    +1 for the point that you have to follow through on your creation content for "a long time." It takes people time to discover you. It's impossible to do this kind of thing for two months and expect a "full house" of subscribers. I didn't stumble upon Bill's channel here until sometime in the last nine months or so... probably due to TH-cam's suggest-bot realizing that Bill's style is in line with other videos I've watched. However I got here, point being (as Bill pointed out) he's been doing this channel for 5.5 years now. Now I'm subscribed (and I don't subscribe often) and here for the long haul. Case in point.

      Agreed - the long perspective is the best. Also, would you still create your kind of art even if no one cared? I know I would (because I did!).

    very practical well thought out advice! Obviously coming from experience! Bill's advice shows his deep understanding of one of the fundamental attributes of the universe: it acts like a mirror. If you give, so will the universe. If you take, so will the universe. So my attitude is don't worry about getting and just worry about giving. Thanks so much for sharing!!! Love your music!

    I bought a Wintergaten tee-shirt a couple of weeks back, not because I was “supporting the channel” but because I liked the channel and it was a nice tee-shirt. Ideally, financial support should be organic to the relationship between the audience and the creator rather than a specific solicited event. But where Amanda Palmer is right is that the creator does need provide the channel for that relationship ... at some point you do have to “ask”.

    I'm late to this party but great content, Bill. You've got a great sound and I love what you're doing and genuinely interested in how you record and create these videos. You have no mic in front of you nor is one clipped to your t-shirt, yet you've got a full tone. Sounds great. Generally, how do you go about recording your guitar and voice at the same time with equal clarity? It's all top notch. IDEA for a video and maybe you've already thought about doing this ...how a about a tour of your studio or a rig rundown? I searched your channel-content and aside from presenting techniques and sharing gear settings, etc., on all sorts of things (thank you!), however, I could not find a vid on how you create your TH-cam content (computer, pre/post tools, video overlays and graphics, audio mixing, mic's, camera's, lighting, behind-the-scenes equipment). You really produce high-quality production. Seems better than most. Thanks Bill. If any other viewers are familiar with Bill's setup, please post. Thanks all.

    Bill, as always great ideas in this video. My experience is that it IS actually more blessed to give than to receive. Even when nothing material is given back to me, I still feel like I'm the one who benefits most when I give. People that I've taught to play guitar for free, even given guitars and pedals to...I've gotten more back every time. A couple of these people have actually become fine musicians creating thier own art! How satisfying is that?! That is the true reward.
    I also agree about the online "friendships" you mention here. I've been posting videos of guitar improvs for like 10 years and actually have a few friends around the globe that like what I post. When I started posting I never thought that would happen. I've met some musical kindred spirits. How often in every day life does that happen? It sounds cheesy, but to me these non-material things; friends, the satisfaction of seeing students achieve and excel...these are the real rewards, not getting money in return. The system has is so blinded with the desire for money that we've lost sight of the things that are truly important.

    I watch your channel since... 6k subs I think. But somehow this series of videos about promoting your music got me more and more.. little bit depressed may be? but that's what it is. And with this one, I finally realized that I am absolutely *not* the person who can create this additional content, give some valuable information, make interesting videos, etc. It's almost impossible for me to communicate with people on that level, because of personal things..
    Well, maybe it is sounds disappointing. But then I have to think another way. There should be a path, maybe I just don't know it yet.. So I would like to say Thank You so much for this video, it really helped, just not as expected, I think :)

      I can totally relate to you man. I have no time or energy for all of this, I hate online social networking. I'm fed up with wasting my time on the likes of Twitter liking and commenting on posts to engage with people. I'm starting to wonder if I should focus on getting into music sync/licensing. At least with that I wouldn't have to worry about promotion, just make music and send it to sync/licensing companies. Only thing is that means giving up the dream of being "discovered", if that even happens anymore (even by someone who might want to use my music in a film or something). If I give up social networking I might also try the old fashioned route of sending out demo tapes. Would be interested if you or anyone else has thoughts on these ideas.

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well... I thought about it a lot..
      I know things that are definitely not worth doing.. there are so-called internet "labels" that simply post your music on their channels, playlists, etc. and get from this views and promotion for themselves.
      But artists don't get any benefit from it at all. They don’t even try to promote the artist somehow, often they don't even post a link to the author. They just make money from someone else's music. So it’s definitely not worth getting involved with.
      And stock music services - you can forget about them. They have millions of uploads, and only a few people really get something..
      There must be some good labels, but it's probably not so easy to get their attention. And, I don't know whether it is worth it, in this age of the internet, and how to do it right..

    • @Pharmacymusic1
      @Pharmacymusic1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SkinnyVampiress I agree with all of your comments again. I read somewhere that if you consistently make music that stands out and share it on social media it will eventually find an audience. Not sure if this is true, but I think the answer for me is to stop thinking or even caring about promotion...but just keep making music and enjoying it...and keep sharing it without caring as much about engaging and all of that. I mean, I'm happy to say thanks or have a conversation with anyone who comments on my music, but that's about all I have time for...except maybe sharing some good music or topics I discover online now and again. Now and again I might send something to a label or a sync/licensing company, but not have any big expectations about this...it's kind of like buying a lottery ticket...there is a chance but don't waste much time or get your hopes up too much. I'll also add links to buy on Soundcloud and release albums myself on Bandcamp. Sure, I might never sell anything, but if my music gets better and better and I just throw it out there with minimal promotional effort, and enjoy making it...nothing to lose, and who knows. Another thing...I recently got a comment on Twitter from a follower who said that one of my tracks helped him get through some rough times with family at home and with illness. I'd been doing zero promotion but this suddenly made it seem worthwhile and made me realize you never know who's actually listening and getting a lot from your music. So if I keep enjoying making music...even if I only get the odd like or comment now and again, it's better than it never being heard at all. So while I like Bill's channel, I think it's wrong to say that no one cares abut your music.

    • @SkinnyVampiress
      @SkinnyVampiress 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      About a year ago, it was still possible to gain some subscribers just by making good music... I got 1k subscribers like that. now it’s almost impossible, a video with a small number of views simply doesn’t show to anyone, now you need to promote yourself everywhere and so on.. Now all social networks and media platforms are made of advertising, you either advertise a product, or you don’t get anything. Look at all the music channels - they mostly advertise products (effect pedals, synths, etc.) and now nobody cares about music..
      But you are right, you need to make more music and think less about other things. The world is changing, the possibilities are changing.. with truly good music you can certainly find your audience, maybe now is just not the best time or something...

    I'm wondering if anyone has had success building an audience with content OTHER THAN videos. I've tried making some videos, but I don't have the time, equipment, talent, or interest to do it right, and it shows. I have written some articles that get a fair amount of traffic, but it doesn't seem to translate into interest in my music.

    • @alandmoore4306
      @alandmoore4306 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tom McArdle It's a bit of both. I've made a lyric video or two, and an instrumental one with slides describing the recording & writing process. It wasn't hard, but they feel low-effort to me (which I guess is a tautology).

    Loving this series. Sharing it out again to fellow musicians feeling the frustration. It's fun, but it's also tough going trying to build out an audience out into the internet. What do I do next, what's the response going to be like? Do I keep the old stuff that people might come across that's not as representative of what I'm doing now? You mentioned before showing the 'growth' or the journey that you're on. But also if that's the first thing somebody comes across, will they just go "pfft! that's rubbish" and move on. The quality of content is so much higher these days than even 5 to 10 years ago. I've only fairly recently started with more consistent content, and a lot of it seems to be just keep pushing stuff out there. Over thinkers anonymous right? :)

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there is a balance. If you really can't play guitar yet, then you should probably wait to post. Also, I think some of it depends on how old you are. If I, for example, barely knew how to play my instrument as an older man, there would be less tolerance for people for listen and be interested than if I were a teen who was still learning, but obviously would be good in a couple of years. But there is room for growth for all of us, and waiting until everything is perfect might mean that you never do anything.

    • @DrWhoStrange
      @DrWhoStrange 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chordsoforion It's great how you're just upfront about it and give ideas and things that you can work on as well. Yes there is a bit of an expectation on the, ahem, slightly older of us to have all our stuff together ;) I did quite a few videos when I was on a forum about 8 years ago. Put up challenges like one week to do an Americana cover, or another to do a spoken word song. Mostly was recording using digital cameras and the like without very good sound or video. But it was great to have that connection with other people trying to improve and learn. Joining in with both your audience and your peers!

    Really interesting information, thank you. It is confusing to know how best to get your music out there, especially if you grew up playing in the pre internet age where gigs and if you were lucky a record deal would be the path.. Our music is chilled out sort of King Crimson in 1972, finding a target audience confuses me :) . xxx PS, is the music you make separate from your 'content' channel or is it all mixed together
