There is perhaps not another pianist of the 20th/21st Centuries with a finer sense of tonality, phrasing, colour, and beauty than Krystian Zimerman. His interpretations of the music of Chopin and the other early Romantics are SECOND TO NONE! Not only that, but his Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven Concerti performances are out of this WORLD! There is nobody else with a stronger sense of tonal beauty, tonal colour, and pristine clarity like that of Mr. Zimerman. While most prefer Rubinstein as the top Chopin interpreter, I strongly disagree with this belief. Although true that Rubinstein was indeed one of the Greats of the 20th Century, Zimerman's performances of the early Romantic compositions are surpassed by nobody else.
For me Rubinstein and Zimerman are equal at Chopin! While Zimerman has surely a technical advantage over Rubinstein, Rubinstein on the other hand has a rhythmical advantage over Zimerman. That makes them for my taste pretty equal! Rubinstein and Zimerman have more in common: same golden tone and they both serve the composer! I put them both at No. 1! :D
Zimerman was 31 when this was recorded. And only comparable to Rubinstein in regards to performing Chopin. That says alot about how incredibly gifted he is.
For young pianists, this is an object lesson in how to play the piano. His beautifully relaxed technique is reminiscent of the great pianists of the past - Arrau, Rubenstein, Michelangeli, Richter - not a movement is wasted, not a single passage forced. Compare this to the highly tense and laboured playing of a pianist like Kissin. Equally effective results, but whereas Zimmerman hardly raises a sweat in the most difficult passages (e.g. codas of Ballades 1 & 4), Kissin's playing is full of tension and effort. Zimmerman's effortless technique, while certainly the result of had work, frees him from all technical concerns, allowing him to focus on tone, phrasing and structure and to imbue his playing with the most wonderful musical poetry.
Rubinstein's technique is garbage, though. And his complete lack of rhythm and disregard for score nuances and tempi are annoying. Zimerman is great, so was Richter.
I don’t think Kissins technique is that bad. It might look like more effort but then again everyone is different. What works for Zimerman doesn’t work for Kissin and vice versa. Of course you can look at this video and admire his technique but in the end everyone has to find their own approach to technique imho. Every hand and body is different
Our Polish the best pianist 🙂.He has Chopin in his blood. Incredible sensitivity to Polish notes. The soul is eternal and does not have any earthly designations, but there is something in it that those who are born in some cradle have it in their genes. 😊

There is no question about it this man Zimmerman is one of a kind, no one can come close to him. His pianos playing in Beethoven numbers 1, 2 , 3. And 4 is out of this world. He takes you with him over the sky.
Zimmerman: so poised, so graceful, .... so heavenly in his tone and touch....and not that it really matters .....so handsome in his physical form: a modern version of Liszt in his youth.
More like Liszt in His later stages, Liszt in His youth was more about showing off than anything else. He’d even add unnecessary things to the music that would make the music less beautiful and the performance more focused on the performer. Zimerman is the complete opposite, while He posses immense skill, He uses it to express the piece and even though it’s His own interpretation He doesn’t try to make the piece centered around Him, reminds me of Chopin much more than Liszt or any other composer.
Thank you so much for posting these wonderful performances. I saw him play once in London and it remains one of the most wonderful musical experiences I have ever had. An amazing artist!

In these dark and turbulent times the crystal clarity and sensitivity to the emotional climate around Chopin in Europe at a similar time of chaotic change comes through with heart energy and compassion, I feel. Thank you, Zimmerman and UTube for this elegant balm for our wounds.
I discovered this recording just after watching "Pianomania", a movie about the art and science of preparing a piano for the artist who will be playing it. I can see that this piano is perfectly prepared for M. Zimerman. The combination of artist and instrument is fabulous.
@@gregoryludkovsky5185 I actually started to think that Zimerman is really reincarnation of Chopin, he looks like him and his playing.... It's like listening to a beautiful story...
I couldn't agree with you more on this. I have been really liking a few rather young pianists but they are really showy (I don't suggest that they have nothing to show off) and their body languages were excessive and distracting. Their techniques are often amazing and unreal but there is that ego you mentioned... It really affects how their music talent is perceived.
@@cindyzhou1571 I know this would be a bit harsh but check out George Harliono. His expressions piss me off. Whenever I see his expressions, it looks as tho someone broke up with him. His over the top angry dramatic expressions makes me cringe. Great pianist but bad expressions.

If we're sending another golden record in a spaceship for other intelligent lifeform out there to discover, I would suggest Zimerman's Chopin Ballades. It is a testament of the best humanity could achieve. This, and Gould's 1980 Goldberg Variations.
Zimmerman must have switched gears from his early days of playing the Ballade Op.23 to this video performance. An earlier recording has Zimmerman playing this piece slower and without much zeal, but this performance is just SUPERB!! Even better than Horowitz whose performance of this piece was my intro to the Ballades of Chopin.
Zimmerman lets the listener in on the inner architecture of Chopin's works The elegance of his phrasing is beyond belief You find yourself lost in Chopin's world
Zimerman has such a refined touch that is able to express the playful moods and gentle melodies of Chopin's Scherzo No. 2 in a way they can be really enjoyed an appreciated. Some interpretations of this piece are at a tempo that is so high, much of the enjoyment is lost. It's comparable to savoring a sip of fine wine vs. gulping it in one shot. It all goes to the same place, though very unique experiences.

Of course you can look at this video and admire his technique but in the end everyone has to find their own approach to technique imho. Every hand and body is different
Zimerman is fantastic, the best pianist, I love his interpretations, no one is like him.
Richter
Mr. Odruzov, Richter on the huge late romantic repertoire, by a hair; Zimmerman on classic and early romantic repertoire, also by a hair.
@@OFWarhhbTN what do you mean by " by a hair"?
Our Polish the best pianist 🙂.He has Chopin in his blood. Incredible sensitivity to Polish notes. The soul is eternal and does not have any earthly designations, but there is something in it that those who are born in some cradle have it in their genes. 😊
@@dmitryodruzov1781 I think he means that Richter is better on "huge late romantic repertoire" by a hair, while Zimerman is better on classic and early romantic repertoire by a hair.
My tears are running because his playing is so beautiful, and Chopins music is getting such beautiful treatment. I think the composer is very happy.
This is now my favorite video on youtube. It has everything. Chopin ballades, scherzos and Schubert's impromptus. All played by "the" Krystian Zimerman. It cannot get any better than this.
1:07:21 - 1:07:51, the way he transfers the melody between voices is incredible.
I knew he is a wizard! He plays so magically that even the bench change at 23:28
Oh no
OMG, it's amazing you saw that! Somebody is listening with his eyes open! :) (He's back on stool #2 at the end of the piece.) Oh, well, he's allowed more than one take, I guess... The result is phenomenal!

@@omerkorkmaz6093 Some magic in the making, perhaps, but my comment from last year was genuinely mine. If you meant the initial comment from Kelvin, well, I don't know about that, but if the Ballades were a different upload of the same footage, then it makes sense... but it's more than just one keen eyed listener. :-)
Apesar de não entender nada de música mas amo músicas clássicas. É simplesmente divino! Transcende a alma. Tudo aqui é uma um espetáculo de beleza e sensibilidade. Bravooooooooo
Krystian Zimerman's rendition is so gracious and eloquent.

Love and admire him always!! One hour only listening Chopin an Schubert!!! Am going ti repeat it many times !!! Thanks !!!
He is just so perfect! Art at its most perfect state! Wonder how he gets all the inspiration. He plays with all the dimension , dynamics and rythem.
Какое счастье иметь возможность слушать этого замечательного пианиста !Жаль, что современной молодежи это не очень нужно!
Да. Молодым людям нужен этот пианист, но они этого еще не знают .. ;-)
And he's only 31 years old at the time of this recording. Spiritually, though he must be 150. Brilliant.
Simply the greatest pianist ever in my opinion
horowitz is as good and maybe better
I wouldn't go as far as saying he's the greatest ever, but I think that he is most certainly one of the greatest pianists currently alive.
For my money the greatest Chopin interpreter for sure.
Of living pianists, perhaps only Sokolov is in the same class.
zimmerman is in the top, but his recordings make him the number 1
Thank you so much for posting these wonderful performances. I saw him play once in London and it remains one of the most wonderful musical experiences I have ever had. An amazing artist!
For the set of four Ballades Zimmerman's stellar recording is one of the two recordings I hold dear and near to my heart.
Our Polish the best pianist 🙂.He has Chopin in his blood. Incredible sensitivity to Polish notes. The soul is eternal and does not have any earthly designations, but there is something in it that those who are born in some cradle have it in their genes. 😊 Krystian jest genialny.
Да Кристиан лучший исполнитель Шопена, Польская кровь даёт о себе знать.А какой у него первый концерт Шопена, просто шедевр.
Get down to Earth, Chopin's genius obviously comes from his French dad !
His performance is out of this world. It is utterly amazing and heavenly. Thank you so much for uploading the video.
In these dark and turbulent times the crystal clarity and sensitivity to the emotional climate around Chopin in Europe at a similar time of chaotic change comes through with heart energy and compassion, I feel. Thank you, Zimmerman and UTube for this elegant balm for our wounds.
What a greaaat piano performance!! I admire him.
I discovered this recording just after watching "Pianomania", a movie about the art and science of preparing a piano for the artist who will be playing it. I can see that this piano is perfectly prepared for M. Zimerman. The combination of artist and instrument is fabulous.
-- Un enregistrement d'une importance considérable. Un pure merveille. --
"une merveille".
Wish Ballade no3 had more repeats in it, that melody is amazing!!
Mmm, I'll have to disagree, I think because it wasn't repeated too much it made it more special and magical sounding
I feel the same about the A major section in Ballade no. 1 👍

Which makes me as jealous as all hell. This guy is phenomenal !!!!!!!

Like a prince at the piano.
LIKE REINCARNATED CHOPIN HIMSELF
@@gregoryludkovsky5185 I actually started to think that Zimerman is really reincarnation of Chopin, he looks like him and his playing.... It's like listening to a beautiful story...
@@Smortnt .
LIKE a prince at the piano? Are you saying he ISN'T a prince at the piano?
I know it's superlative when I can only hear the composer and not the ego of the performer!
Alas, very few performers realize that!
@@cindyzhou1571 Is Lang Lang an example ?
@@yashbspianoandcompositions1042 Yes. He was more extreme at the beginning of his career. He has shown more maturity and reservation now.
@@cindyzhou1571 I know this would be a bit harsh but check out George Harliono. His expressions piss me off. Whenever I see his expressions, it looks as tho someone broke up with him. His over the top angry dramatic expressions makes me cringe. Great pianist but bad expressions.
The music is sublime and watching his beautiful hands is like watching a ballet !
The clarity of his touch is superb! :)
This man created unity where too many pianists use a piece wise rendition. Bravo !!!!
It's irresistible. His playing is flawless and without any gimmicks. All you hear is the music itself.
I've seen a lot of videos on the internet, but I think this is my favourite video on the internet.
I've been lucky enough to hear him perform in Atlanta twice, and both were two of the greatest piano recitals I've ever witnessed. He is technically and musically flawless, and he travels with his own Hamburg Steinway.
+emorydude2 His Steinway is part of his body, just as his music comes directly from his soul.
+emorydude2 You are so fortunate to have heard him in the USA. He doesn't come see us anymore :( Maybe when I am in Japan or Europe I can see him perform.
I think he stopped coming to the US since the DEA destroyed his Steinway looking for drugs a few years ago. Can’t say I blame him!
Steven Yourke they did? Link on that? That’s absolutely terrible.
Gwynbleidd Roach I recall seeing something on it some years ago. Apparently, his piano was torn up at Kennedy Airport in NYC by airport security looking for drugs. He was furious and decided never to play the US again. So much for our idiotic war on drugs.

Merci pour ces bons moments surtout pour le 1er scherzo de Chopin. Memoire prodigieuse ! ❤
There is a passage in the first piece at about 4:55 that sounds like pure joy. Like the moments of joy in life, it's very brief, but does return.
Watching his technique is as mesmerizing as listening to the music.
My all time favourite performance of classical music. Can't keep my ears off of this! :D
It took the entire ballade no 2 to get the fitted sheet on my bed, and that was a perfect expression of what emotions I felt....
Never realised that all these pieces were next to each other, I thought he played one every day for two weeks perhaps, playing one each day and taking breaks or whatever. He plays them all in one-sit. Remarkable
Well 23:28 bench changes
Yup its edited. I would not believe that this was all taken in one take. Go check out a video by a channel called sound field on how classical performances are edited.
Hermosa está Balada .

Even better than Horowitz whose performance of this piece was my intro to the Ballades of Chopin.

definitely i can hear the different voicing parts, amazing performance, nice enjoyment.
This music hurts and helps at the same time. What the magishians they are- Chopin, Shubert and genious pianist
