      To be fair, the only reason why they got away with swearing is because Japanese doesn't have any "swear words" so Japanese media treats English in the same way if it's not a translation. That's why the original version of Sonic X has Sonic swearing in English

      Ambitious Japanese games don't really come to the West much anymore because they could be considered money holes. They wouldn't make enough money back in the West to justify localizing it. It was easier to do that in the PS1 and PS2 era because games cost less money to make back then, but nowadays they'd lose more money than they'd make.

    • @dogmendogmen
      @dogmendogmen ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@beatziegraham6928It IS Japanese. If the question was a matter of exclusivity rather than origin, Katamari is still a terrible example. Namco had no plans to even release it in America because of how Japanese it is, and only ever did because the IGDA brought it to GDC, causing it to get tons of western media attention and pressure on Namco for an international release.

      Wattam(another game by the same creator, which has the Prince from Katamari in it as a playable postgame character) is also so bizarre yet so charming and happy. It only takes around 3 hours to beat unfortunately and it does have some major glitches, but I like to turn it on occasionally just to mess around with it since it does have a bit of a sandboxy dollhouse quality to it post-credits wise. I once went on a research binge investigating all things PS2, so I was aware of this game even before it appeared on Vinesauce. I couldn't wrap my head around it back then, and I still can barely do so now - HOW did this game happen? WHO MADE THIS? It was clearly made in Japan, had all the leanings of a Japanese absurdist comedy in a cutsey super-deformed style, something along the lines Super Milk-Chan, and yet the ENTIRE game is in English with only subtitles for Japanese speakers. On top of that, the script itself is perfectly adequate when it comes to the fluency of the English, which tells me that at least one of the people in charge of directing this entire thing HAD to be a native English speaker living in Japan. I would so love for somebody who was at the heart of this game's conception to come forward and explain just what the HELL was going on at the studio at the time, it would be such a fascinating topic.

    • @Diwasho
      @Diwasho ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't really get the impression that Alvion had a native speaking writer on their team, the dialogues may seem clean and grammatically sound but they still feel like something a Japanese mind would wright, it's bordering on Engrish without actually being Engrish. To be fair, plenty of Japanese people know fluent English, it's easy to forget but some of the biggest game series with fully English scripts like Resident Evil and MGS were written entirely by Japanese developers.

      Yup, people blinded by how good the graphics and gameplay are in TLoU2 seem to forget the story is an unfocused, mean spirited mess. Maybe Neil shouldn't have fired all the good writers at Naughty Dog; he's clearly not good enough to carry head writing duties.

    Regarding the Eric Cartman voice in Japan, I don't think that guy had anything to do with it. Cartman is actually played by Lilico, a Swedish-Japanese TV personality. In the movie Cartman is played by some guy called Tetsuya Yanagihara (he's from Osaka. They made the bizarre choice of dubbing the movie in Kansai dialect)

    I played through this to completion recently; I can't believe how absolutely fucking bizarre this game is, but man, does this game have some banger songs. Also the difference in voice acting is staggering, which is made weirder by this being an 'in house' translation. Like, Lolo is so much less annoying in japanese, I'm curious about the choices... But oh well. Yippie yo.
