This is such a good way to look at it.
I often give books away to the charity shops, but I don't really feel like I've wasted money, not only did I get to read them, but I also often find other books for cheap at the charity shops, so it kind of works out, and of course there is the charity aspect of it. Plus I like the idea that the books I didn't love might find other homes where they'll be loved.

I agree. I recently purged out about 130 or so books a couple months back, and that helped me tremendously, both mentally and space wise. I purged down and I was finally able to properly categorize and organize my shelves to how I always wanted them to look like, and as a result my room just...felt better to be in. It’s really therapeutic.

I feel the same way. I regularly get rid of books as I like looking at my bookshelves, and only seeing books I love, I feel like they can kind of get lost among the books I don't love. I also feel kind of sad about having books just sitting there collecting dust, knowing I'll never read them again, when they could go to someone else who might love them.

For anyone who really struggles unhauling: something that has changed my life is writing a list in my journal of the books I’m getting rid of. This really eliminates the fear element for me. I think it’s because it means that I won’t forget certain books, but I also don’t have to have them physically present. Books can be found so cheaply these days, or in libraries; just because I have a book I know I want to read at some point in the future doesn’t mean I have to hold onto it indefinitely.

I used to be a big book purger when I moved around a lot. Moving every year - or more - meant that it was practical and financially smart to cull. Now that I’m in a more stable place, I kind of regret some of the books I gave away. (At the same time, a lot I don’t remember, proving I probably don’t miss the vast majority! So I remain supportive of culling efforts!)
Ultimately what I find super useful is using the library for most of the books I read during the year. Then, at the end of the year, I look back and the ones I simply adore are the ones I purchase for my shelf. A little backward, but it means I’m so happy with what I own! And I save so much money!
Ps. Good luck with the move!

I've started doing this too!! I just truly truly love buying books BUT they're so expensive and sometimes they're not worth the price so I find using the library more practical, then buying the ones I want to underline things in (second hand usually dont want books here cause they have enough and theres no recycling for books so if I want to get rid of that one it doesnt matter) and/or the ones i want to reread multiple times.
Also it's something nice with only having books you love on your shelf? Almost less stressful, lots of memories etc.

Same for me ill grab the ebook or borrow and if i abaolutely like 4 or 5 star love it ill buy it. But one caveat is i wait til a series is done and buy them as a whole or sometimes the series likw first 3 books will be super solid and great but then the last 2 will implode and just be so disappointing that i cant enjoy the first 3 or whatever books again because i know how shitty it ends. For my perfect in every way aka mary poppins books ill get the like super fancy gorgeous limited edition type books and use them more like a pretty display collector type thing and have the regular book for rereading purposes. For example i love emma (not every version - nor because its my name but i really resonate with her lol) so i collect the editions of Emma that i love and treasure hunt for older ones and avoid the modern or movie related etc ones which i just bleh hate. And that for me falls into the pretty makes my heart full collection category and i simply read it on ebook if i want to reread.

I love watching people clean their shelves to main the things they love. I've done it and I really like it. I'm not overwhelmed with books I didn't like (bringing on things I remembered about the books that let me down) and not having a massive pile of unread books. Since I know either way I might momentarily forget I have them or I get so overwhelmed that I don't end up reading anything. With less books I read what's available to me and let myself really sit on if I want a book so by the time I go and buy the book, intentionally seeking out that one book, I'm ready to read it then.
And being okay with the money spent because it like food matters of something I took in, not the physical object. While I still have preferences like really nice floppy paperbacks for instance. I've noticed with the pretty collectors editions, I don't read as well because I don't want to damage or write in those. Yet in the other ones, I do not mind all sorts of annotating and reader damage and that will be the edition i turn to the most to read and reread.
I'm still watching your video. And please don't overthink the length of the videos. You have a thoughtful, calm yet provoking style that I do enjoy to listen to and it brings out these comments of mine, even if it may not completely match what you're talking about, some of the comments you make in the videos like some you made earlier on here, I resonate and agree with. There's always an emotional and mental change for me after I go through my bookshelves for whatever goal I planned. May your future shelves continue to bring you happiness and may the move and everything surrounding this new journey be safe and have a good ending. I know how crazy things can be.

I had 6 book cases crammed into my room filled to max capacity, books under my bed, stacked next to my bed and in boxes in the garage... I donated over 5,500 books to my local schools, libraries and second hand book stores. I have one book case now filled with just my favorites. It feel so much better to own the ones that matter and borrow the rest. And if I love one I borrowed, I buy the digital copy. Everyone's book collection is purely them. I used to have sooo many books until I started to move often and I discovered what a pain it was to haul them all when I never got around to reading most of them. I realized they were just clutter. As much as I love books, I don't need to keep them just to keep them. I've gone from a huge book shelf full to a small shelf bin of about 9 or 10. Even that I could narrow down a bit, but I'm fine for now.
Donate books to your local library, put them in little free libraries for others to enjoy, or take them to consignment or paperback trade. Lots of options for books so people can still get joy from them.

My reading room was destroyed by a natural disaster, along with most of my home. When we were able to move back in, and I had all the empty space to fill, I decided to only bring in things, including books, that I love. And I’ve also made a decision to read, or have already read, the books on my shelves. I redid a formal dining room into my home library that’s much bigger than my previous reading room, but there are so few books on the shelves because I’m not bringing just anything in.

Hello, this is my first time on this channel. I wanted to say Thank you for sharing your feelings. I think growing up as someone who liked to read books and also moved so many times I feel almost obligated to keep them all as something safe (did I mention I also teach and recently opened up a bookshop?) and this was so refreshing. I think I am definitely going to purge my personal collection so I can move on with those I have at work. I don't read as much the books I would love to (like classics) more of a self-development style now, but I love the fact I get to share the love and help my students to build their confidence when reading. Also - we must be related (definitely not), I love Orwell too, Frida, Nabokov, Kafka, classics- I feel the same way - don't want to get rid of them, but hard to put a limit on it. Anyway I hope the move went well. I am definitely going to have a little look around your channel. Thank you for your honesty, no wonder why you have 230 k subscribers. Katerina

Ohhhhh I'm getting SOOO much second hand anxiety over this! I moved about a billion times in my twenties, carting my massive book and vinyl record collection with me everywhere I went, at times storing it in storage facilities. There was one time I purged entirely TOO much of my book collection... rare books, first edition books, books I really loved but felt pressured to get rid of or was influenced by the minimalism movement (which I absolutely hate now and will never subscribe to again). There's books I can't even remember I had or read because this was wayyy before I ever knew about goodreads. When I finally bought a home with my husband 4 years ago I started repurchasing the books that I could remember, usually being picky about editions and paying more for the ones I wanted. It's a nightmare. I keep every book I get now, whether I hate it or not. Thankfully I'm very set on staying in this house for a long time. Whenever we upgrade I'll lug them all, I don't care. I am so not dealing with that headache/heartache again. But man, do I know what you're going through. It is ROUGH.

I feel you girl. I grew up as a military brat. We moved EVERY 3 years from air base to air base, so I had to purge my ENTIRE life (clothes, toys, books, furniture, etc) and it was heart rendering every time. Books were the hardest to do because throughout all my moves - losing friends, having to make new ones, dealing with a new school etc - books were my coping mechanism. They were always there for me to lose myself in when life got crappy. Unfortunately they are also the heaviest of items - so they had to be culled. Thank goodness my mom is a big reader too, so I was given a bit of a sympathetic shoulder & given a max of 10 boxes for books every move. Once I moved out & had my own place...I started to collect in earnest. Over half of my apartment is filled with bookcases of books. Lord help me if I have to move in the near future. Good luck! 💜

When you talked about how much booktube has swayed your excitement you have for new releases/books everyone hypes up, I felt that. I used to purchase soooo many books that I would then just put on my shelf and never feel like reading. I've wasted hundreds of euros on books that I will never read just because I've let booktube influence my decisions so much. About a year ago, I've stopped watching most of booktube and lo and behold, my book buying frenzy has come to a very abrupt halt. And all the books I do buy now, are ones that I'm actually excited about because I've discovered them based on my personal taste and not popularity on TH-cam. And almost all of them I've actually read, and the ones I haven't yet are simply put on hold because I don't have the time right now. That was a big wake up call and what you said just resonated so incredibly well with me.
