- I've always thought the Guns N' Roses "Use Your Illusion" albums were a big, bloated mess. Too much of this, too much of that, and too many songs. So, the natural fix, take two bloated messes and create ONE AMAZING ALBUM. Check it out!

This is always a fun exercise. Double LPs such as Use Your Illusion, Exile, The White Album, Physical Grafitti, all would be amazing as a single disc. But my feeling now is there would be that much less music to enjoy from these bands. Especially in the case of G&R where there were so few albums in the catalog before Chinese.
I think those extra songs would've been great as B-sides, maybe extra songs on a greatest hits or live album, because, agreed, you want more music, not less. Thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
Fixed or ruined? Man I had to stop you at around 2:50 in because you're wrong. I liked appetite but for me it's more like appetizer because I didn't really fall in love with gnr until the illusion albums. I feel like while appetite is great if they had just kept doing that then they world have just became another generic 80s rock band that fell into obscurity like a lot of other bands from that era. I really like what the piano and other instruments bring to the table. And while Welcome to the Jungle and Its so easy rock they're about as deep as a mud puddle compared to Estranged, Coma, Breakdown ect. And You could be mine is one of my favorite hard rock songs ever. I like most all of these albums but maybe some of you don't. Can't you just listen to the ones you do like or do the ones you don't need to just not exist? I like a broader spectrum of music so I'm really glad your career as their producer didn't take off. Lol.
i agree with most of what you said. i personally skip welcome to the jungle every single time (once i re-upped to the cd version from cassette) i listen to appetite. it's okay, but it's my least favorite song on the album. breakdown is my favorite gnr song.
Of course I can just listen to what I want to listen to, and avoid what I don't want to listen to. It's just a video for fun, don't take it more seriously than it needs to be taken.
When you first brought up this point awhile back I thought you were off base but when you actually sit down and go through it song by song… I you have a really good point. If these were all on one album, it would have been like a hysteria, thriller, back in black and appetite styled album where almost every damn song was a chart topping single. I’m going to give these a relisten in the order you put them in and see what I think. Either way, It’s a fitting end to the hair metal era, warts and all.

I definitely agree that cutting certain songs was tough. Also, I gave myself an extra challenge by making sure my "album" was under 80 minutes.

I was waiting for this... My thoughts. 1.) Dust N Bones is mandatory on this album. I get you don't care for the blues stuff, but that song is so dark and Izzy's voice works so well for it. 2.) Get In The Ring wasn't good in 1991 and is dated now. I want to hear a kick ass rock song, not Axl bitch about people. 3.) I get the "no covers" angle, and I hate Live and Let Die, but Knockin is such a great song. Has to be on the album. 4.) Yesterdays always sounded "lazy" to me. I wrote that same song around a campfire once. Not a bad song, but cliche and disposable. 5.) Double Talkin Jive is a kick ass tune. I would have found a spot for it... or just extend the album to 15 tracks. lol... Great vid Guru.
Totally agree on Get in the Ring. Then and now, hokey throw away song that I couldn't be bothered to listen to again. Both the covers were great but, they're so overplayed! No room for either of them on my album ;^)

This was a lot of fun, especially cause after previous videos, I've been curious to see which songs you would pick for a single disc Use Your Illusion. I admittedly mostly listen to Appetite when I'm in the GNR mood, but this got me to listen to both Illusion albums again. I have to say, after relistening, I like these albums more than I thought, and I have a lot of nostalgia for both. It reminded me why Pretty Tied Up and Estranged are two of my favorite GNR songs
Oh, I absolutely still go back to Appetite. There's definitely great stuff on the Illusions, but with so much filler, I always think of them as a disappointment. This playlist-in my opinion--makes it a dramatically better single album than what we got.
In my opinion your list is perfect like the exact songs I would’ve picked and kept the only song I would’ve kept is perfect crime. I love your channel and keep on rocking.

I agree completely with UYI being a single pretty decent 10 to 14 song release. All the other songs that don’t make the cut? Bonus tracks on other releases. After buying these two CDs on a budget without a lot of extra money and then listening to them a good deal, well, this was pretty much the end of me caring about new G ‘n R or buying their stuff at full price. Another great video, keep it up! I’d say give the bluesy stuff more of a chance: Great White, Cinderella, Radioactive Cats come to mind, did it right. Last thing: not a big fan of synth keys but bands that can use the piano correctly are amazing IMHO. I listen to Savatage’s Streets all the time, the piano with Jon Oliva is amazing.
I'm right with you--the extra tracks would have been great for an EP or additional songs on a best of. I'm not against keyboards, but when you fall in love with the band during Appetite, and then get a dramatic change... it can be a bit much. Anyway, I love some of the keyboard songs--I think Estranged is amazing. Appreciate you watching and supporting what I do, man, seriously.

My list is VERY close to yours… I agree with dropping the covers (especially since knocking on heaven’s door was already released on the Days of Thunder Soundtrack). Live & Let Die should have been a B side or given to a James Bond soundtrack. I’d drop Civil War & You Could Be Mine since they were originally released earlier & save them for a Greatest Hits album… I’d also drop Pretty Tied Up (my toughest cut) and I’d keep 14 Years, The Garden and Coma instead (I love the Don’t Cry, November Rain, Estranged Trilogy and Coma feels like the 4th part to that).

'Fixing' the Illusion albums has been one of my hobbies for the last couple of years.
But, I would have 20 songs.
12 normal length tracks on disc 1
8 mostly long tracks on disc 2
I hear you here, man. That's a good idea as well.
Appetite was a one in a millon album, we'll never see the likes of it again. And it remains to this day my favorite album all time. And honestly, we were lucky to get that much from this group of 5 distinct persons. It was never meant to last, and couldn't possibly hold together. However Illusions is what separated Guns from almost everyone else, certainly the " hair metal " bands. The musicianship, the lyrics, the arrangements, the vocal stylings are really, really, untouchable. And some the songs on Illusions are just......impossible to describe. Estranged, Locomotive, Coma, Breakdown, are better songs in everyway than anything in Appetite. Although November Rain is beloved, I never really dug it. I wish they kept the old demo style of Don't Cry ( which is the greatest demo song ever). 14 yrs?....my God better than anything the Stones never wrote. There were some clunkers, nevermind My World. And certainly some songs better left on a album of B sides. Knockin would of been better on a covers album, along with Live and Let Die, KOHD is just too played out and nothing beats their version from 88 to 90. And balls out rockers like Don't Damn Me, and Perfect crime are serverly underrated. Damn I wish these guys could have conquered their demons and stayed together longer. Its nice to see them all happy and getting along well together now. They finally look happy. But they are a shell of what they were . Fortus is the only real one out of the other members worth anything. And Dizzy Reed owes the devil his soul when he dies. I hope one day those 5 can just play one show together. Just the classic 5.

Being in 8th grade at the time, it was such an interesting time for music. When “Use Your Illusions” came out, I only hate enough money to buy 1 album. I picked “Use Your Illusions 2” because of Terminator 2
I saw GnR and Metallica together at the Rose Bowl in 1992. I remember GnR having 10 people on stage. Hello from a fellow NoDak. 👍🏻

@@leemires5315 i cut singles yesterday, estranged, and aint it fun. Coma and pretty tied up weren’t singles and I only rate You Could be mine ahead of them. But hey I like meat and potatoes rock. All the fluff and artsyness is just not my thing and it’s one thing to “grow” into this over time as a band but they just started and as it turned out just stopped too as they flamed out ridiculously fast

Nice exercise. I also think this album could have been stronger with tighter pacing. There are b-sides that don't need to be there. Plus, it would have been nice if they did like Appetite and Lies, like Use 1 with the rock songs, Use 2 with the slows and more relaxed songs.

I remember when UYI 1&2 came out. I was in college. Pretty cool time for music. There are probably 3 or 4 songs on each album that I skip when I occasionally go back and listen to them. I have to admit that both albums have somewhat grown on me over the years and I tend to prefer some of the deeper cuts now.
Garden of Eden stays, get rid of the other uptempo one from earlier of UYI 1.

we clearly don't like guns n roses for the same reasons. haha. and that's cool. i have done this exercise a few times, so i don't remember the order i had the songs in, but i know civil war was first and coma was last. i agree, no covers. i also made sure to keep it under 80 minutes. my process was to list all the songs that could potentially make it, and then star the ones i couldn't live without. luckily that put me at, i believe, 78:43.

The garden is one of the best songs on that album... By far... Just saying😊. In the 90s they did out the best songs on one album. I had it on cassette .

I certainly disagree, Use Your Illusions has mostly great songs with very little filler.
Blues is a part of Rock, you can't have rock without Blues. Rock is Jazz & R&B combined.
Guns n Roses has 4 distinct eras, with the first being;
1) Roots/Hair Metal- From the real early days with Traci Guns all the way through Appetite for Destruction & Lies.
2) Hard Rock/Early Grunge- From Use Your Illusions to Interview with the Vampire Soundtrack single.
3) Grunge Rock/Industrial Sound-This was through the various changes in personell ultimately resulting in Starting with End of Days soundtrack to Chinese Democracy.
4) Mix of the first two eras, they've released a few good singles but age has caught up with Axels ability to sing like he used to so what we get is a mixture of different eras. The newer tracks do try to have that Hard Rock sound though.
As for your list, it's not a bad list but I found both albums with mostly great music and I love it when bands are confident enough to try new sounds or improve their sound.
The Greatest Hits album was a pretty good release too with many from these two albums.

This was a fun watch. I happen to only dislike: my world and get in the ring. I enjoy the UYI albums as a whole.
I’ve seen various videos and have had conversations with friends putting their favs into a single album. I’ve never heard many people have the same single album.
I think UYI is a celebration of all the elements that made up what GNR was about.
Hope you don’t mind, I decided to play along. I don’t have 14 songs. I have 15. I used the logic of, “can these songs fit on an 80 minute burnable CD” and I got these 15 songs.
The order of tracks would be:
1. Yesterdays (IMHO a killer opening track. Especially following the beast that Appetite was. Lyrically, I think this song sets the tone with how bad Axl wanted to destroy Appetite)
2. Bad Obsession (I’m a guitar player and I’m a sucker for Honky Tonk Blues influenced rock)
3. You could be mine
4. Don’t Cry (Original)
5. Live And Let Die (It’s a cover but for me, this cover outshines many GNR originals)
6. Perfect Crime
7. Double Talkin Jive
8. Back Off Bitch
9. Dust N Bones
10. You Ain’t The First
11. So Fine (Love this track and its quirkiness)
12. The Garden
13. Estranged
14. November Rain
15. Coma
The only 2 songs that are super hard for me to cut out are: 14 years and Pretty tied up. However, with the exception of 2 songs, I love the whole experience.
I’m a random viewer with an opinion and it’s all about enjoying the music we love. The discussion of UYI as 1 album always brings me to the same answer…GNR were rad, music means alot to us fans, and UYL showed us how a band we love won’t always make a record that will speak to every single fan the same. That’s powerful. And it’s incredibly cool.
I like Steven and Matt. I think Matt’s style fit the production of this album and tour. Would it sound better with Steven? Who knows? I like both drummers so I don’t have an opinion either way. I see both sides.
I’m also an odd ball because I either love really short albums/EPs or a long record that takes us on a journey. I feel UYI does that.

The second half of 91 was just a series of let downs. I saved up all my money for UYI and was a massively disappointed 16 yr old. They started wearing shit clothes, got a new drummer with terrible hair and a crap drum sound. They let people like Dizzy join and Izzy go. Cheesey back up singers and a stupid horn section in pinstripe suits. The biggest disappointment though was November Rain. I had a taped bootleg of the 86 demo for years (which is amazing) and couldn’t wait for the studio version, which was horrible. That said there were lots of good songs on there and I agree with nearly all of yr keepers, but Double Talkin Jive was a standout banger for me my and my pals. Surprised you didn’t like it. Back off bitch and you could be mine were originally intended for Appetite. Keep up the good work my dude!

Totally Agree with you , bloated and also Slash playing atm breaks my heart , Slash playing it’s totally the opposite what Slash was about , he was soulfully with great tone and amazing understanding of how much to play, nowadays Slash is like a Locomotive driver that is rushing to drive to next station to finish and go on his lunch break , he’s playing is really amazing technically wise and KILLA speeding solos with unmistakable perfection but that’s not what Slash was about back in the 80’s & 90’s and Slash’s playing Nowadays doesn’t excite me anymore , it feels to me Slash lost his soul and he’s out there to prove he’s a KILLA guitarist what he is undoubtedly, but he’s going in the wrong direction no soul just lots of speeding solos

I have a GNR illusion playlist that combines both albums and cuts out the bloat. There are great songs on those records but it’s bloated with shite!
I think a lot of people made their own playlist. I know I did back in the day as well.
I did play a game with a couple of mates a while back where I suggested they were the producer of AFD at the time and the album was going to be 16 tracks. Reason being that You could be mine, perfect crime, back off bitch and don’t cry we’re all written around the same time as the appetite stuff . Anyway I told them they had to be included in the track listing but was curious about the running order. What was interesting was that we all had different ideas but I think we all still opened with jungle and ended with rocket queen 🤷♂️
I was so disappointed when I heard those albums. Doing a double album for your second major release is a huge risk that few bands can pull off. I’m all for bands evolving and experimenting, but it seems like they were trying to write beyond their abilities… or more accurately, Axels ability.

It would be nice to hear demos of Early '' you could be mine'' without the very long drum intro(, I like the main part of the song but never thought the lyrics made sense) and '' why do you look at me when you hate me? '' with duff only singing.

The band heard the finished Illusions mix and Slash In his autobiography described it sounded awesome pure raw rock. BTW he’s a blues influenced guitarist. Anyway He and the other guys played the album when it was released and Axl had added strings and synths and even the track My World - without telling them. This was the beginning of the end.
The current big bloated show? Axl.
I saw slash a few months the ago with his solo band. Newcastle City Hall. 2000 max capacity. 4 guys onstage. A wall of Marshall’s. He played Don’t Damn Me. Ticket cost £100. I stood right at the front in front of him. Rocking out. Waited after the show and met him by his tour bus along with the rest of the band. He’s still keeping it real.
I would trim it down to 23-24 songs. Put 11-12 songs on each album. Then release them 1 year apart.

I've had an Illusions playlist with 13 songs for a long time. I had a few different than yours but, you weren't too far off. I even added one extra track to get to 14 and bumped two of my picks to add Breakdown and Pretty Tied Up as a compromise. (The covers are good but, I agree that they shouldn't take up space on this album. Besides, they're so overplayed at this point I don't need to hear them again as long as I live.) ... but I think "You Could Be Mine" probably should be kept off the hypothetical merged album, and used to drive sales of the T2 soundtrack. I bought Coneheads, I surely would've bought this.

This should be fascinating, although one never listened to the albums as a whole - Appetite too even. Which still makes me wonder how George Martin apparently intended for The White Album to be a singular record over the 4LP product.
1990 to 3...Guns n Roses,Nirvana,Metallica,Red Hot Chilli Peppers..bands that were massive at the time Alice in Chains,NIN,Pearl Jam ,even Henrys Rollins Band that got huge briefly with Liar and Disconnect and the End of Silence album before..completly changed the music landscape and converted me from Hip Hop and Funk to being an absolute Metalhead /"Alternative" metal freak.❤ It was sad how quickly G n R and Nirvana peaked and fell (for obvious reasons) ya just always felt if theyd had their shit together for 2 or 3 more good years thered be at least 3 or 4 more all time great albums wed be raving about now
There's something called Use Your Illusion Compilation "released" in 1998, I cant tell if thats real or not. It has half of the two album covers split in half.

They released a remastered Super Deluxe version of the two albums packaged together as one set in 2022.
i think the '98 single album only has songs they made videos for, but i do know that garden of eden has a video, but is not on the album. both versions of don't cry are on it too.

Dude, thanks so much for this! In a way, I've kinda thought about doing the same thing, but you absolutely blew it out of the water. I don't have any changes at all to what you just presented. For me, Civil War is the ultimate track. Pretty tied up is right there, as well as Estranged. As a sidenote, I stood in line at midnight in State College, Pennsylvania for that goddamn horrible Pearl Jam album. My buddy and I took it back to our dorm room and listened to it, and we were beyond disappointed by that shocking piece of shit. It goes to show, putting on a black T-shirt and a flannel in 1991 could get you chics, but it didn't guarantee anything about the quality of the music.

I don't mind your list. I agree that there was too much filler. I also believe there was too much keyboard going on. The only thing I would say is that the 14 songs may fit on an album but if you check the run time, I don't think they would all fit. You have four songs that are long as Appetite had two.

Would have made a great single album, it was a big mis step doing a double album that early into their career. It was one of the many nails in the coffin that derailed them to soon.
One of the great debates . We hard core Guns fans seemingly will wait forever for that grit and snarl of Its So Easy or Rocket Queen . Looking back , Illusions was the sound of a band imploding . Axl going one way , Slash and Duff going another , Izzy gone (Love JuJu Hounds ) . With my single shot CD player , I wore these records out in Jr High . Dead Horse , Pretty Tied Up , Yesterday was short and kinda Southern Rock , Breakdown is cool . But very little of that grit and venom from AOD . On Spaghetti, the Human Beings and Hair of The Dog covers had that bite . But I feel AOD was a moment in time , and is gone forever . That General thing I heard , terrible like new Motley terrible .

I only think '' don't damn me' ' could fit on appetite. axl's voice isn't the same and he screams over slash' s solos, not the same groove on these songs- axl's songs are simple beginner chords. I think izzy's songs would have been good on his own record sung alone. I saw a gngr tribute recently and it put into perspective the difference between the riffs of early gnr and the plodding chords progressions of illusion.
