Whenever I hear SF2 mentioned, the thing, or rather quote that instantly pops to mind is "GET THIS DOOR OPEN, NOW!" Yeah, that level kind of left an impression.
the parachute part is necessary to unlock secret weapon case at end of the map man (top at wounded man near flare). that little detail is the part of its charm
fun fact : The parachute sectiopn at the start of the game can be used to land ontop of the big rock you're team is huddled around where you can find a early weapon if my childhood memory serves correctly!!
the real reason the parachute is in the game is that if you guide gabe quick enough to the ledge above the soldiers you can get the H11 from a box, its one of two H11's hidden in the first level, the other is in a cave beneath the waterfall where u meet chance for the first time, grabbing that one will unlock content for the multiplayer. the H11 is actually the H&K G11 in real life a prototype weapon that actually uses caseless ammunition and a complex internal system. it never entered full production due to the political changes of German reunification and lack of procurement contract. Only 1000 units were ever produced, some of which made their way into the hands of the Bundeswehr. Ultimately, the German armed forces replaced the G3 with the G36. in game it boasts one of the fastest firerates of any gun in the game alongside the G18.
This is the nicest comment I've gotten 🥺. Thanks! Lemme know if you ever have feedback or particularly like or dislike parts of a video. Working on SF3 atm.
After playing through the trilogy in 2023, Syphon Filter 2 is my favorite of the franchise. The 1st one had a few more open missions, but I enjoy a well done linear game. Man I miss the Sony that made games like this. It's already been a decade since the last Killzone. More so for games like Syphon Filter, Socom US Navy Seals, Resistance, etc.
Thanks! I finished the game and am writing the script and editing now. It's a pretty big tonal shift because of some controversies and stuff about the game itself. I hope it's not too much of a downer, but I also want to be honest with my thoughts. It should be interesting either way, so I hope you'll let me know what you think once it's out!
Great video. By the way. Playing through SF2 again, I discovered something from the bridge section. First, disarm all the bombs without taking out all the guards. After disarming and you get spotted by guards, one will radio command saying to detonate the bridge. Command responses by saying they can’t. It’s always cool to find little touches like that.
There's so many of those moments too! Teresa has some fun lines if she gets to shoot Stevens at the end and when you get gregorov out of prison there's a hidden enemy on a cargo truck that you don't see unless you sneak past the wall 😄
We had syphon filter 1, 2, 3, omega strain, dark mirror and Logans shadow. There was also a multiplayer title but it wasn't really a syphon filter game unlike the others. This is a series I loved as a kid growing up.
I should've mentioned it, but he didn't come up with the premise he was talking about. It was made up by some producer I couldn't find the name of, before Garvin, Ross, and Ham joined. They scrapped it but kept the name. And changed the game to be an action spy shooter. Then made some levels, and then Garvin had to write a script that justified the levels.
Sf2 has always been one of my fav ps1 games! It has that gritty real world atmosphere and jamee bond level of actionhero vibes that go super well together. I hope we get something from bend with the series again someday, either a reboot or a remake like the tomb raider games ^^
Excellent game. And excellent review/retrospective. This is one of my favourites. I played it recently and it's still awesome. The Syphonfilter saga is the best from Eidetic/Bend Studio. Even the PSP games were awesome. They worked on Resistance Retribution too, which is one of the best games from that saga (maybe the best one) Another thing on the SF games that were revolutionary for the time is the ammount of diversity in the cast of main characters. You've got an american and a chinese woman as playable but you've also got Teresa (She's from native american ancestry i guess) and Lawrence Mujari (an african freedom fighter) The games were made years before all those topics were on the front row. Days gone was fine... I mean, it's not great, the story is meh and the characters were insufferable, but the core game it's fun. The game is really bad structured, since the best feature (the horde combat system) is relegated to the final parts of the game. The departure of John Garvin from Bend Studio was... weird. He's now in some kind of studio called Liithos which never released a game and launched some NFT bullshit... Red Flag.
I'd love to cover the Resistance series but no PS3 or easy way to play those games. You're right about the diverse cast. Every John Garvin interview I've seen, he'll usually mention it, but it really seems like it was unintentional. He grew up around a lot of different people, so I think it's just him writing what he knew. The game and marketing never called attention to anyone's race or gender. Lian Xing not being a damsel in distress is also something I really liked in this 2nd game. The game's story resolves around saving her, but you still play as her for half of it, and she fights until she literally can't anymore. Another writer would've made weak and someone to pity. I didn't care for Days Gone, then I loved it, then I hated it lol. The story flubbed the landing so hard. You can tell the game was butchered during development and ran out of money. I was so tempted to make a video about it because I had strong feelings and so much to say, but I really want this channel to focus on Retro Sony games. Yeah I saw that. I get the sense he doesn't really know what NFTs are. I hope so anyway. It seems dead anyway. Haven't heard anything since the "announcement". I think John Garvin would be best placed working in a small/medium sized team making a new IP. He's a self-admitted asshole if he's the boss, and like Kojima, I think he needs strong people around to tell him no and help steer his writing power where it should go, which is probably what Jeff Ross provided when they were together at Eidetic. Meanwhile Richard Ham just seems like the nicest, chillest dude ever lol. Every interview I've seen him in, he just seems like he's having so much fun. Now he's just doing his own thing with youtube and board games which seems wildly successful and popular. I hope they all get back into games eventually though. I'd be so curious to see what they want to make. I've been tempted to email those three to ask questions about Syphon Filter, but really I have no burning questions. They've all done pretty indepth interviews, sometimes multiple times. And I don't wanna bug them just to do a dumb video cameo.
@therayldeal6683 sry, I wasn't implying you didn't know. I was saying the implication out loud. I didn't know there was a specific word for it lol. Ik allude. Never heard allusion before. Makes sense.
9:45 The Military Police officer showing clemency to Lian is a narrative beat that shows the player that despite Lian and Gabe being on the lam from the US government, there are a lot of potentially deadly enemies gunning for them who should not be harmed. Syphon Filter was THE game series that, as an 11-year-old - I was obsessed with! I loved the series - I even like the half-baked Omega Strain. Believe it or not, I was able to hack my PS2 back about a decade ago and emulate the online servers so I would play with people online to experience it all and get through the missions to unlock stuff. A lot of special moments were tied to this, and when 3 came out I'd expected the Multiplayer to be a lot better. Me and my brother were going to have our friends come over and we even scraped snacks together, got it first day and - it only supported two players! No bots either. If you don't kill Stevens quick enough after he surrenders, one of two will happen: 1. Teresa kills him for you before she tells Gabe he's getting slow for his old age. 2. Stevens shouts "idiot" before getting back up head shots both Teresa and you without fail.
Theses scenarios are not random; it depends on whether or not you pick up Stevens weapon after he drops it. Scenario #1 if you pick up the weapon and Scenario #2 if you don't.
I loved the game at the time (i still have all 3 for the original PSX) but good lord SF2 was -difficult- The trick sniper shot where you had to time the two guards crossing just right to take both of them out with one bullet.

If you have a Playstation 4 or 5, you can play the re-releases of Syphon Filter 1-3! They added widescreen support and trophies. It's free on PSN Premium too.
you can find a widescreen fix online to get the target cursor/fire effects. its a common issue on emulators for most ps1 games. or you can disable widescreen outright to fix it as well.
I have been called bad before. Many have said I do things that are not correct to do. I don't believe in talk such as this. I am nice man, with happy feelings. All of the time. First, a joke. What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord?
There are a few Easter eggs, but I can't find anything definitive. I thought I remembered an interview or tweet where Garvin said it's not the same universe, just an Easter egg, but can't find it. I should ask him on Twitter. If you have any proof, I'd like to see it. I can't find much info either way.
@@PlayStation_Paradise Oh, for sure. There are a couple of games that I think are pretty underrated and don't get nearly enough attention. - Brave Fencer Musahi (PSX) - Silent Bomber - Ehrgeiz - Parasite Eve - Fear Effect 1 (PSX) Just to name a few ideas for you.
SF2 and SF3 should have been released on PS2 because these games could have been further developed thanks to the console's capabilities. I don't know why the developers decided to release it only on PSX
From what I remember in interviews, Sf3 was originally going to be released on PS2 and an online only game like omega strain, but Sony wanted them to make another single player game and they were likely stuck on a 3 game deal on PS1 still
SF2 came out before the ps2 was released to the west so it made sense. Sony messing up SF3 and forcing it to be a downgraded ps1 game was a big blunder however.
tbh i realy liked SF3. didn't knew people didn't like that game back in the day. i played SF2 and it was awesome and played 3 and it felt as awesome as 2!
I think people liked 3, but not as much as 2. Especially since it came out when the PS2 was already out and it just seemed like more of the same. I'm actually pretty harsh on it because I think it's not only more of the same, but worse in several ways. I'll talk about it in the upcoming vid tho. Which SF is your favorite?
I loved the first two games, and the third was even OK. The parachuting scene at the beginning of the first mission was, I think, just for the wow factor. Like you said it didn't really serve any purpose but I think they just did it because they could and because at the time it looked pretty cool
Time for some blasphemy lol SF2 is easily my least favourite PS1 SF game. It had too much stealth for me and I hated all headshot lock on making you have to roll around all over the place.
Correction: 35:50, is supposed to be Teresa, not Lian. I messed up the meme!

H11!

It had one of the best lock on systems for a 3rd person (handgun experience). Amazing 360 degree aiming with a G18.
2 was way better than 3. 3 was like a dlc for 2.
Do a retrospective on Syphon Filter 3 also, it's way different from SF 2 in alot of ways but adds a new type of storyline of some sort...
you can find a widescreen fix online to get the target cursor/fire effects. its a common issue on emulators for most ps1 games. or you can disable widescreen outright to fix it as well.
A new word for killing…Bad and wrong… “Ba-Dong!” (Kung-Pow Enter the Fist)
Yaaaassssssssss
slay...slaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Something between bad wrong, badong. Killing is badong.
KUNG POW!
I have been called bad before. Many have said I do things that are not correct to do. I don't believe in talk such as this. I am nice man, with happy feelings. All of the time. First, a joke. What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord?
@@PlayStation_Paradise my ass niaaaaa
@@PlayStation_Paradise …….. my ass! *betty laugh*
childhood favorite of mine, hahah cracked up at the SF as no one calls it
Does anyone call it SF? lol. I just didn't wanna keep using the full title while writing the script.
I loved this game
Love the video! SF 1 actually took around 2 years from start to finish (may actually be a little bit longer, but need to double check my info).
Appreciate it!
10:17 this is one of the times when I have laugh the loudest watching a youtube video. Thank you, sir.
lmao I forgot about that joke.
@@PlayStation_Paradise top tier material. Liked and sub, by the way. Love your PS1 videos.
Loved this game wish they made more
Series ended after 2 unfortunately. Idk why they didn't make more.
There was SF3, omega strain, dark mirror and Logans shadow.
The best bet/hope is for a remake of the 1st since the story did end on logans shadow.
imagine playing this game that ends on a cliffhanger and then not playing the 3rd game until 6 years later like i did.🤣🤣
You're talking to a Halo 2 vet! Lol (I actually didn't mind the cliffhanger cause I loved the MP so much).
Fun fact: This takes place in the same universe as Days Gone, so logan failed his mission
There are a few Easter eggs, but I can't find anything definitive. I thought I remembered an interview or tweet where Garvin said it's not the same universe, just an Easter egg, but can't find it. I should ask him on Twitter. If you have any proof, I'd like to see it. I can't find much info either way.
lol great review, very funny and entertaining
I appreciate it! Any other games on PSX/2 you're interested in seeing retrospectives for?
@@PlayStation_Paradise Oh, for sure. There are a couple of games that I think are pretty underrated and don't get nearly enough attention.
- Brave Fencer Musahi (PSX)
- Silent Bomber
- Ehrgeiz
- Parasite Eve
- Fear Effect 1 (PSX)
Just to name a few ideas for you.
Thanks for the video. So nostalgic
Thx for watching!
LET’S DANCE!
Dodge roll, taser. Dodge roll taser.
Being a damsel in distress wouldn't diminish her as a character.
Theresa that's bad
SF2 and SF3 should have been released on PS2 because these games could have been further developed thanks to the console's capabilities. I don't know why the developers decided to release it only on PSX
It's simply: to cut costs and maintain the surreal (for today standards) low budget and 1 year development cicle
Maybe, but thank heavens they gave us this amazing Trilogy to enjoy in our Ps1
@@PlayStation_Paradise i remember most of the criticism is because the game became less stealth and more action, but nothing more than that.
is this emulation?? why is the aiming cursor to the left a bit??
Yes. 2D elements can sometimes be iffy in games.
@@PlayStation_Paradise fair enough
Killing is badong
U reading my thoughts here 🫡
delta force 2 have a train level :D not very good one but still train :D
Fellow Delta Force 2 fan!
How do I get the second part?
wut
You can buy on PS4 or 5
insert disc 2
Killing is.. badong
But first...a joke....
@@PlayStation_Paradisewhat do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord?
@@WolfPlisken My ass! Nyahhh hahaaaa
I loved the first two games, and the third was even OK. The parachuting scene at the beginning of the first mission was, I think, just for the wow factor. Like you said it didn't really serve any purpose but I think they just did it because they could and because at the time it looked pretty cool
Agreed. 1 and 2 are goated. 3 is meh but a decent action game. Yeah, I feel like the first 2 games made you think "damn, the PSX can do this?"
killing is badong😂
Opposition
I failed 9th grade and got my family banned from movie gallery over this game. All worth it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
But i wanted the dragon😢
Lol snake would one shot gabe x]
Your aim doesn't match the target. That triggers me so hard
Lol. It's due to the emulator. Widescreen can mess up 2D assets.
Time for some blasphemy lol
SF2 is easily my least favourite PS1 SF game. It had too much stealth for me and I hated all headshot lock on making you have to roll around all over the place.
Diet metal gear solid
▪️
metal gear solid?
🟥
You're dead wrong if you really believe that.
Nah this shit was fun, and in its own way
Do you have a twitter
