  • How well does Fate/Grand Order portray Senji Muramasa, also known as Sengo Muramasa? How close is Muramasa's in-game version to his historical and mythical counterpart? In this video we delve into his character design, in-game skills, and characterization in order to determine that, followed up by giving it a grade in terms of its historical accuracy. Was Muramasa truly a semi-mad swordsmith who crafted blades that pushed into the realm of demons or even gods? Find out here!

There's *way* more to talk about with that NP btw.
Specifically how it relates to Shirou and his UBW. The entire thing is an Inversion of UBW. It has a chant similar to it as well needed to invoke which is used in full in Shinmosa. The entire reason he can even manage to make the damn thing is because he uses UBW to manifest its landscape of infinite swords and inverts it to become a sword of Infinity.
He's literally swinging a condensed Reality Marble in the shape of a sword.
PS: the only time we see this happen in any other event in Fate is when Koyanskaya gets put in her egg by a self-proclaimed Grand Caster candidate.

So Shirou ends up being a pretty interesting choice of host for someone like Muramasa. On a technical level sure, his affinity for swords is a great match, but Muramasa's nasty-sounding nature is quite different from Shirou. This possession appears to be a blend of the two personalities, and the end result is a servant who's a grump with a heart of gold. From what I've seen of Stay Night, Shirou's big characteristic there is always wanting to do the right thing amid the amoral world of magecraft he's been thrust into. As a servant he has less freedom to go against the Foreign God's wishes, but that moral core is still there driving him to help or at least not impede Chaldea whenever possible. And Muramasa for his part comes off as the type who'd hate being bossed around and would rather be left alone to do his thing, so Shirou's soft-disobedience would be fine by him.

    • @ChaosKnight836

I mean, OG Shirou in the VNs was actually rather snarky about everything, and his trauma was that much more apparent in his inner monologues, he just never really actually said any of it out loud. It didn't really carry over to the anime, which is why he seems so much nicer than the VN Shirou.
But yeah, a grump with a heart of gold, that's the perfect description for MuraShirou.

I'd like to mention that another reason Projection is such a good fit for Muramasa is that, as a servant, he's too strong. Every swing he takes, even with them being his own nearly divine blades, shatters them to bits. Getting to create a new weapon for each swing eliminates that weakness, allowing him to actually fight as a saber. I assume that one-swing restriction is part of why Tameshi-mono is a one turn buff, despite his swords theoretically being much more well made than Shirou's Projection

  • @duelist4512
    @duelist4512 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

    Well, a few things:
Flame EX actually has nothing to do with what happened in LB 6. The flames he uses are the ones you find in his pseudo reality marble which he deploys for his Noble Phantasm. He just draws upon the flames from there to power his attacks which makes sense why it charges his NP so much. Even then, the flames are also representative of the flames used by blacksmiths to forge their blade which also gets him closer to forging his ultimate blade therefore another reason why it charges his np.
Karmic Eye also has close ties to both Shirou and Muramasa. For Shirou, this could be seen as a combination of EMIYA's 2 skills, Eye of the Mind (True) and Clarvoyence/Hawkeye. Eye of the Mind (True) being the ability to predict the moves of an opponent based on experience, which is why EMIYA could keep up with Herc, Cu and Sasaki despite being slower than each of them. Clarvoyence/Hawkeye are skills that give heighten perception and allows for a more percise hits and optimal moves, hence the crit focus it has in game. Muramasa on the other hand has a passive called "Connosier (Can't spell :P) of Blades" which symbolises his vast knowledge of swords and explains his own ability to use them effectively. He would likely understand the foundation of how a sword moves better than most allowing him to understand high level sword techniques. All this accumilates to Karmic Eyes which combines these aspects into one skill allowing Muramasa to break any defense instead of defending himself, and hitting more persicely with great skill. It fits the both of them and works rather well for this character.
Then there's the first skill which I will not attepnt to type the name of. Yeah, this is basically Muramasa's version of Projection and fits more Shirou than Muramasa. However Projection as a magecraft is a perfect fit for Muramasa himself. The process of Projection is an advanced form of gradiant air, a low level magecraft which replicates the properties of objects. Projection takes it alot of steps further by copying the history and creation process of the object as well. That's why, while every mage is capable of using Gradiant Air, they'd never be able to use projection on the level Shirou does. Projection is essentially Blacksmithing but as a Magecraft. There's about 8 steps required to project even 1 blade. Muramasa being knowlegdable about Blacksmithing makes this skill even stronger than it already was.
Then there's Muramasa's goal of creating the Ultimate Weapon. This likely stems from the story he was in with another blacksmith Masamune. There, they each create a sword, Muramasa creates a sword that can cut through anything while Masamune's cuts through anything that's not good in nature. While it's definately a false tale, it's stated that those blades are the goals for thier respective smiths which is the only instance we have of Muramasa even having a goal in the first place which explains why that's his goal in the story.
Honestly I like Muramasa's depiction in fate, they took everything on him, fused it with a version of Shirou that became a proper mage, and created an excellent Character fusing some of the best aspects for each.

While the connections to Shirou are deliberately obvious, to me, when playing through the story Muramasa reminded me of Kurogane from Tales of Berseria. Both are renowned blacksmiths obsessed with their craft even after "betraying humanity" (becoming a daemon for Kurogane, and being contracted to the Foreign God for Muramasa). Both desire to forge the ultimate blade, and have even created a sword named after themselves that could be considered their magnum opus (Tsumukari Muramasa for Muramasa, and Kurogane Stormquell for Kurogane). Both constantly create blades that fall just short of perfection (Muramasa's demonic blades and any sword broken by Stormhowl for Kurogane). Both act as the grumpy grandpa of the group due to being older than anyone else in the party. Said obsession with creating the ultimate blade reaches it's peak at the end of their stories where they turn _themselves_ into the sword (Excalibur for Muramasa and Kurogane Stormquell for Kurogane). And both would gift said blade to the person who gave them hope again (Castoria for Muramasa and Rokuro for Kurogane).
Man, when you pointed it out, Muramasa really did go out in the best way possible. Got to forge a divine sword like he's always wanted, was able to stop his surrogate granddaughter Castoria from sacrificing herself and managed to break his contract with the Foreign God all at the same time. Respect.

When Someone with so little background to know got one of the longest video. You know he is the GOAT.
Also, for the Muramasa blade being not as durable. I don't agree, the reason being Muramasa blade was famed to be so sharp that it can cut through many things with ease. Especially human, this is probably why most people think the blades are demonic. It is simply merciless in that, it can cut through the living with ease. (This reasoning is also because, there is a tale about Muramasa and Masamune rivaly. Long story short, Masamune ended winning because Masamune blade will not cut those who are worthy meanwhile Muramasa will cut through anything the wielder choose. You can check on TH-cam, it's pretty cool)
And another reason, Muramasa has skilled that can maximize a weapon destructive potential at the cost of it breaking. Sort of similar of Emiya using Broken phantasm. This is why in Shimousa, Muramasa blade immediately break after using. It is not because the blade is not the durable, Muramasa just maximaze the blade potential.
Tho safe to say, people mention that a single failed Muramasa sword is worth 10 normal sword. That's just saying how good Muramasa bladesmithing is.

Considering how craftsmen are usually put into Caster classes, I'd have preferred seeing a Caster design Shirou. Territory Creation and Item Construction are skills specifically for making workshops and crafting tools.

If I really had to give a class to muramasa outside saber, it'd be caster.
"Oh hey I make some of the most cursed swords in Japan."
Plus A lot of inventors like Tesla, Edison, and Babbage are casters as well.

As someone who has Muramasa as his favourite servant in the entire franchise, I must say i was deeply disappointed by the fact that Nasu decided to use him in LB6
The fact that he went into interviews saying that he wrote Muramasa's role in that story to make full references to FSN with castoria killed almost all possibilities for people to see him as his own character and now almost everyone just goes and self insert Shirou in him, which became worse considering how many lined towards FSN servants he has such as Saber, which are just bland nostalgia baits
And before someone says that he sacrificed himself out of free will, Nasu also said in an interview that Merlin deliberately manipulated him into killing himself for Artoria's sake, hence why he started saying shit like "oh but what transpired here was FaTe"
In the end, I find Muramasa's case to be rather tragic because of Nasu's incapability of respect his character, which is why I end up despising Castoria and LB6 as a whole so much
It was a story that narratively and literally killed Muramasa as a character so bad that in summer 8 one fucking line to A.A caused huge controversies around him again and brought back all those people who refuse to treate him as character
LB6 is a story that, for me, served nothing more than turning him from "an amazing swordsmith that could craft the ultimate blade" to "hey lets have a shirou face saving an Artoria face" 💀
    I hate Nasu

I don't know if you heard about it, but there was a survey in Japan where they asked the players, in general, who were the male servants who they expected to receive a summer costume (no summer alt because this game is so against that)
Oberon came on 1st place and Muramasa on 2nd, and since he received a damage bonus boost during the event everyome was expecting something.
It turns out that A.A had contracted Muramasa as a bodyguard because "Muramasa's first ascension can be considered a swimsuit" and was the reason he never participated in the event at all.
His only dialogue in the whole event was "that was a stupid monologue" to A.A with an annoyed face while he was in her office, but the people took it in order to feed there desilusions with that disgusting ship
Shit was so bad that social medias where on fire for months because Nasu keeps feeding those desilusionals with more references to the fate route.
This is just another reason for why I hate LB6 so much.
Making Muramasa's whole role about being used for references between Shirou and Artoria ended up causing that people no longer see him as Muramasa but just a shirou clone or something so they can self insert Shirou on it, which is even more tragic when you see how his bond 5 line is about Muramasa having an existential crisis and is trying to have the player reasure him that he is Senji Muramasa.

That's one of the things I really like with FGO. The Pseudo-Servants are really just fan service, excuses to create playable versions of non-Servant characters. They didn't actually need to go so hard with the story telling with them, but they did, and it is amazing. I'm really looking forward to next time you do a Pseudo, because they are all pretty fascinating.
