Hey everyone, if you like this video, please check out Robot Co-Op's! He was the originator of the "RECKLESS" joke, not me, and he dives into the story pretty thoroughly with a sharp sense of humor. His work was obviously inspiring to me, so I know a lot of you would like it too. Thank you.

Thank you for continuing to engage with this video over the past year or so. With the nearby release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, I just want to make it clear that my piece here is exclusively about "Remake" itself. The entire script was focused on what this entry means to me, regardless of what the outcome is of the overall trilogy. The entire point of making the video was that there's a lot of nuance to this whole debacle and that it's okay to express it without waiting another decade for this to finally end. The video is two hours specifically because I wanted to demonstrate that this is not a simple matter of, "it sucks lol." Art's not just about "Good and Bad." I acknowledge many times in the video that this game obviously has a ton of heart and talent put in, but that I'm disappointed because of some very crucial decisions pertaining to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
So, I kindly request that you do not use the hindsight of Rebirth onward against me when I was careful to only make conclusive statements about the present and not the future. There's no "gotcha" to be had because (spoiler for those who haven't finished) my stance was that it ultimately doesn't matter. The sequels cannot reverse my fundamental issues with the project's inception, and I don't intend to be a party pooper with that in mind. It'll be a great time for the overwhelming majority and I have no reason to be spiteful towards anyone for enjoying the upcoming game(s.) So if I'm not going after you... please do not go after me. Thank you.

When I think of the remake of FF7, bastardized is the word that comes to mind. How Square Enix can get away with making a lower in quality of the original and adding new characters that no one wanted. Then we have the cheek of the newer Final Fantasy fans claiming turn based was dropped because of new hardware and this is what the original FF7 should look like and so on. I enjoyed the video, I'm pleased I came across this channel as I feel there's not many of us around anymore.

What I realized when I came back to finish the ff7 remake (cause I stopped because it became a chore) was I love this style of FF gameplay, the blend of action and turn-based is really good with this one, I also hate that they had to break it up into MULTIPLE parts I mean shit isn't part 2 good enough to end it you're telling me there might be a part 3?? Come on square...but I'll still buy it and play it I really just hope it doesn't have extremely dull parts that are a chore to get through, I was pulling my teeth at certain points in the last couple chapters cause it was so boring, the ending though...was high octane action and even though I can see why people complain about it I thought it was a badass way to end part 1 after that awful Hojos basement mundane switched between two parties bs 🫠

I feel like a lot of games exaggerate the "grave" side of Cloud, and make him look bored and insecure all the time.
He was much more chill and mischievous in FF7 than a lot of people seem to think, and it is almost only during the bombing missions that he actually has that grave and serious attitude.
He lightens up a lot after that, and jokes around in various ways.

The dialogue and clouds portrayal is my biggest issue. I just fucken hate this dude. Such a cunt to everyone, and for no reason. (English dub btw) and I CANNOT stand the random grunting anime noises from the characters in place of actual dialogue. @@hollyshock8400 I think the creators said he's supposed to be awkward and anti-social though. He failed to become SOLDIER and was always shy. Even the flashback where Tifa got mad at him for ignoring her never happened, she actually didn't notice him when they were children in that scene.

    • @zeiva
      @zeiva ปีที่แล้ว +84

@@eveningrice That version of Cloud is supposed to be after the reveal. For the majority of the game, Cloud is supposed to be emulating Zack's personality. If he is already brooding right from the start, then it doesn't make any sense why Aeris even think Cloud resembles Zack. Even then, once Cloud accepts his past, he doesn't go back to being anti-social. He is still awkward, but accepts that he has friends that will help him. That is his character development. Whatever version of Cloud Square Enix dished out after the original has little resemblance to the original.

@@zeiva always processed Cloud becoming casual and less fake after he remembered himself. He was bummed in Advent Children due to the state of the world and an ongoing identity crisis, but he got over that in the movie. In his last canon appearance, in Dirge of Cerberus, the man cracks wise when he shows up and even kinda grins.
They threw all that out to make him a generic anime sad boy. Pitiful.

I've noticed that western and Eastern devs tend to have opposing strengths and weaknesses. Western devs reject or fear originality and innovation, but are good at iteration and refining what's proven to work. Meanwhile eastern devs are much more creative and original, but are slow to embrace objectively beneficial design trends and obsessed with reinventing the wheel no matter how unnecessary it is and no matter how destructive it is to the finished product.

    • @crystalwater505
      @crystalwater505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +225

He just stated an all too common mentality between devs from the West and the East and he is right on that. The West strengthen long standing foundations while the East put new ideas and concepts into practice regardless of the overall reception of it.
If we were to get down to that topic, it's not just limited into games. You can see it from architecture to culture on how the West and the East have very differering concepts of various things.

There's some truth to this but the opposite can be said of both as well. At the end of the day, they both make video games for the sake of profit. If Nintendo thinks Star Fox or Paper Mario will sell better as an adventure game, they'll do it. If Activision/EA thinks Call of Duty/Madden will sell better by staying safe and making minimal changes, they’ll do it. If Square thinks FFVIIR and even FF16 will sell better as a western style action game, they'll do it. They all try different kinds of things and sugarcoat it in different ways but its done for the sake of profit. Of course, you'll always have your outliers from both. Your passion projects like the Xenoblades, God of Wars, Doom Eternals, Elden Rings, Zeldas, etc.

And yet it used to be the opposite, in the 1700s and 1800s the West was the source of Enlightenment thought, eclectic art styles inspired by other cultures, new econonic philosophies and the Industrial Revolution, all of which were anti-conventional and anti-traditional phenomena. Meanwhile, East Asia did things like they had done for hundreds or thousands of years. Most of the great and revolutionary works of art, literature and composed music from this era came from Europe.

Aerith in front of the Highwind is obviously the first time you go to Junon, they all follow up after Cloud after he goes up using the dolphin. This artwork is no different than any other. FF7 is technically a single-disk game; each of its disks has the entirety of its game stamped onto it (which allowed you to actually hot-swap the disks with minimal disruption to the game, which was very useful if you happened to have a scratched or dirty disk). The reason it had to be broken into multiple disks is entirely the fault of the cutscenes.

Something that I felt was SUPER important in the original is that the original had one of THE most unique methods of storytelling via gameplay I've ever seen. When you play the flashback arc where Cloud is on his first mission with Sephiroth, and you control both of them as you go through the town, the disparity in power level is stunning. It's told through the numbers, and I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it since. When Sephiroth attacks, his worst hits are going to do 2000-3000 if not WAY more, and Cloud's do like 15-40 (iirc), and Cloud routinely gets KO'd in battle. Sephiroth is shown to have a power level so far ahead of anything we've seen so far that you FEEL just how strong he his. It's very clever and says a lot without literally saying anything at all.

The problem with Aerith potentially not dying in this version (and who knows? Maybe it's a bait and switch,) is that FFVII was *conceived* around Sakaguchi's mother's death and how he himself was coping with it. Aerith is a stand in for his mother and Aerith saves the day at the end through the lifestream which symbolizes how those who are gone still have very real effects on us in life... This is true of Zack's character too. FFVII is fundamentally about loss and FFVII remake is throwing that all away it seems. It's replacing the *core.*

However, Sauron has knowledge of how the original story ends, and so he appears to Frodo as an apparition at several points, beginning at Bilbo's party. He arrives personally to fight the hobbits at the Brandywine Bridge. The Hobbits fight the fate ghosts because they don't want the original ending where they won... because Boromir died. They want FREEDOM.

Given how popular this game is (FF7R), you are probably going to get a lot of crap spewed your way for what you express in this video. But it's an important video to make given how far the story of this game strays from the source material.
I was fine with updates to the presentation and gameplay, but when they changed the story into a "Actually it's kind of a sequel, sort of" they lost me.
And to anyone who says "You just wanted a 1 for 1 Remaster with no story changes"... Well, yeah. That's exactly what was advertised and what most people thought it would be when it was revealed.
Do you really think that when they officially announced the game at E3 that the crowd was going crazy for the possibility that it could be a sequel or alternate timeline of FF7? Especially after how the Compilation was received in general? No, everyone was hoping for a graphically updated and modernized version of the same classic story. If you're happy how FF7R turned out that's fine. But don't act like those who expected an accurate retelling of the original are foolish for being disappointed.

There's one thing I really despise in this game over all the other bullshit. It doesn't get the Cloud vs. Sephiroth conflict. Sephiroth doesn't give a shit about Cloud (at least in FF7). This whole "we are eternally connected. I am your darkness. Our battle is destiny" shtick is something Nomura misinterpreted or shoehorned in cuz' he thinks it's cool. In FF7, Sephiroth just wants the Black Materia. That's it. Once he gets it in disc 2, he leaves the party alone until the final battle. All along, Sephiroth was only using Cloud because he had Jenova cells that could be manipulated. For all we know, Sephiroth pulled the mind-screwing bit on all the clones. Cloud just happened to be the puppet that got the materia for him.
This game is not a remake. Like you said in the end, it's a sequel. The events of FF7 have already happened in this game's narrative. This kills the whole theme of how loss shapes a person's identity and replaces it with a generic "we will fight fate and make our own future" message. Holy Shit Materia, this game sucks...

Like I said, once Sephiroth got what he wanted, he doesn't interact with the party until they come bashing in his front door for the final fight (even when Cloud and Tifa were spending some time alone by said door). He used Cloud because he was useful, not because they were destined to do battle eternally. Sephiroth doesn't care. That's what the shitty argument is.

He could have had someone else get him the Black Materia, but he chose Cloud, out of everyone else that had JENOVA cells. Why? I think he has resentment for Cloud, because Cloud defeated him back in Nibelheim. The great Sephiroth, defeated by some lowly grunt. He broke Cloud mentally and spiritually, killed Aerith right in front of him, etc. Sephiroth put in a LOT of work to make sure Cloud broke. That's what makes me think it was all intentional.

After finishing 7 Remake, I remember feeling really empty, or at least angry at it because of how the story felt like it was written in spite. But then I kept seeing and hearing positive things about it and I started wondering if I was just wrong about it. I eventually gaslit myself into liking it a bunch, but there was always that lingering feeling in the back of my mind.
I just finished Rebirth the other night, and hoo boy did it bring back those feelings of anger and frustration at the story that I won't expound on yet for spoiler reasons. It's such a shame too because everything else is phenomenal, minus the actual plot and the toooons of padding.

I played the remake when it came out and was disappointed with the final plot. I didn't play the og, so, I didn't understand what was going on. Overall, the game has its flaws, but I still loved a lot of it's details and characters. But that final just ruined everything. I just didn't understand why I was fighting Sephiroth, why this was important and why Aerith was being so weird all of sudden. Who is Zack? Why they left? Naturally, I had to search the og plot and the theories.
The point is, being a remake, a sequel or even trying to do new stuff isn't even the bad part about this game. It's the WRITING, the pacing and the narrative. The game tries too much to be cool and misterious about this new course, and fails to empathize the player with the final plot. They could have done the same story, but if it was truly intentional and clear since the beginning, showing us what Aerith knows and thus making the game be about her (and Sephiroth's) attempt to change the future, fine! Great! Just make a good writing about it. Make a good story.
So, the problem does not rely on the changes they made, but on the executives trying to make this game a remake and a sequel at the same time, and failing on both.

Reading your comment confirmed one of my big story gripes.
I grew up with the original and, beside my personal disappointment in the direction they chose to go, I wondered how the story would even land with newcomers since a lot of the new plot points lose most of their weight if you don't already know what happened in the original. It seems like the writers are kind of exploiting the original story and it's legacy to subvert expectations but not considering that it doesn't necessarily make a ton of sense at face value how they went about it.
Either way, to your point, they missed the mark story wise with probably most of fans of the original by trying to create a completely new story experience and then didn't manage to make that experience fully enjoyable for newcomers either because the story relies so heavily on gamers having played or at least watched the original story which shouldn't be a requirement for a "remake."

The final fantasy characters in Kingdom hearts are used for fan service fights that's it. remember cloud said he does not give a care about Xemnas or Ansem and Xehanort in KH2 this only exemplifies on why final fantasy characters are used for fan service fight affairs since the world building of Kingdom hearts franchise now is only about the keyblade mythos this keyblade mythos does not resolve around the final fantasy characters at all. Does cloud strife in kingdom hearts have a Keyblade wielding ancestor in kingdom hearts "no he does not" so cloud is not important to the lore or plot of kingdom hearts. Call me when cloud, Tifa,Sephiroth, and Aerith get to beat Ansem's heartless,Xemnas and Xehanort when they appeared in all those kingdom hearts games since the final fantasy characters lack a keyblade to be a main hero they will continue to be side lined as fan service fights and this is done on purpose to focus on sora and his friends or other Keyblade wielders.

To add to how Sephiroth is shown at the beginning of the remake... If they had done it in a more subtle way rather than out right put Sephiroth there! Cloud was hearing voices in his head in the original game and the remake did put in mako "addiction". If they took those two concepts and made it a bit more mysterious I think it would have been better, like the voice of the Jenova Cells in Cloud messing with his head mixed in with maybe Zack or maybe his own monologue, I think that would be pretty effective in building some intrigue as well as mystery for new players while giving a subtle wink to the older ones. Like you mentioned in the video Sephiroth was only slightly hinted at the beginning and shown in Cloud's retelling of "his" time in Nibelhiem. The first time the group encounters the image of Sephiroth is actually on the Shinra boat before the Jenova Birth fight and even then Sephiroth is a bit cryptic bringing in more questions than answers. I felt motivated as a player waaaaaaaaaaay back to chase after Sephiroth at that point to learn what the heck was going on. Putting him right at the beginning is comparable to like a poorly done horror movie.... horror movies need suspense, sounds, atmosphere, and camera angles, sometimes you might not even see the creature or murderer or whatever till much later, if they reveal the big bad right at the start well might as well spoil the whole experience! If they had left Sephiroth out along with that burning Nibelhiem scene ... I think the remake part 2's trailer would have been far more impactful maybe. I am curious as to how they are going to do the world map and how far they are going to take the second part? I dread that the second part will only be Cloud's retelling...

I think my biggest problem with this game isn’t that it’s not a one-to-one remake (I actually like the concept of adding and expanding the story and world of VII), but rather that they didn’t make the additions feel organic.
Every new thing they added (save Chapter 4, which was an addition I actually enjoyed) was tied back into the Sephiroth/Whisper plot line, and I just don’t like that. I get what they were trying to say with the Whispers (feeling constrained by the original and wanting to break free and make additions to the story without getting hate for it from purists), and in any other plot I’d actually kinda dig it, but it just doesn’t work in VII.
I wish they just made additions to the story without “justifying” it through fate and destiny bs. I’d be way more down with this game being Midgar only if they got rid of the Whisper stuff entirely, shortened up some of the chapters (and merged some together for pacing purposes), and made the side quests better.

    • @Koniving
      @Koniving 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I'd argue that it does work with FF7 in a way that doesn't work with other titles. I would see it less as "fate" or "Destiny", and more for what it really is beyond their terms... The planet has a defense against many forms of attack, including against irresponsible use of its own systems. For example, prematurely trying to end all life on the planet using one system the planet uses for resurrection (in which a planet in danger solar/spatial danger kills and collects all of the lifestream, then uses Omega to launch it to a new rock to reincarnate) causes the embodiment of its will, the Goddess, to launch Jade Weapon to stop it before it fully activates. When the Turks kill that system, Jade Weapon changes its target to the 'greater threat', the Turks (now in Exile). (Said turks destroy Jade Weapon December 12th at the town of Icicle Inn, the day of the reactor 1 bombing mission in Midgar).
The theme from advent-children onward, is to plaster hexagons which arranged as they are scientifically symbolize DNA and Genetic Memory. It's everywhere, from the concept art to the main menu in remake. Curiously, Crisis Core also has it but chooses interesting times to display it.
In Before Crisis, the element of planetary ressurection is destroyed, and particles of light fall from the sky. In Dirge of Cerberus, during the game Reeve describes the ending to FF7 remake including the whispers surrounding the Shinra building, stating it happened every single night after the Meteor fell. (He also specifically only describes it as a sound that everyone can hear). So the weren't Whispers 'activated' until then. Also, a thousand+ people disappeared from Junon. These people were all survivors displaced from Sector 7; they were found again in a no longer 'as crushed' sector 7 -- where Deep Ground soldiers gathered them up and harvested them. In the original FF7, Sector 7 fell mostly flat and crushed everything. In Remake, Sector 7 fell at different angles and split mid-air, remarkably NOT crushing 7th Heaven, Wedge's house, Stargazer Heights, Beginner's Hall, etc. They're shown in remake's ending and during the save Wedge tidbit. So Dirge is showing us what happens as the changes in Remake are unfolding in real time, from the perspective of normal people that can't see the changes. But if you pay attention, you can tell when Remake happened.
Also, like Before Crisis, after Omega is defeated there's a particle of light shower in Dirge. And in Remake, there's a particle of light shower when the Arbiter is defeated.
Now, consider what the whispers are. They are "the Cries of the planet" as defined by Aerith, and they are a defense against alterations in the planet's memory. The lifestream as defined by Hojo in Dirge and by Aerith "Lifestream White", has no concept of time. One who still holds a will can go backward in the lifestream as if exploring memories; and one can 'nudge' these memories. Altering them, effectively, alters the real world. The planet's defense against doing this are the whispers. However, the whispers are not really trying to preserve what actually happens, but a specific chain of events. The whispers, the Arbiter, are fighting to protect Jenova's timeline more than anything. Imprisoned in the Arbiter's chest is Sephiroth, while Jenova-only visions of Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo fight to defend the timeline is something Jenova would do; and is doing without the help of Sephiroth as Sephiroth is trying to break free.
But... One must remember, in Before Crisis the ability to cull life to is lost. In Dirge, the ability to send collected life to another planet is lost. In Advent Children, the lifestream is coagulated and choked with negative lifestream, tainting it. These are goals that would lead to destroying the planet, not using it as a vessel. These are not Sephiroth's goals, these are the goals of an alien entity meant to colonize and bestow life from dying planet onto a new rock. The planet is under attack by Jenova, by a foreign planet that has died.
Sephiroth's goals do not align with what ultimately happened. It's time to change what will be, it is time to "Remake" the future.
Now tell me how it doesn't work?

Later in the game barrett is confronted about the extreme measures he takes and barrett acknowledges that he has blood on his hands, but feels he is doing the only thing he can to save the planet. Making it shinra's fault robs barrett of some of his character growth.

The remake is great when it’s touching up the beats of the original. When it does it’s own thing is where it falls flat. My absolute favorite part of the game is when you climb up the Sector 7 pillar. They took a short 5 minute tops climb around the spiral staircase with a few random encounters thrown in and turned it into 20 minute long epic struggle to the top, with the Turks following you in a helicopter, shooting at you the entire time, and mocking you. Absolutely phenomenal. If the game did more stuff like that and less stuff like padding with side quests, bringing in story content too early, and shoving in badly written Nomura OCs, it would’ve been a lot better.

I feel you, when it comes to the filler. FFVIIR did not need to be as long as it was, and some chapters simply were not necessary. That said, it has some of the highest high points I've played and seen in modern triple-A games. I'm always revisiting them either through individual chapter play sessions, or online videos to have on while I work. I really love this game a lot, and I'm sorry the admittedly clumsy new story stuff did so much damage to it, for you. Tease him like that why exactly? It's not like we don't know he'll play a part in the story, or how he looks.
In the OG FF7 the teasing and big reveal worked because no one knew him, no one. Meanwhile by 2020 he was among the most famous videogame villains of all time, so teasing wouldn't work because everyone knows him.
Also, the game is a REMAKE, not a REMASTER. Remasters are the ones that take the story 1:1 and upgrade everything for the new console gen.

Sephiroth is pretty much one of the big signs that shows the huge flaw with this game. Like how many new and young players knw sephiroth, like actually know him from the original game and not just from smash r kingdom hearts? He is nothing but a cameo here. Take spiderman ps4. Eveyone knows Doc Ock and yet the game built him up. Cause this is how story telling works. We still cared about his character, we had sympathy hope and it was crushing when he sadly became the villain we know and feared. We seen it many time before and yet the game managed to retell his story in a way that we still cared and enjoyed... sephiroth... is just there cause he is evil cloud or something, who knows, who cares, give us money.
And honestly what kinda disgusts me a little more, how square managed to gas light so many people into believing that this remake was what they where always asking for. No it was not. No one asked for a shitty ass fan fiction that does not respect the wishes of the original fans and is also no proper introduction for new comers.

What I just cannot wrap my head around involving discussions of this game is how all of the different ways that the Remake paints the OG as a "restriction" or "failure" or something to be defeated, and even the Whispers potentially representing the fans of the OG, are all extremely passive-aggressive and insulting jabs at the fans of the OG, but the minute those OG fans criticize the Remake about that or even anything else, oh, now all of a sudden people are complaining about "hate". Yeah OK, whatever. Guess the "hate" doesn't matter if it's coming from a multi-billion dollar corporation?
Also there is nothing wrong with wanting a beat-for-beat remake of a video game with updated graphics and some added little tidbits to better flesh out some things like cut content. Nothing! Why is that seen as a forbidden taboo? There is no harm in fleshing out older video games with updated aspects as long as your not trying to ruin or get rid of the original. People are probably worried about it becoming like the recent trend of stale and forgettable remakes, but Final Fantasy VII is a very special case in regards to remakes. It came out during the perfect time to not have very polished polygonal graphics, and a battle system that was standard for JRPGs of the time, but it was still advanced enough to be considered a top dog in gaming at the time. Remaking it so that the OG fans are happy and new fans can still have fun with it in a newer style seems so simple to me, and it's not like Square Enix doesn't have the money to do that.
Edit: For the record I never really felt like I needed this game to be remade at all imo. I know that's pretty subjective but I love the OG game as it is.

@@NewSorpigal1 Yea, I hear ya. I mean look at the Live-A-Live remake, too. No one complained about that, old fans loved it, the remake re-vamped the graphics in a style that suits the original vision, added in really high-quality voice acting, and added a new secret final boss that actually adds more to the story and character arc of one of the characters. It is an exceptional example of a remake done right. Or even SaGa Frontier remastered, where they re-added a previously cut scenario. Stuff like that, I'm positive, is all Final Fantasy VII fans wanted from the remake, and maybe we'll get that with Ever Crisis at least, but then again I recently learned Ever Crisis is going to have freaking loot boxes. I really do hate the modern gaming industry. This is why I tend to stick to retro games.

It took me 2 years plus after release, when Steam version is finally out for me to play this game. I played the original FF7 three times over the years. First in 2010, then next in 2015 or so, then finally recently again earlier this year in 2022. I played the Steam version of FF7R with Japanese audio and Chinese text (I thought this would be better as the Chinese text is translated directly from the Japanese audio, whereas the English text would follow the English localised script instead).
The sins of FF7R to remove in order for it to be acceptable to me:
    - Stupid time travel, multiverse ending
    - Barret getting stabbed by Sephiroth and then getting revived just for kicks
    - Every appearance of whispers
Flaws of FF7R which I would like to change but can tolerate:
    - Random appearances of Sephiroth and clones (I can just head canon them as hallucinations as Cloud has always been weirding out like than in the original anyway)
    - Weird jump from rescuing Aerith to suddenly waking up in the room with everyone else with no explanation
    - Trim down unnecessarily long train graveyard sequence, remove mandatory return to the sewers to expand on the backstory of some trivial character, trim down unnecessarily large Hojo's lab portion (fine I get it we need to pad out the game to justify the cost to gamers these days, I prefer a trimmed experience but I can tolerate the padding if that were all)
    - Avalanche members surviving the plate collapse
    Things about FF7R I loved:
    - For the most part characters brought to life very vividly and close to the original concept (other than Sephiroth and parts they talk about fate/destiny and react to whispers)
    - Some very touching moments in the game (Marlene crying, Tifa crying, Barret raging)
    - Lots of great moments recreated like the opening sequence and many parts of 2 bombing runs, the 3v1 in Don Corneo's bedroom and the corny question he asks the trio after revealing Shinra's plans, the climb up the Shinra building stairs
    - Some amazing reimagined areas like the Sector 7 slums and 7th Heaven, Wall Market, Shinra upper floors and the guided tour
    - Expansion of Avalanche side characters particularly Jessie with Chapter 4 and seeing the middle class houses up on the plate
Things about FF7R I kind of liked:
    - Combat system is alright and sometimes satisfying, nice quality of life features like the improved Classic mode that lets you retain Normal difficulty and take over control anytime and auto assignment of weapon SP
    - Boss encounters are a little too frequent and drag a little too much but are a great spectacle and artistically very well designed (other than that garbage at the end of the highway in Chapter 18 of course)
    - VR/combat simulation, arena in wall market were nice additions
    - Kyrie is cute and reminds me of Yuffie with her antiques in trying to scam people of their money and trick them. See this is the kind of reference I like. New players would just think it's some other minor character, returning players would be reminded of Yuffie without actually having to introduce Yuffie at an inappropriate time and mess with the plot.
At this point I'm really conflicted. Clearly there are many things I love and adore about FF7R. Up until Chapter 16, despite all the flaws of the game, I was looking forward to play the game again multiple times. I'm currently learning Japanese and I thought to myself, yes this is peak modern AAA JRPG and these are the kinds of games I learn Japanese to experience. So happy, delighted, excited. Sure I was fatigued by the game by all the padding and filler and also forcing myself to do all the side quests, but I told to myself the second time round I will be able to skip the side quests and not spend time getting lost, experiencing just the core experience better. Then came Chapter 17, and things started to get weird, everything went downhill in Chapter 18, and I never got so disappointed in a game in my entire 25 years of playing video games. And in this manner. From delight to utter despair just when the game was about to end. I was so conflicted that after finishing the game at 2am I couldn't sleep for several hours just thinking what the hell I just experienced. Why? Why do this? What the hell?

47:50 Watching streamers rage against Hellhouse because they haven't grasped the absolute *basics* of combat up to this point is f*cking fun though lol.
How hard is it to Assess the enemy, restart the fight and then re-equip Aerith with one magic materia of each element?
It is apparently very hard XD 'people insist on solely using Cloud, button mashing square (with no regard to Hellhouse's physical resistance) AND get stuck in a never-ending healing spiral because they don't use ATB for offense.

I enjoyed watching guys like Max Dood play but his play style was beyond frustrating. Not taking advantage of the battle mechanics, like using focused moves on pressured enemies, or attacking weaknesses or other body parts if enemies or bosses had them. And I remember someone told him there’s people who have done no damage boss runs and his response was “yea after a billion tries”. No it’s knowing the battle mechanics and how to play. Aggressive play yields results but you can’t just mash the square button

it might sound stupid, but one of my all time favorite cutscenes of all FF games (I'm including XIV btw) is the the 8ish seconds of the train going up the Midgar pillar with Anxious Heart playing in the background. an actual cutscene on the PS1 was a very rare thing and the fact that SS chose that moment to be one was very telling. it sets the tone so perfectly, and it's that kind of thing that gave each installment in the series an actual feeling and ambience that would allow you to differentiate it from the others. even after travelling around the planet, I always kept that sequence in mind, because it such an excellent way to show you the world for what it actually is.
FFVIIR doesn't try to recreate that emotial bond, it just hopes the one you had to the actual game is still intact. I think new players would not completely understand why the original was so special if they only played the remake.

They should have advertised this "Remake" as a reimagining from the start. The ghosts and Midgar Sephiroth are just too large of a deviation. I've played it many times over, and knowing what happens in the story didn't affect my enjoyment of any subsequent playthroughs nor did it affect my excitement for getting a modern remake. There was a reason FFVII was as popular as it was compared to all the other JRPG's of the time. It had an easy to follow story with great pacing. It had a fantastic villain who was masterfully introduced. The majority of the main characters were well-rounded, relatable and their reasons/motivations for being in the story were clearly understood. The music was fantastic.

I'm in a unique position where I played the original Final Fantasy VII for the first time in 2020 sometime after the remake came out. I had bought it on my switch the year before when it was on sale, and wanted to play through the original story so that when I played remake, I could see how much it was expanded and brought to life. I went into the og FFVII knowing just two things. 1.) Aerith dies. 2.) Sephiroth was the final boss.
I didn't think we'd leave Midgar. I didn't know /when/ in the story Aerith died. Hell, I didn't even know Yuffie was a FF7 character, because I only knew her from KH1 and she always hung out with Squall, which just made me assume she was a character from VIII.
The whole time I played through the original, I could only imagine what the remake would do. How Avalanche's deaths would be more meaningful. How the f-ed up ps1 monsters would look so creepy as great ps4 models.
Then I played the remake. And... It was such a bad game. I didn't have fun playing it. The only reason I beat it is because there are a lot of people around me who try saying I don't get an opinion if I don't experience something for myself, else I would have put it down long before I hit that 40 hour gameplay mark that brought me to the end.
I knew exactly where there would be fights because the hallways would open up into large rooms. If it wasn't a room, there'd be no fight. This turned up true for every single open space I found. If there were no enemies in it naturally, then I just had to do the appropriate sidequest to get a bossfight there. Exploration was bad too. Every time I got to a new area, I wanted to wander around and take in the sights, then progress with the story. This game said no. I would get blocked and the camera would focus on my destination until I gave up and had to head there.
When I got the train station section, I turned around and started running backwards through the tracks as soon as I was able. The whole time, the characters were commenting things such as "I don't think this is the right way" or "Follow the dog" (because you were following that graffiti logo or whatever) I actually snarked out loud "Oh, if you don't want me to go this way, just block me off again!" I did not have fun, even when I ran right into an optional room with a chest in it. It didnt' feel like a reward- especially since I then had to run all the way back down the tracks to where I needed to go. It took me half an hour to run there and back, and I only did it because it felt like the first bit of freedom the game gave me. I could go off the path.
There were no clever puzzles, just frustration. That final dungeon, for example? I could not wrap my head around how the party was separated. Two of them (Tifa and Aerith I think) were where we had started before we were separated but couldn't get to us without us doing puzzles? Also Red wasn't playable, and that sucked.
I also read somewhere, after I beat the game, that those three shadows you fight before killing Fate were actually the echoes of Cloud, Tifa, and Barret from the og timeline that were fighting to keep in on track because ultimately, they won, even if there were losses. That ended up being faulty and it was the Sephiroth guys but just... It's so bad. I also didn't like how the party decided they were gonna kill fate right after one of those destiny ghosts save Barret's life. Yeah. Wow.
I also disagree with your points that the character's are themselves. (I mean minus Aerith you went over that really well.) They felt like they were flanderized versions of themselves. For this example, I'll use Cloud.
When I played the og FFVII, I got the sense that Cloud was a traumatized kid who cared deeply but hid it beneath edge. in the remake... He feels like a teen's first edgy oc. What really drove me to this is right before you go to Wall Market for the first time. Tifa is 'captured' but Cloud talks to her, she says she's fine, and he's just like 'Oh good I guess she's fine'. Aerith has to come in and tell him 'oh no you don't! She's in danger!!!' and convince Cloud to go after her. (Also, with how slow that carriage was moving, I don't believe for a second that we lost sight of it.) In the og, it's barreling through and Cloud insists he has to go save his friend and off they go.
Even in Wall Market. In the og, Cloud crossdresses because Aerith wants to be bait and he won't risk her like that. In the remake, she says she'll go in to be bait, and Cloud shrugs and says 'ok' and only ends up going in cause he just got swept up in it all, I guess.
There were a lot of story telling things that don't make sense either. Don Corneo tells them that the sector 7 plate is gonna fall. They get to the train graveyard. They doubt it'll fall but rush just in case because they have to do something. The ghosts turn on a train's radio that's somehow set to the frequency that Reno is using so they can hear that oh no, the sector 7 plate is gonna fall. who'd have thought it? This does not make them hurry any faster because they were already hurrying through.
The whole game felt disingenuous. I didn't have fun and it didn't feel like a final fantasy game.
Then there's stuff like Wutai is actively at war with Midgar, which I'm sure ties into the Yuffie DLC but I didn't play that, instead of it being a small little optional town tied to Yuffie's quest that had been beaten down and was now a tourist location.
I could rant a lot about what I don't like about this remake. Especially since I played it literally right after I beat the og FFVII for the very first time. But if I keep typing I'm just going to think of more and more stuff and this is long enough as it is.

I had a similar background to you, but a much different reaction. So far, I think the remake is overall better than the OG. The gameplay is way more fun, and the characters feel a lot more fleshed out. By the end of the original, I only really cared about Cloud and Aerith. The other characters felt either lacking or that they kind of regressed by the end (especially Tifa). Obviously these issues could still be present in the later parts, but so far the characters feel much, much better and more fleshed out. I also had no issues with the dungeons. Every moment I was just having fun. Maybe it doesn't help that I knew more about the original before playing it, and that it was hyped way too much, but it really doesn't live up to the hype like FFIX did. So far the remake feels more like what I expected from the original.

2: The Force Awakens has a Mary Sue protagonist alright, but Cloud's arc in this game wasn't perfect. Sephiroth showing up too early and Hojo directly spoiling plot revelations sorta weakens Cloud. Cloud's characterization is flawless and accurate.
3: The comparison between FF7R and TFA is pretty clear. Big IPS have done soft reboots and pseudo remakes before like Jurassic World, Evangellion, Code Geass, etc. FF7R isn't unique with this and it definitely doesn't redefine what a remake can be.

its so weird how the original game was far more subtle with its foreshadowing and plot points than the remake. Like we are given HINTS to Cloud's deal early on but they're VERY small and so vague and out of context we have no idea what they could possibly alude to until the big reveal. Meanwhile the game gives Cloud weird random headaches where he reacts in an over the top manner and things go woogy and fucking HOJO straght up gives the big reveal away before its even supposed to be revealed!
also about sephiroth: i agree this game really over uses him, where his prsence was more of a mystery and he was far more hands off most of the time until he became more of a focal figure. but not only that, the game follows the tradition of the cameos and spin offs of making cloud and sephiroth ALL ABOUT each other, where they're OBSESSED with each other and are such a legendary rivalry and such clear counterparts to each other....when that ISN'T the case.
Sure CLOUD's obsessed wih sephiroth due to the guy MURDERING HIS HOME and being the figure he saw as his IDEAL bfore that, but Sephiroth only sees cloud as a minor nuisance before the adventure really gets going, and even when that interest rises up its because sephiroth intends to use Cloud to empower himself. Sephiroth ISN'T obsessed with Cloud or making him suffer because for the majority of the game Cloud was just some random no-name shinra mook who stabbed him once.
Because the true rivalry was between sephiroth and AERITH. AERITH was the one Sephiroth was obsessed with, due to being a Cetra as he believed himself to be but also the key to thwarting his plans (hell even after death she is this). He is AERITH'S dark shadow made manifest, not CLOUD's. and yet the remake goes all in one once again continuing the false narrative that Sephiroth and Cloud are the most classic of classic antagonistic rivalries when its NOT the case.
Its so clear that they made this agme for people whoplayed the original game, missing the point that a remake is suppsoed to entice NEW players unfamiliar with the original story, so its gonna blindside them when the game references stuff from the lens of referencing the original as a seperate piece of work. I have seen people who have no intention of playing the original becaus the remake exists and so its gonan be shitty when they find out that they're missing out on actually experiencing the actual story of the original by focusing only on the remake.

I love Final Fantasy as a series, FF IX is my favorite of the PSX era. I always thought Square spent way too much focus on FF VII. It made me dislike seeing it. I just want NEW FF games. I like that each one is different and with a seemingly unrelated story. (Yes, I know they all are sort of and very loosly related). My biggest issue with the game was more of how much it played like a movie more so than a game. The original might've been like this too but it was so well paced that I don't think I minded it at the time, but man is this game so incredibly egregious with it's forced walking sections and overly drawn out dialogue and cutscenes that Hideo Kojima would tell them to tone it down a bit. Even then, I feel like I'm in the incredible minority when I say that heavy handed storytelling just doesn't do it for me in JRPGs, I would rather play one where it's storytelling style is more akin to Dark Souls or even the very first FF, where you're not there to be spoon-fed a plot, but just to simply exist in that setting.

My biggest problems with the game is that Square has no balls to kill anyone anymore. They remade THE game that though teenager me how to deal with loss and had balls to tell me that once something is gone, it is gone, but the life goes on and eventually it will get better without what you've lost and remade it in a way that even character who died in the past (Zack) is now brought back thanks to current events. The message is totally opposite now. If you've lost something, it will come back eventually. All you have to do is come across time traveling flower girl that vomits cryptic nonsense and let her shine some light on some dementors from Harry Potter, it will bring back people and things I've lost in the past.
Also, yeah, Sephiroth can't get enough of that sweet sweet spotlight. They made me roll my eyes every time I see one of my favourite villains. That takes talent.
Also also, has anyone else noticed how at the end of the game those ghosts do not show up until everything goes back to how it was originally? They didn't show up when events were altered, but the moment when the party escaped Midgar exactly as they did in the original, that's when the ghosts decided to intervene

Nope, never happened, everything gets a redo, I'm convinced Nomura is beyond eccentric, he's a hack, KH3 Story is a mess, FFXV was turned into a shell of what it could have been due to Nomura continuously changing aspects of what he wanted during development, but the FFXII Remake is by far the worst for me. Either way, as a player of the OG it was pretty clear to me at least part of Sephiroth’s plan is he wants to change shit so he can win, I didn’t need to read supplementary material to figure that out.

See also the KH 3 video, and Super Eyepatch Wolf's video on Final Fantasy 15. The guy was doing mass rewrites, scrapping everything and starting over from the ground up, changing genres, over and over again. And it's reflected in how these three games are paced. They can't decide what they want to be and don't care to end their stories in a meaningful way, or even build particularly meaningful narratives anymore. You can almost see nomura's whims shifting as you play them, "I want this kind of game", "now I want this system", "now I want this game instead". And it leads to these bloated, expanded, boring, dissapointing games about exclusively asking exciting questions and then getting acidicly angry when you dare ask for an answer. First, Square at this point saw the need to stretch Nomura as thin as they could to have his name in all places they could have it (if you want an example, the first credited name on XV you'll see is his, although he didn't have any connection to the game at that point), and although they wanted this game to exist, they still made him work in more than 10 different titles before the game even got re-branded to XV.
One of the comments that Eyepatch wolf makes reference to (which was really out of context and badly interpreted, where he says the designer said the team was unorganized, while he was actually saying that since he never worked in games before, he felt that way about it cause his only experiences were with animation/anime teams) actually shines a lot of light on the production, Roberto Ferrari said that "the game would get re written over and over again in a couple of months", and that in most part is due to Nomura needing to work on something else, coming back with new ideas and start all anew. Interestingly enough, Ferrari actually always compliments Nomura and the VsXIII team, even deciding to follow him to any project he'd call him, as he said himself.
Now, I could go on about FFXV, about how many times Tabata tried to save face lying about something, just to someone else later find out on the demos (and even on the games files) evidence he was just lying to not say he changed things to fit his own vision, but that's not necessary right now, Versus XIII was a mess, nothing really sets in stone the fact that it was going to be a better written game... but at least from trailers and the first two demos (that were closer to the final state the original team left the game on), we can say gameplay was way better, go figure.
Now, once again, about Remake, his name, just as always, is plastered by Square on it, to the point were Nomura told people (basically laughing at this fact that's, honestly, fucked) that he learned that he would be the game's director, while watching the teaser (the one that everyone saw on E3) with everyone else on square, learning with everyone in the company that also had nothing to do with the game at that point.
And then again, because he was being stretched thin by square, he barely even was a director on Remake, being mostly a supervisor giving some ideas, then again, the comment about him being the one pushing the game to be closer to the original. Still, he said he did things, but tbh, I don't remember a single interview where he claimed anything outside of the battle system and how the game ended.
As a matter of fact, we don't even know how much input he gave to Rebirth, but judging from the fact that Square had to announce that he wasn't going to direct it as a co-director "like on Remake", I'd say, he probably didn't do much, and probably because he is tired of being labeled by things he didn't do, he even said in an interview that most of the "Nomura-isms" (in general to all games he worked on) are not his actual doings. I know he drew some stuff from promotional materials, then again, could be remnants of thing he already did before that Square's only now showing to the public.
Now, I'm not a Nomura fan, I like one character he wrote for (Original VII Aerith), don't care much about the two he made for FFVI (They're not bad, just don't care about them), and I hate most of his more recent artworks and designs, looking forward to people like Lisa Fujise and Gen Kobayashi to take his place drawing artworks (since they draw in his style better than he does). But throughout the year, I've seen his name being dragged down the mud by things he never did, things that actually make me pissed off since I'm a creative like him. I do shit on him, but for the things he actually did and that I actually consumed.
If you want to blame Nomura for something, do it fairly, although, then you'll have to make fun of the KH portable games, since those are the only games he actually wrote for and directed at the same time (not that I would, since, again, everything about this world was mostly set in stone by Nojima on KH 1 and 2, but these games are the only ones he got to do without any interference from Square or Disney).

Different does not automatically make something good. Different does not automatically make something bad.
The only thing different automatically makes something is different. Different will always be divisive.
The internet blowing up about Zack’s change in Voice Actor has made me think of Justin Cook’s Yusuke. Justin Cook’s rendition of Yuske Urameshi is different than Nozomu Sasaki’s, and I love him for it. Cook-ske is my favorite Yusuke, the character it makes is this distinct hard-boy but also soft-boy that is really hard on the outside but trying to fingers out the inside because of the light swears, sarcastic quips, basic slang, and how the emotional lines can somehow convey that this is a kid who has no idea what he's doing with whatever emotion is at hand. I love this character because of what Cook brings to it creates a character that I love. Sasaki’s Yusuke still reflects this character too, but differently. It hits different. So much that I find it hard to watch the sub - not because it’s bad or I don’t like it, but when I do I’m missing Cook-ske.
If we didn’t have “different” I wouldn’t have Justin Cook’s Yusuke.
Take that logic and throw it out the window because now we get to the Poltergeist Report movie dub. Something I was so excited to find out existed because it meant more adventures with the cast I loved. Then finding out Dub Yusuke was different was low stakes-horrifying and I dropped the movie. Because it was different and I wanted, hoped and prayed Funi would license a redub. Different was the last thing I wanted, and now I couldn’t have more adventures with Cook-ske.
FF7:R is different. FF7:R it was destined to be divisive from the moment it was conceived.

imma be honest, whenever i see Nomura tied to a game i'm excited for, i get a certain pang of dread. the man is like a 12 year old on a sugar rush going "That sounds cool do that" over and over again, dragging projects out that should have taken 3 - 4 years of dev time into needing 10 years of it and just to get an unfocused mess

People continually sideline the fact that what we're dealing with here are business decisions.
S-E was in a very bad state financially a decade ago, and since then it's been extremely hard-nosed on commercial decisions. When you bear that in mind, the simultaneously ludicrous levels of fanservice and the requirement that people should acquaint themselves with the entire compilation before they can work out just what the hell is going on here, they both make perfect sense. So there is no storytelling rationale whatsover to having Zack in it (and they likely won't even attempt to explain it in future) it's a business decision: get people buying the compilation and stuff like the CC "remaster".
They clearly padded like crazy and set the first part exclusively in Midgar because they were expecting this to be a cash cow they could milk for another decade. Thankfully the sales of the first part have absolutely not justified that and we heard recently that they were considering wrapping everything up in just another single part until they settled on a trilogy. Again, business decisions.
Anyone who actually enjoys this project best hope the next part sells respectably, because if not, the last part will be the biggest phone-in in video game history.
And as far as business decisions go, I think they made an enormous commercial error of judgement in allowing Nomura to actively go out of his way to antagonise the OG playerbase so much, but all the Sephiroth round every corner crap, Zack being gratuitously thrown in, all that stuff, I think that was always going to crop up. Because there is no artistic intent there, the intention is commercial.
The remake is what happens when accountants and investors combine with complacent developers who have been around for thirty years and have started believing their own hype.

      @minecraftgravityguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Nah there was a lot of artistic intent, you just don’t care about it and want to bash the game for being different from what you wanted. You wanted a visual remake that made everything into a playstation exclusive while retaining exactly everything about the original, and being a single game. But you didn’t get that, so here we are. Nomura isn’t the author of FF7 nor it’s Remake, he was simply the game director, but the blindly hating anything he does is easier to cope with than the idea that you can’t get the “remaster/remake” you wanted and instead got something new and unique on it’s own. Any game is a business decision and if you knew anything about the industry you would know that, every single one of ypur favorite games didn’t start out of artistic passion only, they were business projects to develop products. But you can’t accept the changes that the creators and producers of the original want to make to their own work in their reimagining of it, so you call it greedy nomura/SE just cares about money and wants to milk FF7, instead of actually thinking what you liked and didn’t like in the Remake, actual criticisms that could help make better games or stories in the future, or simply tried to move on. This is why so many in the SE fanbase are seen as childish, because of this childish obsession with their childhood experiences, from FF to Kindgom Hearts and so on.

@@minecraftgravityguy You literally know nothing about me, so I'm intrigued by your belief in your total awareness of what I personally wanted from the experience of a specific video game.
The rest is hundreds of words which could have just been condensed into "lol cope". And by that token I don't need to take any lessons in childishness from remake fans, whose only response to criticsm of the remake is name-calling and petulant outbursts. Me and multiple people, including the content creator here have outlined very cogent criticisms of the writing in the remake and all we've ever got in response is precisely that.
