      @@decentgarage I'm not to sure about that because it does it all the time. It can be 85/90 degrees at night and the truck at normal running pimps an it'll do it. In the winter when you first crank it yes it will do what you are talking about but you can hear the heater coming on and off. Also the heater is a steady thing for a few minutes depending on how cold it is. What I am talking about mine and my dad's 93s and my friends 96 all do it. There is no pattern or nothing. Dosen't matter what the road is like or anything. The lights just constantly go from bright to dim and somewhere in between. It doesn't matter if they are on bright or dim and the dashboard lights do the same.

    Best Mod ever. Have done this to my 1st Gen and my 1968 Mustang. Not having the power go through the old switch and wiring and suffering the voltage drop easily makes the lights twice as bright.

    Very useful and informative, as well as essential for the 1st Gens. I wish they had these kits years ago, as I just wired in two Bosch relays along the harness just after the fusible links. Still works great to this day, and no more melted switches! I'm no electrical engineer, but I believe that just going to the LED headlights takes a significant load off the switch, even without a relay. I'm thinking that's why your lights looked to be the same brightness before and after. Running OEM lights pulls a lot of juice, and I did notice a dramatic improvement to those lights when I installed the relays. In any case, I think relays are a must for efficiency of the lights, as well as safety and longevity of the switch.

    I would like to offer a suggestion with this installation. First, I agree with your decision to install this aftermarket wiring harness. It is very simple to install and it removes a troublesome current load off your headlight switch. Before my install, I had the unfortunate experience of the switch starting to melt down on the highway at night. Not a fun experience. My suggested upgrade is with the relays that come with the harness. They are 4-pin relays which are not common, nor easy to find in the US. I had one of them burn out on me and it took a very long time with plenty of research to locate one. After this experience, I decided to employ a better and more reliable fix by cutting the 4-pin relay and socket out of the harness and replacing it with the more common 5- pin Bosch-style relay and socket. You will need to troubleshoot which wires in the harness go to which pins in the 4-pin relay and then translate that into the 5 pin relay, but it is not that difficult to do as diagrams are easy to find. One of the pins in the 5-pin socket will not be used. 5-pin relays and their socket pigtails are readily available at most auto part stores and are very inexpensive by comparison. The 4 pin relay was ~$40.00 or so and the 5 pin with a similar rating is ~$5.00. You can run with the 4-pin relay until it burns out, or avoid the anxiety and frustration of trying to find one late at night and away from home and just take the time to remove the 4-pin and swap in a 5-pin now while it is convenient. This is not a difficult task, just a bit time consuming to make sure you wire in the new socket correctly.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good thought. You can also just use a 5 pin relay and not connect anything to the 5th wire

    • @johnfelton4230
      @johnfelton4230 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@decentgarage Sorry, I guess my suggestion was a bit cloudy. The wire harness has a 4 pin relay and socket that cannot be used with a 5 pin relay. Replacing the 4 pin socket with a 5 pin socket is what I did. You are right, the 5th pin on the relay and corresponding socket will not be used. I just taped it off.

    As everybody is saying, great mod! I made my own harness years ago and can still remember the difference it made. I've often thought I should make and sell a harness. Ah well I'm lazy. Glad they came up with one.

    • @txmuddigger
      @txmuddigger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Next best thing to that is the blower motor high speed mod. I saw a write-up somewhere online on how to do it but it seems they over complicated it. I wound up using a add-on circuit from Painless that's actually for an electric engine fan. It's pretty near plug and play and makes a huge difference.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's so nice that they have a kit now. Wiring is not my forte

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Jim Lane did a writeup on that years ago. I haven't done it yet. What did you notice when you did your version of it?

    • @txmuddigger
      @txmuddigger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been so long since I've read the write up. I had it saved for a long time before even looking into it. Seems like initially he had an issue with back feeding the blower and it would stay running? Honestly I don't remember well enough to be able to make a comparison but when I moved my HVAC controls down to the radios position, I figured now's the time. I had the relay kit from Painless left over from another project and just incorporated it into it. It made it nearly plug-and-play. Mounted the relay to the bracing behind the inst cluster, the kit uses a maxi fuse (can't remember the amps) which I feel is WAY overkill and then used hi speed switch position to trigger it and used the existing hi speed wire (to resistor) connected to the 87 pin. Here in southeast Texas, a/c is a BIG deal. At that point, I'd fully been over and "hopped up" the system as good as I knew how. Only thing left was the weak blower speed to cool it down after the trucks sat all day and this did the trick. I'd say the ac in this truck is just as good as our '17 Expedition now.. just louder when on high.

    • @decentgarage
      @decentgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@txmuddigger I'm going to look in to this for sure. My ac is plenty cold but the blower speed just doesnt put out enough when it's above 85. Especially with black leather seats

      Great question Jonas. So in both my trucks the brake light is on because both do not have the parking brakes connected. In both of them I recently just removed the bulbs from those indicators until I hook up the parking brakes. For the ABS light this is very common. The best solution is the unplug the ABS module which sits behind the glove box. The module looks like an external hard drive for a computer. Just unplug it and the light should turn off. The ABS system on these trucks is laughable anyways.
