1983. Written by the Bee Gees. "Islands in the Stream" topped the Hot 100 (two weeks), Country (two weeks), and Adult Contemporary (four weeks) charts. It was the 1985 American Music Awards winner for Favorite Country Single, and 20 years later topped CMT's poll of the best country duets of all time. Dolly says "excuse me Kenny" when she accidentally steps on his foot.
1998 The chorus for "Islands In The Stream" was used in a popular rap song "Ghetto Supastar" by Pras ft Old Dirty Bastard and Mya (#15 US 1998). th-cam.com/video/MnWogQTfSIY/w-d-xo.html It was featured in the Warren Beatty/Halle Berry movie 'Bullworth'. The Bee Gees later recorded a version of 'Islands In The Stream' to include in their greatest hits packages ("The Greatest Hits: The Record"; "Number Ones"; and the "Mythology" box set) and in the Bee Gees version of the song, they replace the last chorus of the song with the chorus from 'Ghetto Superstar'.

I was honored twice to meet her. Both times in Nashville. She always looked perfect -- just stunning. And the second time, she scared the crap out of me. In that particular restaurant, she wanted table number 42. Always. And I knew she was coming in with her then-current manager. So I was near the front door, but also trying to keep an eye on the bar and the restaurant floor. So I had my back to the front door watching the action, and I finally turned around. And she was, I would say, less than two feet from me. Even though I knew she had a reservation, I was blown away. She was gorgeous! But more importantly, she was lovely. It is hard to find famous personalities so genuine these days...~
As someone mentioned earlier, written by The Bee Gees. There was a backlash against them after their success from “Saturday Night Fever”, so they backed off performing and just started writing #1 hits for everyone else. Talent beyond comprehension.
You might want to do a Bee Gee's deep dive in songs they've written and those who've succeeded with them. Yvonne Elliman, If I can't have you is a good start. Also Dolly and Kenny were never an item. They were both extrovert and cheery by nature and the chemistry was just them to a tee :)

Just perfection with two great voices and a great song written by Barry Gibb. When music was real and just real quality. No they didn’t have a thing. Dolly was a one man woman
I dunno maybe just my perception but the country singers from that era were a close group of artists, they all seemed to have expressed through their music which is true country song writing and artistry their life experiences in song, but they were a close nit genre, that’s how Nashville especially seemed to me, ai maybe wrong, but ai know these guys were great great friends, I think Dolly could make anyone feel fo for table immediately so imagine how good she was as a friend, Kenny is that mans man but a dam good bloke, someone that’s have your back, but also wouldn’t hurt a fly if he could avoid it, people who can inspire and truly look up too as artist and people, if you ever needed an example it would be these too. Great song, loved it when it came out as a teenager and it’s as timeless today. Just listen to the audience in any live performance of either of these two let alone together, it says it all. 🤘

I had 7 kids in 9 years. (No twins) and the last couple of weeks seem like nine months it’s self. I even had some 3-4 weeks early and still seemed that way. Our bodies know us better than our minds do sometimes. May God bless you with a safe and amazing birth. Thanks for being a trooper
@@user-jn6bi7mn4m I think they are trying to keep the video from being blocked by TH-cam.
Barry Gibb is on record saying when he wrote it he thought of Dolly and then Dolly wanted to do it with Ken.
RIP Kenny. Nice choice guys. When I first met my better half, she told me this was going to be "our song" (I had no choice in the matter.) Over 30 years later it still is. Two really beautiful people singing a beautiful song. Thanks again.
Kenny did a duet with Sheena Easton of the Bob Seager song, We've Got Tonight, but you guys should check out the live version of Kenny & Dolly singing it. Just again proves that wonderful chemistry they had.
Definitely a must, my favorite!
Yes.
I absolutely love it!
I was going to say the same thing.

Love Dolly & Kenny, and you guys are so cute together, best wishes for the new baby, love from Australia.
You also have to react to Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes’ duet “Don’t Fall In Love With A Dreamer”. I think you’ll enjoy that one as well. 💖
That was one of my favorite duets ever
Loved how well Kim Carnes sounded with Kenny…one of my favorites
No fake feelings here. They were true friends to the very end.
Wow, lucky to even be in the same room with such an amazing woman, Great story 😄
They were best friends for sure.
I love you J&Amber, y'all are amazing, true Oklahoma spirit!
Barry Gibb wrote this classic duet song! Get some rest Amber! Love & Hugs! ❤️
They had a friendship like none other! Their chemistry is intoxicating.
As someone mentioned earlier, written by The Bee Gees. There was a backlash against them after their success from “Saturday Night Fever”, so they backed off performing and just started writing #1 hits for everyone else. Talent beyond comprehension.
Saturday Night Fever made them synonymous with disco, so the disco sucks movement and death of disco kinda hurt their prospects.
Disco killed their careers in America, but they continued to have hits around the rest of the world
Dolly and Kenny had a friendship that was more like family than most family’s . Such wonderful people both of them.
I have always LOVED LOVED LOVED this song !!
JUST SUPER GREAT FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They also wrote "Love Me" for Yvonne Elliman.
Olivia Newton-John "Come On Over", Conway Twitty "Rest Your Love On Me", Dionne Warwick "Heartbreaker", Barbra Streisand (with Barry) "Guilty", just to name a few
Yvomne Elliman's version of "I Don't Know How to Love HIm" CHILLS
two kindness souls and voices!
Ooh one of my all-time favs!! Two legends together performing an iconic Country-Pop cross over HIT SONG, courtesy of the legends The Bee Gees!!! PERFECT all the way around!! Great pick guys!!
Again you guys are so awesome
I am so glad you reacted to their duet! I know you love Dolly and Kenny but you also love Barry Gibbs and this song was written by Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibbs. One of the best duets ever recorded. Your reactions are so perfect! You both definitely reached the daily goal of making someone smile, because I'm smiling from ear to ear!
I don't usually like live versions as much as the studio-recorded ones, but this is an exception. I love everything about this.
They were such good friends. She was devastated at his passing. They never had a relationship that was more than professional, but they always joked about it over the years, how people just assumed they had a fling.
They did a few duets together and were best of friends. They admitted in interviews that there was chemistry between them, but they decided to stay platonic which was better because the chemistry stayed. You could feel it watching them. This is my favorite all time duet and I listen to it so often. This was the best video of it too in my opinion. RIP Kenny.
As a metal head I love Dolly… she’s a truly beautiful person inside and out.
They were amazing together....Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton were longtime collaborators and friends for decades (Since 1983), but never dated...Thanks guys, Peace
When she said sorry Kenny she stepped on his foot! Love how she can pick it right back up with out missing a beat
BTW this was Country Music's Song of the Year in 1982n and Song of the Decade for the 80s.
Dolly's voice in particular is always straight to the heart. An example of the famous dictum, "It's the singer, not the song".
OMG, this song takes me back to watching my parents dance in the living room. Love Dolly and Kenny.
Her voice "projects" or "cuts through the mix".
So nice to see this. That was a magic moment. I remembered when this aired. When Dolly walked out in that dress our house went crazy. Next day EVERYBODY was talking about it, the song and the dress. It was an incredibly big hit. Sounds a great live as it did on the studio cut, plus their extraordinary personal charm and duet chemistry makes it a transcendent classic. Great thing about TH-cam, from that televised show untill the next time I saw it was about 20 years. Now I can revisit it anytime. Thanks for you folks doing this one. Some other great Dolly gems:
"Those Memories" from Trio
"Rockin Years" With Ricky van Shelton
"I Will Always Love You" live duet with Vince Gil
"I will Always Love You" live on Bingolotto (her best live solo performance)
"Dumb Blonde" live from the award celebration for Fred Foster
"Train Train" live from Austin City Limits
As school teachers you should know Dolly has a program that gifts books to children from birth to age five “Dolly Parton’s imagination library”
She has given away over 1,000,000 childrens books.
Another great song written by the Bee Gees and sang beautifully by two icons.
Did you know Kenny started out in the group the Association -- big hit was Cherish. Then he formed his own group Kenny Rogers & the 1st Edition -- hits were Just Dropped In, Somethings Burning & one of the classic hits of all time, "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town"
Ruby, You picked a fine time to leave Lucille, the Gambler, Coward of the County, so many more.
I went to elementary school with Kenny Rogers son
They were crazy wealthy- the horses had their own spa- but also very giving from my knowledge at the time
Before he sang country, he was rock. Check out Kenny Rogers and the 1st Edition singing Just Dropped in (to See what Condition my Condition was in).
One of the highlights of my youth growing up in the 70s was eating dinner in an old farmhouse with Dolly and the Porter Waggoner Band..
She was loving and kind, unpretentious and her country upbringings shown through to all.
Should I ever be fortunate enough to see her again I will ask her if she remembers that night.
You should watch “We’ve got tonight” Dolly and Kenny live - their interaction is hilarious and the singing amazing!
Yes I agree, the live version with Dolly is pure magic, the humor back & forth melts my heart
Dolly is just so darn cute! ☺️ She has such a sweet little laugh and disposition!
When you're a good person that's humble it shows in your singing and yeah, singing with somewhat of a soulmate as a friend always rocks :)
Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees wrote this song for Kenny and Dolly.
Written by the Bee Gee's ! Great music.
They had a very special true brother and sister friendship for decades! They had music, values and faith n common!
Country music legends who crossed over individually and collectively onto the pop charts and top 40 radio stations around the world.
They had a deep love and respect for each other, were close, close friends, but were never romantically involved.
Just perfection with two great voices and a great song written by Barry Gibb. When music was real and just real quality. No they didn’t have a thing. Dolly was a one man woman
Thank you for the correction they were great friends 😊 ❤️
A superb choice, two of the all time greats of country music performing together.
It's such a fun song to react to.
Good luck to you Amber, keep well.
Dolly can harmonize like no other. 🎶
"Don't fall in love with a dreamer" by Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes is pretty good too
Yes, I love that song!!
This is “our song” for my husband and I. It’s cheesy and makes us laugh, but it’s actually a really good song too!
I’m praying for a safe and easy delivery for you. Congratulations on your new family member.
Cheesy? Not at all
Saw Kenny Rogers in concert many, many moons ago down in Houston. She surprised us all when she came out and sang just this one song with him. The place went absolutely nuts!!!! Enjoyed your reaction! Thank you!!!
Dolly is AMAZING. Incredible talent and an incredible human. She funds vaccine research and all kinds of great humanitarian efforts. A SHERO!
Dolly has The Imagination Library that gives kids free books , I donate to it myself because I believe all kids should have books to read at home 😊❤️
Dolly is an American icon and classic. An actress, singer/song writer who takes all the quips about her physique in stride and can laugh along with everyone. Tennessee, you gave us one beautiful, magical soul. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤They just don't come any better than this beautiful soul.
Female Friday Suggestion: Emmylou Harris is a versatile female singer/songwriter crossing so many genres. She has an album with all duets. Amazing. "Harris thrived on collaboration -- for example, her Trio albums with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, as well as duo albums with Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and Rodney Crowell."
My personal favorite song of hers is Red Dirt Girl.
th-cam.com/video/c4bufWfOnuA/w-d-xo.html
She also has a duet with Dan Fogelberg , Only The Heart May Know...beautiful..
I was also going to suggest a song from the "Trio" album after they mentioned hearing Dolly's voice in a group. The three women (Dolly, Linda, and EmmyLou) blend so beautifully!
Lady of the rose 🌹
My favourite
Emmylou harris song 😎❤
Yes, Red Dirt Girl
Love Dolly’s trios with Linda Rondstadt and Emmy Lous Harris. Also - Martina McBride had a duet album and she and Dolly sing I Still Miss Someone. Dolly can literally sing anything with anyone.
Love love love Kenny and Dolly. This song . Your reaction. Thx for sharing ♥.
Amber, the book "Traranula" by Bob Dylan was for you. Since I learned you loved poetry, and the English language, I knew you had to have this book. My favorite subject in school was always English. I learned to love how words can be turned around and used in different ways. Please read "Tarantula", while you're laying down! I'm serious! I'm 65 years old, and only 1 state above you, if I have to come down there and help Rob make you lay down, I will!! Teasing, lol! Love you both like my Kids! Amber, please, please, please, take care of yourself and the Baby! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤔🤔🤔😎
Awesome thank you! I love books. Like you English was my favorite subject. I used to love to write, and spent so many hours sitting outside laying under a big tree with a good book! Books (like music) can be such a great escape and also help you discover yourself! Also I am resting now, Kiya is a cuddle bug and makes laying down and resting the best. 😊
I love this song. Kenny and Dolly were just very good friends. Dolly has been with the same husband, Carl, since they married in 1966. This is a classic and I love this live version with the ad-libs.💖💖
