I think you are missing the meaning of the word “brand”. It is all in the image and reputation. Those aren’t earned through actual products. They are all strategic purposely market positioning paid highly through advertising.
That's because you don't understand the meaning of timeless. LV started with their luggage and their logo became synonymous with luxury and elegance. The luggage and their neverfulls ARE timeless, it is a constant best seller. The empreinte bags, the capucines, and the wallet on chains are timeless and became more popular over the years. They can afford to do tacky street wear because they cemented their place in the luxury world
And he's actioning a fashiontastic job. His unique twist on freshing up the brand with exquisite craftsmanship and "WOW" he has added a little more revitalising "tonic" to the brand, and it is still not cheap.
@@sew_gal7340 But everyone that collects LV luggage and such collects vintage products and swears the new products are trash. It's not timeless unless you can maintain quality.
This video is a bit of an exaggeration. Most luxury brand are heading to the discount rack as the middle class evaporates. Most buyers were middle class consumers and not so much wealthy consumers. No middle class less retail, especially high-end. The middle class went into debt for high-end brands. Everyone is shopping on Temu because middle class is almost non-existent.
That’s what happens when you break the family unit and turn people into consumer drones and numbers, eventually they become broke and even stop reproducing
LMVH hit record stock market prices in the last 2 years. It’s not just Americans and Europeans who buy luxury brands, think about all the wealthy Chinese that are into European luxury brands
@@RilowsChinese buyers definitely made up a HUGE percentage of luxury buyers - those people have no problem covering their bodies in logos. It’s weird.
Yves Saint Laurent was actually Kering's biggest earner, but pop culture hyped Gucci, and with Tom Ford's effort to rejuvenate the brand, Gucci became popular amongst the general public. I don't think they really care to reestablish Gucci's luxurious exclusivity because, remember, the middle and lower class purchase more than the upper class. As such, they earn more profit that way. Sure, it may tarnish brand perception, but earning a gross amount of 7.1 billion on average within a year is no easy feat. I don't think Gucci can be considered true luxury anymore, and I don't think that's Kering's objective to begin with. I'd argue LVMH followed a similar path with Louis Vuitton that Kering did with Gucci, except LVMH has way more brands to rely on, if one fails; Kering isn't able to do the same.
This is VERY INSIGHTFUL and by far a comment that most reflective of what I see in real life. Thank you. Louis Vuitton has gone super tacky to grab super cash before Virgil Abloh who sadly passed way too soon. There seems to be some promise with the improvements in quality - if not design - under Pharrell Williams
Wherever I think of Gucci I think of my mother wearing it in the 1970s, her pieces were amazing and fueled my love for timeless quality garments and apparel over fashion. Which is why I love the designer second hand market, but do purchase some new items that I can't walk past. I still use my mothers 70s Cartier bag, and have recently purchased a preloved Marc Jacob's quilted leather bag.The style and quality made me buy it.😊
These brands were never intended for people who could not afford to waste money. Unfortunately most people who buy these brands today can't afford to pay their rent.
Expensive brands are always a waste of money. But, now, the looting and shooting, have taken showing off -- off the charts, exasperating and hindering soul's safety in stores of high-class.
Sad that it is now just the name of the designer that's the actual fashion instead of what the name use to stand for which was high quality. I think things started going down hill about the early 2000's
I work in social services and I come across clients who are receiving aid in the form of public housing, unemployment benefits and food stamps, yet they still manage to come into the office, wearing Gucci, Balenciaga and Air Jordans. I had a bf who was in construction. He told me that Vice Presidents in construction are always the son or nephew of the owner. I knew a guy who was VP and the owner was his uncle. He’d randomly get $5-20k bonuses at work. He had a long term gf, he’d buy her luxury items, “pop and return” (his words) some, but she kept plenty. She ended up getting pregnant. Since she wasn’t married and was a student she qualified for food stamps and WIC. She literally paid for her food with her wic card taken from her Gucci wallet in her LV purse. Anyway the company went under within a year because the uncle was indicted for bribery and falsifying work.
LVMH and Kering just give off the vibe that they want to own everything, a lot of their brands have started to gain a tacky reputation because of the overuse of logos (the former LV and the latter Gucci). Richemont seems like the only other conglomerate that doesn’t have these issues, all of the brands they own still retain their prestige.
It’s about the fall of Gucci. Gucci was higher in the ranking one or two years ago. LV has been on the bottom for ages now. So yeah, Guccis performed worse than LV as LV decline isn’t as big.
All the fashion brands owned by big conglomerates have their issues. It would be more interesting to compare them to independent designers or brands that are on the rise.
Not only Gucci , Lagerfeld is done, Versace in TK Maxx, long ago Armani falled down and is associated with cheapness, Tommi Hilfiger, CK , valentino as well etc
4:42 =Amen... When you buy Luxury, it has to be something that is so unique that its a standout or so classic (elegant, minimalist and formal) that it isn't affected by trends that change.

Gucci made a lot of sales while they were trying to promote with young people with casual styles. People just saw their short term sucess back then, but in reality it cheapened the brand and that has long term implications.
It all depends on what you buy. I feel all luxury brands have tacky over the top items. I have some great items from Gucci that I love. There’s also tons of stuff there I would never buy. 😊
Another problem was the rappers. They all made people want to wear gucci since they always set the trend being artists of a mega popular genre. What happened after that? The fake industry polluted the market. You would not be able to differentiate between the original and the fake. That always devaluate products.
This is cope. The "discount rack" is always just the tees and giant logo handbags and other miscellaneous stuff, or even the basic low top shoe with the bee logo. The regular high end pieces you wouldn't even be able to identify as Gucci unless you were super familiar with the brand that go for thousands are still in line with every one of these other high end fashion houses.
Indeed. But it was accessories and the vision that “everybody should be able to buy something from a luxury brand”, like LV and Gucci, that has watered down the brands. Both brands sell a very limited amount of clothing.
Asian here. In where i live what so called Show-off culture is a big thing. It elevates status symbol amongst the commoners. It happens not just in Asia but also in Africa, south America and even the Balkans. Instead of buying a suit those people will buy a T shirt with biggest designers name. It happens the same with cars and houses too. Instead of buying a house with big garden, landscape for maximum privacy people tend to buy ridiculous tacky neo classical houses in high population area just for show off.
Interestingly many comments in here don’t talk about this. Asian consumption of these designers is one big factor. Just about every cool kid, mom, dad, street hustler, grandma and grandpa are wearing Gucci and the likes. From an over saturated point of view it couldn’t be more obvious in why the brand has fallen from grace. The Asian market has slowed down. It’s not just rappers or gang bangers making Gucci ‘uncool’ or tacky.
I rarely see really wealthy people wearing these brands. I see different levels of middle class people who complain the rising prices at McDonald's wearing and wanting this stuff

Exactly. LVMH has fragrances, hotels, makeup, fashion, jewelry, alcohol beverages among other products... Is a different sort of company than Kering, which is mostly fashion with some luxury jewelry brands.
It’s a tacky brand, in America it’s essentially what the poor wear when they get money and want to show off. The quality looks terrible and the people that wear it aren’t exactly what you want to emulate.
once every single influencer had gucci it wasn't a commodity anymore. i also think harry styles wearing gucci for every single outfit in 2017 and 2018 overexposed the brand after a while.
pretty sure they don't have discount rack, any unsold merchandise left at end of season are destroyed and disposed of. I've worked at shopping centre with loads of high end outlets, at start of new season when new stock arrived the staff cuts up a mountain of leather shoes and handbags and fill up a trash compactor. The high price is part of the branding they are selling.
I think the problem is its association with hip hop streetwear rather than designer fashion. Nothing wrong with that necessarily, just not the same kind of luxury it used to be.
I feel like every single brand that was featured in this video gets name checked in hip hop though. So if it’s happening to all of them, it doesn’t make sense that Gucci is the only one to have its sales fall off a cliff. There has to be another variable.
Tom Ford's Gucci was slick and sophisticated. He brought it back from a tacky era. Because Gen Z spends money on tech and not high-end designer clothes, shoes, bags, etc. Because Gen Y (aka Mills) are too broke & Gen X is in so much debt because they bought all the Gucci.
I can assure Gen X was the last one bought Italian made brands one fifth of today's prices... Their brands spending just got wasted on projects that didn't retain Long Term Customer Values... Such as loyalty that most hotel brands nurture for lifelong repeat purchases.. Accor I think is the most advanced in terms of understanding LTCV..
Gen Z is literally known as the brand-obsessed/designer-obsessed generation. They have been buying this stuff and more. And why? Because they don't see any point in saving for a home they don't think they will ever afford.
@@venus_envy I would say they're the most brainwashed generation out of social media from a very young age. So psychologically they watched too many things not supposed to be on their radars.. Today if one just signed up on FB the first thing to see was a child and adult hands in questionable positions.. That's how morally bankrupt the media world we are living in today. Blame rappers. Remember back in the day they hated when rappers wore their clothes. People said they were racist. It makes sense why they didn't want to associate with rap now. Made them gaudy and tacky
I believe they mean the sales missed their estimated targets in financial planning. A company establishes sales goals they aim to reach with their design & marketing to sustain the business with profits. If they continually miss their targets sales, their profitability continues to drop. Does that help?

The secret is out. Designer bags are manufactured in China. The brand pays between $56-$100 to produce a bag which then sells for $1500-$2500! That's why the fakes are so popular. They're made by the same manufacturers, but you pay a fraction of the retail price. It's all brand marketing. That's what you're really paying for, not a high quality bag.
Gucci is doing fine. Not everyone into Gucci but Gucci has a worldwide consumers base, and always will. Primark choke the market with cheap fashion, followed by their asian cousins Shein, Temu and more. Fashion palate is not stated by class anymore, its individual taste.
Nothing lasts forever. Everything moves in cycles. Gucci is no exception. Values in society are changing, especially among Gen Z. They are much less materialistic and focus more on life experience rather than accumulating "stuff". Don't be surprised that the luxury fashion brands no longer exist 100 years from now, maybe sooner.

Once you started seeing "regular" people wearing Gucci and LV, you know the brand has been cheapened. Heck even BMW and Mercedes has been falling into that category for a while.

The abrupt shift they made resulted in a loss of their current customers and skeptical looks from other luxury brands enthusiast .

0:28 to 0:36 is correct, but the context you have given is absolutely not correct. They are not dropping because of image issues. China is in the mids of what is essentialy a recession, investments of middle and upper class in China are mostly houses and apartaments. And those dropped tremendously, that makes Chinese wary of spending their savings, it makes them wary of spluring on a Gucci bag. The same is happening in premium quality alcohols, in Luis Vuitton, Dior, and many many others.
Absolutely. PRC buyers make a huge difference. During Covid my local Hermes expanded with an exquisite wooden staircase spiraling up the center! I asked a sales clerk why did we need such a big store. He said it's the biggest in the nation because PRC tourists come in buses and buy armloads of handbags at a time (20-30 per customer). I asked the lonely sales clerks at YSL, Valentino and Brunello Cuccinelli within a half block radius of Hermes how many visitors entered the store that day. I was the only one at YSL and one of two at BC, but when PRC tourists return they look forward to being sold out every week. Rolex and Patek Philippe put up construction barriers for their new stores one block away from Hermes. They never opened. The RealReal opened a classy store (with coffee and pastries just like in a Tokyo boutique) and then closed it in less than 2 years. It's 2024 and the PRC tourists have not returned.

Calling Louis Vuitton timeless when they've done multiple streetwear collabs and their men's creative director is freaking Pharell is just clueless...

Indeed. But it was accessories and the vision that “everybody should be able to buy something from a luxury brand”, like LV and Gucci, that has watered down the brands. Both brands sell a very limited amount of clothing.

I live in the Middle East and travel a lot to Asia, it’s outstanding the hype for luxury brands in here.
I’ll never understand this market
It’s called a lack of class and depending on outward signifiers of wealth to make yourself feel artificially superior to others.
