The key with Nvidia was that they introduced *real time* ray tracing to consumers - up until that point ray tracing had pretty much always been done with pre-rendering. The real time has since been dropped but it's still kind of implied that when talking about ray tracing on consumer platforms you're really talking about real time ray tracing as there's not much point in pre-rendering for consumer platforms

As someone who only upgrades my phone every 5+ years, the iPhone 15 looks incredible. It's essentially the 14 Pro for $200 less than it was a week ago. Really surprised Apple didn't make the action button accented like they did with the red cellular crown and Ultra orange action button of the watches as a way to differentiate the more luxury version.

Nvidia did not invent ray tracing. Ray tracing is a rendering technique that has been around for several decades and was first introduced in computer graphics research in the 1960s. Nvidia, along with other companies and researchers, has played a significant role in advancing and popularizing ray tracing in the gaming industry through the development of dedicated hardware like RTX GPUs and software technologies like NVIDIA RTX.
Ray tracing has been a fundamental technique in computer graphics for realistic rendering, and it has evolved and improved over time through contributions from various entities in the field of computer graphics and gaming.

Do I want the 5X or the better portrait?
I hate it when I need a zoom but it does not happen that much... but again how often did I bother with the portrait mode?
Mostly it's been pull out and take a photo.
So probably the 5X is better.
This new feature to be able to chose the focal point later on is incredible!
Great for having less mistake photos where the wrong thing was in focus.
Also for picture stories for blogs when high lighting certain person then the other.
I'll be getting one each for me and my business partner so will probably get one of each and deal with the bulky MAX to just see... then return it if it's not as much use as I'd hope

I chose the White iPhone 15 Pro Max. I am not sure how white it really is. Hard to get true accuracy from videos sometimes. I normally love blue, but I didn't care for the blue on my iPhone 13 Pro Max so much. I figured if I went white, I'd be able to use cases that would give it some cooler colors in the end, since White is pretty neutral and you can get clear lightly colored cases.
Iphone 13 Pro cases pretty much cover all the color no matter which color you chose on your iPhone so in the long run, What did it matter what the color was? I just hope I will really like it. I wish we had better options in the Pro Max department like apple colors Red and Green don't disappoint too much. Thank you for the video.

It's entirely possible that the flash in the iPhone isn't fast enough for 20Gbit to make sense, that's already well into NVMe territory and the much lower power flash chips in phones are probably not as fast as the ones in dedicated SSDs (even the older gen 3 drives that were running those sorts of speeds)

nVidia did NOT create Raytracing. Raytracing is a process for simulating lighting that has existed for decades. What nVidia did with their RTX cards is add special hardware optimized specifically around this process. The outcome of this is such that using RTX, some minimal amount of raytracing is now able to be performed in realtime, e.g. in video games. Prior to that, raytracing was basically just relegated to long running render processes that would be used for something like a Pixar movie or VFX.

    • @fredrickbambino

@@fredrickbambino Apple didn’t invent touchscreen, they just perfected multitouch for mass use. Same with NVIDIA, ray tracing and path tracing have been around for decades! What they did was to add ray triangles and optical flow accelerators to render 1/10th of the rays or maybe even less in some games in realtime. Even today with 4090, the fastest gaming GPU on the planet, Path Tracing is not possible.

    • @dylandenton2543
      @dylandenton2543 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@fredrickbambino The difference is that, before the iPhone, multitouch displays practically didn’t exist. It was a technology with virtually no use. Ray tracing is widely used in animation, it just hasn’t been used in video games because it was previously too power hungry.
An alternative analogy is Nokia bringing optical image stabilization to smartphones in 2012. It is the sole reason we have telephoto lenses on phones, why the Galaxy phones have their 100x zoom. It allows us to do things that just weren’t possible without OIS. And yet, OIS was nothing new. It was already used in professional cameras and lenses. Nokia just brought it to the phone, opening a major door for amateur photographers.

14:50 It *has* to be a crop. There is no other way to change the apparent FOV if you aren’t changing the optical configuration.
Just because it has 24MP output dimensions doesn’t mean it’s not using a crop of the sensor. They’re probably just using ML upscaling algorithms to normalize the output dimensions after the cropped capture.
Apple really managed to confuse people on this one, including their best reviewers. Bravo, reality distortion field.

Marques, a question about file transfer speed: If both the sending and receiving devices for AirDrop are WiFi 6 (theoretical maximum 1200 MB/s) which should be the biggest bottleneck for AirDrop given the fast SSD speeds of both new Macs and new iPhones, shouldn't that be an adequate and preferred large file transfer method between devices, not Lightning? Certainly USB 3.1 should be faster than AirDrop but I wonder how much in real world testing?

have you seen the LTT video where the cast is trying to differentiate a ray traced and a rasterized lightning version of tomb raider side by side, and they have to look *extremely* closely to discover even the most minute difference?
yeah, ray tracing is overhyped placebo bs - of course its promotional stuff always includes very specific scenes in games where the difference vs rasterized lighting is obvious, but in a real use case 99.9% of the time ray tracing is literally indistinguishable from it, but hey at least it costs a massive amount of fps 👍

@@mencibenci To be fair, they were looking at very early games because they were assessing 20 series cards. I wouldn't be surprised if ray tracing genuinely looks better than rasterisation now, what I don't know is how much of that is rasterisation falling behind due to neglect in heavily ray traced titles and how much is any genuine improvement in lighting (eg CP2077 is famously constrained in terms of available development resources yet they were the first game to implement path tracing, a lighting tech that makes even the 4090 chug. I can't help but think if they're investing effort into path tracing like that they decide to spend fewer resources on old school lighting methods that look great but only if devs optimise them properly)

what mobile companies are not getting with RayTracing is that to make it viable and popular, they need devices in mid-range and budget range to do the same thing.
NVidia launched RTX throughout their 2000s.
If they only gave Raytracing in their top 2090, 3090, 4090, etc.
it won't have been popular in PC games as well.
So unless Qualcomm, Exynos, etc bring raytracing in mid-range chips, it will be just a useless thing for even the flagships as no one is gonna bother making stuff only for high end devices.
So Samsung in A series, Google in both Pro and A series, Nothing, OnePlus, etc all need to start putting RayTracing for it to be actually be popular and useful.

Ray tracing isn't really useful on phones in the current market, you aren't going to see a meaningful difference in your current favourite gacha game using mostly pre-renders on even a 6.7 inch screen, particularly when it's built to run smoothly and look good on an iPhone Xr even today. Ray tracing is a marketing buzz word that people currently associate with "Ooh! Shiny! Looks really good!" It's a line they can put in the marketing copy that may or may not find some edge case use in a niche app or two (there's a reason, for all its faults, that Google didn't bother trying to shove ray tracing hardware in Tensor for instance)

Nvidia definitely did not invent ray tracing. That was when they tried to put it on their high end card. But it was so bad it was slower than software ray tracing and also used so much power and generated so much heat it was useless. It took them a couple of years to get it to work usefully. It took them a couple of more years to work well. Considering the animus between Apple and Nvidia, I believe that Apple was giving a dig by saying that their new ray tracing was four times faster than the software ray tracing.
The tetra prism shortens the light path within the phone and opens up space for say, a larger battery. But all a periscope camera means is that the light path is bent 90 degrees, which is what happens here. The fact that the sensor is again bent 90 degrees is really exactly what a submarine periscope does.
I believe that Apple dropped the 128gb pro max because almost no one was buying it. Shooting Apple RAW and Prorez needs more storage. So the 128gb model was redundent.

The first gen RTX cards were way faster than software ray tracing, the problem was that at the time most games didn't support it and the ones that did didn't really use it that much, so the game in rasterisation only mode (which does no ray tracing at all) looked about the same but ran way faster. These days ray tracing is used more and the performance is definitely better, but there was never a time when software ray tracing was faster.

Wow, okay, so Nvidia did NOT create raytracing in 2018. That's like saying Apple invented mobile phones in 2007. (6:20 in this video)
Raytracing was effectively introduced to computer graphics by Turner Whitted in 1980. It's how we get reflections, refractions and bounced light in early CG. Very computationaly intensive.
Otherwise, this is a fantastic video- love the group chat. Just wait until you guys find out about Silicon Graphics and Crays. (My old company, where I worked)
