I once heard that the lancer bodysuit design that a lot of Celtic servants have is to emulate the history of the warriors fighting with nothing but paint on their bodies
Which is Fake. They weren’t fighting naked, The Gauls even invented Chainmail. Furthermore the Irish celts are a diffrent tribe than the british and gaulic celts. The Ulster cycle warriors also wear armour. Cu Chulainn has a special suit of cloth and leather armour that lets him retain his sanity in his riastard and is durable enough to dent weapons against it.
@@Andre-c6z Yeah but as we know, the Throne of Heroes derrives its depictions of Servants from both historical truth AND legend/reputation. Its why Vlad Tepes has Draculas powers, but hates them and denies them, for example.
The thing about Scathach is that certain things about her FGO portrayal (and by extension the Extella Link one too) are kind of forced by Cu Chulainn's portrayal in "Fate/stay night" and "Fate/hollow ataraxia". Especially the thing with runes. Artoria cites his runic protection as one of the things (along with the lance) that makes him identifiable to her. And in UBW route it is said in narration "Gae Bolg is not the only thing he obtained in the Country of Shadows. He is the hero who obtained all eighteen of the Runes of Origin" (old fan-translation for Primordial Rune). So Scathach was kind of stuck with runes in Fate lore from that moment. And in "Fate/hollow ataraxia" there is a whole scene where Shirou asks Cu Chulainn about his past, which also locked some of Fate Scathach lore in place: "By the time I got there, she quit being human... Land of Shadows is close to the world of spirits, ya see? She basically turned into a guard that warded off the dead. There were even some near-gods among the dead. She was so good with a spear she could even handle shutting them in even though her body was a human's. You can understand how crazy that'd be, right?" So that was the established foundation of Fate's Scathach 10 years before FGO's release.
You know, Scathach's skills and NP actually fits another figure of Celtic myth: Cethlenn, Balor's wife and Cu Chulainn's great grandmother. Clairvoyance Cethlenn had the power of prophecy that allows her to tell her husband Balor that he would be killed by his own grandson, who would bring an end to the Fomorian's rule over Ireland, leading to Balor trying to prevent that child's conception and later try to kill the baby Lugh when he is born in spite of his attempt to prevent it. Godslayer + Gae Bolg In Battle of Mag Tuired, recorded in the Lebor Gabála Érenn, Cethlenn used a gae (javelin) to inflict a mortal wound on Dagda, on his stomach if I recall correctly, killing him. (He got better eventually) I've always liked to think that the spear Cethlenn used to kill Dagda would later be called Gae Bolg due to it's feat of killing him, that the weapon was passed to Scathach when Cethlenn died, and that Scathach would later pass on that same spear to Cu Chulainn, her great grandson and the child of the grandson her husband tried to kill. P.S. On an unrelated note, did you know that if your comment gets a heart by the channel's creator, but then you edit the comment to maybe correct a spelling error, the heart gets removed? I didn't, until just a while ago. Turns out it's to prevent malicious text or something. The more you know~ 😅
I still find it funny how her summer version (the version that is not meant to be accurate) actually uses Gae Bolg correctly, where as both Cu and her other form just shove it inside enemies.
There's a theory that her connection to Skadi and some other weird explanations come from a book with wrongly syncretized myths that was, for a while, one of the very few books about western mythology translated into japanese. Barbara Walker's 1983 book 'The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets'.
Wisdom of Dun Scaith doesn't take skills. It allows the use of any skill as long as it's generic. Gae Bolg doesn't inherently have causality reversal; that is a technique Cu Chulainn created to use with Gae Bolg. Gae Bolg in Fate has three abilities: a passive curse that spreads around wounds caused by to prevent healing, to seek the heart when thrown, and to split apart into multiple copies when thrown towards a group of targets.
@@Fermin-hw5pd It comes from Complete Material Book 2, it says it's sometimes thrown from the fork of the toes (a refence to actual legend) and that it would splinter multiple spearheads. Both Cu's and Scathach's versions of the NP refer to it in Extella and FGO.
Scathach's my favorite, but this really explains why it felt like trying to find more about her is lacking. There's legends about her that are missing. She's very much a badass, beautiful spear martial artist and teacher, but I've always felt that I couldn't get much about her beyond that, which makes me a little sad. And, I personally find the gag of "don't call her a grandma" to be tiring. Yes she's immortal, but she has the looks of a 20 year old anime girl. So, I don't really see how this gag works at all. This is also one of many times where I wish female warrior servants like her would have visible muscle, as she's shown in her prime, not some super model
There is at least one source (quoted in Volume 2 of "On the Manners and Customs of the Ancient Irish: A Series of Lectures Delivered by the Late Eugene O'Curry", the University of Michigan 1873), that says Bolg Mac Buain, who found the corpse of Currid afloat also made the Gae Bolg. He did pull Currid's head ashore with Coinchenn still being around. According to this source the spear was made by him and it passed through many hand until a certain former student of Scathach, Dermeil, did give it to her. Now there are some caveats to this, like that the only copy of the text stating that is from 1714, tough it claims to be from a source from before the 10th century [and seems to linguistically fit that bill] or that it treats Aoife as Scathach's daughter instead of sister. In Fate Scathach seems to be closer associated with the origin of the Gae Bolg explaining why she can make more of them. I could not find any information on the armor made from Currid existing outside of Cu Alter. it might be fiction like Cu Alter himself is, based on Curruid and that would explain why Scathach says she did not teach him that trick.
To be fair for the clairvoyance aspect clairvoyance on fate has 2 levels Either it enhances your vision which is why a lot of archers have it to it enhances your vision to a point that future sight is sort of a side effect. 11:48 Honestly, what is it with mythical kings and giving out challenges trying to get heroes killed? If you don't want him to marry your daughter just refuse and leave it at that. More seriously though, it is curious that this trope is so common throughout european (maybe elsewhere too?) myths.
Well, when the world is ruled by meatheaded kings that used to be warriors that took long journeys to unite people into a well...kingdom, it follows that writers of myth would also write stories that follow that example. And that in those stories, those same kings would demand a hero's journey for proof of worth. Also, considering that a huge variety of issues were solved via combat in those medieval times, it makes sense that it would be idealized and romanticized over time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but iirc the inability to die part was added in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia which, while Scathach herself isn't present, we find out about her wish to die in Cu Chulainn's backstory section. I assume they added this detail about Scathach's death wish because it ties in with the conclusion of Cu's "arc" in F/HA, and his relationship with another character which is affected by this new added detail of Scathach's death wish. But ever since F/HA I haven't seen her desire to die be brought up in a serious manner too much outside of a few mentions here and there in her FGO appearances (Though I'm not sure about Extella Link)
Honestly I am really surprised I kinda expected this video to be way shorter compared to the Bradamente video. But it ended up covering more that expected considering how little there is about her. I really want to see how much you could find if you make a video on Darius III.

it's my understanding that Gae Bolg does not innately have causality reversal built into it, and that instead it has heart seeking and a curse of healing prevention built in. the reversal of causality being actually a technique Cu came up with, on par with tsubame gaeshi in how much skill it takes to pull off. scathach's spears don't actually reverse causality to hit.
I'm impressed you brought up the idea that most of her 'mixed' skillset and characterization are things she stole from other Celtic servants, chief among them poor Fionn, to increase her own importance to their detriment.
Thanks for the vid. It is weird they gave her the god slayer skill if her existing stories only involve teaching others. Maybe it’s not literal, maybe she has the god like ability to slay people to the degree that it is beyond that of a regular mortal as opposed to one killing gods? If she is the goddess of death and accepts great warriors who were slain in battle into her domain (underworld/heaven). Of course in game it’s meant to give her bonus dmg to divinities, so it’s clear that they mean she is good at killing gods in that case. Well, since there are many stories of her lost to time, no one can say for sure if she didn’t kill gods or not 🙃

About the barbed spear Gae Bolg that Lancer uses in Fate/SN, when Kirei commands him to kill himself you can see red marks forming around the wound and expanding throughout his entire body. I believe that happens to be the result of a 2nd affinity the spear has, which might be always active unlike the sure hit attack that requires Cu calling Gae Bolg's name to activate. The spear is considered a demonic weapon that leaves a curse to whomever is struck by it, and I believe the curse is the effect of internal damage that a barbed weapon would leave in it's victim. Saber admits she is permanently debuffed, possibly because she was cursed by Lancer's NP, but is not as affected because she had luck to avoid a lethal injury, and has high magic defense that eases the curse effects on her. Tldr; the barbed spear of lancer, has it's barbs shaped in a magical curse, and is a passsive effect, one that doesn't require the NP's true name called to be activated.
@@Fermin-hw5pd you mean his berserker form from the myth? The closest thing I've noticed is when Lancer gets serious his veins of his face make him a bit uglier, something no other servant ever does, but I could be wrong
Worth mentioning that in some tellings of Celtic myth, Scathach isnt Gaelic or Pictish herself, but rather Scythian (who were Eastern Iranian-speaking steppe tribes). Which means she's also probably able to be summoned as a Rider
Nasu traveled into the past or used Solomon clairvoience and looked into past to know lost legends of Scathach were she was killing gods and stealing skills
Man, Bedivere is gonna be weird. Idk if they're gonna try and justify the Nuada connection beyond the 'illusory Excalibur' plot point. As the one who returned the sword, I think "Dead End Excalibur" would fit his NP but I don't know about Dead End Airgetlam.

@@CezaryBaszyk-bx2xu He’s done Saber Artoria, but I don’t think he’s done one for the actual King Arthur from Prototype. Unless Arthur was covered in Artoria’s vid… 🤔
I honestly didn't expect that Final Rating for Scathach. For a fan favorite Servant (and Milf material), Scathach is very poorly represented (and used) in Fate/FGO. Although, well... I've always felt that the FGO Writers don't know what to do with Scathach. First of all, she could easily fall into the "Mary Sue" category since she has a lot of traits that people hate about so-called "Mary Sues". However, second of all, Scathach's roles are small or minimal. Even the Writers know that they made her so powerful that they had to turn her into a Plot Device (or Enemy to defeat) for her to be compelling. Ironically, and this is my personal opinion, I would have liked Scathach to fall into Hell along with other Servants who share the same problem as Scathach: they are not accurate or the Lore we get in Fate/FGO is very misinterpreted.
@@CrazyYurie oyakodon is a japanese recipe that use chicken and eggs. Apparantly japanese use that name for a fetish, wich i believe is self explanatory.
About the doubt of Scahatch having the ability to use Gae Bolg, i think she did have it. In a legend i read (which i think have been romanticized), just like your video tells in which Cu and Ferriad got taught by Scahatch but only Cu got to learn and given Gae Bolg, instead both was actually given Gae Bolg in their training (coz Scahatch have a bunch of it on her armory) but Cu shows more talent and aptitude on wielding the spear so Scahatch only teach Cu about the technique of the spear. This would be later brought up when they're dueling one another after Ferdiad was sent by Medb as her champion. Cu was quite reluctant to face his own training bro but Ferdiad tells him how he actually loathed Cu. He got all the glory, women, and attention all to himself even though both were taught by the same mentor. He also mention how their mentor favours him more by giving him the Spear and it's technique. Whether this is just to make Cu facing him seriously or not, Cu finally got serious and with the proper Gae Bolg technique, he got the upper hand and wins the duel. Then he mourns the death of his bro

Why you dont think sending enemies to heaven is not threatening? In Blue Archive there is a paradoxical question/koan that asks "does paradise exist" or something like that. Its question paradoxical because no one can prove that there are paradise bevause no one would leave true paradise - if they left than it wasn't real paradise. So semding enemies into gate of paradise/heaven while not that scary for them its still renders them unable to fight and if it was hell they might would have the reason to brake out from it but in heaven they would just give up fighting alltogather. Wich is threatening to generals leading those armies that gets sucked into gate of sky))) im just yapping here. Dont mind me
I’ve long acknowledged her FGO counterpart is Nasu’s OC, but her nonchalant arrogance and enigmatic personality annoys me when the pinnacle of her feats are in her student Cu who’s okay, while Chiron raised and trained more legendary heroes and doesn’t Cary the same ego.
She is a collab project between Sakurai and Nasu. And considering that Summer Scathatch and Skadi is solely written by Sakurai, it's safe to say that she mostly responsible for her. Kinda track considering some other character she wrote.
Funny thing about Scathach in Fate, well unrelated to legends in myth, but weirdly enough… There's some legit fuel for the whole Ritsuka x Scathach thing. Such as her Valentine being girly, and in her summer varient's where she tried to resist Ritsuka's charms, as she's not even immune, her second interlude where she's softened up, her Bond 5 line after part 1 she decided to put her goal on pause, her Summer Bond 5 where she gave Ritsuka a lap pillow, and the end of the first Summer event where Ritsuka told her that her swimsuit looks great. So yeah, plenty of fuel. And I also ship it, funny enough.

I thought he survived a hit with the Gae Bolg because one of his battle spasms
@@Fermin-hw5pd you mean his berserker form from the myth? The closest thing I've noticed is when Lancer gets serious his veins of his face make him a bit uglier, something no other servant ever does, but I could be wrong
Worth mentioning that in some tellings of Celtic myth, Scathach isnt Gaelic or Pictish herself, but rather Scythian (who were Eastern Iranian-speaking steppe tribes). Which means she's also probably able to be summoned as a Rider
I did not know this. :o
Nasu traveled into the past or used Solomon clairvoience and looked into past to know lost legends of Scathach were she was killing gods and stealing skills
I need that skill
Man, Bedivere is gonna be weird. Idk if they're gonna try and justify the Nuada connection beyond the 'illusory Excalibur' plot point. As the one who returned the sword, I think "Dead End Excalibur" would fit his NP but I don't know about Dead End Airgetlam.
Another terrific video, Yurie: and after you said two massive fails, I wasn't expecting the second best Lancer Girl in the series to score that high😅
Edit: I'm so sorry for turning in late, I've been busy preparing for my mom's birthday later today
Second best? Whose the first? :o
13:58 "Cú Chulainn was a major sex god." So that's why Shirou was so overprotective of RIn in UBW. He didn't give Cú any chances XD
He could sense it. :P
imagine if shirou runs into astolfo the milf slayer.
that monster energy even puts the celts to shame.
I find it really intriguing that there are some missing legends... maybe one day somebody will unearth a bunch of tapestries or something
Sadly a lot of things have been deliberately destroyed or were simply never written down. :/
I guess I just didn't expect this to really be the case with such an important character in a popular European story... do you think the English occupation had anything to do with the disappearance of scathach tales?
@@markowitzen I honestly don't know, but I think the issues came before that.
7:01 now you are making me of a rank up for her summer form getting some form of sea side buff
Huh?
Well she gets a buff on the evocation festival she's in
Ooooohshe seems awesome! Also if shes in Fate/Extella then I get to see more of her yaaaay!
But more importantly BEDI IS NEXT!!!!!!
Great vid keep cooking 🐐
i wont spoil but, dont count on ordeal call's 2 shishou, you will see it in 2 years
My first ssr
She was one of my first too!
FInaly, I get to know what is her deal....
I feel god slayer should have gone to Fionn rather then scathath
Truth. My research into Scathach has made me MUCH more interested in doing a video in Fionn - especially since Diarmuid is on the list.
Are you telling me this dude tried getting a harem and then pulled an Oyakadon!?
Cu had Harem Protagonist EX long before it became a meme!!😂
Oyakadon?
@@CrazyYurie basicaly it's being in a relationship with the parent and the child
Well tsiah did say Finn got some skill stolen by the dev and given to Scathach
That would be the God-Slayer skill specifically.
Sorry to bother you, but since you covered my favorite female servant, could you cover my favorite male one (Proto Arthur) as well ?👀👀
Didnt they made Arthur video already?
@@CezaryBaszyk-bx2xu
He’s done Saber Artoria, but I don’t think he’s done one for the actual King Arthur from Prototype.
Unless Arthur was covered in Artoria’s vid… 🤔
I did that already.
@@CrazyYurie Cool, sorry I didn't check.
Your videos are great btw.
All of Scathach’s God Slayer stuff is totally an embellishment, yes.
Fionn got robbed, for real.
I was tempted. What kept her out is just how little information we have about Scathach.
I see Cu likes Oyakodon
Wha?
@@CrazyYurie oyakodon is a japanese recipe that use chicken and eggs. Apparantly japanese use that name for a fetish, wich i believe is self explanatory.
Tir na nog
Most simply is kinda like Arthurian Avalon in a way
Really? I don't think people go to Avalon when they die like with Tir Na Nog
@@Fermin-hw5pd depends on the version sometimes they do sometimes they don’t
Do you remember which version this comes from? :o
Can we please get her twin sister as a pretender class servant.
You would have to ask the FGO devs that one. :o
@@CrazyYurie while we’re at it, we can get Ashiya Dōman as pretender where he does pretend to be Seimei
Wait, her sister hasn't appeared yet? Not even in one event as an NPC?
is the audio quality weird for anyone else
In what regard?
👍
She just stole some skills from Fionn.
Haven't watched it yet but I'd be devastated if Bunny Scatcath isn't canon.
Well...
@@CrazyYurie I can't believe it isn't real.
props for acknowledging that they intentionally gave it to her just for fan service though and not taking that costume into consideration when evaluating her as a character. I mean it's obvious but I could see someone getting salty for fan service.
Dont mind me
At the very least, sending them to Tir na nOG isn't so threatening - especially since you have examples of mortals visiting there and coming back.
Scotland?????????
Indeed.
giving scathach a d... not sure if shed happily take it or be offended that its only one...
Lewd!
Knew I wasn't the only one who thought this lol
Unfortunately most people skipped, forgot or say it's not canon because "it's fanservice".
@@g04234 Yeah. I still ship it though.
