- Okay, I realize I am very negative about some things in this video. Dramatic, even. But I do end up liking the Bandai S.H. Figuarts Kylo Ren action figure from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I really do. After I get rid of the stuff that was bugging me.

Totally agree with you about that! The Figuarts base body with the Black Series soft goods looks like a solid combination. It also appeared as if he had modified the soft goods as well, with some tears and possibly a thin bendy wire. I wish I had the skill to customize/kit bash figures like that, you can take something meh and turn it into something amazing!!
Eric Isner Yea it does! I think its a great combination and probably makes it the best Kylo Ren figure after the Hot toys one!

Bought this without hesitation and I think it looks amazing, but I sort of agree about the skirt. I'll probably buy a black series just for the robe.

Great review, Fwoosh. I was also frustrated with the plastic robe, but after seeing your review I'm happy to know there is an option out there to customize it!
Figurarts Kylo Ren looks pretty great but I'm happy with my Black Series version. Might have to make a few modifications to him however. Such as trimming the robes so they don't drape so low.
+DesuShade the D.O. Double G. There is a revised version of the Black Series Kylo Ren shipping now. More texture on the plastic scarf thing, and shorter robes. I haven't found it yet but there are pictures on the Fwoosh front page.
+The Fwoosh I'm really torn on this. On one had it's cool to see them revising figures and making them better. On the other I find it hard to not feel a little annoyed having an inferior version of these figures because I bought them when they first came out.
DesuShade the D.O. Double G. Oh, believe me, I feel the same. My only saving grace is that I can give the originals to the boy. He was more than happy to get a Rey and BB-8, not caring that the eyes are a little baggy and BB-8 is a little cleaner.
I like the Hasbro one better.
this is one of those cases, where every individual element of the figure is done well (like sculpt and whatnot), but when you put it all together it looks like crap. I agree with you, straight out of the box he just looks so...weird. Not what we deserve for the 50-60 dollars this figure is going for.
S. H. has done this new hand design thing with Ultraman as of late(and i was shocked that they didn't use this from the beginning of this series) it really seems to work against people with big hands(but that's my opinion)because every time you move it it feels like the last time you will be able to move it. Oh the cloth robes look fantastic on this figure and now i will need to hunt down another Hasbro version to do that.
I actually like Bandai's decision of just leaving the scarf and hood hanging and not detached. While some articulated joints like SHF Thor's mantle would be nice, I still say I can't see the reason why they have to sacrifice head and neck articulation just for the sake of a "natural" looking hood that sticks to his shoulders. That being said, I'm having trouble being a fan of cloth materials since they're hard to clean if dusts and cobwebs start to stick on them, and the fact that they do sometimes tend to detoriate by age to a point they become sorta "brittle".

Cloth is the way to go. I love soft goods mixed with plastic.

the head is too big for my taste, and the skirt kinda bad for any dynamic poses. They should add dynamic skirt as an option.
I get why the neck is too long for adding the hood, but this just wont work for me.

Ultimate Venom I'm completely good with the head. He just didn't have a fishbowl for a hood in the movie.
It’s kinda odd coming back here, I forget how new Gus is to the channel.
I think my little brother Andrew will love this! He's been looking for the best 6 inch Kylo Ren and he likes this one the best. Now I'll ask him if he wants to get the Black Series version for the soft goods and switch them out but I think he'll like this a lot. He's 11 so I'll be sure to go over everything with him.

Actually he didn't get his Kylo Ren because the eBay seller deleted his account before sending it. I think it was a d--- head stealing money through PayPal or something.

+Lordsebastian101 I didn't buy many more 8-bit figures because of how many Marvel Legends started coming out, and then the whole Star Wars sickness I've contracted, haha. And thanks, I'm having fun with the intros so I may keep on doing it, especially if people enjoy them.
I pre-ordered the Mafex Kylo Ren and hopefully I don't end up shooting myself in the foot because he was not cheap. (Knock on wood).
Same here. I did manage to pass on the Figuarts unmasked Kylo, so I'm not completely poor yet. Yet. Give it another month of solicitations.

The only way to save this figure is buy covering it up with the black series robes. Worst SHF Star wars figure.

Belt's upside down because the lightsaber is holstered on the wrong side.
+CapitalStreetPhotography The lightsaber on the left is how it came. I think I did put it on upside down when I took everything off, but I put it back the way it was when I put the lower skirt back on.
I tried flipping it around and luckily it works!
The model kit kylo ren will probably have the same problem that model kit Vader had with the cape shell
+Devan Sim More than likely, but Phasma being solicited with a cloth cape along with the plastic gives me a slight hope. Not counting on it but you never know.
The arms look really skinny on this figure. Is the Mafex similar proportion wise??
It's a little thicker and broader. Not too much to look out of scale but it's definitely more intimidating.
I saw somebody who took out only the from panela os the plastic skirt! Looks better than no skirt at all!

At first, like you, didn't like the figure. Then you took off the headscarfthing and I was like, "Hmmm... HMMM." I definitely like the lightsaber more than the black series version. It's a little more lightsabery and enjoy the look of the color more. I'm still waiting on the rerelease of Luke in April (I think) since he's like 100 dollars now. He just keeps going up, haha. I'm happy with the Mafex Vader and model kit Boba Fett... For NOW. My Boba Fett just looks so good on my display, he looks like he's flying :) Anyway thanks for the review, but now I have to buy both SH and Blackseries to get the best look haha

Soft goods look so much better IMO. Soon as you put that Black series next to this it was such
a huge difference.

+paroot boonthom They can pop apart, there is a ball there, but like the wrists and bottom of the neck everything is tight on this one.
This figure looks amazing but at the present time I have no money for figures cz I kinda spoiled my self and preordered the black series wave 5 and bought the original wave 2 from 2013 for a hefty price so I'm on the down low for a while.
I'm for sure disappointed with the outer skirting and hood/scarf thing, otherwise the figure looks great. I'm kinda glad I didn't end up getting it, hopefully MAFEX will end up doing him soon.
+tuhtols I totally forgot about MAFEX. Their Stormtrooper isn't due until what, next August? No word of any other TFA figures. Weird.
The Fwoosh Yeah I'm pretty sure you're right about the Stormtrooper not coming until next August. It seems a little weird not to capitalize on TFA characters now, though it seems to me MAFEX is a little more concerned with Batman v Superman figures.

IKR! The wrist pegs on my Figuarts have been snapping off recently and it has never happened before, so it might be the colder weather or I have received a curse.
+judah elyot I haven't had one break but after this review the left wrist joint popped off into the hand instead of staying in the wrist. Not a huge deal but annoying.
That's what started happening on one of the figures. Then like a week later, I was trying to switch out the hand and the damned thing broke. I had an extra I kept in the box, so I switched the two out, but with the others I don't have an extra so I super glued the joints on and have to be super careful when switching the hands now.
Can you please make a video showing us how to put the outfit from the black series Kylo Ren on to this SHF Kylo Ren?

I have the figure and the hands will not come off no matter how much I pull, so I'm sticking with the black series

+Matt Klevesahl hands are the bane of this sifure lol but they can be taken off. just dont use too much force. also befare with the lightsaber dont break the sides when you put it in the hands

+Duckfactory You have to take the head off to get the hood off. Just pull, it comes right off.

Are the sh figuarts and the model kit figures the same size?
Sometimes yeah, but Figuarts tend to skew a little smaller.

Where's the best place to pick these figures up?
I usually import mine from Amiami or HLJ.
The saber hilt should be hanging on the right side of the belt not left. Still I prefer this one over Black Series version.

No worries man, I was just pointing out about the saber hilt thinking that maybe Bandai could have sculpted on the wrong side of the belt. Glad to hear it can be switched over.

do you think one could use a heatgun or something like that and manipulate the hood with it, so that it looks more like in the movie?
+basketballmarco Oh yeah. I've read people doing that, but I've also read that it will revert back to it's original shape after a while.
I've seen some photos where people have done that - and it looks very good - but most of them have said that the plastic is too stiff to hold that shape. Over time the plastic slowly goes back to its original shape.

I was able to pull it off without heat, if I remember right. Or wait, it comes out at the bottom of the neck maybe? I remember it was a bear to get it back together though.
Did you just get a Snowtrooper Officer and take his shoulder pad and slap it on a regular trooper for the one in the beginning?

Senator Shockwave I definitely can be done. Same pauldron, same trooper. And I can understand not wanting the others in the pack. Hell, I didn't think wanted it until it came up for preorder the week before it released, then I jumped on it. But I'm a trooper junkie, and the Phase 2 clone was just too good to pass up.

I'm torn between getting this figure or the mafex kylo. My only worry is the quality control on the mafex one coming out. Any recommendations?
I'm already super happy with the model kit, it's just down to getting an unmasked one. I already know I should get the Figuarts one but I've got the MAFEX on pre-order. For now. Still waiting to see how more MAFEX are before committing.

What did you think of the movie?
+jackson mcgrath When I first came out of the theater I think I was a bit shellshocked. I didn't know if I liked it or not. So much to take in and think about. And it stuck with me. I thought about it. Usually I walk out of a movie satisfied and I move on to the next. But this one I had to sit on for a few days. The more I thought about it, the more I rationalized away some of the doubts I had, the more I loved it. Absolutely. All the characters, all the plot points. I want to get back to the theater and see it again.

You said the arms are difficult to pop in and out. Just the regular stiffness of the plastic or should I be worried about breaking the joint?
Shouldn't worry about breaking the joint, pretty sturdy. But it's been a while, did I pop the arms or are you talking about the hands?

ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΣΑΜΑΡΑΣ Luke is the better choice. So many options for a Kylo while Luke is pretty much the best version out there. Plus the unmasked Kylo is coming later. And I figured you meant hands but I couldn't remember if I had pulled the arms to get the cloth robe on or not, haha.
Luke will most likely be my seventh figure, and of course like I mentioned, my first import. Is there anything you should tell me to be careful about or anything really? If I get him I will let you know!
ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΣΑΜΑΡΑΣ Nothing really about Luke that is any more worrisome than any of the others. The smiley face is kind of unsettling, but really, great figure.

Great review. I had planned on having him with the hood off anyways, so that's not a deterrent for me personally. I'll have to find a tutorial on swapping the cloth on the Black series. I was sure it was glue or fixed to the figure itself. I'll wait till I have the Figuarts in hand to see if the cloak bothers me or not before I do anything permanent to the BS though.

The Fwoosh I actually talked to your buddy on facebook and he told me what to do but by the time he did I already did you have to obviously pull off the scarf and put his arms up and slide it over and be careful the chin of his helmet WILL catch on the sir coat and you have to slowly pull it through the belt if you don't cut it off which I recommend that you don't my ren looks AMAZING!!!! without it the black serie one and don't cut the belt leave it its worth it and when your done put the scarf back on that is a delecate process to remove but its not that hard JelloDemon

I apologize it's just looks so freaking cool and it's for that reason why I prefer you're videos you criticize but respect the figures but also show new way's to improve it because let's face it no figure is perfect.

Love your reviews man and this one is no different, great job! I'm torn as far as picking this guy up goes, I did not pre-order so I know it'll be more difficult and costly but I may still pull the trigger. I totally agree that the hood just looks off to me as well, but with the hood removed he looks so much better imo. The extra hands, better looking lightsaber and overall posability of the figure is what may push me over the edge. I've only got the Maul and Jedi Luke from Figuarts Star Wars line thus far but the First Order Trooper is a must get that I also didn't pre-order and will have to track down now as well (in fact I want a pair to go w my Black Series army to use for more dynamic poses). But as I said, great review as always and I appreciate the honesty of the whole hood problem, I thought it looked a little funky even before watching your review. Keep em coming!!

Your very welcome, and I am considering picking up a pair of the battle droids as well. Really anticipating the Episode 1 Obi-Wan to display with my Maul and do have one pre-ordered. I don't guess we'll ever see a 6" Qui Gon by any company which I guess is understandable considering his popularity but it would be cool just to be able to put him w Obi-Wan and Maul if only for that purpose alone. But I'm slowly making the transition to Figuarts, got my AOU Cap last summer then added Mk45, Hulk, Thor and War Machine, and just picked up my first 2 Star Wars recently w Luke and Maul. They're definitely becoming an addiction!
Eric Isner Gah, I don't even want to think about backtracking and getting the Avengers, especially now that they have shown more. Okay, that's a lie, I have thought about it, but I'm barely keeping up with Star Wars stuff at the moment.
Bandai has teased a Qui-Gon, and people have said they have seen a prototype at a show where pics weren't allowed. I would love to finish off the Duel of the Fates on the shelf.
+The Fwoosh I honestly had no intentions of getting the 5 Avengers I ended up with to be honest. I just wanted Cap cuz he's my guy when it comes to Marvel and it was my first Figuarts ever. After seeing what an incredible figure it was I figured an Ironman 45 won't hurt, then it just snowballed. But that's great news that a Qui-Gon could be a possibility, I'd definitely get him to round out that scene from episode 1. I've got a good bit of catching up do if I'm to acquire the Star Wars Figuarts that are currently available rt now if I'm to get ahead of the pre-orders yet to come. I need my income taxes like yesterday lol. But I honestly want to just stick with Star Wars Figuarts from here on out, I can't keep up with both Marvel and Star Wars and I'm glad I didn't get on the DBZ train even though they look just as good. I collect so much domestic stuff it's making it hard. I've been a completionist w Black Series minus the SDCC stuff from the start and Legends for the past few years but I may have to change that, at least w Legends and just get the figures I really want. The amount of stuff out there rt now is just never-ending!

robertgreally Yeah, I saw that Elite series one for the first time this past weekend. Looked soft and wasn't painted very well, but I couldn't help feeling jealous that we haven't seen one for any of the 6 inch scale lines.
