Maynard plays coy but he’s said the reason he doesn’t stand in front in Tool is for the sound. Would guess APC is the same reason.
If you want to see maynard raw and front and center, listen to the old JC Dobbs live performance from tool.

You've been really unlucky with your song choices for 13th step. The opening track is an odd and low key one. And Crimes is indeed an interstitial. Every other track on the album is a banger, honestly.
If you want to see MJK out front and in full glory, do some live Puscifer songs.

Once ya get to the Puscifer videos you'll get to see a bit more of the man the mith the Maynard .
I recall Maynard (and other members of Tool, for that matter) stating explicitly that they consider their music the star of the show, not them. Beyond that, yeah, until recently Maynard has preferred to be very private. But he's been coming out of his shell more in the last 5 years or so. If you really want to get to know Maynard, you should check out the 4-part "Art of Work" series on TH-cam. It's startlingly intimate for Maynard.
Great recommendation. When people say he's pretentious, my guess is they haven't heard him speak very much, and definitely haven't seen him work.

i had some friends that tried to sneak a peak at his vinyard, he got both of them with paintballs lol. the people in town said he does that to nosey people. both girls took me to the concert when he recently went on tour last fall. i was out of my head. up front, 6 people watching out for me since im in a wheelchair. i got a full on, direct look from MJK and my friends, the 2 girls held up signs mentioning being shot on such and such a date, by paintballs from nowhere. i believe he almost chuckled but a grin passed across his face. i bet he would be a funny guy too if you were in his tight circle of trusted friends
Early TOOL has Maynard upfront and center. Their is also a TH-cam video of Maynard taking down someone who jumped up on the stage. Hey puts him in a rear naked choke while he continued to sing. It's amazing footage. ✌

I slept on the Stone & Echo album until just a few months ago. I assumed it would be like all other live recordings and disappoint me. Instead, I’ve been obsessed with it recently, especially The Package and When the Levee Breaks.

Especially if you're not going to do full albums, even of masterpieces like Thirteenth Step, let us help direct you toward songs where we can all maximize our enjoyment. It would be a real shame if any of The Noose, Weak and Powerless, Pet, Blue, The Outsider, or A Stranger were missed for a intermission or even a solid but not standout song like The Package.

Yes, Maynard has always played coy with the spotlight. Famously, he would stand with his back to the fans when Tool first started playing live. In other Touring years he would be obscured near the back of the stage usually next to Danny. I was actually surprised with this Tours setup with stages on both sides of Danny that were elevated giving you a really great view of Maynard. I think as he's grown up he's come to terms with his fame and the legion of 30 to 40 year olds that were changed by his lyrics and the bands music. But in general he's not the center stage rock singer you see with most bands.

Nicholas James I’m not saying your wrong but he seemed very confident and had amazing stage presence so not sure about him being coy,I’ve also watched lots of early opiate clips and while he may be facing the drums sometimes I don’t think it was that often
I have seen so many of these reactions and misinformation about MJK. So many people say he is singing back there because of stage fright. He has said in multiple interviews that he positions himself there because of the sound and interferences it prevents. Anyone who wore g-strings, bras and other insane clothing or lack there of isn't afraid of singing in front of people. As far as I can tell that live video didn't really show anyone for more than a few frames. Don't think MJK doesn't want to be shown.
@@paulyotwn Yeah I don't think anybody mentioned anything about stage fright. I just think his privacy in life and the emotion he expresses with his music make it a situation where he doesn't feel the need to be front and center. It's like if somebody tells you something super insightful or philosophical and then turns around and does a Doritios commercial. Sort of lose your credibility in the process. I think Maynard once his credibility to be at 100% at all times.
Awesome reaction as always. There are a few reasons Maynard does what he does, but one that doesn't get mentioned much and I saw him say this in an interview way back. He use to always wear disguises when in public, even at award shows and at concerts. He said in an interview that one of the reasons is he didn't want his kid's privacy to be invaded or life affected by his fame. Has always loved his privacy. So for a long time, you would rarely see Maynard's face anywhere. Didn't like doing interviews, always wore disguises, etc..Plus he thinks the band should get equal attention on stage so he doesn't want the spotlight. Plus the often mentioned anxiety issues. And I'm sure there is an artistic component to it too. It's just cool right?! Like it's super different and he is a very different/unique bird. Whatever it all is, I've always found it fit his persona extremely well in the band. The guy's a freak! lol and I love it! 🤘

Maynard has generally preferred the focus to be off him and more the performance as a whole..... which is why you'll see him in so many guises, not wanting to be the face of the band / project & instead, just being part of the ambience.

SuperJersh the cameras were probably used for I-Mag (Image Magnification) to display on the LED Screens so that the cheap seats could see whats happening on stage. The digital audio signal from the audio mixer is sent via 'DANTE' over CAT 5/6 to the digital video recorders. This is what I do it for a living. I set up the screens and cameras and switcher for I-Mag. It's a really fun job. ✌
Maynard always plays with amazing bassists. APC, through all of their 3 bassists, has always been so groovy. It's the hidden gem in their music if you can hear bass lol. Not everyone can :(.
He's said in interviews he stands in the back for better sound quality. I believe he's in the shadows just for the fact he wants the whole band/music to speak for itself instead of being the typical front man. If you want to see him more front in center/see his face lol I'd suggest Puscifer or early Tool.
As far as this concert goes (APC live at the Red Rock's) I would suggest By and Down, The Noose, and When the Levee Breaks. This concert in general is amazing and worth a watch/listen but those two songs are some of the best in my opinion.

Yep.
In a "normal" stage setup, with the drums and amps/cabinets behind the singer, the drum and guitar sounds bleed into the vocal mic like crazy. Having the singer next to the drummer (and behind the amps) minimizes that problem. Here, they get extra separation by having a guitarist between the vocal mic and the drums (though Billy's vocal mic is right in front of the drums, so...).

I've seen tool live twice, apc live twice, and puscifer live twice. At all the tool and apc shows Maynard was in the back shadows. Both puscifer shows he was front and center, but he wore a luchador mask covering his face for the entirety of one of them.
Also yes this was an official box set DVD made by the band. Also Maynard doesn’t want it to be about him. He’s just the voice, he wants the others to take the spotlight. In addition, he has said that his vocals and overall performance come through much cleaner when he stands on a riser behind the drums and guitar, that way the feedback from the guitar cabinets is not bleeding into his microphone.

I know this might not be the type of music you'd listen to but it's Ramadan for us Muslims and usually there's always a commercial that's very down to earth and touches important topics and this year it was about the virus spreading.

Ok PLEASE watch tool live in Philadelphia from 92 ...I say this because Maynard is in front and center and his facial expressions are priceless...I recommend intolerance from that show but it’s all tool so you can’t go wrong
To answer your question, yes, this whole performance was professionally shot and recorded and featured as part of a live box set released in 2013 just called “A Perfect Circle Live”. The performance itself was actually filmed in 2011 though
Jesus this was early in the morning to ninja an APC reaction lol I understand why you'd double up.. Crimes feels more like a segue. This live performance is probably the best proshot of this song and they nailed it like they were still in 2000. The harmonies and power in both their voices. Just a perfect storm of a performance. I wish I went to see this show 😕 It was live recorded August 2 2011 in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado then later released in a box set with a DVD of this concert in 2013.
Imagine singing your diary to a group of people that really look up to you...and each time you do, you might have to launch yourself into that potentially emotionally painful space. I'd wear a mask and would probably hide in the shadows while doing so too. That's a tiny slice of it.

Leno and Conan. There's a good live video of their tour with Two Inch Nail, it's almost an hour.

Orestes is my favorite song by them, and live at Red Rocks great! The harmonies and watching Billy Howerdel play is always amazing. Got the pleasure of seeing them life last year. If you get the chance, go see them! (Maynard pretty much stayed off in his own little corner then too)
This song goes into "Pet" then "Lullaby". They should be played together. You can just do Pet and Lullaby together next time.

Yes, the meticulously produced performances imbued Maynard with an disembodied ethereal
presence which he is. He is always so spot on in any performance, almost other dimensional.
However, watching him on Letterman or Leno or Conan, he's right there in front. It's as if they
think we'll see him really late at night and wonder if it really happened or if we believed our-
selves in a too stoned delusion.
I saw APC in 2018 and yeah they sound that good live. They literally sounded better live than their studio recordings.
I agree you don't need to check out every bands entire discography, it's just that most bands don't have albums where every single song is worth listening to :P.
For me Eat the Elephant only has 4 songs worth checking out, and you might see recommendations for Maynard's other band Puscifer, but i would only recommend 3 of their songs.
As for Maynard being hidden live it came as the band grew in fame and did larger shows, he'd rather be behind the rest of the band preferably in a shadow unless he's wearing a silly costume or something, i remember reading somewhere that to cope with the nerves of being on stage he'd pick someone in the crowd to stare at for entire songs, it's pretty obvious during this show th-cam.com/video/fScQo9jA9VI/w-d-xo.html.
He stepped forward a bit more for APC, maybe since the unknown Howerdel put it together he felt he should front it a bit more.

Maynard made a point of trying to not make. A perfect circle about him. He wore wigs and costumes all thru the first run of the band. The main writer of these songs is Billy Howerdel the lead guitarist. He wrote a lot of this as he was working as a guitar tech for Smashing Pumpkins on tour. He met a lot of people doing that and Maynard. They became friends and then formed the band. The first line up was not together long. But in this video and to present there is. James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins it really is a super group. Pusifer I think Maynard takes more of a front man style with.

this is why you play the album from front to back. SO it can become more cohesive when you go to each song. Just helping since this is one of the best albums they had.
He's been said that he doesn't want his kids to suffer for his fame. He would like to live a normal life, walking around town without being hassled. So he wears a wig onstage and stays out of the spotlight. I was at a concert for tool and he never once came out of the shadows. Even after the concert he ran past the front of the stage waving.

Maynard sees APC as Billy Howerdel's project, I believe. Kind of like how he prefers to just be 1/4th of the band in Tool, I just don't think he wants to hog spotlight.
Puscifer is his project. He is usually in rare form for live Puscifer shows.

Maynard James Keenan has been standing in the back and wearing costumes his entire musical career. The live video of Sober at Leeds or Reading or wherever it’s at is an anomaly. But he has and will be front and center, for instance Puscifer thrives on the silly costumes and stage designs-it’s kind of the point. When I saw APC live, opening for NIN, they were in front of a curtain, behind which was NIN’s entire backline/stage setup, so they didn’t have much room and he kind of had to be out front.
Something to keep in mind while listening to this album, Billy Howerdel wrote most of the first album himself without much input from Keenan. Now that Keenan is a permanent member how much of a driving force has he become? Has Howerdel taken a backseat, or are they working together on the Thirteenth Step, (and then on the subsequent eMotive & Eat The Elephant?)
I am interested in hearing what you think of the evolving sound of this band, (especially when it comes to the guitars.)
BTW, you may have noticed, different bassist and guitarists in that live performance: Matt McJunkins ,(who I saw live with Poppy in Feb.,) on bass and James Iha, (of Smashing Pumpkins fame,) on second guitar. The Red Rocks DVD came out in 2013.

Speaking of forgetting to turn off the mic; in the song Part Of Me by Tool, in the very beginning before the song starts, you can hear someone saying “Yeah. Ready.” Then maynard chimes in: “I was having fun sitting down having a cup of coffee but now I have to sing." It’s very quiet but it’s there
Contra what a few others are saying, and although I think most of what's being said is right for the most part, Maynard hasn't "always" lurked in the shadows on stage. That's something that really started in earnest around the time Tool released Lateralus. Before that, he was very often well-lit, in the front, if not at center-stage. Now, he did still often adorn random costumes and outfits, but there was a time that there was a pretty good chance you'd catch him front-and-center with little more in the way of "get-up" than a little body paint.
You could see things starting to change sometime during the tour(s) that followed the release of Ænima. I'm sure it's no coincidence that this started to become more common for him when they really started gaining the popularity and cult-status that would follow them up until now.
I think, like a lot of artists, Maynard always held a little anxiety about being idolized in the ways that he has become over the years, and made a pretty decent effort to try to compartmentalize his personal life for a while. Though it still seems he holds onto a bit of trepidation about fans getting too close to his personal life, he's definitely let his guard down quite a bit over the last decade. He's probably granted longer and more in-depth interviews, videos, etc. in the last five years than he had in all the previous years combined.
