This presentation was excellent. I'm a 71 yr old grandmother, and installed 3 toilets over my lifetime Your video was the first to explain the complete installation process including the plate on bottom of tank. My silent flow valve never turned off, water was filling up and draining continuously for 2 months.I had an astronomical water bill. I still do all my home repairs myself, and always look to TH-cam for assistance. I thank you for your video, well done! , toilet fixed with ease.
Your video is really great. Everyone has one on changing the canister seal but hardly anyone clearly explains about changing the 2 part tank and bowl flat seal. Your tool I bought saved me so much frustration. I hope I didn't get carried away and over tighten it!
Your video is a TH-cam gem. It is well thought-out; your delivery is spot on; and the 24:48 minutes are PACKED with worthwhile information. Thank you for sharing such great content.
My flat seal started to leak after only 2 years on a new Kohler. I purchased your wrench tool and it worked like a charm to aid in the repair. My channel locks wouldn't go wide enough so thank you for making that. Awesome job with the detail in this video!
Easy to install, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxjA-hDN2m8_mi0Dg0JD8U6QiArozIAc4I and comfortable. No idea what other people were talking about when they said it was difficult to install or uncomfortable.
This video was exactly what I needed! I had replaced the top gasket a couple of times but still would hear the toilet run for 5 to 7 seconds every few hours. I was nervous about taking the tank off, but your simple step-by-step directions and easy to follow explanations made the job a snap! Thank you for sharing!
Just did one of these. Your video helped a lot. HOWEVER, that 4" nut was on REAL tight. So tight, that when I went to turn it, the base that it's screwed on to started turning. I had to use a small shim of wood (about 3/8" thick), and wedge it between one of the base's hex flats near the bottom on inside the tank, to hold it from turning. Just a heads up for others that may encounter this same level of tightness.
It feels like a miracle that there is a tool to remove the nut. Not amount of trying will work. Just this tool. 3 trips to the hardwear store and lots of frustration. Thank you. Kohler should send these as part of their replacement kits and pay you for the copyright.
I used a hammer and chisel to take off the Flush Valve Nut. I never worked on a Kohler toilet with a Aquapiston canister flush valve . Wonderfully informative video. Thank you!
Thank you for a perfect step-by-step procedure. Ordering your wrench saved me the stress I got trying to get the old one off with an oil wrench. Oh it came off alright, in a zillion pieces after I couldn’t get the oil wrench to budge. Perfect creation, thank you! I used the silicone grease and bought the new yellow gasket, since the Kohler kits still include the red one (2024). Thank you again.
I appreciate this video. I replaced the yellow seal and was frustrated why there was still the same issue. You answered that issue and showed me how to fix it. Thanks.
Excellent, it seems there are dozens of videos on changing the Canister Seal, but until I found your video, I had nothing to go by regarding the toilet still leaking AFTER that seal was changed. Thank you. You have made my day.
Your video has got to be the most professional video on TH-cam. I wish more of the TH-cam How-To videos were this easy to understand & follow. Also, thank you for not trying to do it with one hand while holding your camera with the other!!
Your video gave me confidence in purchasing and installing a new tank to bowl seal in my Type 6 Kohler toilet. The video revealed how when I initially installed two of these toilets, I installed the seals incorrectly. Showing how to obtain and use the Kohler Toilet Parts List was a bonus. Thanks for the help.
Garren, this video and the information was the best! I also ordered YOUR WRENCH tool to remove the Kohler flush valve. The wrench made it so much easier. My the way, with your tool and instructions, this 63 year old lady "killed it"!!! Thanks.
Great video! Great help. I order the same wrench tool and fixed a Kohler toilet that leaked from the bottom of the tank. Saved a couple of hundred dollars. Thank you.
Thank you so much! This is really an extraordinary video, one of the very best home DIY repair videos I have ever seen. The details about specific part numbers for literally every single thing you mention in your video was for my particular situation a game-changer. There are a zillion videos that talk about the upper flush seal, but no one ever talks about the lower "flat seal", and not even the supply shops I talked to could come up with a part number. They kept bringing me the upper seal and saying "no, really, this is it." I walked away from this video with a complete solution, knowing what parts I needed and how to replace them. Just a next-level video. By the way, I was able to use a oil filter strap wrench to get mine off, but it was *not* easy, it still took a lot of tries. Thank you!
I have little faith in most technicians. Doing it myself, I know it will be done right. First I have to know how to do it. Thanks to you, You have given me the confidence to fix my own toilet.
Hi Garrent ! Please forgive using the public forum but the contact link doesn't work on ebay. I am interested in your tool, but the ebay site seez there are none left. Looking like I have to replace the bottom seal. I can use my strap wrench. I actually have a chain vise grip that would do the job too, but I kinda like to use your tool in support, since it was you that got me this far.Do you make them still?
Thanks Garren for your help, I was able to purchase your wrench and it worked flawlessly ! My toilet is repaired and since I have two other Kohlers in my home I am ready to do battle if another starts to leak.
You've done a very professional video here. Great detail and easy to understand. Just the right amount of well delivered dialogue. The parts section and pdf is a real plus. Thank you so very much!
This was perfect - thank you! I needed to go only as far as the upper seal, which came out easily. I then scraped away some crud, searched for the replacement seal, and found t hat a nearby Lowes had it. I went there with the exact row and bin number and was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Installation was quick, and the leak is gone, You saved me more than a $100 plumbing bill, so many thanks!
You're my hero Garren! Took mine apart this evening and can't get the flat seal to seal. Dielectric grease to the rescue, and you measured the thread left. Incredibly good video, not enough like these on here!
You don't need solutions until you have a problem. Thank you for solving mine! I acquired a Kohler toilet problem with a recent move into a 11 year old home: chain kept breaking because the gunky red canister seal caused the canister to 'stick'. The instructions you provided were excellent. After a trip to Lowe's to pick up the part ($6.99 seal), the problem was solved in 5 minutes! Thanks for providing an outstanding solution!
Fantastic video. I replaced the smaller seal and to my dismay the toilet continued leaking. Thank you for showing the complete process and explaining it clearly.
Garren, very clear and you being able to work with both hands frees up the camera work. So many plumbers try to show you whilst holding their phones.Thank you, extremely helpful for a complete novice like me
Another tool I found you can use is called a trigger clamp. I have some because I do a lot of wood working. I do also use them for a lot of other things and they do come in handy. Even if I didn't have one, I would have gotten one of these to do this job, you more likley would use this for other things, rather than a specialized tool, that I hope you never have to use again. Other wise, I am with everyone else, this is a great video and it helped me a lot.
Great video thanks. You really went above and beyond in your description, even to the point of making your own wrench! Don't mean to cut into your inventiveness, but Harbor Freight oil filter pliers work great on the large nut (get the self-adjusting ones). In a pinch, you can also use a bar clamp, but if you are going to spend money, get the oil filter pliers as they will come in handy for all sorts of odd ball jobs, even removing stubborn oil filters!
Thanks - aside from lots of lime build-up, replacing the deteriorated red gasket with a new yellow one solved my slow leak issue (so far!). The hardest thing was gently working that plastic mounting stalk back and forth incrementally to cut through the lime deposits locking it in place. Felt like it wouldn't take too much pressure to break the tip or one of the locking nubs off it!
Garren, this was the most informative video I've ever watched on TH-cam. I appreciate the attention to detail and the Kohler parts list you linked in the description. Please make more videos about fixing things around the house. My dad passed away and he always fixed things around the house for me. Now I'm having to rely on TH-cam to figure things out and it's videos like this that really help!
Great video! I was having an issue with water leaking through the flat flange after flushing. Started working my way through the video, and found the tank nuts were a little loose. Tightened them up, no more leak! Thanks much!
Absolutely Fabulous, your research & details I needed to replace the 3” Koehler Canister & stopped at the wrench and weeks passed by. Now eBay needs a week to ship + delivery time. I shall probably pick up 4” flexible wrench, today. Thank you. Blessings & Best Wishes Prosperous 2023 & Beyond. Stay Healthy (Mask is helpful) 💐💕🎶🎉 Ashwani
Thank you amazing and informative video, saved me hours of frustration as I couldn’t figure out how to remove the large ring... I feel validated knowing that you had to invent a tool to do so.
Thank you. Just received your tool yesterday. Fits perfectly. Nut is so tight, I’m going to need help getting the nut loose. Thank you for having this tool.
Totally just fixed the phantom flushing on my toilet by replacing the cylinder seal with a new yellow one and some silicone grease :-) Thanks for the video!
I have the older style Kohler (The Cimmaron). As best I can tell, that huge flush valve nut is about 4 1/4in. You are correct. I did not find any tools made for taking that off. As luck would have it, I do woodworking. What I did use and what worked fairly well.....was a 24" Bessey K-Clamp. These clamps are beasts and I have found so many uses for them past simple clamping... I was able to not only remove that nut, but also tighten down the new one with the clamp.
Perfect instruction. Thanks so much. I'm not a handy man at all. But you made this replacement easy. Challenge for me was the 4" nut was glued on to the bolt. I tried wd40, hammers, flathead etc. Ultimately I had to saw it off...which only took 5 mins. Much appreciated saved me a $250 minimum service call!
Thank you Sir, your presentation very professional and easy to follow and understand, and too, in using the information on ordering parts...again thank you
Hi thank you for your time and video. Brand new toilet from Koehler. Red gasket was put on wrong and leaks. pn 1097686 Off to Lowe’s to return. Wish me luck
Thank you for a terrific video. Extremely well conceived and produced. Perfect for what I needed. I will be purchasing that wrench as I had no idea how I was going to get that nut removed!
Omg I was about to change all my toilets. I have changed the canister flanges and they are still leaking! So now I’ll try the dialectic silicon and see if that stops the problem! Thank you. I’ll be ordering your tool!
Nice through video. I took a quick look at the eBay page but didn’t see the wrench there. I would never use A petroleum product like Vaseline on a o-ring or seal. That is exactly what makes them swell. It’s advice from the old days when selling o-rings was profitable. Stick with the silicone grease only.
Nice job Garren. Easily the best and most informative video I've ever seen on repairing internal Koehler flush parts. Thanks for taking the time to educate us.
Thank you, Garren. This video is very helpful. Instead of calling the plumber, I can now just go to Home Depot and pick up the right replacement for less than $10.
Very informative video, especially since it made me realize the issue with my toilet was just the guide needed to be replaced. There’s no need for me to take apart the whole tank, etc. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the great video. I’m about to do the same thing and changing all the gaskets to new. Possibly even the attachment plate. All easily available from Amazon.
Thank you for your video. It was so helpful. I do wish I had a tool like the one you have before i started working on mine but I did manage to get the 4 inch nut off by using a wet washrag over it then using a oil filter wrench I happened to have over that. But I'm going to get the right wrench before I do my other ones. Thx!
Good vid, I suggest replacing these toilets just because the toilet get tough to flush. The yellow concentric canister seal will get bubbles holding one side of the seal up and allowing water through the valve. And lastly the time it takes... so you really wanna have to do this again...ever. Gerber Avalanch or viper. 3 inch flush valve. Standard parts. No monkeying around.
Min 10:00 This was my question answered. I actually heard angels singing briefly. I live chatted with Kohler and they do not have this tool. Most of the DIY videos omit this key step. But one guy in his video had this tool... where is that tool??? My issue was a disintegrating gasket, part 1097686 at inside base of tank requiring this removal on a flapper style (not canister) drain. While at it I'm replacing gasket between outside of tank and toilet. Purchased your wrench just now!!! Thx
Thank you for your attention to detail, Garren. I have replaced many of the yellow seals, I think they are adversely affected by bleach tablets that my wife puts in the tank. Are there any old-fashioned "flapper" flush valves that will fit in the same large opening? I am guessing that something has to survive better than the $7 yellow seals. On another note, I think that I am onto the next level, soon to see if I have a bad flat seal, thanks to your educating me.

The BEST video to repair Kohler toilet.
Not a minute of information wasted.

Thanks for posting. My brand new toilet was leaking through this seal and This helped a lot. Btw a wood clamp works really well on that massive nut.
Man that is genius. I never even thought to try that. Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed and clear instructions. I was going crazy trying find the right parts, you clearly gave direction

Excellent job at explaining and one of the few to mention silicone grease. It was exactly what we need to complete the job. Thank you!
Thanks for this video. I learned more about my toilet than I ever thought I would...lol. Fixed my toilet for less than 10 dollars. Just subbed.
Excellent video, thank you and just what I was looking for... I just got my 4-inch wrench for removing the valve nut!! Here we go DIY!
Great video, my out of box toilet has leak. I will follow your instruction to improve sealing.

This is a complete explanation. Excellent.
Good video,i used a craftsmen wood clamp to take the 4” nut off
Perfect video to get me to eliminate the small seepage from the canister "flat" seal. Couldn't have done it with out your 4" wrench!
Very helpful! Thank you! Definitely buying that wrench!
Thank you, this video will save me a lot of time and frustration!
Thank you. Great step by step. You saved a tremendous amount of time.
Fantastic video I just replaced the internal parts of my Kohler toilet, no problem at all.👍🏽🙂

Thanks for posting an amazing video. I'm in Canada and will be ordering your 4" wrench from eBay! Keep up the good work.
did you order this in Canada and was it delivered?
Excellent Explanation! Great tool!
Great instructions! Been looking for a valve wrench! Thank you Garren!
Thank you so much for the great video. I’m about to do the same thing and changing all the gaskets to new. Possibly even the attachment plate. All easily available from Amazon.
