This game was incredibly surreal to me as a kid. The environments were bizarre, even scary, and the strange "creatures" and traps that warped out of the terrain to gobble up your marble were practically jump scares. And of course, I loved it.
It's interesting that Snake Rattle & Roll was heavily inspired by Marble Madness, and many of the visual effects and some of the physics quirks from that were used in their later games.. so in a roundabout way, you could say Marble Madness is a direct ancestor of Battletoads!

Re: Pounding Hammers. It helps to observe. The PHs' area only covers two tiles in width. They only spawn on the leftmost tiles; none appear on the right ones. Move your marble to the right of the two tiles, then rush forward. It doesn't matter when you do it; you won't even get scratched.

One other tip, dive for the finish line. You can use "A" and try to cross the finish line at the flag that is closest to your marble. Or if near a turn, don't worry about slowing down, slam the "A" and try to cross the line down the middle. You don't have to worry about the "dizzy" animation or having any control, once you cross, you are safe.
