Sometimes a musician who isn't making music will suffer emotionally because there's a deep down desire to do it but because they are not taking that time it will make them depressed or easily angered. Sitting down with your instrument to practice or create is often a stress relief. Also, sometimes I'll be searching for music to listen to but nothing I turn to is satisfying. The reason is, my desire in that moment to feast on something new is really my internal desire to MAKE something new. Thanks, Bill! Great video series! Can't wait for the next one, Brother!

I totally get the point about priorities. So many people say to me "I wish I could play guitar" or "I've always wanted to learn guitar" and I ask them if they have a guitar and so often the response is a sheepish "no". I respond "Well if you REALLY want to learn guitar, I suggest the first step is to get a guitar", to me that's a no brainer.

If I could add a tip # 6... don't be a perfectionist ! I've been a perfectionist for most of my life which had it's benefits but also limited my output. 2 weeks ago I posted a TH-cam video for a music track I was working on which was basically just an experiment in composing in reverse. The short story is that this little music/video experiment exploded... I was flooded with comments, likes and new subscribers. The bottom line is that this track was simply an experiment that turned out well. Therefore tip # 6... done is better than perfect. Stop perfecting and over-analyzing everything and you'll turn out more music, more often and maybe even create an occasional experiment that explodes on your TH-cam channel !

Making music is the easy part. Letting it go is the hard part. No 3 is hard for me. My ambient style requires layer upon layer. "When is this track finished"...... 🤔🤔🤔Also adding a worthwhile video is taking me time. All this together means I post once every two weeks. I'm happy with that. I have a monthly rhythm I’ve been working to, for my more complex projects. I’m fortunate to be retired (for now), and I like to dive deep into complex recording and writing projects, so here’s my ongoing plan. I made a resolution to produce a 10-song CD/album every year until I croak or run out of ideas. I create one new ready-to-publish track every month for 10 months. It takes me a week to two weeks, working every day, to create a track. That gives me two weeks every month to find inspiration, study a new area of theory or maybe develop some chord progressions, AND to practice my instrument. With the 10 songs per year plan, I also get two months a year to goof off and study / practice. I’m on my 4th year into it and still going strong.

All aspiring musician should hear your advice , as a person that's done music for over forty years I can confirm what you say is true . The most important advice is the 'Bad news' segment you did , because if you can deal with that then you probably don't love music enough , to have any great expectations .

  • @BramVanhooydonck

I always spend time at the train station thinking up something and putting it down on my phone. During the weekends I always feel the urge to make some new sounds or some samples, maybe remix samples... Not all weekends I have an idea of what to do though, and not all weekends I have time to do it. But I tend to find some gaps now and then.
I'm thinking of recording more samples in my day-to-day life because I could really use more samples, but it's hard to focus on sounds you're used to ignore. Also most sounds I find cool are gone once they sounded.

I've put my first chord progression together in almost 20 years thanks to you. Had to relearn guitar from almost scratch. It took me at lesst 12 hrs of practice over 2 weeks just to be able to play a simple arpeggio I wanted to use! And that was ONLY picking technique practice, aside from other things. I could have done it in one take while jogging many ago lol. Never would have done it without this channel inspiring me to get in the practice, thank you.

I am a very selfish musician, I record for my own enjoyment almost exclusively. I have accessible music content, but I don't promote. I record fairly often, whenever I feel like or when I collaborate.
So to me it is incredibly interesting when I meet people who do want to 'sell' music, be a musician who plays out and record, and I make more music than they do. This advice is very similar to the advice I give:
don't find reasons to not make music
don't keep yourself from making music because you don't want to "sound bad"
you need to make music to get better at it and build a collection
FINISH YOUR PROJECTS! even if it is not that good
set moderate goals and be sure to actually achieve them
you vote with your time and efforts, and when people don't spend effective time with music I can't really take them seriously as a musician.

2:15 to be honest, I’d say it’s a mixture of doing things that are both important to you and doing things that are just in our habitual state. At the end of the day we’re all creatures of habit. This can be a good and bad thing depending on where we are in our life journey. We also have dreams but they can’t fly because of the habits that we have. They weigh us down like anchors. That’s not an excuse to not do music though, because if it is our lives then we should live it within that creative outlet. I myself have been lazy outside of doing my main source of income so I feel like this is a subject that’s deeply relatable. Your videos are inspiring and my actions going forward will be towards cultivating the music that I want to put out in the world.

Don’t Fear The Reaper inspired, devising a simple Phrygian example for friends. Sometimes we go there, and I dig up forgotten skills how to play that scale. Today it’s the 12 string which led the way, and then Keyscape has ancient sounds, which help retro date the offering. Some 1978 vintage drums, a large ambience, and automated faders to randomize the background loop, which goes for about 6 minutes. Then jam. Jam all the favorite sounds, recording several takes, deciding whether to splice in or start over. The production process is something that we practice, equally to performance.

I have released solo music in 2014, 2016 and 2017. Now two years has already passed with no output (except for my band's music which is a group effort).
I'm currently in a dull situation where I always have time for music but doesn't have the inspiration to make one. Each time I pick up the guitar or a keyboard, I feel like I'm just repeating myself which puts me in a depressed state. When I force myself to finish something, it would only last a few moments before it being sent to the recycle bin.
Everyday I am literally skimming the entire web for new music and have gone to the extreme possibilities ranging from Avant-garde to harsh noise but nothing seems to spark my enthusiasm. No interesting musical/artsy events happening around town either.
Now I am building myself a bowed string instrument using random found objects, and have a few other gears waiting to be delivered. Hoping these would solve my problem.
That being said, I would like to know other methods to find inspiration when you're stuck in a rut.

You're right, even if most of if it is pretty obvious to anyone half serious, but as you said yourself, no one cares either way. These days it's easier to get people to watch videos with charismatic motivational speakers like yourself than to actually listen to music. Your videos make the audience feel good about themselves by thinking they'll apply your wisdom first thing in the morning. Notice the key difference, your music is about you/author, no one cares about you. But motivational videos are about everyone in the audience, and they care about themselves hence they watch. It's the self centered society we have built.
Again, I admire your positive attitude, but the reality doesn't care.
Funny thing is in similar motivational video about making money from music today, the advice was to build a strong online presence, print and sell t-shirts, booklets, and various marketing strategies. That speaker was also positive as if delivering good news. It's a bit like smiling doctor saying you have cancer. Sorry to sound so negative, but I'm afraid it's just realistic.
To sum it up, you're supposed to spend years investing your time, money and energy into something no one cares about. You're supposed to be good in:
    - your instrument and singing (and I mean really good, like one in generation, genius good. Most fail here making the rest of the list irrelevant)
    - songwriting & lyrics (both need to sound fresh/original)
    - music recording and production (ok, you can pay others to help here)
    - video production & online/offline promotion (you could hire someone I guess)
    - set up website, online shops and be business savvy in general (or rich).
    - young, charismatic and good looking
    - and if you're in a band then the problem multiplies with each member.
This path is unsustainable road to self destruction unless you've inherited a fortune, and besides is also futile unless you're god-like talent in most of the above.
Can you imagine Cobain happily chatting with his fans to expand his online presence, while designing, printing and selling t-shirts and booklets ? He'd shoot himself well before Nevermind.
It has become an impossible game, and that's why there is barely any good music in this millennium. And again, no one cares except us nostalgic old farts.

Bill takes the "factory" approach to making music. He gets his ebow and an echo pedal and plays a few chords. BINGO! Track finished! There's nothing wrong with that, but to pretend that we should all be churning out music on a daily or weekly basis is just destructive! I'm sixty years old, and I have about sixty albums under my belt, and no-one ever had to tell me to "make time for my music" or "practice your instrument". If you ain't doing those things, are you sure you're even a musician?

Bill, are you a lefty (but play as a righty)?
Not that it matters really, but just curious.
My 13 year old daughter is left handed and is just starting to learn to play guitar. I just bought her a left handed Gretch.

Yes indeed - I am left handed and play "righty". I prefer my dominant hand to be on the fretboard, as I consider it more complex.

      Very cool!
Great videos, man, I watch them as soon as I see you’ve put them up.

right when I first started guitar it occurred to me that all "right hand" guitars were actually "left hand" guitars. Your daughter may want to try a regular guitar since, like bill said, the fret hand is the busy hand. I, being naturally right handed, have improved the left hand skill immensely from left hand fretting AND it has helped my left hand piano playing skills a ton. Inversely. if a guitar player wants a better left hand: learn boogie-woogie piano. You will develop the left hand of the gods.

jj rusy Great advice! It’s funny how, in a way, us right handed guitar players are really playing as if we’re left-handed.
Btw: Ringo Starr is a lefty, but plays his drums as a righty. David Bowie: left-handed, but played as a right-handed player.
So it seems that Bill is in good company!

I was born lefty, mom made me a righty by taking everything I picked up out of my left hand and put it in my right. My left hand on the fretboard instantly had lots of dexterity when I first started playing guitar.

one thing I recommend is to NOT!!!!! buy to MANY synths, samples, and plugins, you'll find yourself going through stuff and designing stuff and not actually creating music. Kinda happened to me. Limit your synths, samples and plugins. VERY IMPORTANT.

Completely agree with this. I've fallen foul of this for so long. Suddenly I'm 62 and mostly make guitar music now and only occasionally use keyboards

Informative content, but background music is making me nauseous. Not trying to be insulting, but the background sounds are repetitive and without structure, much like the movement of waves while sitting on a boat. (Seasick)

That's because it is ambient guitar music. That's what I do here. I hope you will stick around for the rest of the series to learn how an old fart (me) has gained a sizable audience for his nauseating music. If I can do it - anyone can! I promise - I will keep the level of the music a little lower on part 3. 😜
