I just watched the whole video and really liked it. Thanks for the mention!
For me, Tails of the Sun was a pioneer in the survival game genre, standing out for its unique approach. Reflecting on the first time I played it, the experience was unlike any other game I had encountered at that point. The world was vast, filled with secrets waiting to be uncovered. Growing up, I spent countless hours exploring, discovering hidden places within the game, and noting them down. It's a game that reminds me of games like ARK and Minecraft today.
It's a joy to be reminded of such a nostalgic game, thanks.

Thx! This video was pretty Experimental too haha.
Experimental games rarely work out, but I think they're necessary to push genres. Like you said, I'm not 100% sure ARK exists without games like this.

Seems like Kazutoshi got something out of making this game, even if it can be hard to get that out of playing it. Really, I think that's what art truly is: an expression of the artist, which exists primarily _for_ the artist.

Thoroughly enjoyed this look on one of the weirdest PS1 games out there. I found out about this game through Gaming in the Clinton Years, and its graphical style and theme really beckoned me to take a closer look. I'm glad I did! Honestly, I think it's a pretty good game, even if stuff like the constant caveman naps and the frame rate get in the way. Exploring the world is a blast, it feels so beautifully vast and there's so many neat landmarks to find. I also can't get enough of the offbeat and oh-so funky soundtrack! Really dig the weird face paint many of the later cavepeople have as well. So much strangeness to enjoy.
It's ironic that, in attempting to make a "not-fun" game, the director and his crew made one of the most enjoyable and unique gaming experiences of all time, to me at least. I cherish these oddities, as many quirks as they often have they make up for it in leaving a lasting impression. Tail of the Sun certainly did that for me.

I really appreciate it. I'm moving the channel in a way to cover some more unique and forgotten games + Retrospectives. Have any recommendations?

I rented this game a long time ago, was confused, but figured out that I was supposed to be collecting mammoth bones at least, haha. For sure moved on to some PS1 gem and never ended up renting this again, but thanks for illuminating this weird old memory for me.

The original title was "That PS1 Game You Don't Remember The Name Of" haha. I feel like most people who played it remember it but not the title or wtf it was about.

I really like that weird off-beat music. It's common for a lot of Japanese games, but yeah - I don't know what I'd call it. Electro-Jazz-core? Haha. I love weird games like this. I was originally going to be doing weird games as a 'theme' for my channel.

My brother got me this for a birthday present when it came out. I thought it was a horrible game. Now as a 38 year old I kind of wish I had it again

Im unsure what to gather from your analysis here - art is subjective, but video games as an art form usually entail satisfaction from overcoming a challenge. It doesnt seem like this game is very enjoyable, just arduous. I think even a game meant to invoke misery like Spec Ops The Line can be fun in an adequate sense. Although I guess this games intent comes from the heart? The dev talking about an "anti-game" reminds me of LSD Dream Emulator, which was an equally absurd game with opaque meaning, but considerably more visually stimulating.
Regardless, this is certainly not a game I would have found had this not been recommended. Your sly humor is also charming, reminds me of my own video humor, subbed!

The game has a challenge or goal (climb to the sun by collecting tusks. But yeah, like you said and what I hope I conveyed in the vid, it is super repetitive. The initial challenge is that you're weaker than mammoths, but once you get the 2nd weapon, it's ridiculously easy. So all the time consuming pivots to traveling, which paired with the constant frame drops, is boring. The best part is when you first start and are learning and exploring.
I love spec ops! Glad you enjoyed the vid. It was meant to be a quick look at this weird game I played at a friend's house like 15 years ago, but turned into a bigger thing once I started looking into the development. I'm still not sure how to title it or sell it to people lol. But it's so interesting I needed to make it.

I think a better word than 'fun' here would be 'engaging'. Fun has purely positive emotional connotations, which does not fit what a game like Spec Ops tries to convey. Entire genres (in and outside of video games), like horror, exist primarily to make you feel emotions that are not positive, but the artistry in how they make you feel that way are still easy to appreciate.
Tail of the Sun seems to have just had an ill-conceived gameplay loop and length. As Tunuh said, it's not trying to be unfun... it's just interactive media has more pitfalls that are harder to avoid

Excuse me but why didnt you cover the other 9 endings and explained the conditiond required to achieve each one. As, well as trying to explain how do each outcome relates to how you beat the game.
Btw, the ending that put in was the nirvana ending (you transcended existance, thus you were everywhere despite no longer having a physical form)
