For much of my life, I shied away from letting people know about my nerdiness of playing video games. Though I'm happy to play a few games once in a while with friends, I've finally made a decision to take control of my own life instead of letting games run mine.
If you're curious, Pokemon, Counter Strike, League of Legends, and Starcraft were among my favorites!

I'll never quit I'll just ignore people that feel the need to shame. But I also work full time and have other hobbies I thinks it's a little drastic to quit something you like because of social pressure. Just need to find a balance

If you're a gamer never think of quitting. If you're not a gamer (like me) don't approach video games. If you're a gamer you should love and be proud of what you're doing.

It isn't video games that ruin lives. Its your time management. Playing video games is no less offensible as watching tv or reading books. They all keep you preoccupied. Sure it may have ruined your life, but has it really? It was you who chose to not pause the game, turn off the tv, or put the book down. This begs the question to what life really is. And what one must do in a lifetime. Well to be frank, there is no meaning to it. There is no escaping it, mankind will perish. It might not happen anytime soon, but it's gonna happen. Whatever contributions you make in life will one day be scuffed from the face of existance. This leads to the point; do what you want. If you want to play games all day, do it. It won't matter in the long run. We humans are selfish, we want to enjoy our lives, but we also tell people how to enjoy their lives. Thats a problem. We tell them to be successful in life, have a family, settle down and thats a life enjoyed. But thats not everyones enjoyment. Some just want to spend their years mashing buttons on a controller. Let me ask you, what is wrong with that? Are they wasting their life? On the other hand, you could quit video games, be successful in life, have a family, and set up a good life for your offspring. Your offspring do the same. And they do so in turn, on and on all the way til mankinds extinction. Let me ask you, was what you did on the other hand even remotely better? I personally feel you still are wasting time because mankind is still doomed regardless of your efforts. So what have you done then? Yeah thats right, nothing. But you enjoyed your life, you feel acomplished (even if in vain), and thats all it matters. I'm sorry if this sounds jaded, but its reality.

+Zach Smith For me it was because I was depressed, anxious and I had dropped out of high school twice. My life was a mess. Although gaming wasn't the "problem", it was what allowed me to avoid having to deal with my situation. So moving on from games was like ripping the bandaid off and I had no choice but to improve my life in certain ways, and that's exactly what happened. I have a few videos that talk more about my story on my channel.

inmortal009 I have no problem doing it since I was never really that much obsessed, I quitted somewhere on August 2017 and then a week ago one friend from my class told me to download and install DC Universe Online.
I accepted it because I knew I was gonna keep a decent balance and never get obsessed.
That was the case until two days ago, when that same friend told me we should buy DOOM 2016 and again I accepted but with shitty 500KBPS connection it downloaded today and as soon as it downloaded friend called to play, and again I am gonna keep a decent balance and will never get obsessed. I am now twelve and started in the age of ten, which isn't a long amount of time especially if you never were that much obsessed, however that friend of mine started when he was 5 years old and quitted when I did.The only reason he started again & told me to play DC Universe Online is as he says because he like movies from DC.It also was his suggestion to buy DOOM. He calls me"noobest man on Earth", and I said:
"You can call me a noob as much as you like but I don't give a shit since I am not gamer".
And BTW I hope you take this as an advice to not play games and a if yo do dont be obsessed and I am keeping balance I am not obsessed!!!!!

Problem is not every one has that switch :) I was once "almost" addicted to it, when I used to play like 3 hours in the morning and then more about 5 the rest of the day. But from all of the sudden, I just got a bit bored of playing it because I started exercising and got a job and a lot more distraction such as tv shows, dating, etc. But, mainly for those who play competitive online gaming, is much harder than that...not being able to play a game is like they are not achieving something. I would suggest to those to not quit abruptly, but try playing games that aren't competitive such as single player ones and slowly getting out of competitive. Hope this helps since it helped me. Nowadays I can still play for 3-4 hours straight if I have the time, but even if I don't and don't get the urges I used to have when I was playing more hours daily.

  • @AntiRiku

It's funny that no one says anything if you read a bunch of fantasy novels. There's just this stigma around video games.

    • @droojalmaktab
      @droojalmaktab 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Because gaming is extremely addicting and can have a serious negative impact on your life which you usually don't notice immediately. Reading fantasy novels can be addicting but not nearly as much as gaming, and you can easily replace it with reading good books that have a positive impact on your life (i.e.non-fiction), in fact some people naturally upgrade the quality of the books they read. However with video games it's a bad habit and nothing within its category can be good, and unless you can play in moderation (does not work for me), you're certainly wasting your time and ultimately your life.
Btw I've been addicted to video games for more than 17 years and never have I imagined that I could stop. But thank God I'm now free and looking back now I think part of the cause is that I justify it by comparing it to reading fiction (rpgs are just like fantasy novels, shooters are just like military fiction.. etc.) and that's what kept me continuing despite the negative effects on me.
That's why I wrote this wall of text because this dangerous idea is what kept me from seeing the true effects of what I was doing, hope this helps you and sorry for the long reply.

I can't bring myself to complete a game anymore and I can no longer justify spending money on such crap. Andy 85 This is so true. I hate to say this but videogames now a days are just a big disappointing invested garbage to develop. So much stale and generic play style is added to them and it made me lose interest as time passed by. I remember coming home from school and immediately turning on my console to get gaming but now...i come home and i can't even look at my console, let alone my tv. In fact, they've been gathering dust now that i keep telling myself i have to clean them but for what? i don't even have a strong passion anymore to even play. The question that i can't seem to grasp is wether I'm really done with the videogames or they have gone downhill so much, i don't think it can possibly return. I feel like in some poit in the future, the whole videogame crisis is going to occur once again like it did in the 70s or 80s i believe were the videogame industry was very close in becoming extinct due to the same old crap being sold to consumers. Wouldn't be surprised if it did happen one day

I stopped watching after you said there is more in life than videogaming. Of course there is. And normal healthy thinking people know this. Playing videogames is a form of entertainment nothing more nothing less. If for whatever reason you get so obsessed and addicted then more is going on with you. If videogames didn't exist you would have found something else to get that fix you need. Just because you had issues doesn't mean everyone will. Most people live normal lives where they work and have a social life. Especially if you get older you realize what's more important in life. But that is different for every individual. Also control is the magic word here. As long as you are in control of your actions and behaviour then there is nothing wrong with getting or being passionate about a hobby like videogaming.

I think it all depends on the individual, really. Some people play games to forget about how shitty their life is and really have nothing else going on, and that's not healthy, IMO. For others, it's just a hobby that they enjoy when they have some spare time, and I think that's fine. I mean, sure... maybe there's more productive things they could be doing, but if they love gaming and it brings them joy, I don't see anything wrong with that. Life is too short to constantly work, work, work all the time.
Thing about games is they can be a great way to bring people together. For example, my gf and I don't do much gaming on our own (aside from casual phone/tablet games), but we LOVE playing together. We do other things too of course, but gaming is one of our favorite things to do together.

when you reach into into your early 20s the pressure to stop video becomes intense at least for me. Everyone starts getting married and getting jobs and youre like I dont want to get left behind and thats all it took after 6 years of addiction, i wasnt a kid anymore.Im 23 today and stopped playing when I turned 20 and honestly I only play games that require low commitment, so things like rpgs and mmorpgs scare the hell out of me. The goal of life is to be happy. Happiness is the ultimate reward in life and if you aren't happy then you have not got that reward. People who spend there time playing video games and from that happiness is achieved and sustained for a long period of time isn't wasted time and it shows that said individual has achieved there life goal. I would rather be okay ish in wealth and be happy with lots of video games than be quite well of but be bored to death being a lawyer for example. I see the creator's point as life is short and you should make the most of it but if happiness isn't there are you really doing what you want? Me being a Atheist, I have nothing to look forward to when I die so doing what makes me happy is key to my personal belief on my existence.

For many people tho (me included), gaming doesn't really bring happiness, just a constant stream of little moments if success from ranking up, hitting a headshot etc. But deep down I know those things are quite irrelevant and I could be doing something way cooler that actually made me happy instead of "satisfied". At this point gaming is just an addiction that keeps you distracted. Gaming in moderation is good way to have fun, but when you spend all of your time gaming, you miss out on so many other things that you might value more but are just unable to achieve because you're addicted to gaming

I was a mess when i used to play video games as a man ,thought i'm responsible, because of my job where i make hard decisions and responsibility is very high as i'm in charge of my team and even sometimes responsible for their lives... probably my point of view got changed because of my job and i looked at myself from other angle. Its probably hard to believe for you dear reader that a person like me, was addicted to video games, and yes i was when i had free time i was sitting on a chair for 10 - 12 hours at evenings, just playing video games.
Yes i believe i could become a much more successful as a person if i wouldn't be playing video games at all. I was addicted to counter strike game, i didn't care much about the world, and sometimes i was totally forgetting about myself, focusing mainly on that game. I was so wrong when i used to play video games, i lost one of my best friend from my childhood because of my fault, i lost so many good relationships and i m not able to restore them, i just lost them forever, i was so lost sometimes... i was crying... and suffering from depression. It was my fault, and once i said to myself i'm gonna quit this once and forever, luckly i was able to do it,i just started to communicate more and more with all the people, and amazingly i have turned my way of life in a completely new way. I know how hard it is for you, if you are addicted, i know how hard it is for you if you are alone, i know its not so easy to force yourself to go out even sometimes from your home because you don't know where to go, but i m gonna tell you, don't be afraid, and don't be shy. Now i can't imagine myself spending my time on evenings without friends and my girlfriends, i love driving, i love to talk with people, i love making people happy, every day is important for me now, i love my parents, i love to spent my time on the nature, i love traveling, if you are still struggling from anxiety just start planning your days, write a diary about yourself, be more active force yourself to go outside, force yourself to smile, and force yourself to love this world, you will start noticing that you are changing....
Wish all the best my dear reader, the hope is in your hands, don't lose yourself like that and start improving yourself, or all your life will go down into drain, every second counts, every hour is important...

That has been my life since High School. I didn't go straight to college. I wanted to take a break. What I did with my time? I just played video games. Even now I do. This is changing. I just built a fully water cooled PC a few months ago and I'm selling and taking a 50% loss to get paintball gear. Paintball was an old passion I'm going to pickup instead. Get a degree, hopefully in electrical engineering and not having the major distraction of gaming staring me in the face. I found a potential buyer for my computer and hope to begin this transition in my life. I denied this addiction, family and friends turned their back on me. I have come to accept it. This is me putting down the bottle. Some may laugh, I don't care. It's the same addiction as gambling.

I've tried this "quitting" and I'll share my experience...I quit video games because my studies were going bad... Everyone said video games were the issue but they weren't...It was the addiction you were talking about and I comquered it...So I started playing football and joined my school club to improve.I started liking the game and played it regularly until tryouts...My coach talked about me making it in the school team and stuff and saying I would do great! That sounded so cool to me and I was really happy...But then came the news that I wasn't picked for the 6 and 7 graders team as "Captain" and wasn't in the school team.It was so degrading and really hurt my feelings and after a lot of training my right foots muscle got pulled...And while I was just resting and giving it time to heal I just thought...Video games are so much better...I mean I never got discouraged while playing a game no matter how much times I failed...I never got injured...and I never had to "Impress" some coaches to just be good.A video game character would never hurt you unlike your teammates so why was I taking this pressure...For what? For my parents to see me do physical excersize? To not get pointed by other people? And I realized that you should never give up on something you love no matter what...And when it came to studies I just played on the weekend after doing my school work and my grades improved! There's nothing wrong with playing video games...Yes it's addiction is a problem but you can get addicted to anything...From drugs to studies...Looking back I don't regret even 1 minute I played video games because all they did was help me carry on.

I stopped playing video games for multiple reasons
    1. I did not have much control over how long i would play 6+ hours was my normal every day
    2. Videogames take alot of effort (input) but lesser results (output). For example in Factorio you would spend 8 hours + to achieve the end goal of launching a rocket.
    3. They is no endgoal, i could always make up a reason to play further.
    4. the industry coming up with worse ways to get money from consumers like loadboxes, season pass etc. I thought that Quiting video games all together would help more to not give them my money then to try to resist builing microtransations.
    5. It was a form of escapism, in combination with no control it means that it is easier to keep playing video games to cope a disappointing like rather then to find out how to cope(if possible) with the problems that lead myself to want to escape reality.

Like I have the potential to be an a student who actually has a future in life but I choose to be some loser who buys 100 dollars worth of rp and today I realized that I left in the middle of a game cause my parents were mad I was like Dang bro what am I doing with my life. I'm on spring break and my one goal was to climb to silver elo. What I could have done was study for tests and actually watch a movie with friends so your video kind of helps me realize all the stuff I could be missing out on and how negative league is effecting my life cause my eye sight is complete trash and basically no one talks to me cause I'm so focused on league anyways thanks for the video bro

I have a lot of fun playing video games, all of my friends irl are gamers too and we regularly meet up in person to play games and barbecue.
This suits me just fine, I don't really care about being super successful, earning enough so I can live comfortably is enough for me and I also don't really care about meeting other people because of my misanthropic and introverted personality.
I don't consider gaming any more of a "waste of time" than I do playing the piano and refining my skills at Zbrush, it's all the same to me.

I use to be addicted but I recently just quit because I just started high school and I need to focus more on work. If you guys were like me I recommend you guys find a sport you enjoy. Skateboarding is what helped me defeat my addiction, just practicing a new trick, getting better over time and trying to get enough street cred to get sponsored is a more healthy addiction. I play video games now and then but only for like 30 mins to an hour. Thanks for sharing your reasons for quitting video games. 👍🏾

Honestly, the reason I'm contemplating quitting playing video games in the first place is because:
    1. I feel there's no video game right for me out there. I can enjoy watching anything, but to me, doing anything; I just am disappointed and angered easily.
    2. I feel like I'm not getting anything really good out of them.
    3. I feel my time going away every time I pick one up. I hate feeling like my time is being wasted.

uploader sounds like he has benefitted from stopping gaming, Im not sure if I have though.
I was hooked on computer games for about 15-20 yrs. In the last few years I kinda got physically and mentally tired of it all and just play a few hours a day now for the last few years. Although I have some great memories of the gaming days.
Im not really much better off now though. I do more do more reading, TV, internet surfing, porn watching, eat more and other stupid stuff.
The point here is that Just stopping gaming didnt automatically make me a more productive and happy human as there are plenty of other wasteful things you can do aside from gaming and mostly they are less fun.
Really to better your life you need to somehow get some kind of motivation and drive /belief/ etc. inside you that's the hard bit for me.

It's a shame video game addiction isn't taken as seriously as many other forms of addiction. If someone abuses a physical substance people accept that as addiction over more abstract forms like addictions to video games, social media, texting, etc.
I've been a gamer since I was old enough to sit in front of a computer. Some of my earliest memories of playing video games was playing Lemmings with my dad on the home computer (yeah, that was a few years ago...). But starting around middle school to the present day I've struggled to keep it under control. There have been an embarrassing number of times where I've gone 24+ hours with no sleep just jumping from one game to the next, skipping meals, ignoring personal hygiene, making excuses to not go out with friends or family, calling in sick from work, etc. So I know from personal experience what you are going through and understand that video game addiction is not a damn joke.
I've tried going cold turkey before and failed, but one thing I'm trying now is substituting my video game time with more constructive activities like learning to read other languages. So far I can read and write basic sentences in Korean and I can also read Japanese (except for Kanji so far). My theory is if I can dedicate even half of the time and energy I spend on video games to learning something new I should be able to open a lot more doors than just sitting in front of a computer my entire life.

Phil Lewis it's a shame when you really actually think being addicted to Video Games is the same level as being addicted to shooting up heroin. Which leads to physical and health hazards. Addicted to anything isn't really a good thing. But it seems as though you blamed most this on video games instead of your personal responsibility and self time management and because of that stopped playing.

listen people u know whats also very addictive?having fun!we have to blame entairtenment now because some people are too into it?This is life get over it we are all "adicted" into something to a degree like work, cars, sex, sports, bodybuilding etc. u cant compare games to drug addiction lol if u really have a problem that affects you so much there are special services for that and since modern video games are a something new to most people ofcource we'l have some adicts haters etc. its someting new in human history anyways stay healthy first and go do something that u like if its videogames do that.my sdvice for addicts if u dont want to go to a help center for now get out more find friends who dont game at all or much and gradually reduce ur game time i think ul find out things about urself u can also get a job that involves people like in a restaurant, hotel , supermarket, and in my opinion ul slowly start to beat ur addiction good luck.

Playing video games is not a bad activity. In fact it's a form of entertainment that you're actively interacting with, which stimulates your brain. That can't be a bad thing. But of course just don't play excessively. Too much of anything is bad. Play in moderations. You said in the video "There's more to life than just video games". Yes technically that's true, but video games is a part of life now. Welcome to the digital world where every household owns either a PC, iPad, or console. Unless you wanna go live in the wilds to escape the digital world. With Virtual Reality coming into the market there's no escaping it. Everyone's gonna wanna play VR games or watch VR movies hahaha. Don't run, but embrace it. Trust me, I know.

Ever since I joined a college my interest in video games went on a constant decline. I began thinking outside the box and while most of my online friend strived for the leader board I questioned the immoral and predatory business practices the game's publisher. I even confronted my guild leaders with their questionable ideals but hit on deaf ears. They didn't like this at all and later on started picturing me as a rebel.
I completely ran out of touch with my gaming circles when I finished college and found a job. Now I enjoy chatting and hanging out with my colleagues. I now rent an apartment... I have never felt this free in my life before however getting there also was a frightening transition. Also I found new interests in my workplace and finances in general.
To sum it up, I have kind of completely forgot about video games. Life is just keeping me busy with more important stuff.
But when I play a video game I choose a quality title I find is worth my spare time. No more "junk food" like your everyday MOBA or MMO which are designed to keep you hooked. I have observed it with one of my closest friends. About one year had passed when I joined the workforce and he still keeps playing the same MMO with the same internet friends I used to play with. He told me what he eventually planned to do with his life but all he does is going to work and gaming all day. But if I called him out for it I would be portrayed as the hypocrite again.
BTW, none of them held me back or asked what's wrong when I left them behind. They were just like "mkay" and moved on. That's why today I describe people on the internet as mere acquaintances. They are no true friends.

Video games in itself are not bad. It's the amount of time spent playing video games that can potentially lead to problems. Like anything else, moderation is key. I used to play video games all the time, but as you grow up, you get bored of the same routine strive for new experiences and adventures. I'm an introvert, so going out is extremely difficult for me, but I do see the benefits when I visit my family and friends. It's worth it in the end and you feel much much better.

I've been feeling this way for like 4 years now. it's hard to sell my video game stuff now & it sometimes makes me go back but like instead now I fall asleep in addition to not being interested in gaming while I play the video game because I also feel like there's more to life but when I also attempt to go out there, I just become reckless because the folks you will always come across in life will always be judgmental in what you do. I accept this constructive criticism without a doubt but I sometimes let the negative impacts get the best of me and then this somewhat makes me discouraged to setting out bigger challenges for myself. not sure if I make sense with this post but gaming makes me feel stuck in life whenever I go back to it. I love the presentation gaming displays but I have that other side of me too that says I should be doing something "better" for myself.

Video games can absolutely be addicting up until the last year or so I would say I made gaming a priority. I was having a lot of fun. I’m 33 and I’ve been gaming since 1989. There were periods where I didn’t play. Examples would be junior and senior year of high school, I barely played at all while I was in the Marine Corp and I would say I picked it back up hardcore at around 24 years old. It helped me deal with my PTSD and I was able to channel all of my energy into gaming. It made me happy simple as that. But over the last 6 months or so I fell out of love with it. It’s simply not fun anymore. Not sure why. Maybe I aged out. Maybe I saw all of the relationships I let drift away. Maybe I hit a peak and so no point to it any more. It’s probably all of those things. Either way now that I’m older I see it as a new phase in my life. I’m sure I’ll game again someday. But for now I put down the sticks and I feel good about all of those years and I have zero regrets. Maybe I’ll pick up kite surfing or some weird shit like that.

Hey Yaron! Sounds like there's attachment between what you spend on something and whether or not you should engage with it, which is very reasonable. I think letting go of the meaning you've put with money and video games will support. From a practical sense, I think if gaming is not supporting the life you want, calling it quits may be a good idea. The decision is yours and yours only though! Good! People suck and I hate most of them anyways. Empty, pointless, untrustworthy turds most of them. You are not missing shit by simple playing video games. There is nothing wrong with them or wanting to play them at all. People will just use you and toss you or be fake pieces of shit. Im 40 and Im not stopping. No reason to. I just hope game developers pull their head out of there ass soon as this is by far the worst generation of gaming Ive ever experienced. Its like they lost creativity and innovation and passion...still Better than going out getting drunk and making stupid decisions and wasting money or getting hooked on drugs.

I only play video games cause I think of video games as my stress reliever. And after I have no stress then it's back o chemistry.

Quitting is definitely a weird journey for anything you do too much of. People get addicted because of enjoyment. It's sort of counter intuitive to stop doing something you enjoy but that's what is needed. Balance. Stay busy. Games are ultimately a form of entertainment to be appreciated. It's just that it can be so engrossing you lose sight of the big picture. Anybody that watches this video is considering the merits of quitting or trying to quit. We've either all been there or are getting there. Good luck everyone. I don't think I'll quit, but I'll definitely play less.
