Bro that is legitimately the feeling I get from this series, I feel like Ive been watching for a couple years now, and I grew up in the 90s so i had an snes but theres something very familiar about this and i could never figure out what it was until i just read your comment, its the same feeling as waking up saturday morning
This is one of those games that even as a kid i thought this had to be a pain to make. I imagine thats the reason it didnt have a wild range of sequels since prior to proper 3D gaming this was amazing.
Probably one of the best arcade ports the NES did. I had no idea there was an arcade sequel, and happy to know the ROM is out there, so definitely need to check it out!
These retro video game dives continue to be a calming addition to my weekends off from work. Been loving the long form videos for months, but glad you got (hopefullly) a break with a shorter game dive.
This game was incredibly surreal to me as a kid. The environments were bizarre, even scary, and the strange "creatures" and traps that warped out of the terrain to gobble up your marble were practically jump scares. And of course, I loved it. It's interesting that Snake Rattle & Roll was heavily inspired by Marble Madness, and many of the visual effects and some of the physics quirks from that were used in their later games.. so in a roundabout way, you could say Marble Madness is a direct ancestor of Battletoads!

I used to play the gameboy version as a kid. That one only had five levels i can't remember if it even kept score or not and no special ending at the end it just kicked you back to level 2 and looped over and over. It was still fun to play i just used to see how many loops i can go through before game over lol:) now that i watched this i may have to pick this one up now:)
9:13 - "you'll notice that if you hold down the A button, you'll go faster" . I've had this NES cartridge since I got the game as our video-game Christmas present for 1990. I litterally never knew I could press A to go faster. I am looking forward to playing this game again soon; with this new knowledge, I'll be unstoppable!!! Until that Clown-Upside-Down level, at least. :D

Oh man, my cousin and I played the heck out of this game when we were kids. We never beat it; we only managed to beat Silly Race a handful of times, and never got past Ultimate Race's moving platforms the few times we got that far.
Omg Marble Madness and Mike Tyson's Punch Out were two games I could NEVER hope to beat as a kid. You made Marble Madness look so easy. Back in 89 I was almosr 7 years old and would have worshiped you as a gaming god lol. Another awesome video and I can't wait for the next!!

Great concept for a retro game channel! Marble Madness is one of the earliest NES games I recall seeing as a kid, and it's held a special place in my memory ever since. I've always been terrible at the game, so this is very cool! Nice video.
This game has always had mysterious mechanics and a weird air of mysticism. Nobody expects to do well at it. If you do get good at it, well none of that changed. Cerny sure made a game for the ages here, hell of a start to a hell of a career.
Mark Cerny was a master in getting the most out of a system, he did California Games on the Master System which wasn't that great but he got 4 layers of parallax scrolling on a system with 2 layers by animating tiles to the background and gave the illusion of extra layers. He was a genius
This game had a huge influence on me for some reason. I used to have these dreams of being the marble in this game. I would go through the course and it would be so real. I love this game and the memories it gives me when thinking about it. Thank you for doing these games.
Marble Madness was one of those games that to be honest, I never got into, never really saw the appeal of, and sorta just slept on as a kid. So it's interesting to see just what I missed. Thanks for making this.

dude. this is the hardest game on this planet. hands down. I got goosebumps hearing the theme music again. I always think of your puppers, I got to see the puppy grow up, give em a hug for me.
When I was a little kid the pizza shop by my house has a marble madness machine. I was obsessed wt that. A few yrs later when I got it on the nes for Xmas I literally cried lmao.
I was born in '84. Growing up, I always heard of the Atari but never played it even to this day. Marble Madness does look good considering the year it was produced. And David Wise is just a mad lad with music. His music is catchy no matter what engine it's on.
Mark Cerny did the special stages in sonic 2. the psuedo-3D perspective in that game is super cool, as is this one. Marble Madness is also one of the earliest games to use a FM Chip for the sound. The combination between it and the POKEY sound of atari is really cool.

Great video! This game was the first that I raged about. It took quit a few years before I went back to fully understand the physics and beat the game (I was very young when I first played this). Thanks for the guide, it was quite enjoyable.
I actually grew up with a functional Arcade version of the game at home due to my father being an engineer at Six Flags Great America! My mother and I rarely were able to get past the 'hard' stage though
Never tried this version but I have played a few others. Knowing that Rare developed this one makes sense to then they releasing Snake rattle n’ roll, which is a criminally underrated game.
One of my all time favorites. I've had this game since 1989 and I've only finished it 2 times. I usually die at the last stage at the vanishing bridge.
One thing I used to do with this game back in the day was duel the Black Marble. Sometimes I could kill it before time ran out, sometimes not. Once it died immediately, but usually it was a long and difficult fight.
Re: Pounding Hammers. It helps to observe. The PHs' area only covers two tiles in width. They only spawn on the leftmost tiles; none appear on the right ones. Move your marble to the right of the two tiles, then rush forward. It doesn't matter when you do it; you won't even get scratched.
One other tip, dive for the finish line. You can use "A" and try to cross the finish line at the flag that is closest to your marble. Or if near a turn, don't worry about slowing down, slam the "A" and try to cross the line down the middle. You don't have to worry about the "dizzy" animation or having any control, once you cross, you are safe.
18:46 You can get hit by the first birds beyond the "ramp to nowhere" and you will be respawned on the other side of that corner. I don't know if it saves any time but I've always found it to be slightly easier than trying to navigate around that obstacle.
I was finally able to beat this game after playing many hours as a kid learning the controls...that black marble would always give me trouble. My brother and I would always race each other...the last level is a little tricky though

Didn't play for 30+ years and still beat it on the first try. Awesome game
