*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

The lyrics being generally about an addict who needs to address transgressions obviously fits with the theme of the album. I think - in true Maynard style, though - there is also another more specific focus here:
    Pres. George W. Bush.
    • GWB is a former alcohol-abuser who claims evangelical Christianity helped him become a new man and overcome his drinking. (“With heaven's help, You cast your demons out”)
    • This spiritual rebirth enabled him to become a politician, and then President. (“Now you stand reborn before us all”)
    • His administration chose to enter the U.S. into a war in Iraq, with the foreseeable result being many deaths. (“I’m more than just a little curious, How you're planning to go about, Making your amends to the dead”)
    • Starting wars doesn’t really square with the teachings of Jesus, so GWB could be seen as a hypocrite. (“Your halo slipping down to choke you now”)
This may be reading too much into the song; but the timing (written during the run-up to the war, released during), lyrics, and the fact that Maynard also referenced the politics/events of the moment elsewhere on the album (‘Pet’) do tend to support the possibility.

30 sec in and I’m like, “he’s not gonna like The Outsider”.
Imagine taking someone’s life in a drunk driving accident and living your life looking for forgiveness and redemption. And then you find this song. Maynards haunting lyrics have a way of punching you in the gut. Powerful stuff man.

For what little it may be worth, I was a combat medic in Afghanistan for two tours. This song hits so hard and is so necessary. It keeps me grounded...for every instinct that wants to wave the flag, I'm reminded of the dead. Those that I could not save and those who I killed, there are no amends. Whoever you are, thank you for reading and allowing me a moment of confession and honesty.

Surviver’s guilt. I went through a period of time where I felt guilty for my mother’s death and ashamed that my life was going halfway decent. Making amends...was impossible. This song has brought me to my knees many a time and when I heard them do it live...good grief.
Billy does help with the overlap at the end in live performance.
So glad you didn’t skip it. The bass motion in this is heart wrenching. Hope you don’t skip any, frankly. Ride the gravy train, friend!

Wow. Ive had a very similar experience on two separate occasions. My uncle struggled with drug abuse so when he was released from prison and trying to integrate back, I was the person helping him through his struggle. He was recovering so well.. then one night he was having a bad day and I didn't pick up on it. Didn't feel like hanging out that night. I get that phone call early in the morning that he relapsed and OD'd. I blamed myself for years and sent me spiraling.. fast forward a few years I lose my mother. I fought to improve her health, get active.. drop the drugs.. and of course the one day I had a fight with her and left on bad terms she dies that night from heart failure. I still beat myself up for not doing enough.. leaving like I did.. not saying goodbye.. so survivor's guilt has plagued my entire teenage and adult life. I feel for you. Sorry about my life story lol but you are not alone if thats small comfort.

James Shunkey Jesus, that is rough. People that aren’t strong enough to help themselves cost others in some way. That hits, too, because depression forces you into that corner with little room to get out. The Noose at one time confirmed my right not to be here 10+ years ago, but now...it’s the opposite.

Passive was a hard one to listen to after losing my twin. One thing I found out after she took her life was that people didn’t wanna talk about it. Although unfortunate, there were people that went through the same thing and they have helped me grieve. Don’t forget you’re not alone and you can get through it.

This is my fav from the album because it hits home hard. I've had family members and family friends who were completely awful people under their vices but magically grew wings once they attended rehab/12 step programs etc. They separate themselves from their past and feel they are absolved of the wrong they committed because they see vice as a disease or affliction... but they are wrong. It was an active choice to take that drug, that drink, that gamble, etc. You are still that person. Glad you feel better but hiding behind Jesus won't make amends to all the relationships, friendships, families and lives you destroyed and are now dead. Get off your cloud and take responsibility for all the dead you caused.

Got people in my family that lived a fast and loose moral life their entire youth, now in their old age they're an evangelical Christian and what to go around telling everyone else how to live their life. Judging everyone for every wrong they do. They are truly horrible people.

  • @darkchiron
    @darkchiron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This song for me has always been about those people who live a really awful life, being a horrible person, then they find Jesus or whatever else and want to act like they're now some flawless person. Like they want to forget all the horrible things they've done in their life so they expect you to just forget about it, too. But from the person singing, I think it's a cold wake up to reality that you can't just act like none of that ever happened. And for the people who aren't here any more that you wronged, how exactly do you make it up to them? Moral of the story: Stop being a horrible person! :D

    Favorite APC song.
It's been said, Thirteenth Step is a stab at the 12 step program. Each song looks at a different perspective or phase of addiction. Beautifully diagnosed lyric analysis. This one's about a recovery process and almost mocks the idea that one can make amends to all of the victims of one's addiction.

This track live at Red Rocks is absolutely epic. You have to see it. Basically, before you react to another APC track, check to see if it is on the Red Rocks concert and please just fuckin do it. It is one of the greatest live performances of all time. As good as this is on the album it pales in comparison to the live at Red Rocks version.

  • @meganwoehl5277

I took a pretty similar interpretation, except maybe mine was a bit more judgemental. The image I get is of an addict recovering. Now they are just basking in all the praise and people are telling them how strong they are, but then Maynard comes along and he's like, well hey, not to throw you off your high horse but what about the trail of bodies and destruction you left behind? Like, you may have gotten clean but what about all the addicts you left to rot, what about all the people who overdosed because you got them hooked, what about everyone you climbed over to get on your pedestal. How are you going to make amends to them? I almost even get the sense that maybe Maynard (or his character in this song really) was one of the ones wronged, maybe one of the ones this person got hooked, and he is kind of this lingering reminder that life only got better for that person, but there is a world of suffering and pain right where that person left it.

It's funny you say it reminds you of the Deftones because I was just listening to a Deftones song I had never heard before and was like "wait, was that Maynard?" and it turned out it was. Just weird coincidence given that I'd just had a weird Maynard/Deftones moment. I absolutely love this song; the lyrics about a halo slipping down to choke someone. For me it's like a holier than thou person messes up and someone called them on their BS. Incredible sound and amazing lyrics.

I am sorry to hear that you've been through what you mentioned in the beginning of the video. I've been in a similar situation, myself, and I know it's incredibly hard. Thank you for being open with your viewers, however, so we can have a better understanding of who you are!
I saw in some comments that people are warning you about 'The Outsider' and the warnings are quite valid, honestly. I know you don't like spoilers for meanings of songs, so all I will say, however, is that Maynard wrote it from someone else's point of view, and not his own. If you do react to it, I will comment with a quote from an interview with Maynard where he explains what the song is about. Anyway, I've loved seeing you go through this journey with Tool and A Perfect Circle, so far, and I'm hoping Puscifer is coming up next as well! Enjoy it!

In poetry, punctuation in the middle of a sentence which demands a pause, like a period, is called a caesura. It's interesting to me that a song might utilize a caesura.
never thought about the Deftones sound before, but I definitely hear it now. A Perfect Circle live, there is a Premier Guitar Rig Rundown for APC that you could check out and get a better idea of how they do what they do live. Also, since you play guitar, Billy Howerdel has done some Riff Rundowns for them as well, (one is "Judith" and the other is a song you haven't listened to yet.)

Not sure you actually understood the song. This song is definitely not about a bad reaction to a break-up or lashing out at somone. He references various 12 steps of AA throughout the song. The song is about a person recovering from addiction and being “re-born”. Maynard is challenging that while it is great that they are better, how are they going to make amends with those that they can’t (ex: how does a drunk driver make amends with the innocent victims that did not survive?) Going through a program and considering themselves a new person doesn’t change the fact that they are responsible for taking someone else’s life.

With the album title and the lyrics, it sounds a lot like he's angry at someone in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction. He's very spiteful in his music, and tends to see the worst in people. It's a bit annoying because he's a smart guy, but so many of his lyrics sound like he's lashing out in an almost petty way

Orestes, The Noose, The Package and The Outsider are their best songs IMO. The Outsider will be a tough one for you, based on your comments at the beginning, but I still think it would be worth it.

    Jersh,
Based off your thoughts on the intro, you may want to skip "The Outsider". Might be personal. I think its a great song, but I don't want it to cause you pain.

do you only react to the videos the people on your patreon suggest? if that's the case and i totally understand it, what's the point of me continuing to be a subscriber on youtube if most of the content is not my cup of tea? i'm sure i'm not the only one expecting a lana del rey reaction 😩

    • @SuperJersh
      @SuperJersh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

All of my reactions come from TH-cam comments, if I do patreon requests in the future it wouldn’t change the fact that the majority still would as I like to see what everyone wants whether they support me financially or not, the only reason the latest lana Del Rey isn’t out is because it was copyright blocked, i intend to release it when I win the dispute, as far as why sub I can’t answer that for you except to say everyone knows youtubers need support to rise above the competitive space if u like what u see on someone’s channel watching, subbing, liking, commenting and patreon support all helps to make sure the channels u like stick around, thx for watching :)

@@SuperJersh - ah my bad i understand. i obviously love your reactions that's why i was being impatient about the lana one xD
      i will continue supporting regardless.
