    Took this quick 3 part course, downloaded Stellarium and am using all the wonderful advice to go to an 'almost-dark' sky location about 30 minutes away, at 2am in the morning, on a clear, moonless night - to see the Milky Way. Fingers crossed.

    Went to the Buffalo Astronomy Assoc. observatory site near North Java, NY - it has a 'tan' rating (or 7 of 15) on the 'DarkSiteFinder' website. I am glad to report we were able to see the Milky Way very clearly across the sky. With that said, it was indeed perfect conditions with a new moon, low humidity, middle of the night, and no cloud cover. The view south was almost exactly as Stellarium said it would be. To be clear, the detail of the Milky Way was not like the it is on the Cape Breton Trail in Nova Scotia or the various views from other 'black' locations. Still, the takeaway is you can see the Milky Way from a tan or better rating on theDarkSiteFinder scale - though for tan (and probably light green, almost optimal conditions may be necessary. Finally, Stellarium is a easy tool for the casually interested and no doubt a great tool for more sophisticated users. Thanks Dave M. for your guidance - much appreciated.

    How do you label or name the asteroids so that when you zoom out you can still read the name in relation to the constellation? I've seen other videos that can do this...Thanks!

  • @Jsfrog
    @Jsfrog 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent series. One point and one question:
    1. First time users need to restart Stellarium to see Compass Marks, as although you enable them, they only load at startup. Yes, I felt dumb once I figured that out.
    2. Using Stellarium, I discovered that the Milky Way shows up at my desired azimuth at 4:37am, but that's only an hour before sunrise where I am now. So how do you match your desired Milky Way azimuth in Stellarium with a good lighting time from TPE? Just repeated trial and error with multiple combinations/searches in both programs, or is there some more systematic way to do it that I am not thinking of?

  • @IanLings
    @IanLings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome 3 part series! Do you know if the Milky Way in Stellarium is accurate? I compared it to Google Earth's Milky Way and the two don't seem to match up with regards to times and positioning. Hoping the catch the Milky Way out in Nevada this coming weekend.

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed it. I was just in Nevada a few weeks ago, late in the night you'll see it. It is more accurate than G.E. Make sure your time zones are correctly set:)
      Have fun!

    I'm planning some shots for Sept. and Oct. with the Milky Way coming up behind some mountains. I know your example here was at sea level. In Stellarium, would I want to enter the altitude of the mountain peak/s or of where I'm standing, about 3,000ft difference? Thanks for the tutorial and any reply!

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +David Schultz safe bet would be to put in where you are standing or even lower.

    Thanks for the great tips for using Stellarium!! I have a couple questions though. When I use the program it takes up the whole screen. In your tutorial above you were able to easily switch back and forth from it. How did you do that? I find I have to hit Ctrl Alt Delete with brings me to the Task Menu. Also, by doing that and hitting Cancel Stellarium will then be found on the bottom toolbar. However, I can no longer use the computer. I have to go back to Task Manager and stop the Stellarium program. What thoughts do you have on this? My computer has tons of space on it and I don't have lots of other programs running at the time. TYIA

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sheila Andersen Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like you're on a PC / Windows machine so I'm not really sure. On a Macbook Pro I can triple swipe up on the trackpad and see any programs currently running, this allows easy toggle.

    • @ipixelphotography5789
      @ipixelphotography5789 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sheila Anderson, I have found that you can use your F11 to make the screen smaller and then close it out on the task bar. My problem is that I can see the navigation tools that are on the left hand side. I can't even use the F keys to make any of the dialog boxes popup...Not sure what's up with that....

    I've read your written tutorial about astrophotography, but you didn't mention two important things: (1) is it essential to use filters such as Haida Clear Night filter which cuts off any sort of light pollution ? and (2) which's better for Nikon's shutter release mode: Bulb or Mirror Up ?

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool. I didn't mention them because they don't matter that much. Try both and see what works for you. this is the best way.
