to encourage education about the recycling of these materials everywhere like in schools and so on, it'll benefit everyone and the Planet for the future. It's great that big steps are being planned and done though, even in the mining process like Volvo using Hydrogen fuel cell diggers and earth movers.
    Can you do a video on hydrogen fuel cells please, I'd love to see an unbiased video about the advances and potential futures of it.

    Part 3 : Ultra capacitors and its evolution into the battery!

    • @JasonPrice1
      @JasonPrice1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And capacitors charge insanely fast. So if they can be made with similar energy densities to current batteries, it is a massive win as they have FAR more duty cycles and are infinitely more recyclable. If the elusive graphene ultracapacitor can be achieved in scale, then everything changes. To the extent of almost fusion power level changes.

    • @neutronpcxt372
      @neutronpcxt372 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonPrice1 There are only 2 problem with supercaps, even if energy density is solved:
      1. Their self-discharge rates are quite high.
      2. Their voltage goes down significantly as you discharge, unlike rechargeable battery chemistries which go down slowly in voltage.

      Supercapacitors are not a replacement for batteries. They fill a different niche. Batteries are for when you want kilowatt-hours. Supercapacitors are for when you want megawatt-seconds.
      If you want backup power to run a building for a day when the power goes out, you want a heap of batteries.
      If you want to cushion your grid connection against startup power surges when you restart your factory, you want a heap of supercapacitors.

    • @neutronpcxt372
      @neutronpcxt372 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, especially this.
      Supercaps have very low energy density, but extremely high power density.
      Even if their energy density doesn't improve much in the mid-term, their characteristics could be used to stabilize grids all around the world, especially with the rise of electric cars.

    The environmental imact of lithium extraction/mining includes the people who are losing their way of life in forfeiting their land to their governments, so the industry can prevail. The governments reap the payoff of the industry while there are people who are forced to give up their life as they know it and move to the urban areas. This is good business. You have to be a consumer, living in a city.
