Description:
Welcome back to LowRangeNick! It’s been a year since I first laid my hands on the Suzuki Jimny JB74, and what a year it has been! In this in-depth review, I’ll be taking you through my 12-month journey with this off-roading icon. Whether you're thinking about getting one or already own a Jimny, this comprehensive breakdown will give you all the insights you need. I’ll discuss what I love about this beast and where it could use some improvement, all from the perspective of a passionate Jimny owner.
1-Year Jimny JB74 Review: The Basics
Over the past year, I've taken my Jimny through all kinds of terrains-mountain trails, city streets, and everything in between. This little 4x4 packs a punch and has proven itself time and again in the toughest conditions. But like any vehicle, it has its strengths and weaknesses, and in this video, I’ll go over all of them.
Let’s dive into the following aspects:
Exterior and Design
Interior Comfort
Driving Experience
Off-Road Capabilities
On-Road Performance
Fuel Economy
1. Exterior and Design: Rugged Yet Modern
The first thing you’ll notice about the Jimny JB74 is its rugged, boxy design. It’s reminiscent of older, classic off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class but in a compact form. Suzuki nailed the retro styling, which makes the JB74 stand out in a world dominated by sleek crossovers and bulky SUVs.
Over the past year, I’ve found that its dimensions-short and tall with large wheel arches-are perfect for tight city spots and narrow off-road tracks. The flat, square shape makes visibility excellent, a huge plus for any off-roader.
However, there are a few drawbacks. The spare tire mounted on the rear door adds weight and makes it a bit cumbersome to open, especially when loaded with gear. But that's a small price to pay for a vehicle that stays true to its off-road DNA.

2. Interior Comfort: Simple but Functional
Inside, the Jimny JB74 keeps things simple. The dashboard is no-frills, with physical buttons and dials instead of a high-tech touchscreen that might be distracting off-road. Over the year, I’ve found this to be one of its greatest strengths. There’s less to go wrong when you're out in the wild, far from any service center.
The front seats are comfortable for both short and long journeys, but the rear seats are a little tight, especially for taller passengers. The upright seating position, though, gives a commanding view of the road (or trail), which enhances both safety and the driving experience.
The materials used in the cabin are rugged and hard-wearing, great for muddy boots and wet clothes, but if you're looking for luxury, this might not be the vehicle for you. It’s functional and durable, designed to withstand the rigors of off-roading rather than pamper you.

3. Driving Experience: Fun and Engaging
One year in, and the Jimny JB74 still brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. There’s something incredibly satisfying about its simple, back-to-basics approach to driving. It’s no sports car, but the 1.5L engine provides enough power for both city driving and off-road adventures. It's nimble and lightweight, which makes it surprisingly agile in tight spaces, whether you're navigating a busy street or winding trails.
The 5-speed manual transmission is engaging and gives you a sense of connection with the vehicle. The short wheelbase also adds to the fun, although it can make for a bumpy ride on uneven roads.
However, the steering can feel a bit vague at higher speeds, and on highways, the Jimny’s tall profile means it's susceptible to crosswinds. But for what it’s designed to do-off-roading-it excels.
SEO Keywords: Suzuki Jimny driving experience, JB74 manual transmission, Jimny on-road performance, fun to drive off-roader
4. Off-Road Capabilities: A True Trail Blazer
Off the beaten path, the Jimny JB74 is an absolute legend. Over the past year, I’ve taken it on numerous off-road adventures, and it has never failed to impress. With its solid front and rear axles, part-time 4WD system, and low-range gearbox, this little SUV punches well above its weight.
The short wheelbase, combined with excellent approach, breakover, and departure angles, allows the Jimny to tackle steep inclines, sharp descents, and rocky trails with ease. Even on rough terrains, the suspension does a great job absorbing the bumps.
One of the highlights is the Hill Descent Control, which has come in handy on steep, slippery slopes.

Had my Jimny for 8 months and driven 23000 km, have driven everywhere with it. (Highway, country roads, rough dirt roads) Awesome little car and its completely stock.
@niklasgustafsson6757 That's awesome! That's a lot of driving 😀
@@LowRangeNick Yeah, its my daily driver and it will probably hit the 30000km mark att the end of the year 🤠
Ive had my Jimny for a year and a half, best interior mod would be the center console/arm rest. Just an ebay purchase and it's great. Makes for a more comfortable drive
@@adams6849 Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
I put on the same snorkel and found it rubbed on the A pillar as well i put a overlapped layer of thick rubber tape between them and it fixed the problem perfectly
For me the favourite interior mod I have done is upgrading the front speakers and adding the rear speakers. Other than that, the thing that bolts on under the door pulls to make it a pocket good for holding wallets or phones or whatever when driving.
Great recommendations, I'll have to get shopping 👍🙂
I had same issue with snorkel when converting to snorkel stainless pipe connector. I tightened down all bolts (did not fix it). What worked is installing rubber pads where the snorkel meets the fender (not the windshield pillar) to stop the rattle. For the pillar I use industrial velcro pads to secure the top of snorkel to the windshield pillar.
Great 1 year review. I've owned an XL 5 door for about 6 months now and I love it, despite all its qwerks. The only other annoyance I have from what you've outlined is all the rattles inside. When you're revving about 3000 rpm windows (when partially open) and dash rattle. Not sure if you have the same issue? Apart from that no issues. I plan on doing a lift soon also. Snorkel I'm undecided. I like the stainless ones from Fab Fabrications or Meredith Metalworks but they are pricey.
@spirro78 That's awesome! I was thinking the 5 door must be a little bit better on the highway than the short wheelbase ? How does it perform on those rougher roads at highway speeds? There is definately a few rattles going on. I usually have music going so doesn't bother me too much haha awesome little 4bys 🙂
@@LowRangeNick definitely feels more grounded. I guess due to the slightly more heavier weight it has. A lot more practical with a family with the added space.
shocked with the issues youve had with the no driill snorkel. has to be mine fave mod so far, installed it within 2 hours, and ive had no problem with rattling or anything. it is the V3 version though so maybe that could help. but yea improved fuel economy and a noticable slightly zappier car.
The thing is you get a few different version of those, you probably have the proper one, and I think Nick was unlucky enough to buy the knock-off version, I see them on our local online retailers here in South Africa too, You need to spend a bit of time and buy the little more expensive and proper one, It has zero issues and works a treat.
I bet you get a heap of views with this one I see jimmy's popping up everywhere atm 👍
I own a Y62 and in the last 12 months I see them everywhere now.(Mine is 9 months old) I went to coles the other day and i kid you not there where 4 parked near each other, so i had to park with them 😆
Great little run down Nick. I completely agree on the tiring nature of highway driving. Definitely notice how different it is to driving other cars. But that’s ok! We just do shorter days when long distance driving. I love my Jimny so much too. Can’t wait to see more videos. I’d wondered where you’d got to!
@savethebeeeez thanks a lot 😊 that's right, shorter drives are the go 👍
Welcome back Nick its great to see you still love your Jimny is much as I love mine too. I will never get rid of it . I have to do my lift and tyres on mine next and very much thinking about going a stainless or powder coated Snorkel I just love the look of them and give them a awesome bit of sound is well
Thanks for the review. I'm purchasing an XL my other 4WD is a 2015 Land Rover Defender so I'm used to those little things that make the vehicle unique. I've opted for an Auto as mine will be mostly my daily drive. I travel some pretty potholed roads to work so the Jimny was the right choice for a daily drive.
Snap, I’m taking delivery tomorrow of a Jimny as a daily drive as opposed to my 2015 Puma
Great content 👍
I love my little Jimny JB74,
Simple oldschool technology in a modern, small but very capable 4x4.... Solid axels front and rear..do i need to say more?😎
Get my jimny in 2 weeks :) 3 door manual glx. Taking it across the simpson desert august next year (i have a few mates with some utes coming.. they can carry the food.. and my fuel.. lol.
@@matthewpiper4328 That's awesome! That would be an epic trip. 👍
Had the same problem with mega jimny snorkel used nano double sided waterproof tape on the pillar and swapped the stainless steel pipe, which looks great but I could not stop it hitting the bonnet particularly on start up and shutting down when engine seems to move alot with some flexable intake pipe and a reducing silicone on the airbox am now very pleased with it
@@ianmoss2362 That's right. It was all to do with the metal intake pipe. I'm thinking I will order one online with a rubber hose.
Spot on mate I have a gen 3 i bought 12 years ago will never sell it absolutely love it but like you said for touring I have a hilux LOL
Hi mate! For the seat covers I went for Razorback with premium neoprene. They were expensive, but fantastic at the same time. I can totally recommend them ❤. Also, I find funny that we went for the same mats and the same tray for the cargo space 😅
@@mundocpc awesome! Thanks for the recommendations 😊
Thanks for honesty review ❤❤
You should keep the PLB in the glove box
Might need the steering damper changed, I have a tough dog adjustable one and man that thing is great
@chipoplouss awesome, I'll have to look into that 👍
Great vid, I’m thinking about the same roof racks as yours. How do you find the wind noise with them?
I have them and they're completely fine :) dont notice the wind at all
@@savannahcoates thanks for that!
@@interested_in_things Just as above. They are great, with no noticeable wind noise 🙂
@@LowRangeNick think I’ll pull the trigger on them, thanks. And also, what mount do you use to attach your maxtrax to them?
@interested_in_things I usually just use some short tie down straps and they never move around.
What's the caster like after the lift mate? My pet hate on any 4wd is wandering steering at high speed. Would be cool if Superior did some radius arms for Jimny (they will always be Sierras to me 😉)
@intimatespearfisher The caster is good because when I did the lift kit, I pressed in some 2 degree caster Bushes to the control arms. There is a couple of companies that do the castor corrected arms but I think they are usually for bigger then 2 inch lifts.
I hear new Diesels are nothing but trouble, with dpf, deisel carbon biuld up.
I❤JIMNY!!!💪🏻🚜❤️🔥🔝
Hi Nick, what is you opinion on inner arch wheel liners?
I have a SZ5 in grey.
@@RB-tz8kj good idea 💡
..thanks for sharing...what's the brand and size of your tire? are those all-terrain pizza cutters?..Also as per your experience, is it more convenient and economical to maintain and PMS(periodic maintenance service) a 4wd petrol engine vs a 4wd diesel engine?
@@odlanorirom they are 235/75r15 tyres and maxxis razr at811
@@LowRangeNick ...thanks appreciated it...Also as per your experience, is it more convenient and economical to maintain and PMS(periodic maintenance service) a 4wd petrol engine vs a 4wd diesel engine?
@odlanorirom a petrol vehicle is generally cheaper and easier to maintain, yep.
@@LowRangeNick ...thanks for the help...
When are you going to do another silent camping trip 😅
@buster_1972 haha it can be arranged 👌
I wish to God they sold them in the u. S
I love my jimny,
what size tyre are you running?
That's what I like about you Nick....a very honest appraisal!
@@ianrichardson9200 thanks Ian 😊
May i ask what the lithium jump starter cost is USD? Thanks How often have you used it. I purchased one I don't know 2-3 years ago purchased a new vehicle was out in the bush I past out left my lights on. In the morning my battery was totally flat I was excited remembered my new lithium jump started and I had fully charged. It didn't even turn the engine over once. It was a 2.2 l turbo diesel motor.
Hi Nick , I had a 2007 Jimny and drove it all over the high country here in Victoria and did the Simpson and lots of outback trips 1000’s of kilometres it was a great little vehicle. I just wanted to ask about your Izuzu. I don’t have any friends who own one to ask. I want to buy a 2016/17 Dmax . I wondered if you still feel happy with yours, I’ve watched your videos on the few problems but overall has it been reliable now the bugs are ironed out so to speak and would you still buy another one . I’ve got 25 k to spend on a 2WD Ute and they seem to be the lesser of 4 evils. Thanks for posting your great videos.
@AndyL940 That's awesome! Go the Jimny 😀 As for the Isuzu, it's such a nice vehicle to drive. I have had a lot of issues with it though. The water pump just started to leak as well at 136k so can't say I've had a great run with reliability.
@@LowRangeNick Thanks mate , food for thought 👍
Honestly how can you get excited about a Suzuki gimney? OK even as a business I just could not get excited enough to fit lights or filters or speak on TV give me a Porsche 911 turbo or a land cruiser or anything that has a decent engine had some clearance. Maybe at your age I could get into it. Its not nice getting old.
