When you get to the outsider i wouldn't recommend the music video for The Outsider as it's very similar to the Thinking of You video as it's from the same series of movies. I'd recommend the live version. Also if you get to "the Nurse who loved me. " It's a cover song from a band called Failure. But the song does fit the theme of an album.
God Damnit Maynard!! Are you over there singing about water AGAIN?!? Seriously though. I'm here eating my favorite ice cream, smoking my favorite smoke, listening to my favorite singer/songwriter and my favorite TH-cam reaction professional. Loving it.
I think it’s clearly a song about being in denial while watching someone else self destruct. You touched on that a lot... trying to act like nothing’s wrong and ignoring the smoke and smiling even as the person is already dead and turning blue. The line "close my eyes just to look at you" is intentionally paradoxical... you’re not really using your eyes to see the person, since you’re making up what they look like to you anyway (self deception). The seamless vision is seamless because he’s not really looking, and he’s “taken by it” or enthralled with what he's "seeing" because he’s willfully oblivious and only seeing the positive/normal.
Also, I always thought “call an optimist” is a nod to the phrase “call a doctor”. So instead of calling a doctor, the denial is so deep, they need an optimist instead. Some ppl will deny reality even if it means their own or someone else’s death.
If you enjoy good harmonies I think you will love Puscifer. Maynard and Carina were meant to sing together. It's like dessert for the ears lol. Side note being you are getting to the last few songs on this album. I know there's been mixed comments on the Eat the Elephant album. I personally think it's an incredible album musically, lyrically, and vocally (Maynard's vocals are supreme in this album). If you are not planning on doing the full album I would recommend listening to By and Down the River, Eat the Elephant, Feathers, Disillusioned, TalkTalk, and So Long and Thanks for the Fish. If you are planning on listening to anything off of Emotive I would suggest Counting Bodies Like Sheep, Imagine, When the Levee Breaks(specifically the Red Rock's version) and Passive.
Thirteenth Step is a concept album about the different aspects and perspectives of addiction, and the recovery from it.[13] The album's title itself is a reference to the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous.[10] Lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the band Maynard James Keenan explained the concept on the band's DVD Amotion, stating: "The songs on Thirteenth Step for the most part are about the various processes of addiction, behavioral addictions, chemical addictions, and each song is kind of sung from a different perspective. I have a lot of friends who've gone through a lot of these situations. Some of the songs are sung from the perspective of the actual drug, from the perspective of someone who has realized that they have an issue or a problem, also from the perspective of a person who realizes that if they don't do something they're going to die, a song from the perspective of a person who is in denial about a loved one, dying right before their eyes. And in the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."[14] Keenan, not having struggled with addiction first-hand, drew from experiencing it happen to others around him, such as Layne Staley, the lead singer of Alice in Chains, who died in 2002 due to drug addiction.[12] The song "The Package" is from the perspective of an addict, desperate for more, while "Blue" is from the perspective of someone having a difficult time dealing with the aftermath of an overdose.[8] "The Nurse Who Loved Me" is a cover of the song by Failure, originally featured on the 1996 album Fantastic Planet.
This is one of my all time favorite APC songs!! Because of the title I always picture that one bus scene from "In The Mouth of Madness" lol!! Your interpretation about the overdose was spot on btw!
Another one I’ve been looking forward to. A favorite for a very long time, hits me on a personal level. Right in the feels everytime. Lyrically so interesting. Great react as always. 🖤
'Mistook their nods for an approval' is a reference to heroin. 'On the nod' refers to users slipping in and out of consciousness, struggling to keep their head up. Hence the nods.
To me, this song is certainly about watching someone self-destruct in some way or another. Sure, the 'watcher' could be high, or they could also be in denial or just oblivious to what the other person is dealing with? I adore it, muscially, and I must say I am having so much fun revisiting all of these Maynard songs with you because I now realize that when I'd listened to them as a teen, I never really.. listened to them? I didn't decipher what the lyrics meant, I just loved the music, which is important but now that I have a deeper understanding of them, I appreciate them even more! So, thank you! Also, I've never watched Trainspotting (I should, however), but I love Pulp Fiction and Seven (which was the other movie you'd mentioned). I didn't watch either till I was in my early 20's, but Pulp Fiction was somehow hilarious and depressing, and Seven was just morbidly intriguing, though I love crime movies in general so I figured I'd like it anyway. Thanks for your reactions!
ty for watching and commenting, and for following me on twitch and for supporting me on patreon! i'll reach out to you thru patreon when i can to thank you as well! :)
My favorite color manifested into a song 😋 You actually went with trainspotting for the thumbnail.. Eiffel 65 would like a word with you. As for the meaning.. im not going to dive into this one because it triggers some painful memories. Seeing the life completely drained out of your loved ones.. and they're now just a blue shell. I'm still haunted by it. I'll leave it at that 😔
In my opinion... This song conjures memories of dealing with an addict on the wagon that's telling me everythings alright and they're happy but knowing how depressed they really are and wanting another fix.... Blue = depression, smoke = obscuring their own feelings to others, close my eyes just to look at you = the observer seeing the false happiness but knowing the truth.
S Jersh!!! My, dude!!! Hope all is well, as always! And i hope you do see this particular comment of mine : ). When you first made that Aenema connection... (LMFAO, yea im still laughing) Immediately after you recite the line, “learn to swim.” Your facial Expression cracked me up for the rest of the video! I was so sure your inner monologue was saying, “*facetiously* hmm... I’m very pleased with myself for catching that very well hidden, gem!” You kill me, sir. Spiral out.
I wonder if Maynard ever did learn to swim. He admitted in the commentary on the aMotive DVD that he hated making the 3 Libras video because the director put him in a pool and he isn't a swimmer. But that was a while ago.
Hey, enjoying your videos. If you're interested in checking out some more AURORA, I recommend the songs "under the water" as well as "winter bird". "under the water" features some interesting melody.
Do you pick up books and just randomly jump between chapters? There are collections of songs, and then there are albums. The latter is an almost lost concept these days, unfortunately. Sometimes an album is put together the way it is because it's telling a story and it's meant to be listened to that way, at least initially. To ignore that is, at best, to miss out on an experience. At worst, it's arrogant and disrespectful of the music and its creators.
i disagree obviously arrogance is telling someone who may be willing to listen to your music at all ever specifically how to do it. i see concept albums as marvel films. the tracks need to stand on their own but if you listen in a specific order you get extra gifts/easter eggs, just my thought process on it hope you're enjoying the videos :)
@@SuperJersh I gave you the benefit of the doubt by saying "at worst..." ;) I do enjoy your analysis at times which is why I'm still here, but it frustrates me that you miss out on certain experiences because of your intransigence. Just because an album is put together in a cohesive way doesn't mean it's a "concept album." The tracks do *not* need to stand on their own. That's where you're trying to make it be what you think it should be, but then you're like, "this is weird" when you hit the interstitial out of context. That's where it's bordering on arrogance. Yeah, you're free to listen and interpret however you want. All I'm saying is that you're missing out on a particular experience when you choose to do that with something that isn't just a container for an arbitrary collection of standalone songs. Your listeners are often only trying to help you have the best possible experience in that regard. Again, some albums are analogous to books that are broken into chapters, but I doubt you think chapters in a book should "stand on their own." Not sure why you insist on the same with music, except perhaps that you're a product of the iTunes generation that's basically been conditioned to think in terms of songs rather than albums. But then again (get the ok boomer ready), I'm old enough to remember bringing home KISS' Double Platinum on vinyl when I was 10 and listening to the whole thing start to finish, because that's pretty much what you did with vinyl and record players until you knew the tracks well enough to make it worth positioning the needle just right manually. Some albums are still made as if that were the case, and you may be missing something if you don't realize that and experience it accordingly.
@@deadohiosky1701 Yes I am one of those people who open a book right in the middle and start there 😏 Guess some people just want to watch the world burn. So I'm perfectly fine with him picking random tracks on a concept album.. Everything is fine (House burns around me) 🤫
@@deadohiosky1701 Songs don't present information in a sequential order like a book does, where you can only logically understand what's happening based on what came before. Sure you can argue they take you through range of emotion they've crafted, but remember that the songs were all each created in isolation to begin with. They are only loosely bound by the last minute decision the artists made on track order. It's the last thing they do before releasing an album... almost an afterthought. Yes, even in Tool's case. Don't believe me? Go talk to a record label A&R rep. In the case of Tool, they do sew them together more with the filler materials and sound effect carryovers, and surely they put more thought into the process than most artists. But with APC that just doesn't matter as much. The only exception IMO is maybe the last track should always be experienced last, since that's the taste the artist intended to leave in your mouth. And I don't expect you to agree... it's fine.
I believe it was written about an ex that was a heroin addict... just watching her demise. I remember reading it online, but then again you can't believe everything you read online. 😉 Seems to go well to me though. I believe Maynard has always been pretty straight, I've seen him in an interview where he says he can't even handle weed, cause the paranoia is too much for him.
Just when you thought a chance had passed, Jersh went and saved the best for last. I guess we know what to do now. Request the opposite songs we want. Reverse psychology. Don't react to Passive right after you're done w/ this album.
I always thought this was a song about a husband who’s wife is cheating on him and he ignores it (ignore the smoke, I don’t want to know) but eventually she admits to it, he snaps and strangles her. Which is super dark and possibly not at all what this song is about but that was my take.
Smoke = smoke screen? Would pull the lens out on the literal. Maybe the perspective of drugs and consequences. Lot of judgment and ignorance around that time, preemptive to the prescription drug epidemic.

I like how they tell a story thru the whole album! I like they named the album 13th step with only 12 songs leaving the 13th step for you.

So there was a music video contest for this song, (the winner and runners up were featured on the aMotive DVD release.)
Katatonia - Decima
Estrum - All I Need
Anathema - Flying

Definitely at the "watching someone OD" phase...
Type O Negative: Haunted
Chaos Divine: Invert Evolution
Igorrr: Opus Brain
Deftones: No Ordinary Love
If you've ever seen anyone do a heroin nod it's not a pretty sight!
For three years...

Yup, you pretty much nailed the meaning.... Great song!
I love that thumbnail!! Trainspotting is so fcking great
Choose life.
One of my favorite songs from this band.
Originally this song was called “Red”. Maynard sat on this song the longest because he loved the music so much he didn’t want to fuck it up.
I wonder if Maynard ever did learn to swim. He admitted in the commentary on the aMotive DVD that he hated making the 3 Libras video because the director put him in a pool and he isn't a swimmer. But that was a while ago.
you should try a song by the band Cursive "Excerpts From Various Notes Strewn Around The Bedroom Of April Connolly, Feb 24, 1997"
Watch the official video
ohh and Maynard really can't swim ironically Lol
The imagine cover by a perfect circle is way better than the original
That's why they didn't put it on the tribute album after APC recorded it for that... Would overshadow the original.
I don't think so. It's different, not better. Good, not better. Just in my opinion.
Eths - Crucifere
Yo Jersh. You don5have to explain yourself man. Just do what you do
The thirteenth step is relapse. Theres 12 songs on the album.
That’s a depressing interpretation. I always thought of the 13th step as being up to the listener, especially with the hopeful ending to track 12.
