    Seal. One of the most wonderful voices of all time. While he was best known for his silky smooth, tender ballads ("Love's Divine" is breathtaking), he had a harder-edged side, particularly early in his career (when he still had hair). "Crazy" is a total banger, as is "Killer" and "Get It Together". ANY of those three will get you up and moving, guaranteed. More info - his full name is Sealhenry Samuel, born in England to a Nigerian mother and an Afro-Brazilian father. He is also well known as the former husband to supermodel Heidi Klum, with whom they had four children. One of my favorite stories that he told in an interview happened once when he was in a hotel, walking down a hallway to his room, when he heard one of his songs being played in another guest's room. He knocked on the door, and the woman who answered was so amazed when he picked up where the song was, right there in the hallway!

I remember hearing this song about 8 o'clock one evening on my cars radio. I had to pull over to listen to it. I was across the street from a shopping mall and when the song was done I pointed the prow of my big old beast of an Oldsmobile 98 to the mall and within 15 minutes I owned that very last copy they had on CD. I still have that disc and it resides permanently in the CD player in my truck. The entire album from a musical standpoint is gorgeous and I like to listen to it at about 3 o'clock in the morning while I'm just cruising aimlessly. It's calming yet emotional and it allows me to think clearly about my life in general.

    The instrument J is most likely wondering about is an oboe.
    The thing that makes this song, apart from the backing orchestra, is Seal's masterful use of overdubbing. It gives the song a Medieval choral sound.

    "Kiss from a Rose" is a song from Seal's second eponymous album. The song was first released as a single in July 1994 and included in the film The NeverEnding Story III that year. It was re-released a year later in 1995 as part of the Batman Forever film soundtrack, helping it top the charts in the United States and Australia. It also reached the top 10 in several other countries, including Canada, France, Iceland and Norway. At the 1996 Grammy Awards, it won awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
    "Kiss from a Rose" was written in 1987, several years prior to the release of Seal's eponymous debut album from 1991. After writing the song, Seal felt "embarrassed by it" and "threw the tape in the corner". Seal did not present it to producer Trevor Horn until the recording sessions for Seal II. In 2015, Seal said of the song: "To be honest, I was never really that proud of it, though I like what Trevor did with the recording. He turned that tape from my corner into another 8 million record sales and my name became a household name".
    "Kiss from a Rose" was the second single taken from the Batman Forever film soundtrack, and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for one week in August 1995. It also went to number four on the UK Singles Chart, where it had originally reached number 20 in 1994. It also was nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Song from a Movie in 1996.
    Seal talked about the long, strange journey that the song went through on The Brian McKnight Show season finale that aired 30 May 2010. He described how the song initially dropped out of the charts shortly after its release. Joel Schumacher subsequently called Seal, and requested use of the song to play over a love scene between the characters played by Nicole Kidman and Val Kilmer in Batman Forever.
    Two versions of the music video were produced:
    The original version is set in a photographic studio and was co-directed by Matthew Rolston and William Levin. The 1966 film Blowup was heavily referenced in the video.
    The second version was directed by Joel Schumacher and has Seal performing the song beside the Bat-Signal, interspersed with clips from the film Batman Forever. This is the more well known video of the song. The director of photography of this version of the music video was Neil Abramson.

    I like the construction of the music, the tonics, the dorics, and the use of Medieval time signatures. It is so unusual because he just did what came from his head and did not let music "tastemakers" get their hands on it. Seal wrote it himself. He was given some kind of electronic mixer and started to play with it. Since he did not know a lot of the technicalities of music (including what notes should NOT be placed next to each other, he went and wrote this song which included notes that are never used together for some reason that only classical musicians know).

    • @nothingissacrosanct
      @nothingissacrosanct ปีที่แล้ว +1

      first of all, this is not a pop song, its an English Contemporary/R&B song. Second, just because you find yourself enjoying modern pop music less does not mean that it is objectively of lower quality than older pop music. The myth that modern pop music can be proven categorically to be worse than old pop music needs to cease its perpetuation, because it is far from the truth. Music tastes mature and evolve, but tend to reach their natural apex around the ages of 18-24 -- where an enormous amount of cognitive development takes place, and where the development of a person's identity tends to slow or cease altogether. You finding that modern music does not satisfy your anomalously high standards is not indicative of a degeneration of the quality of music, but a stagnation in the development and openness of your tastes. This fact eludes a terrifyingly large number of people, and makes me wonder just how a person can operate with such a weak grasp on reason and critical thinking, and with such an abhorrence for empiricism and objectivity. Stop maligning modern music as "bad" simply because youre too artistically conservative to appreciate modern art. Its YOU who has the problem, not modern art.

    • @archerseo
      @archerseo ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@nothingissacrosanct that’s good insight. I appreciate your passion and critical thinking. I can take criticism when it’s constructive, yet for you to essentially say I have no ability to reason or use critical thinking is a deep misjudgement. You have no idea who I am and to make an assumption like that is absurd. Everyone can like or dislike whatever music they want. Each generation thinks newer music isn’t very great. I like plenty of old and new artists. I began performing and playing instruments at the age of seven and have had a wide variety of music that I have listened too. It’s not all “bad”. But a lot of it is written with the idea of making a song that will make the most amount of money and not something written from the heart. Newer songs are written by like fifteen people, whilst some older songs were usually written by one or two people.
      Art that is made by committee usually has a poor track record for having a long lasting effect and standing the rest of time. All I am saying is that there is less quality pop music which is easily accessible to the public via the charts and what’s popular. There is still great music being made and great new music too, you just have to simply look harder for it and that the average music fan really won’t do that. So as far as the charts I think there has been a decline in instrumental excellence and meaningful lyrics. “Baby” by Justin Bieber was written by like ten people, I don’t know the exact number but it’s high. Bohemian Rhapsody was written by one person.
      Freddie Mercury. The landscape of music has also changed drastically. One of my life long friends was the guitarist for Nine Inch Nails for a few years and co wrote some songs with Trent Reznor. It’s far more difficult for artists to make a living now than it was years ago with the introduction of 360 Record deals. So, Record companies are similar to film production companies. They don’t take the same type of risks they use too. So really the smaller artists and smaller independent films suffer some what because the business portion of it has somewhat flattened the creative portion of it.
      I respect your opinion. Yet I would hope you could be more pleasant with other people you comment too in the future. Best of luck to you.
      Cheers.

      @@archerseo I totally agree with you, and for what it's worth - as I wonder where does one find "empiricism and objectivity" in these matters - musicologists and music producing professionals (like Rick Beato that you've mentioned) believe that too. But maybe their tastes and personalities are also underdeveloped. 😏 Anyway, especially in Pop music, and all big 'pop-ular' genres, there just seems to have been a steep decline in quality. From all aspects, mainly originality and creativity.
      Actually this person's take - putting aside their rudeness, arrogance, pompous self-importance and asinine psychological theories - seems to be the pretentious, tired post-modern take, that you categorically can't judge art. Of course you can, it's just deeply nuanced and subjective, also what you can do with your takes and opinions is limited. It will always be first about personal tastes, and also exposure. But you can have enlightening debates about it, just not with everyone. As some people don't know how - they don't seem to be 'critically and reasonably' aware that any serious debate starts with respect, just know how to throw shade to feel superior for several moments.
      Sorry/not sorry, my blunt take is that to deny the obvious decline in Pop music in the last two decades or so, makes one seem ignorant and/or dishonest and/or just deaf. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Many people say something like that just to not seem too old.

    I heard a live acoustic performance by Seal on SiriusXM about a year ago, and all these years later, he sounds just like he did on this track live as he did on anything he recorded in a studio. What a voice.

    Such an underrated artist. Every cut on this album is a masterpiece. You must listen to the entire album.

    I recently discovered this song and I’m obsessed. The instruments remind me of the Renaissance folk music for some reason. But his voice is so dynamic and you feel every word.

    His voice is so unique that I instantly recognized him on The Masked Singer.

      I know, I think it took me literally 3 seconds to figure out. I was shocked when people were guessing the wrong answers online. Like, who doesn't know that voice, lol!

    Great pick guys! Such a lush, complex and brilliant melody topped with supremely harmonic vocals, no auto tune. Just a talented singer and a gifted songwriter. So good!🔥🤙

    This song was produced by Trevor Horn, who was called “the man who invented the eighties”. He was a member of the band “the buggles “ who sang Video Killed the Radio Star. He also produced such bands as ABC and Frankie Goes to Hollywood among others. A pioneer of that synthesizer sound of the 80’s that you guys love so much

    He started appearing on the club scene in the 90´s when he was featured on Adamski´s 'Killer' , after that his solo career really took off with 'Crazy'

    Seal did an album of standards (Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc.) It is heavenly.

    I'm a little late with my comment but please understand that Seal is in no way Mr. Heidi Klum. He is a talent unto himself and should be an example to new artists as to how smooth, crisp, and broad ranging voices should sound. Great reaction guys and please take the advice of so many of the other people who posted music by Seal you should listen to - you won't be disappointed.

    Kiss From a Rose is one of the best pop songs ever written, period. It's gorgeous. And he's been gifted with one of those voices that can make any song sound magical

    He was a coach on The Voice Australia. He won the very first season with an incredible artist named Karise Eden. You should most definitely include her blind audition on Female Friday! It was the quickest 4 chair turn I've ever seen!!
