Thanks for the video. Wish that Kohler were so kind as give us instructional videos. I paid $8.49 for this little booger. I need to shop where you shop. Thanks for sharing.

@@beardedninja1991 Our water bill went down to $33. Didn't realize how much a leaking toilet can cost. Previous water bills were $200+. Thank you again.
After pulling out the white water tube on top, I didn't even need to unscrew the top. I found it easier just to release the metal chain, and put in the yellow replacement O-ring from top. Move it down to fit into the bottom. Re-attach the metal chain. Done! (This hack came about because I had a hard time removing the screw on top, and was afraid that I might break it!)
Thanks, fixed my phantom flushing problem. Just one minor critique: need more lighting, try a head lamp next time you’re making a video in a poorly lit area. This video was still very helpful. Thank you.
Very helpful video! The only thing I would add is, once you get the canister off and remove the old gasket, take a rag or paper towel and wipe the surfaces the gasket contacts on both the canister and base. This will remove any scum or slime that might have accumulated and insure a good seal with the new gasket. Thanks for posting this!
Excellent video. Mine was just like yours with the red just sitting there. I thought that’s where the new yellow went until I found it leaking. Then I saw your video and was like oh haha it goes in the groove. Now it’s working great. Thank you!
Thank you for watching and glad I could help, I agree it was very simple fix that could be very costly in water bills if not fixed. Please Like and Subscribe for more diy videos.
Thanks for this, I just put the seal flat in there because that's what the other one looked like - didn't know it locked into the plastic... I had even placed small polished rocks in the container to hold it down tighter, but your vid helped a bunch
Bearded Ninja Yes is did, and thank you! Although I forgot to turn the water off first, but I completed the task with water squirting all over me, like I was in submarine training.
Thank you for watching and your comment. I'm glad I could help, some DIY projects are very easy and some require professionals. Thank you for watching Please Like and Subscribe for more DIY videos.
Great instructions! Fixed my leak in less than a minute. It took me fifteen minutes to try taking off the shaft from the base. I watched your video problem solved.
Simply cleaning my canister seal worked, didn't even have to replace it... just reached down with one finger and brushed off some sediment, no more problems. Thank you!
This was really helpful. I do have a slight improvement in technique though. Twisting the shaft from the top puts a lot of torque on a pretty fragile plastic piece. I lifted the canister with my left hand and twisted the shaft down at the base. It's also easier to get it lined up this way when it's time to lock it in to place. Thanks for posting the vid.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU for taking the time to do this...you nailed it!! DIY people are not looking for a high quality filming, rather giving exactly what you did!!
Thank you! Simple instructions, yet detailed enough for me to easily follow. Thank you so much for helping me repair my toilet while my husband and dad were out of town. I did it myself!!! Well, with your help. Woohoo!
Thank you for giving your time to demonstrate this repair - saving myself and many others a call to the plumber for a 5 minute $7.00 fix! Plumbers are necessary, skilled tradesmen - just not for small, simple things like this. Peace & Blessings.
Glad I could help and agreed sometimes professional plumbers have to be called but for simple fixes as this one it can easily be done by any one willing to try a diy. Thanks for watching please like and subscribe
Good instructions Bearded Ninja. It was a very simple fix. The only thing I did different was unloosen the chain so I can place back the whole valve much easier.
Great video! Thanks for going into detail on how to remove the plunger assembly and the seal itself. Also thanks forte warning about those blue tablets - they ruined my toilet too.
Tasha Hampton. Your welcome thanks for watching. Owning a home is great investment, there are many little repairs that most home owners can fix very easily on their own. Glad I was able to help. Thanks again for watching
Follow up, went to Lowes and picked up the seal. It took maybe 10 minutes to repair. Works fine now. Mine was a little different, my inside has a yellow piece on top of the long black cylinder, that turns a little and unlocks it, then just lift it up and replace the seal. I appreciate the video, big help! Thanks, John
Thank you so much for this video. The seal in my 3 year old toilet just began leaking a couple of days ago. I'd heard that there was a color change in the replacement seal; that the yellow one would last longer. Thank you for explaining the procedure, I feel more confidant in doing this myself.
Terri S. Hi Terri glad I could help I've heard the same that the yellow is the improved seal. Usually if the part is less than 1 year old Kohler would send a replacement, here is their CS phone # if you have any questions. (1-800-4-KOHLER 1-800-456-4537) Thanks again for watching.
Thanks! And wow, your tax is over 8% there. Regardless, thanks for the demo. I ordered the whole flush valve canister along with an extra seal just in case. Was only $20 for the canister which includes a seal too. Sometimes the flush valve canisters get warped after excessive pressure when trying to flush (which is what happened to mine). The excessive force was because the seal was so bad that it didn't leak but rather fused to the canister. Then one day recently it tore, meaning the tank wouldn't fill again since it's constantly draining.
Very helpful. Thank you. However, while taking the unit out (giving a clockwise turn), I felt more comfortable to slip the canister up and then holding the pole/bar at the bottom where it connects to the base and giving a clockwise twist. When I tried doing it from the top, it felt as if it’s going to break. Otherwise your demonstration was great.
After you replace the seal, and the toilet still runs through what is next? It is much slower and takes a few minutes, but then you hear it running. I replaced these toilets about 1 1/2 years ago. I expected them to last longer
Paid $262.73 for this fix from a local plumber. He said the lock tab broke from wear on the canister. Now i'm pretty sure he broke it and i payed for it!
I have never heard of a lock tab wearing on the canister. It can easily break off while trying to remove the assembly if being forced. Normally the rubber seals or gaskets are the first to wear. Thank you for watching please like and subscribe
Excellent video. Quick. 2 the point. I'm a new homeowner on a sharp learning curve. R U saying the blue tablets help deteriorate the seal? Mine went bad shortly after using a tablet. Coincidence?!?
Trish Caldwell-Landsittel, it definitely seems that way. I haven't added anymore blue tablets and my seal in fine. They also sell the tablets that hang on the inside of the toilet bowl. Those dont have any contact with this seal. Thanks for watching and commenting. Welcome to the exciting world of home ownership where something always need repair or replacing :(
when I first took the lid off my tank the valve assembly was not loose like in this video and the gasket was fixed in place on the valve......this guys tank must have been leaking awfully bad! Suggest that if he let something go that far before trying to repair it.....maybe he needs a real plumber! lol
Thanks for watching. The valve assembly was not loose I unlocked it to make sure the new seal fit before installing as I mentioned at 0:21 in the video. If you hear water running thats a sign your toilet is losing water when not being flushed. Please like and subscribe if you liked this video.
Like stories...there's two side to every gasket. $12 for a ring of rubber...hmmmm. I flipped mine over so that the "unused" side of the original gasket is now facing the bottom......works like new! This will give me time to source a better gasket for less money as the Kohler one is way overpriced and doesn't work all that well to begin with.
Nicely done! Quick and easy, thanks!!
