.yes food banks would love them . They are sturdy and also would save the recipients money as they can use them for their own shopping when they have the funds to shop. Hannah just politely refuse in future if you can. They are very resource intensive to make . If you get one just use it til it falls apart...
How to decultter a canvas bag: use it for putting gifts in rather than gift wrap. The recipient can do the same. Round and round it goes and the bag us reused and less wrapping paper disposed much of which can't be recycled.
@@MsDarkAcademy We've been doing it for years in my family. Occasionally it's gift a parachute will bag which folds up super small and light and is super strong (my personal preference to canvas bags any day) or we have a few drawstring bags that were gifts themselves from someone and were from the body shop and we have had since 1994.
Maybe you could offer the book ones to a local library for them to have for people who come without a bag...? (See? This is how we all "acquire" the bags. This is the way.)
My local charity shop here in Canada takes old tote bags and plastic bags to use at the checkout. This is actually how I got my favourite fabric tote bag.
They're too good to get rid of as they have so much life left in them so I would recommend giving them to friends and family or donating them to a charity shop. Definitely don't bin them!
From the Norwegian TV-show "Folkeopplysningen" (roughly translated to Public information) about plastic bags: All bags got compared to the normal plastic bags we get at the store, and they assumed they get reused as trach bags in the home, meaning they don't end up in nature. - Paper bags: needs to be used 43 times to make up for their environmental footprint - Cotton bags: needs to be used 7100 times to make up for their environmental footprint. This sounds really high, but you have to think about all the recourses that goes into the productions, like water, chemicals, the cotton and the land it was grown on. All in all it ads up. (Surprisingly organic cotton was worse because they used less efficient ways of production, leading to more water, area used etc.) - polyester and other bags made from plastic like the IKEA bag: needs to be used about 10 times to make up for their environmental footprint compared to the plastic bags from the shops. But remember, it's more important what you actually put in the bag.
You can use the canvas bags that you want to get rid of to "wrap" your Christman gifts :) I have done it in the past and it turned out better than I thought, I left the cute ones as they were because maybe the receiver would like to use them again and just added some ribbons on the handles to close them like a little sack, while I cut the ugly ones and used them as wrapping paper for smaller gifts
I used my favourite ones with sentimental values etc and sewed them together to make one big shopping/laundry bag and I finally get to use them. Also ironing and framing really cool ones in place of posters/prints is fun and easy for decorating. Especially for sentimental ones.
I did the same in the last lockdown. I brought some of them to the next unverpackt/zero waste Shop, they always collect bags for people who forgot them. I brought the others to a charity shop.
I think the thing with canvas bags is that like everything else made of cotton, they take a lot of resources to make and have a pretty high carbon footprint. But what I take away from that is that everything we consume has a high carbon footprint once you've factored in producing the raw materials, processing, transport, etc. If canvas bags are used enough times then they are less bad than a plastic bag in terms of carbon footprint, but the best thing to do is to avoid consumption in the first place - using what you already have is always the most environmentally friendly option. But it's SO difficult to avoid excessive consumption.
You’ve probably given away the bags by now but in case you haven’t or if anyone else has bags to dispose of, a great idea is filling them with period products and donating them to women’s shelters this holiday season.
I love stuffing cushions/pillows with otherwise useless canvas bags, they are perfect for that because some are soft and some are of a sturdier fabric which can give the cushion/pillow a good form.
I cut up my old canvas bags and sewed them together into a quilt and donated the left over fabric to someone who wanted it. They get a second life as a quilt but I also get to keep all the memories as many of them came from events. I do this with t-shirts too!
use them for gift bags, fill them with small things (great for christmas or health packs for anything) and they will be moved to a new home. I use my bags to store books and dvds that I want to bring with me when I was meant to travel and live on uni campus. You can donate them but you need to look into where they can be donated. All of the ones I have were from uni open days but two I might emroider when I have time.
In some shops in Poland they do bumerang bags, you can live yours there and if someone needs one for their shopping they take it and the next time they bring it back.
I know you're not a super crafty person, but I'm sure you have followers who are, like me! I have acquired a ton of canvas totes, like we all have, in one way or another. And while I use some for groceries, keep a couple in my backpack for spontaneous shopping, and love to use them as occasional alternative gift wrap, I still have a ton. So- I've started using them as project bags. I always have a ton of craft projects going at once, so I've started tossing everything needed for a specific project into a canvas tote when I'm putting it away for the time being, then the next time I want to work on it its all already together! Plus, this way it is also easier to stow the projects away in a closet, but also know exactly what I have going at any given time, and be able to limit llmyself to the number of bags that I have to store them in. It also makes the projects much more portable as well. Just a thought! Not necessarily conducive to decluttering said bags, but hopefully it's helpful to someone!
I have around 10 fabric bags and use them for storing things/grocery shopping. Also whenever I donate clothes I bring them in an old fabric bag and they can keep the bag (either selling them or using them for storage as well). I only bought one of these bags and it is the sturdiest one which I use almost ever single day
I've seen a local charity shop take these and upcycle them such as embroidering, dying, decorating with scrap fabrics which I thiught was an interesting idea also ive seen people take several old bags, cut them into pieces and resew into like crazy patterns so that you start with 4 plain bags and end up with 4 bags eith a collage of different colours and patterns on them to use as gift bags.
1) you could transform canvas bag into a cushion cover. 2) charity shops, libraries, food banks could use them. 3) alternatives to gift wrapping. 4) if any are damaged you can recycle clothes and bags etc at any H&M store. 5) you could donate them to people near you at the till in shops who forgot/ don't have any.
Not sure where to dispose of them but it looks like others do though i really want the OHNE one! 'You're fantastic. period" seems like a phrase id benefit from keeping close !
I'd use them to give gifts in, make cushions or perhaps a patchwork blanket-this doesn't really solve the declutter issue but it would mean a fun upcycling project and more use
When i was in secondary school i didn't know what i was supposed to take out of my bag, so I didn't take anything out. To the point where people would ask if they could try and pick it up because of how heavy it looked
Idea for the ones that old a sentimental value so that you can keep them but they don't just stay in a box never to be used : make a patchwork blanket with them ! It must not me that difficult to make ( and you could actually just thermal patch stick them to an already made blanket ) and make a really cool decoration ! :D
I love seeing this, especially since I'm working on decluttering my stuff! I mentioned to my mom that you found a back massager, and she said "You know what? I think I have one of those somewhere, too," which I think is hilarious and perfect timing, since she's been having back problems. So thank you! :-)
I have a bag full of canvas bags in my closet 😅 I plan on using them to give Christmas presents and then birthday presents until just the ones I love are left
You can probably buy clasps separately and sew them in yourself (or find someone else to do it for you lol) if the magnetic clasps are so important to you in terms of tote bag quality 😆

oh my gosh, I have just bought the celebration of vulva diversity book from the vulva gallery :) i dont know what you will be doing with the bags but I would love the vulva bag from Hilde if you decide to give them away?
Last year I actually wrote a research paper on the greenwashing of canvas / reusable bags! Fun (not so fun) fact, most bags never fulfill their carbon footprint because to equal out the resources that were put into making it, a bag must be used over 440 times! Also, people feel shame about shopping with branded bags in other stores so they actively avoid bringing them along!
Canvas bags take something like 1000 uses to offset their carbon footprint. Sounds like a lot but I feel like all made to last products take a lot of use to do so (unless they're made from recycled materials)
From what I know, the most eco friendly thing is to actually carry around a plastic bag, one of the sturdier ones. It is smaller, so you can have it permanently in your handbag, and producing and shipping it is much more efficient in terms of water and fossil fuels. Or just have two / three of them to rotate, that's fine. But giving them for free to people on the events, who most likely don't need one - no, not eco friendly at all.
I'd guess the best way to get rid of the bags would be to give them to people who don't have them. But I feel like canvas bags are gifted at every event now and everyone has a collection!
would it be possible for you to do a giveaway for some of the bags you don’t want anymore? i don’t know about anyone else but i would LOVE a vulva bag in my collection 😂
Some low waste stores accept canvas bagas as donation, so when you go to the store and dont have your own, you can get one for free. At least one that is near my house in Brazil
Donate the other canvas bags to your local foodbank!! lots of them sometimes stuggle with sturdy bags to use for food parcels
Came here to say the same thing! Been delivering a few food bank parcels lately and the 10p Tesco ones don't cut the mustard sometimes!
.yes food banks would love them . They are sturdy and also would save the recipients money as they can use them for their own shopping when they have the funds to shop. yeah they're definitely not going in the bin - slowly but surely finding new homes for them.

Good idea!
My mil runs a small bookstore and is constantly getting canvas bags. She said publishing is a tote heavy industry
I did the same in the last lockdown. I brought some of them to the next unverpackt/zero waste Shop, they always collect bags for people who forgot them. I brought the others to a charity shop.

Pillow cases, patchwork blankets could work as well.

can i have the plain one? they're so fun to embroider on. Actually no, you should embroider on it, its so much fun
I can't wait for vlognukah!!
List them on depop! I would love to buy the vidcon 2020 one
Oooh I might give that a go during my break over Christmas
@@morehannah I'm down to buy the Book of Dust one !! :) (for me or for a frien, who knows :p )

When you first said Clue I thought of the board game Cluedo and was so confused about why there were uteruses on the bag 😂
Maybe you could ask Lucid Seams if she would like any for projects they want to work on?
great idea
My local food pantry takes canvas bags to have customers use as reusable grocery bags.
Send all your gifts in the canvas bags you don’t want! Those are always my “gift bags”. 😂
I have a bag full of canvas bags in my closet 😅 I plan on using them to give Christmas presents and then birthday presents until just the ones I love are left
You could do a insta story sale of all your canvas bags! I love the vulva themed ones!!!
I've never found a household item to breed as much as reusable bags.
You could use them to "warp" Christmas presents :)

That jumper looks so comfy and love the colour but was it gifted by the cleaning product company?
Could turn them into decorative cushions too if you fancy a bit of easy sewing.
I have Harry Potter bags that I acquired and upcycled old cushions that I no longer liked and used the bag as a cover. Or if washing them would be better add a zip.

Wow! Would you mind explaining how you make embroidery hoops from the bags? Would love to know :)
So all I do is cut out the plain bit of the tote bag (normally the side you don’t see) and put the hoops over it. I then do whatever pattern I want on the fabric by drawing lightly with a pencil or pen ( depending on how delicate the design will be). You can just then leave the fabric in the embroidery hoop and tidy up the edges or take it out and frame it somehow.
I do this instead of buying lots of fabric because A) money is very tight for us atm and B) I have lots of coffee festival/ book bags gifted to me over the years that do t get used. It’s certainly a cost effective way to practice. :) 🧡
* for the bags specifically you for the hoop on one side the same as you would cutting it out. You just have to be really careful not to sew the two sides together ( done that plenty of times).
I would start by doing a simple slogan or image for your first attempt.
You can also reuse the funny bags to "wrap" presents in 😄
This is so satysfying to watch :))

I have fixed this by having at least one canvas bag in all my bags and in the pockets of my big coats. Haven't gotten a plastic bag for years now. 😊
That brown one that wasn’t canvas is great for this type of thing, they can be rolled up really small to live in your purse for just such an occasion!
You could pack christmas presents in them! 😀
Or donate them. Donation sites always can use bags for sure.
If you love the designs you could upcycle them like you did with the t shirt. I'm definitely going to turn some of mine into art.
I did not think it would be this many! :-D
I love the vulva gallery bag, do you know if it’s available to buy?
Canvas bags are kind of a mystery. New ones just appear but after some time they also disappear. So I have always the same amount of them.
lol just noticed we have the same desk stands
You could give them to family and friends as a little extra Christmas present, that way you know they've gone to a good home.
As gift wrappers !!
A decorative pillows collection could be done of those you don´t wanna keep? :-)
"all great cities" as if london, paris, etc would be offended you werent keeping a tote bag with them on it 😂

But giving them for free to people on the events, who most likely don't need one - no, not eco friendly at all.
I'd guess the best way to get rid of the bags would be to give them to people who don't have them. But I feel like canvas bags are gifted at every event now and everyone has a collection!
This is a great Ted Talk video exploring the impact and lifecycle of plastic vs paper vs canvas bags: th-cam.com/video/3_fjEc4aQVk/w-d-xo.html
would it be possible for you to do a giveaway for some of the bags you don’t want anymore? i don’t know about anyone else but i would LOVE a vulva bag in my collection 😂
Your baby hair are centre stage!! So funny
Some low waste stores accept canvas bagas as donation, so when you go to the store and dont have your own, you can get one for free. At least one that is near my house in Brazil
Maybe donating them/giving them/ selling them on Depop ? (I would be happy to buy some of them ;) )
Could work with that lady who made your first aid kit dress and put cool designs onto other clothes?
I use them to take things to donate to thrift shops, and just put the whole thing in the container outside
You can send those bags to your loyal subscribers who watch both of your channels) i would have taken the uteri one!
Put them up online for the price of postage?
*waves lighter* Take your canvas baags, take your canvaas baags, take your canvas bags to the supermarket!
