Suzuki Jimny 5-door Review: Better than the 3-Door?

  • Suzuki has just added the 5-door version of its unbelievably popular Jimny to the local lineup. It offer more doors (obviously) and more packing space for people and things.
Does the bigger body fix any of the other issues with the Jimny such as body roll, the on-road driving experience or how it sways in the wind? Ciro tackles those issues as well as if the bigger Jimny needs a better engine.
Leave your thoughts on which Jimny you would have below or if you'd have something completely different.

Would be awesome to do an off road comparison between some of the big players in the offroad fraternity: a few bakkies, Ranger, Hilux, then some others, Fortuner, Everest, LC79, LC200, Discovery, Defender, Wrangler, Jimny, etc. Atlantis Dunes would be perfect, maybe some other trails too

It's not only in Cape Town, I used to see it everyday in Centurion and I still see them in Midrand, Personally I like the 3-door model, it's looks funky and cool, the car makes you smile inside, it's like that tiny dog that runs to every stranger waggling it's tail every time you enter someone's yard, you just wanna take it with you.

Hi , from India . This is the only car I smile everytime I get in . Not even a car double its price can match it . This is the classic quality swiss knife of cars. This is going to be the car you will never think about selling off to buy some other one

Well, when the 5 door came to my country I had to think about selling my 3 door, it was a hard decision, so hard that I kept them both.
Now my parents have a 3 door Jimny to run errands (senior citizens), because I traded THEIR car for the 5 door.

That statement is true for a lot of cars, fortuner, d-max, p series, mux all of those big suvs and bakkies almost never even see a gravel road. and dont even start with the land cruiser 300, the range rovers, the g wagons, they are lucky if they go on slightly damp grass

The suspension can be fixed quite easily with a set of Bilstein shock absorbers for R10k.
I fitted them to my 3 door and it transformed the handling, ride quality and safety. The steering feels crisper with less body roll.
As for the performance, fit a throttle controller for R2k and you have fixed the two major issues with the car for not a lot of money!
Avoid fitting the roof rack unless you have a use for it as it aggravates the handling issues and increases the fuel consumption.
Unfortunately the Jimnys are being targeted by criminals for the contents of the car (not the car itself) as they easy to break into. The Jimny doesn’t have an alarm, only an immobilizer. My car was broken in to and it took them 65 seconds including parking their car next to mine and reversing out.

I'm like a lot of people in the city: no kids, no pets, apartment with a small parking space, and I rarely leave the CBD. Something small, (relatively) cheap, and hella durable makes sense if you have no interest in driving dynamics and like the style.

I’m a 22 year old third year and these are everywhere at school. These are especially popular with us youngins because it’s one of those vehicles that you have to put a lot of aftermarket love into, which makes it more personal. Plus at this age we just want to something reliable and affordable to get us to jol easier.

I had 3 Suzukis. An LJ, a Samurai and a Sidekick. I really enjoyed all of them and not one gave me any problems while I owned them. Plus, I always drive less than the speed limit so they all fit my driving style. Lastly, Canada has 7 months of winter and those vehicles all performed flawlessly on snow and ice.

It's so interesting how you keep saying that it's narrow, and it is. But I'm a 185cm afrikaner I find it more spacious than a jeep wrangler. The Jimny is ok, but the Jeep is too small inside for me.

    Thanks for another great production!
I'm in the second week of driving our GLX XL automatic, same colour as in video, the urban fuel consumption is just over 10L, thats not worth the second con ....the price...... We do have a Front Runner roof rack & ladder, side steps and wheel case being added in two weeks.
I get the cute factor my mum saw however if you shopping with price in mind +-R530k..... please consider all other options, second hand bakkie or bakkie based SUV for off road, if you want to save fuel then the Corolla Cross hybrid varients...you could even get a Polo GTI for that price.
My 2017 Polo GTI with mods averaged 7.2L
Great vehicle to look at, not great to drive daily especially with an all round lack of power, 75kw & a 4speed auto 😢

I get that people are getting them and not using them as intended but its maybe the point..that it could be used like that its capable of that but in a small city daily driver type car. But then again the Fiat panda 4x4 exists so here we can say its being trendy because it definately aint cheap. I do like them tho especially in that Launch avo colour.

My dad and I were in the market for a car at the same time. 4x4, low range, can handle the rough stuff. He generally carries 2 people on a trip, but sometimes in his Tiguan caries 4 plus luggage on a long trip. I was replacing a Grand Vitara he was replacing a 2009 Jimny.
I tried my hardest to convince him to replace his Tiguan and his Jimny with one vehicle.
I ended up buying a Scorpio N Z8, he settled for the Jimny. I got mine on a Black November deal, and guess what! I paid less for the Scorpio N than a Jimny! I cant even imagine this!!!
Of course there are so many dynamics at play but just think about that. A 7 seater family SUV for the same price as a Jimny. Its truly amazing.
Jimny has done something right. Good on them! I just can't understand it 😂

i agree with Ciro's sentiments, to add to it ive had people justify their Jimny purchase because roads have potholes, therefore they must have a Jimny😂. Look its a good offroad car but not great in the city and there is no way to slice it, but it makes people happy so more power to them. You know what other Suzuki car makes people happy? An Ignis, you guys should review one. Swift Sport's too but in another way and wish you guys would review that as well😊.

Many poorer developed countries need such vehicles, as most products out there are wide body and sloped front windshields, which is bummer if to many drivers cut in front of you and you have to drive thru muddy part of the road from time to time. Visibilty in modern vehicles are constrained, whereas in older square shaped ones are simple and can wage dimensions easily.

My mom is in the Jimny gang 😂 I totally agree with Ciro's review. You can't use it as a mall crawler coz the boot is too small. You can't use it on 'big roads' coz it provides a near death experience when being overtaken. And you can't go much faster than 100kmh so you will be overtaken often. And whenever you ask to use it on the 4x4 sand track to take the dogs to the beach you will be told to "voggof". But it does look nice and cost R500k.

Driving a Jimny in New Zealand is easy, you won’t get ambushed at the robot. 😂. The Highway speed limit here is only 100km/h and 90km/h so I couldn’t imagine driving 120km/h on the highway (or 140-160 as most do in SA). A Jimny would still be a great lifestyle vehicle in SA.
The reason it’s so narrow is due to it’s heritage as a kei car in Japan.
The first (sold out) shipment of 500 5dr autos have arrived in NZ and the next shipment of 5drs only arrives in September and will probably sell out.

Ciro, I don't get why you're a bit negative about this vehicle in the beginning.
Let me try explain why the Jimny is such a success (my point of view) - firstly it's fairly simple, not quite basic, not perfect but not flawed. It's built for a purpose and from what I see it's quite robust.
The drivetrain is built as it is to keep running costs low. It may not be fast but it's not supposed to be.
It may not be that great on the road but you've got to understand that those who purchase the Jimny know this but don't really care about that.
There are certainly a lot around, no matter what anyone says about the Jimny, they're selling.
That shows that customers will buy and not necessarily be swayed by opinion.

Ciro will reply but we felt the criticism was fair, but of course we appreciate your opinion and thank you for supporting the channel. And Ciro is genuinely happy for people who have Jimnys and are loving them for whatever reason :)

This is the first review that has really made me realise, it's best I rethink this option. I would brush off the common concern with driving bends and motorways in other reviews but actually seeing it play out, makes a difference lol. There are too many windy roads where I am that I don't want to risk it. My arse would get a good work out tensing up on my daily drives lol

I drove my friend's new Jimny. it's cute but one of the few cars where i just did not enjoy driving it. It was just a couple of suburban km's and i was driving in old lady mode, but couldnt wait to park it. Soft, bouncy.... and yet a rough, hard ride - very confusing.

Yeah, I'm over Jimnys now and super keen on the Ineos Grenadier! Big switch but well worth it.
Also, off topic, but you should see how the old lady's in my area drive. They tail gate you here, whereas the old men just cruise at tortoise speed. It's hilarious.

I cruised at 120 kmph on a 500 km trip. No issues. Cornering is supposed to be slower than that in any case. Went on another 200 km highway trip with the car full 335 kg payload limit. On the highway. No issues. I don't know what you are talking about, honestly. Hitting higher speeds a few seconds faster is more useless than . Also, these speeds you speak of are above speed limits and safe driving limits in any case, so it doesn't hold water. There's nothing critical missing in it, not even in the dashboard, and it can go to very many more places than non 4×4 other cars. And, I am 6 ft tall, the head didn't bumb in the back. And, in this car, you go through pot holes, not avoid it :-)

Unless you want the off road stuff there is just so many better cars for daily communing. I mean you are talking Corolla Cross Money here. Or if you are looking for something by Suzuki, then the new Grand Vitara is better then this thing for R100k less. But obviously it looks cool. I mean people are still paying R3mil plus for a R1mil G wagon so coolness I assume plays a massive role with these type of cars.

Life is too short to drive a car based on being rational - like with your C63 Ciero ;) . Same as Wrangler - it does not make sense, and it is not the best car for city etc. But still, Wrangler drivers love their ride - so Jimny all the way. And as far as I know, there might be a mild Hybrid Jimny coming. That would then be an option for sure

Unfortunately the Jimnys are banned due to emissions in UK/ Europe so your market is getting all the Jimnys we can’t. When this new model came out I thought they’d be this popular here but Suzuki couldn’t make them quick enough before the emissions rules changed. The only way we can get them are as ‘vans’ as commercial vehicles have different regulations. The only van thing is the rear seats aren’t fitted but that means they’re not that useful for the average buyer.
