How Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart Symbolizes a Family (Analysis)

  • “Mao Mao Heroes of Pure Heart” is a show on Cartoon Network that has made a considerable impression on the cartoon community since its release in 2019. It follows a trio of different personalities as they all protect the town of Pure Heart Valley using various heroic skills.
    However, an arguably more prominent feature of the show is the way the three friends interact with each other and the way they seem to love one another like a family. And in this video, I explore exactly how this show manages to convey that familial dynamic in a distinct and effective way.

    The thing I love the most about this show is Mao Mao’s and Adorabat’s father daughter relationship and how much she looks up to her dad and how Mao Mao is basically Adorabats whole world, inspiration and role model. How how intense, encouraging, protective and loving he is towards her and how desperate he is to be a good father figure for her to not end up and failing like his own dad. Adorabat is basically a daddy’s lil girl with Mao Mao.

      The fact that there is a drastic contrast between Mao Mao’s intensity and brutality and Adorabat’s kindness and innocence, yet Mao Mao continues to still love and cherish her, shows how great of a relationship they must have with each other and how particularly special Adorabat must be to him. This is most likely because of how much Adorabat reminds him of a younger himself, so he can relate to and empathize with her journey. And I love how well this show manages to convey that!

    I feel like the flaws are what make the relationship of the characters so compelling. They’re relationship is far from perfect, but it’s evident they love and care for each other, and that they try. It feels very real in that sense, and I think that’s why it’s so compelling

    I find it very interesting that to compensate for the complete lack of support from his family and the world, (and the likely apathy of Badgerclops) Mao Mao has inflated his self confidence artificially to the point of as you said, narcissism. But that foundation is made of sand, and anything that challenges Mao Mao's fantasy for himself causes a complete break down. In this sense I find the episodic nature of Heroes of Pure Heart helpful with the role Adorabat takes on, because she becomes the positive reinforcement for Mao Mao. While it would be wrong to say that Mao Mao is incompetent, he's incredibly sufficient as a warrior and a lawman, these abilities and confidence in those abilities are built upon the lies sustaining Mao Mao's glass ego. Because he was told by prominent figures in his life that he was never good enough, Mao Mao looked to those figures and symbols to find his way rather than embrace what he already had, as it had been disrespected. This is often represented by Mao Mao's need to impress or adhere to these figures/symbols. Like, in the episode where his sword is made fun of for being basic, Mao Mao then attempts to use his sword in multiple and incompatible ways because multi-use and special abilities are something that many people from his family, specifically his sisters in this case, have in their weapons. And thus Mao Mao attempts to shift his standard to those he sees as superior. Or in the cobbler episode. As has been established Mao Mao wishes to be like his family and be a legendary warrior, and to do so his family tree has adhered to a Hero's Code, something that in the plot of the episode, arbitrarily forbids the consumption of cobbler, something Mao Mao loves but deprives himself of due to the Code. Once again, Mao Mao is bending over backwards to sustain the lie at the core of his ego, that he on his own cannot be worthy of his family and must instead do things exactly as they did in the attempt to be like them. In this sense, Adorabat serves Mao Mao's character as his moral support, convincing him to be himself and reaffirming that he is and can indeed be a legendary hero, with or without his family's values, and in turn Mao Mao lets down his walls to Adorabat, allowing himself out of the fog of principle and becoming vulnerable, attempting to help Adorabat along her path rather than disregard or belittle her like Mao Mao's father did to him

    Things like the family like interactions really boost this show just watching the trio bounce off each other really just makes me smile. This was also a good criticism, I hadn’t really acknowledged the flip floppy nature of Mao and BadgerClops’ relationship but I hope it gets better in season 2. Good stuff that makes me look at a show a bit more critically and helps see why parts of it are so special.

    Cartoon Network seems to produce one gem at a time now and this is it. The show has an almost Kuwaii feel to it with the animation. Unlike Gumball this is adventurous escapism over situational comedy so it checks multiple boxes with its comedy and fantasy elements. This show is definitely in my Saturday morning rotation when I want to zone and chill.

    Very cool video, dude. I really loved your in-depth analysis of the characters! I tend to look over most of their flaws because of personal bias, so you pointing them out made me see them from a different (cooler) angle ^^
    Just wanted to add (and this has nothing to do with the actual video, which is great) for all y'all in the comments who are upset about the idea of Badgerclops and Mao Mao being together: Y'all are so weird?? Why are you getting mad over the mere Possibility of two guys dating?? It's not even canon????
    Also, even if you don't ship them, can you seriously deny that they give off old bickering couple vibes? Can you come up to me and tell me, without a shadow of doubt, that they're NOT Adorabat's parents? If you can, you're in denial,, sorry...

    • @KindlingKatalyst
      @KindlingKatalyst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually it’s basically canon that Mao Mao is already involved with Snugglemagne: they say “I love you” to each other over the phone in the Tanya episode. The ship teasing is very obvious with the king- people really can’t fathom that two guys can be best bros and emotionally intimate and not dating. It’s sad. If they were female, this wouldn’t even be seen as any different than normal.

      Thank you! This show has so much potential; it is both wholesome and clever in the way it presents the family dynamic, and most of the humor and gags are genuinely some of the wittiest things I’ve seen in animated media. Unfortunately, there has yet to be any news of future content as the show seems to be in an indefinite limbo. But I do still really hope it sees the light of day, as there are many more stories that can be told with these great characters.

    • @StickyBrickBuilder
      @StickyBrickBuilder  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For the most part, I agree. The effect I was trying to convey was the idea of a "found family" with the distinction of two of the trio having to be the more mature and responsible ones (which they sometimes don't succeed at).
      As I said in the video, they kinda fight way too much for a healthy couple (even for friends, for that matter). I also think the idea of them being like protective older brothers to Adorabat is another good interpretation.

    Fun Fact: Mao Mao is mostly inspired by Puss in Boots, and the fact that Puss also recently found a family of his own (Kitty and Perrito) just like Mao Mao did (Badgerclops and Adorabat) makes it even better.

    • @StickyBrickBuilder
      @StickyBrickBuilder  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yes, I definitely noticed the similarities between Mao Mao and Puss in Boots:
      1. Small cat
      2. Deep voice
      3. Iconic clothes
      4. Great fighter who uses a sword
      5. Egos (which they work through)
      And of course, they both learn to break down their walls and let their lives be touched by 2 other characters, creating a very sweet and wholesome found family trio.
      Needless to say, I love Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’s dynamic just as much as Mao Mao’s 😊
