"Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen."
Fun fact: Bonnie didn’t write this one, but she was the original artist. It was written by Mike Reid who played in the NFL - he was a first round draft pick for the Bengals. He retired from football to be a full-time songwriter. And Bonnie, who made this a hit, is much more of a blues-based guitarist who’s got some genuine chops - so it was unusual for her to have a piano-based ballad as a hit song.
One of my all time memorable concert moments was seeing Bonnie do this song live @ a smaller venue in Colorado Springs. You could hear a pin drop it was so quiet during this song.
I bought her first two albums in the early 1970s, the first was self-titled and the second was Give It Up. Those are really great and showcase her brilliant guitar playing. Love her!
I’m with you on those man. Her voice was more pure on her first few albums. She played in Geneva, NY where I went to college in 75’, but I had a final exam the next morning ! Finally saw her show six years ago and just loved it.
Bonnie Raitt is AMAZING!! You should definitely listen to her first two albums from the early 70’s. Bluesy, and so incredibly soulful. She’s one of my all time favorites. Thanks for listening to her!!
I've been in love with Bonnie Rait since about 74 when i saw her play. She's got the voice the looks and she's a badass blues player. The perfect woman!💞😜
For me it was hearing "Runaway" in the late 70's. I just parked at my destination and sat in the car until the song finished so I could hear the announcer say who it was. I've only done that one other time in my life.
Bonnie can melt you with silky smooth or crank it up and kick it out in the blink of an eye. A constant artist in my life's soundtrack (and I'm 65) who cut her teeth on blues music and paved a path for many to follow. John Raitt, her father, was a singer/actor, mostly in theater. She's the queen of the slide guitar playing...you can have quite a journey checking out her music catalog.

Bonnie Raitt's father John Raitt was an actor and musical star in the 40's and 50's. You should check out Bonnie's song "Angel From Montgomery" that was written by John Prine.

I went through a heartbreaking situation 30 plus years ago, and this song resonates so powerfully with me even today. I can not hear it without tearing up or sometimes just breaking down and crying. Not over still wanting that person, but there is nothing like the feeling of loving someone with your whole being, and knowing without a doubt that it will never be returned to you. It just devastates you. This song brings across those feelings so clearly that it could have happened yesterday...not a lifetime ago. Great review!!

An old friend once told me he ran into her one nite down on Bourbon Street and asked her for her autograph. He told me she said "Sure Sugar!" He said his heart melted right there in the street 😊
@@FloridaRocks I met her backstage in Houston (Liberty Hall, for Houstonians!) in about 1971, touring as she must have been, for either her debut or sophomore Warner Bros. album. I was the music editor for my high school paper, and eagerly showed her my newly-minted "press pass," and she quipped, "Oh, great....now I know you're a narc!" Remember the year, and that line's relevance suddenly hits home! Hilarious, and an awfully nice gal!
"I Can't Make You Love Me" one of the best ballads from the 90's. Increíble songwriting, music and lyrics. Bruce Hornsby is playing piano on Bonnie Raitt's version.
Thank you for showing the respect for Bonnie. I saw her in concert the week that Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a plane crash. She called him her "pride and joy". You should have heard her that night. The audience wept with her.

This was my breakup song with my ex-husband. Rough time in my life, knowing the person you love with all your heart...doesn't love you anymore. Very very good song.
Im late to the party here. Im sorry it ended for you and your ex husband. I can relate i was in a long relationship that ended badly. I still miss her. I did move forward . Met a woman fell in love with her. We were married 10 years. I lost her 2 years ago. Life went full circle for me. Everyone has things in life that happen good and bad. The best i could do was just accept it for what it was and try to move forward. Its a struggle but im getting there slowly.
Miss Bonnie, beauty, talent and social conscience. After battling the demons of stardom she has been a crusader to get the royalties back into the hands of the Black artists who influenced her music.
Such a painfully truthful song. Many of us have been with someone who really likes us and enjoys being around us, will never love us because they just can't. You can't make them either regardless how much you try. It hurts!
And when you are on the other side of the relationship, it hurts just as much because the person is someone you have deep feelings for but not the right ones.
The essence of art- any art- is to make you feel something. Be it joy, sadness, a belly laugh, or just plain wonder, that's what makes it special and worth experiencing.
Most people can feel this song. I know I'm not the only one who's been in love with someone who didn't feel it back. When it happens for real, I think it never goes away. Even years later, you carry it around and even if you've moved on it still stings just a little tiny bit.
This song always makes me cry, because I can relate to it so much. I've been following Bonnie since the late 60s, and have probably seen her live more times than I've seen anyone else. She is just as good, if not better, live.
This brings me close to tears every time I listen to it .. especially the line "I'll close my eyes. Then I won't see, the love you don't feel when you're holding me" .. Brilliantly written, heart-breaking song, and no-one sings it better than Bonnie Raitt.
Written by 2 MEN! Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin Bonnie was/is a tough as nails road tested blues player. But there was always a sense of human frailty. This song done by her always touched me. She was brave enough to expose some vulnerability.
Music is a morphing thing. It changes from singer to singer. It's magical and alive and each performance is elusive. It can never be replicated exactly the same again, even if it's the same artist and band. I love that there are several versions of a song. It's the gift that keeps giving!

"Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen."
This song is so deep. There's nothing harder on the soul than one-sided love. Thank you, Bonnie.
Nobody sings this song like the great Bonnie Raitt. She’s a country soul who crossed over many genres of fans admiring her music and voice.
Cool info, I did not know this. Thanks!
Love his song and video for "Walk on Faith".... definitely worth checking out
Thanks for the info Randy .... good move on Reid’s part.
Wow.. I had no idea.. thanks.
Wow, did not know that, thanks for sharing that fact, a NFL player.
This is one of those songs that makes your heart hurt. The way she sings it feels so raw. One of my favorite songs for sure!
One of my all time memorable concert moments was seeing Bonnie do this song live @ a smaller venue in Colorado Springs. You could hear a pin drop it was so quiet during this song.
Written by the great Mike Reid. IMO one of the best and most versatile songwriters ever in Nashville.
James Taylor, about Bonnie Raitt, "The voice I love most in the world."
Glad you found this rabbit hole...keep going! "Let's Give em Something to Talk About " next✌
Thing called love is a real banger too
@@thesimulation9651 Both John Hiatt songs. Would love to see Jamel check out some of his stuff.
Love when she teams up with John Prine.
No one can top Bonnie singing this song with the GREAT Bruce Hornsby on piano!
Bonnie is one amazing musician - a legendary slide guitar player on top. Thanks for choosing this one.
Without disrespect to any other artist who admired and tried, SHE IS THE TRUTHFUL OWNER OF THIS SONG!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!
No need for a do over!!!!!
Bonnie Rait and Bruce Hornsby. With a duo like that you can't miss.
Love Bruce Hornsby on piano.
I love her song Blender (I think) from the Tower Theater. In the 70's
She's a true performer, who sounds as good live as she does in the studio.
Doesn't take many bars of music to become a Bonnie Raitt fan....forever.....
Michael McDonald was one of the back up singers on that song and several others on that album!
Have you seen the duet she did with her Dad with Boston Pops in 92’ ? What a great performance !
@@tcanfield I have seen it, just wonderful!
Jamel, trust me. Bonnie Raitt’s version of “Angel From Montgomery” -a John Prine song.
Get it done son. You’re the best!
Oh my god yes ....
It's so fine. John Prine's lyrics and Bonnie's style. I've been "with Bonnie Raitt" since I was 14yrs. old. That was 1973...still love her.
Angel from Montgomery is arguably one of the best folk songs written. John Prine is the writer, but Bonnie's version has the most impact. Better still, listen to John and Bonnie together. Make an old broad happy, PLEASE REVIEW. th-cam.com/video/8TQK2h2BPNM/w-d-xo.html
RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@lindanorris2455 Damn straight, sister!
“I will lay down my heart, and I’ll feel the power.....but you won’t.” OMG
Exactly Laura, that line kills me every time. I think you have to live that line to understand it, I know I did.
The best song about unrequited love. So sad, but beautifully performed, both vocally by Bonnie and Bruce Hornsby on the piano.
And beautifully written by Mike Reid.
This is a one-of-a-kind song by a one-of-kind artist.
Bonnie Raitt's father John Raitt was an actor and musical star in the 40's and 50's. You should check out Bonnie's song "Angel From Montgomery" that was written by John Prine.
There are some great videos out there of Bonnie singing show tunes with her Dad. Here is an "Evening at the Pops" episode with 4 musical greats: Bonnie Raitt, John Raitt, Mark O'Connor, and (of course) John Williams with the baton. th-cam.com/video/bQRA0McI6ag/w-d-xo.html
Her version of John Prine’s Angel From Montgomery is pure Gold. Carful man, Bonnie Raitt is a beautiful rabbit hole. Check out her slide guitar work
Right in the feels, this song hits me.
Please react to Bruce Hornsby's, Mandolin Rain. He's playing the piano here for Bonnie. But he's a great singer and songwriter too.
Yes Bruce Hornsby adds so much to this performance
Absolutely
Amen my friends
Bonnie brings a truth that can not be duplicated. If you aren't touched by this master, you're not human.
Bonnie is one of THE GREATEST blues singers .... she even recorded and performed with John Lee Hooker !!!!
Bonnie Raitt has the best band playing live music EVER !!
..she is the Best Female Blues Slide guitar player Everrrrrrrr !!!!!
" Thing called Love ". Listen to this song. She was put on the map for this song
@@kelligallicchio325 Check out her "Road Tested" live album, esp "Love Letter".... arrangement is so tasty it's like a stiletto😁
Bonnie is one of the most underrated songwriter/musician back to the 70’s. Plays a mean slide guitar also.
I don’t know about underrated. She’s won 10 Grammys and has had 26 Grammy nominations. She’s awesome!
Her song "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About" is an awesome one as well.
I forgot to put that on my list.
Bonnie was a child prodigy who played with all the great blues artists. She still promotes them and is happy to just play background for them
I went through a heartbreaking situation 30 plus years ago, and this song resonates so powerfully with me even today.
I have the exact same reaction as you Debbie, and the exact same experience !
I feel u both...tragically and completely 💔
I'm feel the pain too sometimes Debbie!
Without a doubt, and give hugs and love and kisses to Allen Shamblin and Mike Reid who wrote this soul stealer.
That will melt the coldest heart. You can feel the heartbreak. It is palpable. Perfection!
Wikipedia: "In August 2000, Mojo magazine voted "I Can't Make You Love Me" the eighth best track on its The 100 Greatest Songs of All Time list. The song is ranked at number 339 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time." Also: "Raitt has received 11 Grammy Awards. She is listed as number 50 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 89 on the magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
Can't hit enough thumbs up !!!!!!
@@aviatom1 I suggest visiting a hitchhikers convention.😉
Yes!! 🙌🙌 She gives me goosebumps every time!
ANGEL FROM MONTGOMERY!
My favorite song by Bonnie Raitt. You can feel the pain in her voice. thank you
Bonnie Raitt is amazing - so many great songs from her to pick from. Angel From Montgomery, Love Letter, Runaway , coud go on an on.
Stunningly Beautiful and Melodic!!
This always makes me cry. Not just because it’s beautiful, but because I have been there.
Awesome 👍 reaction. Love you 😘 , Love her. Thankyou 💙
More Bonnie!! Here are a few great options: Love Sneakin' Up on You, Something to talk about, Thing Called Love. So many great ones...
Nick of Time is a great song too, from the album of the same name
She is great. Her dad John was self-taught great; Broadway got him out of the coal mines. She’s an excellent guitarist. She, Jackson Browne, and Stevie Wonder sang “Amazing Grace” at Stevie Ray Vaughan’s funeral.
The piano is played by Bruce Hornsby. Check him out as well. He had several very good hits.
He has so much good music beyond the songs most people know too. Just a great artist.
Mandolin rain 💗
If you enjoyed this collaboration, here‘s another one with just another great female vocalist:
Chaka Khan - ‚Love me still‘

Raitts voice is so unique, and this song highlights her incredible talent. Beautiful, sad song.
This was my breakup song with my ex-husband. Rough time in my life, knowing the person you love with all your heart...doesn't love you anymore. Very very good song.
Felt. Yes this is the perfect example of my last encounter with my ex husband.
Classic, great song - thanks, Jamel
Bonnie always moves me. Whether it is her soulful, expressive voice or her kick ass slide guitar playing, she is the best at making you feel.
Been waiting for someone to get to Bonnie. She's so good on so many things.
My eyes get moist and it warms my heart each and every time I listen to this song.
She has done so much for blues singers trying to get the recognition and monetary gains they deserve
Charley Pride passed away today. He was the only Black country singer that I knew of. 27, number 1 songs! You could slip in one of country's legends.
I have been there myself
Bonnie Raitt is a national treasure. She is a very good blues artist, fantastic slide guitarist. Love her!
This song always makes my eyes water. Beautiful.
Oh my the memories. Another underrated artist from back in the day. Love her voice .
This song always makes me cry, because I can relate to it so much. I've been following Bonnie since the late 60s, and have probably seen her live more times than I've seen anyone else. She is just as good, if not better, live.
"angel from Montgomery" Live by Bonnie Raiit--great John Prine song.
Bonnie Raitt- "Give Them Something To Talk About".... next, please!
Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin
Bonnie was/is a tough as nails road tested blues player.
