- Getting new S.H. Figuarts is always fun, and Bandai knocked both Kylo Ren and the long spear Praetorian Guard out of the park. Well, mostly. I knew what I was getting with the guard but Ben Solo has a couple of frustrating surprises. And the freebie BB-8 isn't bad either.

This Preatorian Guard's helmet is definitely my favorite.
Very much akin to Knights Armor.

@@benjaminburton8135 exactly, a really dumb design. Honestly, the patrol trooper from Solo is what I imagine a first order biker to look. That design screams “First Order” way more than “Empire” to me, especially that speeder. That speeder is very very first order, it doesn’t fit in at all with the empire IMO
I see the "under bite" as a call back to the older knight helmets. It looks cool to me 😁

Great Review! Definitely appreciate the info on this Kylo figure. I’m still a little undecided on if I’m going to get him. I watched someone else’s review and all they did was praise the figure..not 1 word about the wrist pegs or his slightly loose head. I still have the mafex version from earlier this year which is a great figure to me. Definitely gave me something to think about before I pull the trigger on the purchase.
Oh, I love the MAFEX, that's my main display figure for Kylo in the heavy robes and TFA look. But for the stripped down, streamlined TLJ Kylo I think this scratches that itch, faults and all.
Random thing related to the bit about not recognising things, my dad shaved his beard off when I was a kid, took about five minutes before I realised it was him....
My kids refuse to let me shave. I mean, I haven't felt the need and I'm incredibly lazy, but that's the one thing they are adamant about. And it's all because of that same thing happening when they were small. I passed that gene on, looks like.
That ring reference in the intro had me cracking up lol
I'll always remember The Ring as the movie I went to see in a little town, empty theater, and 9 nurses. Crazy.
Looking at BB8, it always amazes me how the same figure can look different depending on who made it or what version it is. Even if they are all 'screen accurate', they still look different proportion-wise or even in their details.
Yeah, you would think as simple as the design is, they'd all be closer. Nope.
I think this is so far the best 6 inch Kylo Ren. If you didn't have those QC issues with the neck I think your reaction would have been brighter. What's more, you can even make a custom robe for this one and make it look like TFA version but with better articulation.
I'm not really feeling the Praetorian Guard figures though, they're kinda cool but are quite limited and I think MAFEX has the chance to make them more fun to pose if they go with actual cloth (the black series ones that are showcased in this video do not even have human-like proportions).

You know your neck issue with Kylo is exactly the same issue I have with my Darth Maul’s right arm, as soon as I got it out the box it fell off and it looks like the joint is just too short to make a good grip, I guess sometimes S.H. Figuarts balls up like normal people

Oh yeah, never combine with a MAFEX figure, they always get pushed off.
Have you tried to put the hasbro cape to the black series? I think it would look good
Watching the film you can see Kyle does have a bit of a moustache growing so this is very accurate
It's weird when a black series figure is more detailed than a figuarts. Maybe BB-8 will eventually be a pack in with a TFA Rey and we'll get him properly detailed.
Yeah, I think Bandai just saw an opportunity for a freebie and went in on the cheap. Plus they are about two years behind the game when it comes to BB-8.

Toughie. I use the MAFEX as my TFA version, then this for TLJ. I really like both.

I have the first version and it's a bit small compared to other 6-inch figures. I like the MAFEX a lot more.
I've been having issues with new figures today too dude. I found a Goliath figure from that game Evolve and it was still in the packaging so I bought it. When I opened it, I discovered that the tab for the tail had broken off, there was a tone of paint scuffage on the torso, and a couple of the back spike clusters were missing. And then, when I tried to move the arm the peg snapped because it was partially broken. And I couldn't return it to get my 30 bucks back because I had opened it, and they basically blamed everything wrong with it on me.
That's Funko, right? They should take it back just for that fact alone. The Evolve stuff looked good but I heard a lot about breakage. And Funko, unless it's POP, usually has QC issues in some form or another.
Yeah, I heard a lot about breakage but mostly for the legs. So I was being very careful with the legs. And the thing is I recently got 2 Demogorgon figures from funko (I originally only planned to get one but Target had a regular and the limited edition chase figure) and it's fine, and the plastic is WAY thinner than the Goliath. What bugs me is that the chick was like "Well if you looked in the box you would be able to see it was broken." I was just sitting there thinking "Joints aren't exposed unless they're revoltech figures" and that when I told them I was pretty sure the peg was partially broken and my attempt to move the arm, which moved with no issue, just snappedit, they basically called me a liar.

Robo, what site did you order these off? I ordered of nippon yasan just wondered if they’re sending the Bb units out as well as I was under the impression that only certain sites were doing it. I need a bb8 in my collection and was hoping these ones would fit in with my collection haha
I grabbed this from Amiami. They were listed separate too but I did the listing that specifically listed both and BB-8. It seems to go really fast.

Robo, actually this ”underbite” helmet seems to be heavily influenced by actual late medieval armets (a sort of a helmet used in battle and in joust) so if they aimed at a ”knightly” style, this one makes most sense of them all.
And now you make me want to see two of these guys on speeders jousting. Or Banthas! Or I just want Banthas...

Hmm I think when it comes to the Kylo's face, I prefer Black series in terms of sculpt, but then the paint applications look far better on the SH Figuarts one...
...Still waiting on the Black Series digital paint apps though!

I'm not sure. It's a harder plastic so heat doesn't help much. It's that the socket isn't deep enough, I think.
couldn't those helmet holding hands also be like kylo ren's lightsaber hands when he is about to push the buttom to activate the lightsaber?, great review by the way dude, I've already bought the new figuarts Kylo Ren for my stop motions :)

My set is underway and now I'm dreading it because of the hands situation. .... I honestly don't get why Figuarts doesn't settle on a 'peg technology' . Sometimes they get it perfectly right , like with the Scarif trooper and Death trooper: easily removable hands but secure fits and sometimes it's like microsurgery combined with dark magic to switch the hands out 🙄
Right, exactly. I know those parts may be based on an older figure from a couple of years ago, but that's doesn't mean they had to use an inflexible material to make them. The guards nail it.
The Fwoosh I just got my Kylo in and treaded with care concerning the hands. After holding the wrists under a hot tap and soaking the hands in hot water, everything went swimmingly. They pop on and off with ease and you'll find that the hands are much more pliable after a nice soak. Love the figure immensely, it's just a shame about his loosey head.
So what happened to the head when it was still in box? Put on backwards? Moved?.
It was just pulled off. It doesn't stick on there very good so it just shook around until it turned, I guess.

just so you know Bandai does monochrome boxart for all of their online exclusive stuff. P-Bandai Gundam model kits as one example always have monochrome boxart.

exactly. but Premium Bandai products like that do usually end up at second hand thrift stores and such in Japan. so sometimes you might find them on shelves if you know what stores to go to in Japan.
2 questions. Can you maybe add a little bit of polymer clay or sticky tack inside the neck to get a slightly better grip?? And if you heat up the hands and put them on one of the tree holder/hand holder thingies that come with some of the other SHF figures (Bruce Lee), would that make the hands easier to interchange as they would cool down already on a peg??
The Kylo looks cool, but the guards look better to me in the Black Series plus a better price. Also Kylo needs a cape!! He's not on the same level of cool as Grandpa!! 😂
Maybe something can be added to the neck, but it may be difficult with how deep it is in the torso. Lots of places for something to just slip out of the way and into other parts. And that's probably a great idea with the hands. Or take a slightly larger drill bit and just slowly turn it with your fingers, open it up a tiny bit. And agree, I'm kind of gravitating towards the SWBS guard too.
Is the bb8 not taken more or less from the model kit sculpt?
Naw, huge differences in the sculpt. I think even though they are both Bandai the Figuarts and model divisions are two completely different animals.

hey fwoosh, can you exchange the upper torso for this kylo to the force awaken kylo? i had that one back then but i sold it and i know that one has more room for torso articulation..thx in advance
Not sure if you can but if it does, the top and bottom wouldn't match because of the different tunics.

They look good! Now without being too critical to SHF, as I'm a big fan, but there wasn't a huge deal of difference in the face of that when compared to the unmasked BS version. So, do SHF need to step up their game some more, or are BS just getting better? Can SHF step up their game more, I don't know how much better printing tech can get?

At first I wasn't thrilled about not getting the extra BB units but that BB-8 honestly looks terrible. Bandai would have done better to spend a bit more money and release a four pack with all four of the BB's with better everything for $80 or something. It's too bad, R2-D2 was a great figure but these BB droids look like cheap after-thoughts.
Cheap after-thoughts are exactly what they are. I can't help but think they threw them in just to sell more reuse figures with slight changes. The troopers, the Phasma, the Praetorian three times. Kylo is mostly new and then there is Rey.
Man, Figuarts is pushing those praetorian guards! They better do something in this movie. I'm down for Kylo, though, I skipped the Black Series one thinking that a better version will be coming out. Either this, or the Walmart deluxe version. You going to review that one?

I'm not sure about the Walmart Kylo now that I have this one. I skipped the first SWBS Kylo in favor of the WM set, but ended up with it anyway. I did see the Rey TRU set yesterday and it looks better than the single release. If they do the same for Kylo I may have to get it.

It kinda bums me out how Kylo didn’t get a cape, but I don’t know how they would’ve handled it, it probably would have been a big mostly useless chunk of plastic.
I hate those off center wrist holes o n Star Wars figuarts.....so frustrating! The guard robes in rubber/plastic always look like banana peels to me when posed in action stances.....I think I want that kylo.
Haha, yeah, like they're wearing aluminum siding. It's the biggest problem I had with the first Kylo but it doesn't bother me too much on the guards. Well, that and they didn't do the same floating waist as that Kylo, that was another nail in that coffin.

Rey is the one I am most excited about too.
Yeah, it's going to be super interesting to see how she turns out. And it should be after the movie and I'll be in full-on Star Wars freak mode. Well, more than usual.
I think my freak mode will start as soon as the calendar flips to December. I will be tuned in to see how SHF Rey Sizes up with the MAFEX Rey.

I swear tamashii is getting lazy with paint and line work. For some reason their face tech seems way off as of late. And fyi the Mezco Aquaman is 5.9" just like Thor. Are they sticking with figuarts scaling for movie figs?
