I am a South African, I was ten years old when the 1995 world cup came to our country. And what Madiba did for our country is far greater than was depicted in Invictus and Invictus did a great job of portraying what happened that world cup. But being there and living it was amazing! And yes, the stadium shook with that flyby, but not nearly as much as it shook when Joel put that drop kick through and when that final whistle blew and we became world champions! I can tell you it was the whole country that shook! It was amazing!

I was three and we left when I was seven. So jealous that you got to have that memory. My mum always gets teary, even when she watches the trailer for invictus. She said it was such an amazing and hopeful experience for the whole country. Wish I could have been a little older then so that I could appreciate it... then again, maybe I dont haha!
The proudest moment of my working life was watching this take place when my signature (well stamp actually) was on the btx sheets for this flight. Though I didn't release the plane, I did do my parts of the btx and later ltx on this plane. It landed, we pulled the stickers off threw pax in it and it departed for overseas.
RIP Laurie Kay. If only men all over the world would love and respect each other! Mandela is a great example ... the soul has no color and God is one ... for all of us.

I remember Nelson turning up in the Sprinbok kit, I remember "HEY, JONAH!" I remember Gareth Edwards talking in the pre match build up and the jet flying over and drowning out his voice, I remember Joost Van De Westheausan leaping into the air at the final whistle, I remember the players kneeling in a circle after the game 15 yrs ago.
South Africa.... The only country to have thrown the entire support of its people (black and white, old and young, women and men) behind the Springboks! RIP Capt. Laurie Kay, a true legend and a national heritage treasure!

I was at Ellis park on 5 October 2013 when there was another flyover (I saw the plane 3 times but it could have been more)...at the Rugby championships between the Springboks and All blacks....it was awesome to hear the jet, watch it...one of the best moments of my life.
Thank you for posting this, i've been looking for it everywhere! This has been done many times since, including here in Australia before a socceroo match in 2005, however they don't have the impact like this one in South Africa, from memory it was the first time a commercial airliner was used for a flyover. If you find more video of it please post it.

Little bit late, but for what it is worth. The Puma helicopter flyover was a heli short. Reason being that the fly boys dropped one of the flags below the heli on a car next to Southgate Shopping Centre. I kid you not. We were behind the blue Toyota Corolla when the Flag , with Weight landed on her engine bay. They landed next to the lady and apologised, but never made the flyover. Defense dept will probably deny, but hey, we won won the world Cup, so who really cares! Just for interest.

These events are seen as the top 5 biggest sporting events on our planet, with the Fifa World Cup being seen as the biggest. There are others like the winter olympics and the British and US opens (golf). As for the Superbowl. Dude, no one plays, watches or understands this sport outside the US for it to even be considered a worldwide event.
"Invictus" was my favorite movie of 2009, and this was my favorite moment in it--I haven't had such a thrill since the bikes got airborne in "E.T.!" (P.S. Read "Playing the Enemy" to learn how meticulously the pilot prepared for this .)
@GREABO06 Actually SAA FLY OVERS have become an institution for major events in SA. SAA are known for their fly overs & flying formations until today still do such during national events like Presidential Inaugurations, during the last Presidential Inauguration SAA did a formation fly over using Airbus A340's. SAA Fly Overs and Formations are flown by ex-SAAF (South African Air Force) Pilots who are current SAA Pilots. It is a also a tradition in SA to raise a glass and drink during a flyover.

@Kevtb87 Captain Kay (commander) was a guest speaker at a number of our flying school's wings parades. They practiced this in the sim at (OR Tambo) for hours. Captain Kay was ex-RAF, so these guys are professionals. The chances of something going wrong was almost zero and they had a number of alternatives & emergency procedures. If not, CAA would not have cleared them for this. This started a entire formation flying culture at SAA. See SAA Formation Flying.

Yes that was great but the fact that all nationals support a national team is far from unusual....so RSA is not the only country to do this.

This is real - I was 15 when I watched the game and I very clearly remember the flyover. Not great rugby, but the most beautiful match ever played.
