“Dress your age” is such a fuddy duddy concept. I’m 35 and started wearing band tees again and didn’t realize how much I was limiting myself. I’m having more fun now in my 30s than I have been in a long time.
I'm 63, and my style tends to be understated and timeless, but definitely enjoyed this positive video: the open-minded attitude and easygoing vibe are a breath of fresh air.
A lot of my favorite winter tops are women wear, im short and they always seem to have the right length and fit. A lot of the budget brands always go super long for mens clothes for some reason.
100% never dress my age lol. I love wearing much smarter outfits and I’m 19. I also sometimes completely switch and like a casual outfit, I hate being constrained to one style
Appreciate your input on that comment about “age appropriate style”. Wear what you love especially if you feel confident about it and make you feel totally alive.
Hard "no" on not matching leathers. I think it does look out of place, and i could let it fly in casual outfit, or with more decorative/unique leathers (like snake skin etc), i'd still try to closely match the tone. In formal setup? Always matching leathers
the thing i like about your channel is that even though we have completely different styles i can still watch your videos and learn something that i can use myself
Glad the "dress your age"-thing is mentioned. There's a lot of content out there about "how to dress as a man 40+" etc. and I find them all so generic and boring. Like, everyone should look like a bank employee or wannabe-millionare and only wearing "classy styles" in order to be taken seriously by your peers etc...I'm 42 and I think avoiding bad fitting clothes is actually the only thing you will not get away with anymore once you hit a certain age. The rest is pretty much - as always - the attitude/how your wear something and if that outfit is really you or not.
THANK YOU for the dressing for your age words! So many vloggers have a ridiculous opinion about this and being 57 and a lover of style, I agree with you: I care way less these days about other’s opinions about what I like to wear and it’s very freeing. I like what I like and I try to wear things that are comfortable yet stylish when I’m going out. Great video! ❤
Proper appreciating opening the boundaries to fashion, in that it's not what everyone is wearing, or what you 'should' be wearing, but celebrating your own instincts and individuality. I see the 'older person dressing young' barb a lot, and in TH-cam fashion terms a few scathing US channels in that regard. I love it when some dresses to their personality, if anything it's a great idea of their character, and conversation.
I really appreciate your advice. I’m 62 and pretty conservative in my attire, but that’s my personal preference. I truly feel that one should wear what they enjoy, you are the one wearing it, do what makes you feel good! Thanks for “coloring outside of the lines!” Great advice!
Hey James , I thought it would be really cool if you can do more fashion analysis from movies/series like the succession or the bear videos , I find them really enjoyable to watch , much love ❤
@@JamesLeungthe Gentleman movie is also top notch when it comes to fashion, a bit more on the elegant side but some fits in it are really well thought if you wanna check it out
Men's jewelry tends to be extremely conservative with very few pieces. When all you have is a silver watch and a gold chain it looks a bit odd. It doesnt help that men's formalwear and suits have a limited color palette but that's another discussion.
Great video and interesting perspective. I think the most important aspect of your message is be intentional with your choices and understand why one should bend or outright break any supposed rules.
I really like your balanced attitude to style, especially the silly gender specific rule. I opened an old suitcase recently and found a great denim striped Zara Men blazer my ex bf must have overlooked when he left. Poor him! It’s a men’s size M on my women’s size S frame and is perfectly oversized, with the sleeves casually rolled up. Last night while waiting for my uber home from the movies, a guy told me I looked really beautiful! I wasn’t even trying: the ‘ oversized’ denim men’s blazer, super baggy white Uniqlo jeans, a black vest, NB 530s and a dash of red lippy. My cab arrived suddenly, so sadly for him, I didn’t have time to give him my number. Sorry random guy, but I’d been ill n bed for a week before and you made my week! Thank you😊 Clothes are just clothes. Wear what makes you feel good- Age, gender and matchy-ness are daft constructs❤
Love your videos James. I am a woman and always enjoy your style. I have always mixed things up - smart and casual, metals etc. I don’t do matchy matchy anything. Thanks for another one🙏🏼
Another great video James. I wear my trousers with a break by the ankle. I’m 5ft6 so I often have to roll up my trousers anyway as they happen to be a bit long (and drag against the floor) for me. All the other things you mentioned were great too. Have a good day. ✌️
I don't know, a lot of these just seem more or less pointness. Like these aren't really "rules" more just "hedging your bets". Like yes you don't need to match metals but over 50% of the time you're going to look better with matching metals. So it's less so of a rule and more knowing when it works and when you can do something different.
Thanks for the video! But I'm not so agree with mixing leathers and metals. I highly recommend you to shoot your videos with the rule of thirds (in this video for example, you could have a invisible line crossing your eyes), it's much more aesthetic. And avoid to have lines crossing you in the background as well (or align them on thirds), in the set up of this video, I would use a framing with the bottom of the painting behind you align to your shoulders (maybe with using a stool). Cheers.
The dressing your age part should really speak into people's mindset as they're growing up. Who care about what other people think honestly? If you do, you're spending too much time on social media and consuming too much of what these influences are saying. Just be smart about you wear and what makes you feel confident and comfortable I think are the most important parts.
No! You should throw away your clothes every few years and buy new shit that will be outdated again in a few years. You don't want to be outdated, do you?
Such a beautiful accent! Is this typical of Wales? Your content is delivered with a subtle shine due to this not-quite-placeable blend of lilting vowels and crisp consonants. Nice content too, btw, and I enjoy the styling of your space as well -- floral lamp and monstera leaves hurrah!
I always find it funny when someone compliments me on a piece of clothing and ask about it and I say it's from the Women's section, I had a boss a while ago who would lower her voice when asking about it, she was way older than me but I always found that funny. On topic though, I've always taken these as mostly guidelines rather than rules, especially for people who are just getting into actually dressing themselves, cuz oh MAN was it baffling when a LOT of guys would approach us back when I worked retail and they didn't even know their own clothing sizes, and it wasn't just the older folk.
I've never followed the no socks with sandals rule. It can be a comfortable wear if the socks are short, or the pants are long. Long socks with sandals and shorts is definitely out.
Really consider what you like and don't consider what society wants you to do, do that and you'll be a lot happier with how you dress. Society likes to limit the expression of self.
The mature thing is funny because when I was around 17-18 I heard that a lot and tried to change my style to fit in with being more mature now that I’m an adult. (So dumb. 😂) but I wasn’t feeling it and went back to wearing what I liked and slowly as I gotten older my style has gotten more mature but it wasn’t because I was actively thinking about it but because certain types of clothing appeal to me more now that I’m older.
Never ever heard about jeans and shoes. Must be a Brits only thing. Blue jeans and loafers or the our legacy camion boots are just hitting differently.
Western style is not a color. However, western belts, if not oversized, can work if you are also wearing western inspired boots (match your leather, ha!) with non-western pants within reason. Too Western and you look like a cowboy costume, a bit of western can fit in with mid-casual clothes to add a touch of Western and not an oversaturation. You can look more Western in the country, but tone it down in the city. A point that is often made by those you are critical of, which you seem to close your ear to, is "Know the rules, then break the rules." Once you know the rules and understand why, then you can break them to a point without looking garrish. And yes, some are now outdated like the old English, "No brown in town", referring to both shoes and suits. Many "women's" clothing was first worn by men and women "stole" the look in order to try to pass as men during a time when women had less rights. Today, women get completely away with dressing 100% as a man (sneakers, jeans, t-shirts, baseball hat) and no one says they are gender bending. Men in early cultures didn't wear pants but rather things equal to today's skirts and dresses. If men want to do the same and still be seen as men, then they need to do it as women do; your girlfriend may dress like a man, may even have short hair, but doesn't bind her breast flat, pad her underwear and put on a fake beard. Be trans if trans, but if not, then wear female clothes in a manly way just as women wear male clothes in a womanly way.
Experimentation and pushing back on conventional fashion wisdom is a great thing to do, but can itself come off as contrived if done simply for the sake of being different. When it comes to personal style, there is only one rule: be authentic. Dress in a way that makes you feel good about how you look and function in your clothes.
Hey James, what's your thoughts on the Bleu de Chauffe clothes sizing? Recently tried the Germinal jacket in S and liked the fit (also 140 lbs, 5'10").
You gotta get the brands right before they blow because once they become popular; quality goes down, price goes up, production moves to third world country, popular pieces are recycled to ad nauseam. Soon as I’m complimented by a random teenager at the gas station, I know it’s over LOL. (Nothing against young people btw)
My personal outdated fashion tip is that you can't have oversized shirts with baggy pants. Personally I had a skater passion in middle school and the free flowing, casual, comfortable style was always a love I had
When influencers say you should dress your age, they're saying you *shouldn't* still like wearing band tees. They're criticizing what they see as bad personal taste and low maturity level.
It's a matter of opinion...I think plain tees just look more adultlike. But that's only if you care about that. My dad's almost 80 and still wears the most obnoxious band tees you've ever seen, and he loves it. I (and everyone else) think he looks ridiculous, but I don't think he cares.
your thing around age though is kinda right. like as much as you might be wanting to fight sterotyping but people never sit and ask why exactly do these exist? Well in the case of older people when you walk around in joggers you just look like you're insecure of your own age. The sort of people who can't accept they are old.
I've noticed that most of the people telling us what is age appropriate, aren't of an age to be advocating these rules. There's a 'f#*k it' sprezzatura I'm wearing the older I get and I'm not letting that go anytime soon!.
Some cool socks and sandals in warmer weather work for me. I live in NYC, and summers can get very nasty! I REFUSE to have my bare feet exposed to the filthy elements of NYC!
my only thing about inseam length is that highly tapered trousers look bad stacking heavily around the ankle. one break is fine but more just ruins whatever streamlined effect the taper was going for. people I see doing this never have interesting outfits either, so it just looks like they dont know how to dress. everything else is fine.

Yes- you can definitely get away with looser fit tops or jumpers for women, but trousers and jeans.. they are cut SO differently from their men's counterparts, they just add a feminine shape to men's builds, to my eye anyway.
Can I ask what size 501s you wear? I’m around 5’8 and find the 501s often end up looking more like flares or bootcut jeans on my legs, especially when compared to you or other creators online. Is there any way I can get around this issue?
You see this on alot of mens fashion sub reddits and its exhausting, if you think it looks good and you wear it with confidence its okay to bend the "rules" a bit.

dont think anything should be outdated but maybe the beton cire hats are
I’ve never tried one of those!
@@JamesLeung they’re great but yeah sorta out of trend now I’m sure you see them in Germany still 😍
Can I ask what size 501s you wear? I’m around 5’8 and find the 501s often end up looking more like flares or bootcut jeans on my legs, especially when compared to you or other creators online. Is there any way I can get around this issue?
I do agree with a lot of what you've said but socks and sandals are just an abomination and an insult to the eye. 😧
Haha fair point, I can see why people don’t like it!
@@JamesLeung 😊👍

You see this on alot of mens fashion sub reddits and its exhausting, if you think it looks good and you wear it with confidence its okay to bend the "rules" a bit.
Also womens trousers top tier
Hell yes!
What is the striped t-shirt you’re wearing as narrator?

Funny thing is there's nothing more outdated than baggy clothes. The looks is straight out of Friends.
On the flip side what is age appropriate clothing? No one has ever answered that.

2:36 A lot of people complain about them actually. They are widely regarded as undesirable and tacky
