Utterly fascinated by the concept of "I've already read this, am I going to read it again, if not, I should give it away." Hahahah. I'm much more likely to keep books I've already read than ones that I haven't and lose interest in ever picking up. I only tend to get rid of books that I've read if I aggressively disliked them.
I use my library lots and lots and it really helps me control my book collection! It sometimes means you have to wait a wee bit for new and popular stuff, but you can often pre-order popular books. Honestly it’s so great
7:15 Reading the Diary of Anne Frank is the first time I came across a detailed description of the vulva (I was maybe twelve or thirteen at the time?) ! After she and Peter become close and Peter confesses his complete sexual ignorance, Anne describes her genitals for his and the reader's benefit. When the Diary was first published, this passage and several others concerning Anne's sexuality were cut for tone, but were included in later publications at the insistence of her father.
I feel like I read an edited version of the book which bums me out. Although I do remember her talking about both periods and vaginal discharge so not everything was removed!
Wasn't it the other way around though? Her father fulfilled her dream of being a published writer but it was actually him who censored some parts that weren't printed in copies until somewhat recently
I remember the particular edition Hannah's got from high school social studies. It's highly abridged, so would recommend the Definitive Edition from Puffin Books if you can choose.
When I move next year, the plan is to move into a space with room for an actual office with space for a bookshelf. Until then my sex and kink reference books are in storage and everything else is a library book because I can return it when I’m done. I’m soooo looking forward to filling up, emptying, then filling up a bookshelf for years and years to come. Also all the books I want to own (after checking it out from the library, reading, then falling in love with it) go on an Amazon wish list so I can buy them later. Because needing to get rid of books and reorganize a bookshelf is a problem I can’t wait to have, lol.
the dinasour screech that came out of me with this notification was not normal... BUT BOOKS!!! Also, this is a new one for me. I don't declutter bookshelves. I just get a new bookshelf.
Hannah would have loved to have seen what books you have on your book shelf as a reference guide for future purchase. In particular the sex Ed section. Any chance now you reorganised you could take a photo of each section / square and post it somewhere (E.g. Discord / Instagram)
The Picture of Dorian Grey! My heart! I loved this book so much, when I was fourteen and I still love it now in my twenties. Even went to a musical/theater version of it. It's just a perfect display of how perfect and honourable one can be but still so easily may be corrupted. Also it's written really smoothely and you'll go through it very quick. I just love it, for me it is one of the few books wich is supposed to be a literary classic, but somehow is easy to read, extremely interesting and never boring. Petition for Dorian Grey to stay!
i second this! I literally just handed in an essay about it today and I enjoyed it so much it's such a genius book but so easy to read. Give it a chance, Hannah!
Yes to the book haul video. What about the unedited version of books? For example, The Picture of Dorian Grey was edited twice before publishing as the novel most people have read. In the 2010s (I believe 2011, but I’m not certain), the unedited version with all of the stuff removed for acceptability was published and it’s supposed to be much more queer.
My wife and I used to be such book hoarders but last year we started our minimalist/declutter journey and we got rid of 90% of our physical books. We now both have kindles with a couple of hundred books preloaded on them and only keep non-fiction, sentimental and first editions/limited edition books on our bookshelves. Going digital for our fiction has been a game changer as we now both read so much more (we both have multiple books on the go at once) and take our e-readers everywhere which is so much more convenient than lugging books around. We still love reading physical books but now it’s become so much more special because we don’t do it day in, day out. I know e-readers aren’t for everyone and we resisted going digital for so long but now we both wish we had done it a lot sooner.
ahhh to stop myself hoarding books and never reading them ive stopped buying books ive never read as a rule. ill borrow a copy from the library, and if i read it and love it enough, ill buy a copy to read. i love rereading anyway so it works well :') ps. watching u declutter and be otherwise productive is motivating thanks hannah
I tend not to re-read books (except for those with sentimental value) so for the past few years I've given books away to fam and friends as soon as I've read them which has helped SO much with stopping clutter from building up. It also feels nice to give a book to someone when you know they're going to enjoy it
Currently reading invisible women, and that should go into your ‘read next’ section! I’m about halfway through but it’s really opened my eyes to how biased things have been designed in the past and the huge impact excluding half the population from design considerations can have. I would really recommend.
Please read a picture of Dorian grey!!!! It's so good, the dialogue is so sharp and whitty and the characters are so interesting! It's not as difficult to read as you'd think! The ending messed me up as I just finished it a day ago!
If you end up reading The Lord of the Rings, make sure you try to read past the first 100 pages. The first bit can sometimes seem like a bit of a drag if you're not super used to the style yet. It picks up after that. And it's so worthwile to read, I really recommend it!
Currently reading "A Well-Behaved Woman" by Therese Anne Fowler. There is a really wonderful balance of history and feminine empowerment in this novel. I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading it but I just can't put it down.
Hannah, so you want to have storage unit somewhere... I strongly advice you to create an Excel (or similar) list where you list everything that is in your storage unit! I would order that list by categories like "important", "keep, but not that important", "i don't care for this". Having a list helps with finding stuff and just knowing what you have! I love your organization videos! Took me 11 months (with breaks) this year to sort though all my stuff (with archiving documents, and sorting though all digital belonings). And I love it now! Greetings from Germany!
I used to do that with classics too and buy them because I thought I had to read them and I have since realized I hate classics and don’t want to read any of them 😂
Classics can suprise you, seriously! Some of them are awful, but some (esp 20th century ones) are quick paced and easy to read, not boring at all - as high school made us believe!
@@zofiabochenska1240 i just don't tend to like "literary" type books. give me sci-fi or fantasy or crime or basically any series that has at least 15 books in it and i can read without noticing there is an author. To me a good book is all about not noticing an authors "style" or opinion etc.
Same! I've had to read American classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, and I tried to read War and Peace (and spoiler, I hated it, and have no desire to read any more Tolstoy books like Anna Karenina). I'm just not into "literary" books, if that's even what you call them. I'm just such a fantasy person (mostly YA) and sci-fi. The closest thing to a classic you're ever gonna see me willingly read is probably Lord of the Rings.
Well done! I am not reading anything atm because I am struggling with precisely what you described, finishing one and deciding for days what to read next. I shall try your idea! I decluttered over 1000 a few years ago, went from books I had no intention of reading, ever or again, to a well loved collection that makes me so happy. If I read a book now and don't like it, it goes immediately to another home. I will always have lots of books, because I love them, no need to keep ones I do not love. But still painful to see them go!
I'm reading 'Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas' by Adam Kay because 'This is Going to Hurt' was amazing and I couldn't wait til Christmas time to get started on his newest
Currently indulging in a nostalgia fest and re-reading Harry Potter, I’m in Order of the Phoenix at the moment. This is a tactical move because it’s stopping me buying the books I’ve mentioned to my boyfriend that I’d like for Christmas. We have a similar size bookshelf and it’s full, so we now have a rule that I need to remove a book before I’m allowed to buy a new one, so I’ve sneakily just taken to buying Kindle books instead 😂 Love the video! Book content is the best!
I support the de-cluttering but you should definitely read Fahrenheit 451 and The Picture of Dorian Gray - just get them from the library some day because they’re both so good!
Hannah: "I've had these books for so long. Am I ever going to read Fahrenheit 451? What is it even about?" *throws it into the donate pile* Me: "Noooooooo! Don't, it's so good!!!"
the thing about all those classics though is that if she ever decides she wants to read it itll be at every library ever, and itll be in print forever. thats my thinking when i get rid of classics i havent read
I worked in a library and if we got a donated book with a page ripped out it would get trashed. So donating after ripping out the page is actually hurting the place you're donating to, because they have to pay to toss it now.
I clean, rearrange and sometimes, purge, my bookshelf like once every six months, and I like to listen to videos like this while I do it, saved for those times!!! (I really enjoy doing it). Also, I did a big declutter like 5 years ago before moving houses, and now I only own books I have read and loved or books I plan to read.
I've moved a bunch and I'm going to once more in the near future, and lugging books place to place is obnoxious. My husband and I have really stripped them down. Public domain classics? The library has them all! I keep sentimental, reference, and things I will actually read again now.
That is precisely the reason to declutter a bookshelf. Also currently reading: Inheritence by Christopher Paolini, the Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, The Tudors by G. J. Meyer, and Thank you For Arguing by Jay Heinrichs.
You did a beautiful job de-cluttering your bookcases! While I love buying used books, do I need them all? So now I decided to keep the books that I love and donate all the rest, this is a constant process throughout the year. Also, I have decided that my two bookcases are enough and that I should not allow books to clutter surfaces. I have also switched to using the library as much as possible.
There is an uncensored version of Dorian Gray that's out right now, if you want to read it, read that one or the Penguin Classics edition with the footnotes of what was cencored/removed from the original text. It was quite interesting to compare and see what was missing. The prose was a delight to go through, I don't know much about your taste but if you love beautiful sentences, you might give it a try on one of those days that you're feeling dramatic and flamboyant.
Just read Fahrenheit 451. Please. Also I'm reading The City of Dreaming Books which is a fairytale-like fantasy about literature. Big yes for reading nerds.
As a booktuber, I love me some bookcase organisation! Although you pulling the signed page out of a book did make me wince! Fab video as always though, thanks for sharing!
Wow, this was fascinating; I love books but have severe dustmite allergies so while I have 20 or so physical books for my son, I digitized my whole collection to avoid the dust buildup/cleaning, but even when I had many physical books I never had more than one at a time I hadn’t read.
I can HIGHLY recommend Hagseed, it's incredible and you'll be able to read it reasonably quickly as it's quite small, but SO worth the read! The writing is stunning, the story is mad and fascinating, and links to Shakespeare in so many cool ways. 5 stars! 💕
Oh this one hits me! I'm a illustratior and especially interested in children illustration, so I buy so many children books as reference or inspiration So MUCH! I organize them as a beautiful gradient now ^^ currently reading a book on how to write good video games
ahaha - ripping the page out was brilliant. I'm a massive reader from a family of massive readers and my parents went nuts when i was a kid, because i'd read all their novels and tear the corners of pages out to bite on while concentrating. It's probably a good thing i only really read on a kindle these days! the only paper books i've kept are art books and some picture books from childhood.
This is exactly my sort of content! Loving the new channel! Feeling inspired to go out and buy some books myself now, even though I have no intention of decluttering my shelf in the near future! Another book arriving right as you finish was hilarious lol
LOVED! This video because I am currently moving and going through organizing my books as well, just wish I could have a book case as big and beautiful as yours!
Hannah is a chaotic book owner, I'd say I'm a lawful book owner (yeah using the axis of evil) I love doing my bookshelf. I also read a book as soon as I can and I don't put books I haven't read on my shelf until it has been read and if it is worthy being on the shelf. I also keep books on the chance of I will most likely read it again. I get rid when I know I won't or if I hated (but sometimes I keep for bragging rights, like Catch 22)
Hannah pls read Invisible Women when you get the chance. It's SO SO GOOD!! It has completely changed the way I look at the world around me. I know it looks quite daunting because of the size but trust me once you start it'll be very hard to put down. It's very readable so you'll be able to finish it off within a day or two easily. I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this! I’m currently reading the 12th book in The Wheel of Time series, and once I finish the series I’m going to do a similar decluttering of all my books. I think I’m going to try to not buy many more books for a while and instead start going to the public library - that way I’ll be supporting an important resource in my town and not further hoarding books (for now...)!
Was finding this so soothing (organisation nerd over here), and then you started ripping pages out!!!! As an ex-bookseller I am begging you, keep the whole book
I just finished reading Libriomancer by Jim Hines because I love me some fantasy and enthusiasm about the power of books! Now I’m reading Lex’s physical book but also reading Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen on my kindle, along with a dozen or so other books I’ve hoarded there from the library.
I am almost two years late to this party. I started cracking up, I said the same thing about my copy of LotR books while unpacking my books the other day! I have the editions too, they're drool worthy.
Watching you make that effort to move the shelf to make room for your tall sex ed books and then ultimately move all the books down to the next shelf... that made me giggle. A lot.
Ray Bradbrury is one of my favourite writers. If you're really not going to read Fahrenheit 451, then obviously you should burn it! My current read is Spring by Ali Smith and it's fantastic.
This was satisfying to watch. Being at uni currently and having to read a lot of things you dont really get a choice in is soul draining. I finally was able to sit down the other day after not really fully finishing a book in months and read Jessica Valenti's "Sex Object" memoir. Tis a good read, and pretty short, will maybe take you an evening to get through.
What is Fahrenheit 451 about? Mostly it's about the value of reading books. Kind of ironic that you tossed it without reading it. Also, Ray Bradbury just writes beautiful prose. If there's one book you jettisoned which you should read, that's probably it.
Ah! I just did a massive book declutter myself and filmed it for my channel, now i'm looking at your video and going 'ooooh, i did not get any nice angles or montage shots', it's literally me slumping exhausted on a pile of books, woops.
I want to reread Frankenstein because I hated it when I did it for GCSE last year but then when we discussed it after reading it, I started to like it so I want to read it again now I have a slightly better idea of what is going on.
Fahrenheit 451 is, like 1984 or Animal Farm, a warning about what can happen if you let government control go too far. It focuses on what can happen if you eliminate books completely in favor of televised entertainment. It's somewhat dated, due to being written before the advent of home video recorders or video games, but it gets its point across. It's a quick read, especially compared with a Game of Thrones volume, and I do recommend you just sit down and have at it.
Reading Dracula at the moment! I really love gothic fiction and I normally find them very slow to get through but with this one I've been flying through! Possibly a new favourite fiction book!
Hannah! You simply _must_ read the _Half Bad_ trilogy by Sally Green if you haven't already! They are as good as _Harry Potter_ in my opinion, although rather more intense. Young adult fantasy (witches), and there's some lovely representation in them as well! I've read them three times and haven't gotten bored yet. Hope you're doing well!
I read Fahrenheit 451 in school and it's actually not terrible. Was forced to read a lot of books in school and although the majority of them were bad I found my favorite book through that. In Cold Blood.
That doorbell was too well-timed to be true. 😂 I'm almost done with The God of Small Things, started end of August. I've been meaning to read it for a good nine years and I sure don't regret not throwing it away!!
I don't even understand the why of this, I nearly never get rid of a book. There are books in every room of my house. I grew up in a house full of books and I am always slightly suspicious of people who don't just have books laying around.
Nooo Hannah you don't get rid of them - there's worse things in the world to collect than books! You could have a library service for your friends :P I actually love rereading my favourite books, even if I do know what's going to happen. It feels nice and cosy and friendly haha (that includes the hunger games series). I also have 25 physical books I haven't read, countless others on the kindle, and an amazon wishlist containing 270 books I'd like to read... oh dear.
I'm currently reading The Time in Between by Maria Duenas. I wached the TV show years ago and looooved it so I wanted to give it a read. After this, I'll probably move on to some other historical book - my favorite genre.
My heart just broke when you ripped off that signed page 💔
Knew that would be unpopular...
@@morehannah 😂😂
Same, I'm dead.
I'm guessing it's dedicated rather than just a general signed copy? Always a wonderful thing as a bookish person to stumble upon a signed copy.
Agreed - that was definitely a book crime.
Tossing aside Fahrenheit 451 and then ripping a page out of book? Ouch, the irony.

“I have a problem where I acquire books faster than I read them...” *stares at the 800+ unread books on my 7 bookcases*
I feel ya! 😂😂
OK, I feel a little better, since I probably have only ("only," LOL) 350 or so unread books.
I read 70 books a year (yes, bought ones) and currently have 7 unread books so I feel like a hero princess superwoman right now.

That's a great way to sort you books by theme and then read and unread. My bookshelf is tiny, I hardly have any physical books as I mostly read ebooks
Very satisfying, you’ve inspired me to organise my bookshelf, I hate when there are horizontal books on top! 📕📗📘📙
I have also switched to using the library as much as possible.
fahrenheit 451 is one of the only school books i loved!!
A very short introduction to American Politics is really good! We use it all the time when studying political science in Uni!
Just read Fahrenheit 451. Please. Also I'm reading The City of Dreaming Books which is a fairytale-like fantasy about literature. Big yes for reading nerds.
Fahrenheit 451 is a love letter to books. Totally worth every moment!
5 stars! 💕
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is such a moving book, if you haven’t got rid of it already, please contemplate reading it! Clean is a fantastic read 😊
I'm reading The Importance of Being Aisling at the moment. It's an Irish comedy and it's a real easy read
I love her! Now I'll have to get another book... (book shelves already crying from the strain in the background)
Oh this one hits me! I'm a illustratior and especially interested in children illustration, so I buy so many children books as reference or inspiration So MUCH! I organize them as a beautiful gradient now ^^ currently reading a book on how to write good video games
Oh nice!
The one hundred nights of hero is one of my top 5 books of the year! Highly recommend
honestly u ripping out the page of a book u didnt want bc u wanted to save the autograph? absolute legend. we had to stan
ahaha - ripping the page out was brilliant.
Not hating, just fascinating - I love how content creators can basically tidy up their homes (wardrobes, bookshelves, etc) and consider it work :D :D
Currently reading: The Two Pound Tram, Dance to the Piper, and Street Hauntings
The sun bookends are amazing!
I am almost two years late to this party. I started cracking up, I said the same thing about my copy of LotR books while unpacking my books the other day! I have the editions too, they're drool worthy.
Loved this! I’m now inspired to reorganize my bookshelves. :)
“It’s so pretty so we’re keeping it just in case” this is so relatable tbh
Now we need to know which ones you kept!!
Just finishing off Orlando by Virginia Woolf my queen (when you threw a room of ones own I felt that thud in my heart)
Currently reading 'The man who mistook his wife for a hat". Just started, but already seems fascinating!
I started it today😍
What is Fahrenheit 451 about? Mostly it's about the value of reading books. Kind of ironic that you tossed it without reading it. Also, Ray Bradbury just writes beautiful prose. If there's one book you jettisoned which you should read, that's probably it.
Ah! I just did a massive book declutter myself and filmed it for my channel, now i'm looking at your video and going 'ooooh, i did not get any nice angles or montage shots', it's literally me slumping exhausted on a pile of books, woops.
It to give you ideas of anything, but one book you would LOVE is The Lucky Galah by Tracey Sorensen - or at least the audio book 😍😍
That said, go through it once, and *then* donate it.
Thanks Hannah, now I'm off to declutter my shelves!!
Read The Grace Year and The Giver of Stars. They're so beautiful.
To this day, I sell a copy of Let's Talk About Where Babies Come From at least every few months. A true classic.
I read Fahrenheit 451 in school and it's actually not terrible. Was forced to read a lot of books in school and although the majority of them were bad I found my favorite book through that. In Cold Blood.
That doorbell was too well-timed to be true. 😂
I'm almost done with The God of Small Things, started end of August. I've been meaning to read it for a good nine years and I sure don't regret not throwing it away!!
I don't even understand the why of this, I nearly never get rid of a book. There are books in every room of my house. I grew up in a house full of books and I am always slightly suspicious of people who don't just have books laying around.
the state of my bookshelves were making me feel uneasy and guilty and it wasn't helping me actually enjoy reading
@@morehannah I can understand that I have that with craft supplies.
Nooo Hannah you don't get rid of them - there's worse things in the world to collect than books! You could have a library service for your friends :P
I actually love rereading my favourite books, even if I do know what's going to happen.
