    I live in Argentina. If it wasn't for 3d printing, we at my local game store simply wouldn't be able to play the game (we used to play Heroclix, and had to drop it because prices went through the roof too). I have an FDM printer, and two other guys have resin printers. We all make models and terrain for the game and have a blast. I will always support 3d printing

    GW ignores Brazil so yes i will 3d print what i can so i can play their game, and Yes Brazil has an enourms community of wargamers and miniature painters, and yet GW just choose to ignore us, so without 3d printers i would never be able to play warhammer and others games

      You absolutely should be 3D printing and other methods of making your own minis! It seems like GW doesn't care about anyone in Central and South American countries. It's already extremely cost prohibitive to play in countries they do sell to and it didn't used to be this way.

    The frustrating thing about the "Official models only" argument is that, if we're being honest, GW doesn't have the stock available to support their fanbase.
    There are SO many examples of kits that you just cannot get, not because they are discontinued, but because GW cannot keep up with demand for them. My personal example of this is the War Dogs from the Chaos Knights line; they are brilliant kits and at $100 CAD each I would buy 4 boxes without a second thought because they're cool models, fun kits, and are very useful in-game. Only problem is you literally cannot find them anywhere. I managed to order 1 box that was in an LGS on the literal other side of the country from me and until they arrived I thought I'd been scammed. These have been "Temporarily Out of Stock" from GW direct for MONTHS and this is not the first time since they launched it that they are out of stock for months at a time.
    This is to say, I have no issue spending my money with GW, but they make 3D printing a better option because of convenience and getting the models you actually want on the board, and when it's literally more convenient AND cheaper than the official way, then I (and most others) are going to just do that instead of waiting around to spend several times more for the same outcome.

    • @michaelgalloway1359
      @michaelgalloway1359 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude I remember when the Kasrkin first re-released after like 20 years and they went out of stock IMMDEDIATELY it was insane and werent available for literally months. GW tries to hold a vice grip on the game as a whole and as much as we love the IP and the universe its not worth the astronomical prices they want for their models when 3D printing exists and allows us to basically play the game with stand in models that do the same thing and dont drain our bank accounts.

    • @DeviantEdspear
      @DeviantEdspear ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm reminded of the argument that made Steam a thing back in the day. The best way to combat piracy is to offer a better/more convenient service.
      If GW doesn't want people 3d printing things... maybe they should make it more convenient/cheaper to buy their stuff.
      Or I dunno ... maybe they can sell their own stls.
      Pricing is hardly my only issue with the company.

    • @michaelgalloway1359
      @michaelgalloway1359 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DeviantEdspear well it isn't just pricing as you said, it's also the fact that their quality control and actual availability is a major part of the issue. I've had pieces come in from the new Imperial guard kits that have had unseemly mold lines. Thankfully not on my Lord Solar or characters but a lot on the infantry units. It's just the fact that they force scarcity and don't have the stock often to actually supply the needs of their consumers. Price I do think is an issue to a degree as well because the amount of money they want for ten infantry or hell in my personal experience a Rogal Dorn tank is $100 thankfully I got mine before the price hike but it still doesn't make it any less egregious and that goes for all factions of the game too that have outrageously priced/scarce models. To your end with Valve they just simply undercut the competition and have great practices which GW doesn't. If GW had more sales more often people would flock to buy their stuff.

    Since I've started the hobby in 3rd edition, there has always been a class difference in army composition. I remember every Christmas and every birthday asking for warhammer kits. And I was barely able to put together a 2000 point list. And after I was able to, my army was outclassed heavily by other players with more of a disposable income than me. Now with warhammer as a hobby from when I was growing up, I'm revisiting the hobby with more resources and an appreciation for the creative side. I wish I had the tools that 3d printing has provided when I was younger. The technology wasn't there. Having had a 3d printing set up for almost 4 years now, I've had a great appreciation for the creative people in our hobby. I definitely recommend it for anyone remotely interested in getting one, it will pay for itself within the first 1000 ml bottle of resin, every time.

    YES!!! So happy Sam is starting to do Combat Patrol boxes! He even managed to print those cheaper than mine which came out to about $57 USD. Please keep doing more Combat Patrol boxes! Having a lot of different ones means that it's a lot easier to sit down with friends who are interested and introduce them to the game while giving them an opportunity to try out different armies. The cost to enter is just insane in this hobby, so having more people with multiple small armies is only ever going to be a good thing

    i looked at the price of armies and was stunned at how high they were. all my friends eventually got into it when I showed some interest and so i went the "proxy" route (they didnt care infact they thought cool)and bought a 3D printer and i already wanted one to print dnd minis so the 40k stuff was a bonus, come to find out no shop(non gw) in my area allows proxies at all. after i printed my entire army.... i was heart broken because i felt gate kept. luckily my friends all pitched in to get me a combat patrol and some other kits to start collecting and I've found that there's money savings if you buy used. but what i think I'm gonna do is only print resin gw kits, if its not made in plastic and isn't available to buy in the same amount it would take to print I'm printing it!

      Non GW shops not allowing it is ridiculous.I don't play 40k but saw a single 32mm (or whatever) officer guy for sale at the locals game shop for $53 AUD.
      That is just ridiculous. WOTC pricing for single miniatures (the newer kits) is also absurd.
      But really people should be moving on from GW at this point with their money grubbing schemes. More people should play one page rules or whatever. The game part of GW is questionable quality at best, their universe is cool as well as their minis but those are not "the game".

    Artists working for GW aren't paid by sales. By the time GW sells these minies, artists have their money already. No need to cry for Corpo, Samurai. I say go for 3D printing if you want. It is cheaper, not cheap. You require some skill on your side and you supports small creators. I must say i am always glad to see not copy-pasted GW models, but some smaller or bigger differences. 3D printing is a game changer for me. Because the guy I used to work for did not have worker's compensation insurance like the law requires I went from making $250 an hour to what passes for social security after surviving a catastrophic work injury. GW is priced well beyond my means and that was before I started helping to take care of an elderly family member. As far as the IP goes, GW does not care one bit about the players only their money. While in some cases 3D printing may well go past the line with some content out there but where GW's IP is concerned I am perfectly fine with it. They will not get my money ever again, even if I was to find myself a billionaire, until sweeping changes are enacted with safeguards.
    There is absolutely no chatter about fantasy figures or historic war games. Nobody complains about IP infringements when "Bob" releases an army set of WW II Marine miniatures or Loot Studios has a couple of Orks in the monthly bundle. I just bought an ENTIRE Egyptian themed skeletal army set of STLs for $42 US. This thing was MASSIVE. Best of all, there is not a single person on the planet who could make a rationally coherent claim of an IP violation (There will always be a Buttermilk Bob out there).
    3D printing IS the wave of the future and companies need to start catering to us instead of standing in our way. We vote with our pocket books and executives need to listen. People like me will not buy overpriced plastic by companies with stupid expensive rulesets but make reasonably priced STLs available with good rule sets and we can talk.

    Your paint jobs always look great. Not sure why you put it down.
    3D printing has allowed me a great entry into the hobby. I don't own a printer, but I buy stuff from people who have the license to sell 3D prints.
    I think 3D printing offers more variety than what is put out by GW. Or, gives people the chance to buy some similar minis of models that are no longer in production.
    I have some proxy Space Marine bits that are great. And recently, started buying true scale Grey Knight miniatures. Do I feel bad that the money I'm using for those miniatures is not going to GW? Not at all.
    On the topic of out of production models, would a video series where you print armies of old Imperial Guard regiments sound like something you'd do?

  • @sheds
    @sheds ปีที่แล้ว

    I played for about 5 years and had 3 armies. I had orks, marines, and a separate black templar army, all over 2k points and mostly painted. I wound up selling them all for like $2k (the orks were expensive) and I don't want to think about what I paid for all of them. I got out because prices were too high, and my local scene turned unfriendly and not fun. I always enjoyed the lore, but the prices were prohibitive and ultimately made the hobby not fun because it made me unable to play the lists I wanted to. I remember saying that I'd try again when I could print my own models. 10+ years later and a degree in Digital Art and a new 3D printer, I'm on my way to playing again. I went to look at the prices out of curiosity and literally laughed out loud when I saw how extreme the prices are. The single unit prices are absurd and they cannot justify them in any way to me.
    I have no qualms about printing models that are similar, especially if I model them myself. They don't do themselves any favors by guarding their IP so hard either. Things like not allowing audiobooks of most of their novels, knocking down content creators, and then allowing too many video games with extremely poor quality to be produced keeps their exposure low to potential new players like me that got into it from a book I bought based on the cover.
    3D printing is already in a place where it's the obvious way into the hobby, and definitely going to be used at least to augment models, produce single bits you broke or lost, and for many of us, print whole armies. If your local shops don't allow proxies, get a group together and play at someone's house, or find a church or community building that allows you to use them for free on weekends and play there. The local shops will have to adapt, and should. It's never good business to deny customers because you think them not buying a few box sets due to a 3D printer is unfair, it's just costing them in the long run where they could benefit from increased sales in everything around the models themselves, as well as snacks and so on. So no, don't feel bad about it, it isn't theft, especially if someone else modeled the thing you are printing and you paid them, or they gave it to you free.

    I find myself on the fence, as while I can afford GW models and have bought numerous, building a horde army like a Krieg army gets rather expensive rather quickly. I actually picked up the same STLs and have loved everything I've printed with them so far.
    Theres no reason other than lack of competition for GW to be charging what they do, so I'm hoping the influx of 3D printed armies begins to make them second guess their rules and prices about it, because if people were able to cheaply try the game, the player base would grow exponentially.

    I buy GW models and 3D Print. I get the argument GW is expensive, because it is... But buying a box from them, the tools/glue you need from amazon, is considerably cheaper and easier than buying a 3D printer, learning how to use it, having the space for it, handling resin, crying over failed prints, disposing of resin, finding and paying for good models to download, learning to add supports if you need to etc etc.
    I'd argue it's a time and accessibility thing over a money thing for most people.

    GW really should sell their own printable models. They could still charge a premium. They could hook people into a subscription for exclusive content / discounts / previews. Or make something like Hero Forge. Or sell their own 3d print services. Or sell loot boxes with random models, a bit like Lego figures. There are lots of options to raise money and they could tie them into their in-store experience too to sell paints, books, scenery etc. Or they could be dicks and watch money slip through their fingers to creators meeting a demand they won't fill

    After how many prints (let's say 30mm mini's) do you have to change the FEP film and when is a resin printer LCD screen just done fore it? Doesn't this factor also needs to calculate in? Just curious because I like a cheaper way to get into the hobby.

    I guess the only downside to 3D printing 'similar' models to the original IP is, you can't play in GW stores or even with other folks that have only bought their models from GW ( because some of those folks won't play with you). I think 3D printing for ones hobby is here to stay and more and more folks will accept playing with 3D models. Obviously GW should release stl files.

    I mean your right, there are tons of small creators that do a better flavorful job I think. Edge Miniatures and their Dark Space Elf line is.. more Dark Eldar than Druhkari.

    Thanks for the video.
    Some thoughts:
    I think this is a proper response to market forces, and is not an anti-capitalist strategy; on the contrary, this is capitalism working as intended.
    Companies do one of two things; either they pivot, or die. No market stays stagnant, demands will always fluctuate and if GW feels some losses because of printing, they'll adjust their business practices or become the next Atari or Kodak (also leaders in their respective markets.)
    GW (the publicly traded company) doesn't care if you *play* their *game*, they care if you *buy* their *products*.
    Remember how the music industry complained that Napster would be their ruination? One could argue that as technology developed, TH-cam, Spotify, Soundcloud, etc has helped aspiring artists to break into the market. If anyone lost out it was probably agents and distributors. There's way more music being published online today than people had access to in 1998.
    A marketer's job is to convince me to purchase your product. If I'm choosing an alternative, you've *failed*. If you didn't achieve the results you want, *do better*.
    I'm not on this planet to be a corporation's statistic, their consumer.

    I print by my self, because i don't like to play anymore, because the community where i live is toxic, only Powergaming...
    I only want to paint some Minis and have cool looking models for my Display cabinet. Thats why i love loot studios and opr.
    Some of the models which i love, or for a skirmisher or bordgame i like to buy.

    I can safely say that I wouldn’t be playing 40K and wouldn’t have spent nearly as much on models and paints had I not also had the ability to paint. GW actually owes the sale of a leviathan box and Soul Forge box to the fact I can print as well . Otherwise I wouldn’t have bought them at all.

    The way I feel about it is the same way I feel about piracy, if you make it cheap and easy to consume your product then I will. If you make it expensive or exclusive and hard to find then, yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me! Just like I’m not gonna pay for 20 different streaming services to watch one particular show on each one, I’m not gonna pay 150 dollars for few or even one toy soldier. Especially since I am just in it for the painting building cool stuff and don’t play the actual game. After spending way too much on models when I first got into Warhammer and then leaving for years for cheaper games like gaslands. I only got back into warhammer now after getting my 3D printer. I have an entire printed tyranids army I would have never gotten if it wasn’t for being able to print my own for next to nothing.
    And it not like GW couldn’t get in on this. They use 3D modeling to make they’re products in the first place, even some of the minis they use in promotion pictures and 3D prints so they can get them painted up before the production line in complete. If they just sold those files everyone would buy them. And plenty of people would still buy the plastic minis too because not everyone wants or can 3D print themselves. Some prefer plastic, or don’t want to deal with the hassle or health risk of resin. It’s a win win for them but they’re too tunnel blind to see.

    For me, whether printing something is moral (for say, a Games workshop army/models) is dependant on whether its a "true proxy" or "rip off proxy". True proxies are 3D printable models that while were pretty clearly built to be proxied for Warhammer and other armies in their place, are still very obviously their own original designs and cratvity. Say the Redmakers solar guard, pretty clearly an imperial guard proxy with plenty of stand ins, but entirely its own style and isn't part of the IP. Trying to argue them would essentially be trying to say that GW has control on entire broad concepts like "army men" or "power armor knights" which is obviously stupid. Rip off proxiews of course are just people trying to get a quick buck from selling something which is obviously the IP and I feel is pretty justified to be targetted and taken down. The only real moral argument I could see is that GW doesn't sell 3D printing STLs as a service, although that still doesn't change the fact of benefitting from an IP without GW (whether you like them or not) getting their profit. And of course if GW ever did sell STLs (I doubt it but hey, nothings impossible), then obviously that would be all the more reason that making rip off proxies would be immoral.
