- Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 19
Krystian Zimerman, piano and conductor, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Recorded at the Musikverein, Große Saal, Vienna, 12/1991
This is defintely one of the most underrated Beethoven pieces
Rondo (molto allegro) for example
One my favorite concertos by him
It's not underrated. It's just not as intense and passionate as the other four. Still a very fine composition, but without that "wtf am I listening to" sensation you would feel in a Mozart concerto or later Beethoven.
@@pierfrancescopeperoni yeah i take back what i said, i was new to music back then
Also give a hand to Mozarts last 10 piano concertos that got a mention somewhere in this wannabe Mozart concertos. I think i heard ideas from 10 concertos. I may have lost count. Lmao. No melodic talent whatsoever. Thank God he had Haydn, who knows just how to write inspiring music with a lack of melody.
I agree. Especially the last minute of the second movement. Breathtakingly beautiful, where the music is in the silence between the notes. One of Beethoven's most beautiful pieces.
Qué maravilla!, por Dios...Desde la Patagonia en una noche llena de estrellas: GRACIAS!!!
The music of a composer is basically the result of his experiences, his social background, the teaching he received and finally his own feeling, synthesis of the factors mentioned. Beethoven’s music, specially in his concerts, this synthesis is surprising, astonishing and fabulous, since his music admirably reflects human sensibility, however deep it may be. The pianist’s interpretation and orchestration is magnificent. Viva Beethoven and his immortal music, the greatest musician that ever existed. Bravissimo!!!!
"the greatest musician that ever existed. Bravissimo!!!!"
This is a glorious and under-rated Beethoven concerto . There is beautiful integration of the orchestra and keyboard . Zimerman has total control of the process . I get shivers up my spine every time I listen to it .
idk why, but this is my favorite Beethoven concerto..
When I was an undergraduate student at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, I would go to concerts every week given by the College of Music. This is where I learned to appreciate the classical music of the great composers Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi, Wagner, Grieg, Strauss, and many more.
It doesn't get better than this. Perfect in every way.
1. Allegro con brio: 00:29
2. Adagio: 14:16
3. Rondo, molto allegro: 24:39
ALways helps❤
Thanks.
thanks ❤
Beethoven piano concerto number 2 with Zimmerman Conducting and playing the Plano. One the best Beethoven piano concerto.very beautiful.
Einfach atemberaubend!
🤗💖💖💖
The best performance of Beethoven's 2nd concerto till this day..in my humble opinion.
Zimerman a dull Boring stiff machine player! Zimerman so over-rated pianist! Better ones Beethoven piano concerto no 2 players Are Wilhelm Kempff (a class of his own) Ashkenazy ( The volcanic piano sound!) Emil Gilels Radu Lupu

So so beautiful. Thank you!
Something about the way Zimmerman puts his finger up to his lips at 2:02 to signal to the orchestra is so charming to me.
Благодарю за праздник! Смотреть и слушать концерт в таком исполнении - большая честь !
Anyone else here after watching the season one finale of Ozark? It's quite amazing the jolt of appreciation you get after hearing a classical piece on TV.
yep! I am also a classical pianist, so that scene really moved me.
Beautiful !! Love it !! 💐❤️
This man Zimmerman the best piano player in the world ever, he is absolutely unbelievable. He devour you while conducting and then takes you with him over the clouds in sky. After this, watch Beethoven piano concerto number one at age 24.
Agreed! There is only one who is in the same league as him
Come on guys! Not true! Zimerman is Robot human machine with dry cold colorless piano sound! Much better are Kempff( beautiful tone!) Ashkenazy( volcano colorful piano sound!) Radu Lupu( the most colorful sound!) Emil Gilels( golden tone!) Maurizio Pollini( more genius than Zimerman!) All the modern players are cold and colorless like Zimerman Kissin( ice cold sound!) Crazy world we are living the crazy deaf people claiming that 18-years old Student Yunchan Lim the greatest ever! No puedo estar más de acuerdo.
Really good music by Beethoven.
Bella y enorme obra, interpretada con toda majestuosidad y técnica por esta grande orquesta y este extraordinario pianista. Muchas gracias !!

The best I've heard. Others say Mozart. No. This is early Beethoven, different, already with those strong accents and abrupt dynamic changes. I like what he does with the orchestra as much as what he plays. Everything is perfectly synced, a perfect combination of very well rehearsed and yet very spontaneous in sound.
Cannot disagree

VERY WELL REHEARSED ! CONGRATULATIONS !
C'est merveilleux !
Beautiful piece, the Adagio of this is superb and highly overlooked in Beethoven repertoire. There is a nice version of this on BIS label, but this piano is fantastic.
Beautiful ❤
Wonderful! And this early piece of the young Beethoven sounds really "modern" to me (listen from 12:40 to 12:55).
Finally someone who acknowledges this
The cadenza was written much later in his life.
@@seangan9402 it indeed reminds me the famous "ragtime" of Op.111
@@PEDRO_boaro I listened to several recordings of this concerto and must say that Zimerman's view and interpretation (of this and of other concertos, to be honest) is really fascinating to me. I find Zimerman's style of playing always very deep, centered, full of expression and pathos. In short, a must to listen to 😀
@@seppstefano that's right, Beethoven heard the future
the other four are superb and grand but this concerto is just so special to me. it’s the great synthesis and the peak of the classical style. despite its relative minimalism it contains so much energy and expression, it’s a big big triumph. even if this sounds really really mozartian, this is haydn taken to the utmost level.
Wow so amazing 😍 awesome Zimmerman
Difícilmente se pueda igualar y superar este concierto maravilloso,Orquesta y solista impecables y el Maestro Zimerman de lejos y el mejor pianista del siglo XX lllll

Блестяще!!! Причем Все!
Sublime !
His rather eccentric personality has kept him from occupying the position among pianists he deserves.
He is a very well know pianist, specially for his interpretation of Beethoven and Chopin, no? This is what I found on internet : "Krystian Zimerman is a Polish concert pianist and conductor, who has been described as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. In 1975, he won the IX International Chopin Piano Competition.
@@Caroline1261 To the cognoscenti he is of course very well known. But in the general sense of being a great virtuoso whose name is seen a lot by the general musical public, I don’t think so. It’s partly a question of different times, I suppose, but compare how Trifonov’s career was launched.
@@ransomcoates546 Yes Trifonov is well known. I like his interpretation of Chopin. But taking about eccentricity, I think Trifonov is way more eccentric! His face always distract me when I see him playing. I really like Kissin. In fact, Kissin is my favorite pianist for Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Chopin. :)
I think his reluctance to play in the US and his refusal to allow much advance concert promotion has kept him a bit under the radar and made him seem to be less accessible to his fans.
@@catherinescott562 based Zimmerman
спасибо
Leonard Bernstein passed away unfortunately at that time.
That’s why Zimermann had to conduct as well, didn’t he?
And he does it so well; no need for Bernstein here, and it must have been much cheaper for Deutsche Grammophon.
yeah :(
Yeah, Bernstein and Zimmerman had meant to perform all 5 concertos, but Bernstein died before the first two concertos were performed, and Zimmerman and the Vienna Phil made the decision to record the first and second concerto
So interesting to see the soloist conducting from his instrument. Such a different style to Bernstein. By the way, the players don't appear to be looking at him at all. Maybe from the peripherals.
on these pieces conductors are not needed, like Mozarts concertos
It's almost like his fingers are not touching the keyboard, it's like he is playing with his mind.
A Zimmermann le falta sentimiento
....a betthoven le sobra
I've also been told that I play better when my fingers aren't touching the keys.
@@tommyrauk8205 Totally relatable. I’ve been told the same! 😂
Amazing… Beethoven thought of this concerto at age of 17 while Mozart was still alive.
En este tipo de conciertos no pongan propagandas en el medio por favor y respetuosamente.

Ozark (capítulo final temporada 1) me trajo aquí, o me hizo volver más bien.

I wonder why Mr. Zimerman is weary his ring on his right hand? Anyone know? Such an amazing pianist, very beautiful!
Wearing the wedding ring on the left hand is an Angloshphere thing. In many European countries it's worn on the right hand.
@@mikerasmusson8749 Thanks, I didn't know :)
When was the updated candenza added to this concerto? Must be nice Beethoven can get a "do over" years later to make it sound better. Someone was worried about their legacy of their first concerto. Bach did the same thing, updated his works years later to make them better.
Is he conducting as well or is he just really into the music
Conducting

I came to listen from 14:17
I feel someone’s humming throughout the whole piece !! Is the pianist humming as he’s playing? Maybe it’s just my imagination..
I think you are right. I had the same feeling but was not sure because it is barely audible. I recommend to listen to Glenn Gould, in many of his music we can hear his humming clearly and I like it.
One man show.
For me, Zimerman in the same category as Rubinstein and Horowitz!
15:34 isso lembra muito a nona sinfonia, a parte inicial.

Beats me why the soloist is conducting. The Orchestra is not even looking at him, they're focused on the music.

Wow this piece was all over the place😊. I consider Beethoven, the greatest ever at learning *cough*, i mean copying Mozars style snd techniques. This concerto has some innovative bright spots, but im more impressed with his attention to detail on mozarts piano concerto techniques. Ive been studying mozart a long time, so its obvious Beethoven did his homework and opened his music idea book he evidently hauled around.
All this piece shows, is Beethoven was no mozart when it came to melody and structure. This music you can tell was a struggle for him to do. Its no wonder he wanted to ignore and rewrite all the rules and standards, because he didnt have the ability to complete a work with structure. The man is a genius at variations, but coming up with a theme and naturally transition to diffent themes in a pattern, Like sonata form for example, was just not his strength at all. Judging by this pece, he was quite horrible at it. He had to reinvent himself away from forms and standards, because transition to multiple themes, development section, candenza or coda, and then come back to the tonic key? Thats a hard ask for Beethoven. It shows you how hard it is to follow these forms. Only mozart and Haydn to some extent masteree them. Beethoven is no mozart.
What is the concierto that begins like egmount?
The Concerto number 5 begins (a little) like Egmont.
different interpretation ... interesting ... !
