Barlows in Richardson (Dallas) TX has a great online parts catalog for lure making...all types of spinnerblade types including the above...I don't like dealing with liquid lead, so their parts selection is awesome...
One tip I might add is use a knife to clear the excess powder paint on the hook tie. When you use pliers you can mar the hook tie and you can get line breakage at the knot. Great video!!
Been wanting to get into doing this and pouring my own soft plastics, too. Seeing that street sign in the background convinced me to follow ya. My Brother's a guide up there and I sure miss that GL fish'n.
I'm having signifigant problems with keeping BOTH wireforms in position to make a clean pour. The eye wireform is falling into the Sparky Jig body cavity and the bait keeper is not staying in place. PLEASE do you have any suggestions. I'm using Spinnerbait hooks in the 2/0 thru 6/0 size. Thanks for any response !!
Lol. I know my phone is spying on me. I just turned a Megabass body balance and a strike king squadron into vibrating heads and only told my neighbor via text last night and this video pops up today. Thanks for the video . Hopefully mine will work lol
Can't wait for tomorrow and the SAP ! LOve the VIDEO going to have to get some bait making equiptment. Maybe links to where to buy everything used. thanks!
I don't have the ability to pour my own lead so I just use a D&M custom baits Piranha Swim Jig with a Queens Tackle Switch Blade. Totals about $8 per bait and you get a Gama hook, great colors, and a direct connection to the head. Really solid baits
Xlnt Video !!! Under 5 Dollars ? Seeing as you're sourcing your components in bulk, you're probably making the bait for less than $2.00 ! Great job Sir ! Robert Bently George
Awesome channel man! I’m in the process of putting together a little “bait laboratory” at my house and look forward to trying my hand at these. I was wondering what modifications you made to your mold to accept that trailer keeper though?
I'm having a significant problem after about pouring and power coating about 35 heads. The extra lead under the eye was cleaned with an Ignition Point File. The problem is that after placing the blade on the eye I'm now not able to close the eye far enough to PREVENT the blade from slipping out of the space between the eye wire and the jig body. I tried to close the eye with pliers and that caused the powder coat to show marks from the pliers. I then tried using a small hammer and placing the jig on a wooden table and the eye still is open. I'm quite frustrated and don't know how to close the eye. Any help would be appreciated.
I'll do a short video on it, but I laid the hook in the mold and put the bait keeper right next to it, then took a deadblow hammer (similar to a small plastic sledge hammer) and hit the mold on the metal a couple times. This created an indent where both will lay now side by side. This isn't probably the "right" or "best" way to modify a mold, but it works
Would you be willing to tell me how you modified your mold for the bait keeper? I have the same mold and struggle getting a good pour with the bait keeper in place. Thanks
I’ve placed the hook and baitkeeper in the mold and placed the mold on a table, then I hit the mold with a deadblow mallet. The mold will create an indent of the baitkeeper
I'm having trouble with the lead covering the shank of the hook. Not sure if its not hot enough? its almost like it gets stopped at the eyelet. Any advice would be appreciated. I am using the same components , pot and mold etc.
another trick is to use a brush and put just a bit more (powder paint) on the head in front of the eye, that way when it bakes it encapsulates the end of the eye really good.
I'm gonna experiment with "Pull Weight", because i did buy the items in the vid, except the hooks, i got the curved eye loop, which i'll experiment with. But i'm curious what the Pull Strength would be for that "Underspin Loop" since it doesn't appear to insert into the eye of the hook you use. I'm used to bending wires, so like i said i'll experiment but really great vid and clear image makes the world of difference. Gonna scope out the red craw vid next :)
I did at first because the mold wasn’t closing completely. By taking a dead blow hammer, I tapped on it to help expand the eyelet so the mold would close fully
Ben, what's the nomenclature for the blades on Alibaba? I have been trying to find those myself. I have been doing the same as your video for the past 2 years.
I enjoyed this and found it informative, but I am not going to buy a lead pot, oven, moldes, etc. Was just looking to fix a chatter blade on a weedless swim jig.
Do you think there's a way to make a chatter bait for vertically jigging? I fish lake trout using a vertical presentation. Lake Trout often love to chase lures retrieved straight up. I imagine dropping a 2 oz jig 100 feet then straight retrieving it will get them to chase. Any suggestions? Just found your channel....loving it
That’s a great question and something I’ve never thought of. The Berkley vibrato or a blade bait is the closest thing I can think of but obviously there’s no skirt on those
@@BaitMakingChannel I do make my own blade baits, so they're definitely a good option for my situation. My lure crafting journey, shall we call it, began with fly tying. I strictly fly fished for 10 years, but then made my way back to spinning gear once I struggled with the limitations of fly gear on a kayak. I started tying hair jigs, then moved onto spinner baits and blade baits. I love tying jigs, hence my desire to find a way to build a hair jig that's 2-3 oz and incorporates a blade for vibration. Now my brain is stuck on chatterbaits and scrounger jig heads.
@@matthewbeckwith663 I've seen guys fish 1oz chatterbaits in 20+ fow, so I'm sure you could utilize a bigger bait and get it even deeper. I think your journey is really cool. As I get into this more and more, I'm getting to the point where now I'm tying flies/marabou jigs, so it's interesting to hear your path into lure making
Awesome video. Interested in trying to imitate the zMan diezel chatter bait for saltwater. Any input on wether or not this open eye will hold up to a snook or redfish?
Has the lead on one of these ever broken and you lost the fish? Something about the hook and the blade connection only being held together by lead makes me feel uneasy 😬
I’ve been making my own chatter bait for at least five years there’s nothing like making your own chatter baits and catching fish I guess I make all my soft plastics and jigs
Have you had any eye tie failures? Wondering how durable that flasher wire form is , serving as a line connector. I've been considering the poison tail jig . Have you tried those?
There is a better connection, the Figure 8 wire form from LPO. Check out my fire craw chatterbait video. I use the Poison Swing Head mold and it works awesome. I’m sure the regular poison tail jig would work equally wrll
Nice. 2 things. The open eye screw need to be tested, how much pulling can hold before opens and let the blade goes. 8 lb, 10 lb, maybe less. Second, the keeper is useless, I do cut all of them and use crazy glue, the soft plastic will stay forever in place.
@thatguyskimpy has done some testing and I believe it was about 25lbs. I have recently started using a figure 8 wire form from lure parts along which is a heavier gauge wire and closer to a true chatterbait
If you don’t have the equipment it’s definitely an investment! I actually did a video breaking this down on my other channel: th-cam.com/video/YBaQoVveCN0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NBPrPLECrsRJy5gZ

Dude you are an excellent teacher. I do not say that lightly or often. Good job.
I really appreciate that
One trick I found for bait keeper wire is to use a small piece of heat shrink to hold it to the hook then you don't fumble around with it.
Ok….. you sold your channel on me. I’ve subscribed. Great job young man!
Thank you very much!
I really want to start making my own soft plastics and jigs . I spend way too much money losing lures to trees and stumps. This was really good

do you have the video where you modified your mold to fit the wire bait keeper?

I would like to know how Z Man got the vertical open eye jigs removed from the market place after they came out with the chatter bait.
How i fix the blade if i dont make my Jigheads self?I hsd a Fluidbed etc. With splittrings?
Merci from Switzerland
I don't have the ability to pour my own lead so I just use a D&M custom baits Piranha Swim Jig with a Queens Tackle Switch Blade. Totals about $8 per bait and you get a Gama hook, great colors, and a direct connection to the head. Really solid baits
Yeah those queen tackle switch blades are really cool too!
@@BaitMakingChannel I like being able to customize the blade color too. Tons of bluegill in my area so a gold blade gets bit more than anything else
I use the D&M swim jig as well but bend the eye out carefully to add my custom blades
How do you connect the blade to an existing closed eye jig?
The only way would be to use a split ring. If it’s a vertical eye jig, you need two split rings
Hey Benjamin I would like to know where you get your Lead, and what grade or make.

How do you get by the Zman patent making the jigs with the blade connected directly to the eyelet without a split ring??
You can produce them, just not sell them
Why not find a 5-6Ot 60 degree hook and have the hook connected to the blade before you pour lead?
I'm having trouble with the lead covering the shank of the hook. Not sure if its not hot enough? its almost like it gets stopped at the eyelet. Any advice would be appreciated. I am using the same components , pot and mold etc.
Try going a setting higher around 8/8.5. With the extra components I’ve had to heat my lead slightly hotter so it fills the mold complete
another trick is to use a brush and put just a bit more (powder paint) on the head in front of the eye, that way when it bakes it encapsulates the end of the eye really good.
whats size vibrating blades did you order?? I see there are a few options.
What size blade is that you use small med or large.
It’s the Large size from Ali Express
Can you leave the plug out, and add a weedguard after poured? Ty
Yes! Absolutely - You‘ll actually use a full plug and it’ll leave an indentation where the weedguard goes
What was the paint you used and where can I get it.
I'm gonna experiment with "Pull Weight", because i did buy the items in the vid, except the hooks, i got the curved eye loop, which i'll experiment with. Man, your telling my secrets!!!! lol
Excellent video really enjoyed it thanks keep up the good work 👌
Just a FYI, the figure 8 connectors from Barlows or Jann's netcraft work better than the underspin wire forms.
what size do you use?
Nice video, what do you recommend on the oven temp and for how long do they need to be in there?
Ben, what's the nomenclature for the blades on Alibaba? I have been trying to find those myself. I have been doing the same as your video for the past 2 years.
Does the eye ever open up on larger fish? Thank you.
I’ve not had any issues yet. You can also buy a figure 8 wire form from lure parts online that is heavier diameter that I’ve been playing with as well
Keep em coming
How did you modify your mold for the bait keeper....and will an Arkie jig work as well as the Sparkie?
An Arkie jig will work just as well. To modify my mold, I place the hook and baitkeeper in the mold, and hit it a few times with a deadblow hammer
Could you use an EWG hook in this mold? Is there a better mold to do that?
They make EWG hooks that might work in this mold but I’m not sure. A lot of people really like the poisontail jig mold for making chatterbaits
Share the link for the Blades please !
I found them on AliExpress - Countbass I believe. You want the Large size
What are your thought on using the JKS-3-AY mold for bladed jigs?

Beautiful 🤤🤤
Where is the swivel or do you use the fastach clip? The regular swivels are challenging to put on. Wish you didn't leave that final step out...
