    Sobering Thoughts:
    1. No One Cares About Your Music.
2.Your Music Has No (Intrinsic) Value.
3.Your Music Isn't As Good As You Think It Is.
4.It's Really Hard to Get People's Attention.
    Encouraging Thoughts:
1.Artistic Creation is a Value Proposition. Bill's gonna help us create that value proposition in upcoming episodes.
2.Don't Stop Creating. You Can't Say You "Tried" If You Ever Gave Up.
    Bonus Thoughts:

Great video, I just released an EP and pushing it with little to no money has been difficult but it’s humbling. No one cares is something that I’ve grown to accept and actually feed off. Having no one waiting or even wanting your next release really frees you. I can go anywhere musically because there’s no expectations. I actually embrace it. If I was suddenly popular I wouldn’t even know what to do with that. Being an outlier is lawless and more fun to me. That said , a few fans wouldn’t suck.

Just a quick update: By now, some people have reacted rather positively to the music. Only two, but that's two complete strangers who actually found some value in something I really love doing, which really is an empowering thought. Even if that hadn't been the case, I would have continued to play, record and maybe even release music. Playing instruments and fiddling with pedals is just to much fun to stop doing it :)

Thank you, Bill. That's some great advice. Sometimes you have to come to grips with the reality of the situation before you can accomplish something positive. When I did my first (and only) album, it was therapeutic. But it was really only for my friends, family and myself. Perhaps that's still true, but I'll be interested in where this series goes and decide how to apply it to my music moving forward.

Been wanting to make a vid on this exact topic, too, Bill. I spent 15 years playing and touring in bands and never developed much attention. I started a channel about two years ago, teaching people what I know about lofi/indie rock music production, and as an unintended consequence, I’ve had the most interest in my music in the past two years than in those other 15! The biggest difference: I’m now providing people with actual value. It’s a harsh and sobering truth but you are 100% right: our music doesn’t have any inherent value. But there’s an immense amount of value in teaching others how to make their own music and there’s a good chance they’ll become a fan, collaborator, and/or friend in the process. Get yourself out there, show people your work, and most importantly teach people what you know how to do. Cheers, Bill 🤓

Couldn’t agree more. Coming to terms with idea that it doesn’t matter beyond what your music does for you is a big step, but ultimately very liberating when you get there. It’s something I continue to work on. It’s nice to get feedback, whether positive or negative, but it’s not the fuel that drives my creativity.

    Most music isn't very good.
It's a rare element just like gold, silver, or diamonds. It takes many different forms of colossal energy to form it be it cosmic or spiritual and it's usually indefinable.
That's only the beginning. A lifelong commitment and endless work must follow. Even then there's no guarantee. And it sure as hell isn't fair when someone like Buddy Holly who was exploding with talent has to die while some flash in the pan manufactured talent can turn one annoying short lived hit into a lifelong lucrative career.
It's simply one of the toughest nuts to crack.
But for me, it's like being in the mafia. Once you're in, there's no getting out so I refuse to give up and as I move forward, I hope to attract the magical forces and elements to bless my efforts somehow.
Feel free to check some of my recordings and demos on my channel at Jack Sutherland.

Ludwig Kopp You’re right: at the end of the day, people like your reviews not your music. Aimee Nolte wonders why no one buys her new album. She’s got millions of followers but we love her teaching not her music. Having a good teacher is still rare and expensive. She does it for free, she’s a good teacher and a beautiful person. But still, thousand of followers don’t care about her music. Sad but true.
It was still possible a couple of years ago. I’d say when myspace was still on top. People would really listen to your music. Now promoting=spaming. It’s over. We just give our monthly 10€ to spotify and that’s it. I will give an ear to your quirky stuff. Maybe?

For anyone hoping to have any kind of success in music, art, etc... this is some of the best advice you're ever going to get. Watch this video 2, 3 or more times until it sinks in. Yes, the reality is harsh but it's the reality of the music biz and understanding that will leave you better equipped to get some traction. It's not easy... it's a long, slow, multi-year process but the good news is that it's very doable ! I've built a large loyal fan base in the art world doing exactly what Bill talks about in this video. As I said, it's a harsh reality but that is why so few succeed. Talent is only a small part of making it in music, marketing yourself(building your tribe) is equally or maybe more important than raw talent !

Indeed Marti, marketing and 'branding' yourself is as important these days as anything. A storyline that dovetails into the music. Also, in rock these days, it is getting tougher because of censorship...the artist that can boomerang this back onto the establishments penchant for banning all things that don't fit the status quo they concieve will win (as I hint around to my brand).

I just love these truth bombs because they make me smile on the inside knowing that the gut feeling I carried inside all this time is coming to be true but that's ok too. It is hard to learn to like new stuff and i even cringe at some people's music. Another problem is that in today's society we became too closed minded and closed in general as compared to just what it was like a few years ago not to mention few decades ago. The idea of free music downloads and MP3's finger surfing for best stuff made us uncaring and indifferent.

    A little anecdote:
When I was young, I met an elderly well-known poet. I was a beginner writer then, and he did actually read my short stories, which in itself was like an accolade. ;) I asked him whether he would advise me to continue. He told me directly and mercilessly: "Forget it. You are completely untalented, and you will never master the craft of a writer".
Only years later did I learn from this poet, may he rest in peace, that this was his standard answer for all novice writers. "Anyone who asks whether his writing makes sense either wants to make a fast career as a writer - or he means it damn serious. In the first case, he is prone to give up after my answer anyway, and to do other crap. In the second case, he will go to work with double the zeal ."
I was the second case :)
Which is to be said in the sense of "never stop creating!". Thank you, William.
    Greetings from, well, Germany…
