    Welcome! Here I am going away for the weekend with my family AND my brother in-law and his family for a weekend away camping (glamping!).
    He normally lives in London and drives a Volkswagen Tiguan petrol R-Line which is a great practical family car. So let’s see what he thinks living with a Tesla Model Y Long Range for a few days. This is his first time driving an EV and I’m not going to tell him anything about it.
    Is it practical enough? Does the family like it? How is it for charging?
    Well here we’ll find out!
    Thanks for watching!

    Brilliant reportage on everyday family use of a Y and 3. I recently moved from 3 to Y and agree it’s a very practical car for swallowing kids, kit and caboodle. I like having my children in one of the safest vehicles ever tested, it’s most reassuring.👍

      I swapped last week out of a G05 X5 40d into the Model Y and have zero regrets if that helps you at all. The X5 was quick for a full-size SUV, but the Model Y makes it feel slow. I’d also consider the Model Y closer in size to the 3 touring as well, it’s not really an SUV in my eyes but I quite like that. It still swallows all of our family paraphernalia as well given the packing advantages of the EV platform. There are things I miss about the X5 (overall refinement and cabin quality) but that’s not to say the Y is bad in any way. Do it mate, you won’t regret it I don’t think.

    coming from an M3P I'd agree the MY ride quality over bumps is something I'd strongly recommend people experience before purchasing. The Y is noticeably harder over the bumps on the same size wheels and tyre pressures as the M3P. It may be something you can live with, although it's a shame Tesla couldn't soften it a little whilst maintaining the body control.

    I think that was an excellent video. I think there are many folks who have never test driven a Tesla but think they "know" that the Tesla Y has a harsh ride and that it "needs" a display behind the steering wheel based on comments they've read or seen in videos. I find the ride to be about the same as my 2018 Lexus RX450h and I find no significant difference between glancing straight down at a speedometer vs glancing slightly to the side at the touchscreen. Just a bit of criticism of this video which is only intended to be helpful because your videos are among my favorites. We must have crossed paths a few times 😁 We charged at Exeter superchargers (20 mins.), where you stopped for a toilet break, on the way down, topped up with the nanny cable from our digs during the week (gave the owner £20 for the leccy). On the return journey we charged at Bristol, Gordano (30 mins.) Total cost £60 vs est. £165 in our diesel Audi. Used autopilot most of the motorway journey there and back. What a dream! To be honest, back in 2019 when I was looking to buy my first EV I placed a pre-order on the ID3 First Edition. However when the price was announced there was less than £2,000 between the ID3 and a Model 3 SR+ AND the Model 3 was the same price as a well spec'd VW Tiguan. The base price of the Tiguan soon ramps up when you spec it to have the same equipment as the Model 3 has as standard.
      However, I do get your point that the base Model Y is more expensive than the Tiguan. I'm just pointing out in some cases it's not unrealistic to compare a Tesla and a Tiguan.

    Regarding the CarPlay mentioned at the end - I have MY on order, but I will miss CarPlay a bit. I use Apple Music where I have my library as well as various playlists and I don't want to maintain in two different streaming services (plus Spotify doesn't support having your own music imported into the library as far as I know), additionally, I'm using Books to listen to AudioBooks, so that will be missed as well. But what is more important is I'll be missing having Waze on my main screen; as good as the Tesla nav can be, in my local environment it doesn't beat Waze on my commute for more reasons. Sure, I can have it on my phone, but that's not the point here.

    • @LaJuanHughes
      @LaJuanHughes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a question what does waze do better than the Tesla maps. Beside the speed traps. Also with music I stream any I want from my phone and on the Tesla screen it shows me what songs are coming up from my playlist. I am just try to understand why every one wants car play or android auto. It seems like a lot of car manufacturers use those systems because they don't want to invest in their system and let the phone do it .

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LaJuanHughes I want to be clear that I'm refering to Waze in my area/country, where it has great support from the local community. That means e.g. almost perfect road closures in the map (but I believe Google Maps takes those from Waze as well), the best statistics and real time data on road that will send me through side streets more often than GMaps/Apple Maps, potholes warnings and those speed traps as well as cops (ironically, those are not that important to me in this context).
      For music there is one objective advantage and that is that wired carplay has better sound quality than BT (but to be honest, it's questionable whether you can tell in a car with a ton of other noises). If I have as good access to the entire Apple Music and Books in Tesla as it is in CarPlay, I don't care about this almost at all, but I have my doubts about that (does Tesla support any library of any app that is CarPlay enabled?)

    Interesting seeing the views of someone who had no experience of EVs.
    The efficiency of both of them was pretty woeful wasn't it? I thought you would be in the 4/kWh on a longish run like that.

    • @RSEV
      @RSEV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well yeah 4/kWh quite possible on both but there’s a little of hills through Dorset and Devon and we certainly weren’t trying for efficiency. Plus loaded cars of course

    • @FFVoyager
      @FFVoyager 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RSEV fair point - but for every hill you go up, you also have to come down. 🤔
      (My classic Ioniq 28 got 17.1 mi/kWh going downhill - also in Devon - recently. Only 3.5 mi/kWh going uphill earlier in the day!)

    Ideally You need a luggage cover in London, Too many of my friends have had their rear window smashed in London by thieves. So perhaps the model 3 would be better for him.

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or, you need a car that is apparently empty, with all items under the false floor, that thieves will glance in a d move on.
      The smart ones (contradiction?) Will know they're on camera anyway so tend to avoid the Tesla.

      The Model Y has tinted windows so not that easy to see what's in the boot especially at night.

      Yep, kids are pretty smart about these things.
      This is an interesting case, notice how they don't say "the car talked" but specifically "the Tesla talked" here:
      th-cam.com/video/EZ3cwuDlj_s/w-d-xo.html
      That can tell you allot about future trends as these kids grow to become consumers - or even their influence today on curious parents.

    Comparing model 3 and Y is all well and good but the base Model Y is SO much more expensive than the base model 3 its not entirely fair. I wanted a model Y and when I saw the launch price in the UK I just said FU Tesla and bought a diesel BMW..
